Ep 174I'm Writing a Book

I have some big news! After 15 years of teaching SLPs and OTs how to start and scale successful private practices, I’m writing a book.In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I’m sharing a behind-the-scenes look at what went into my decision to write a book, who it’s for, and how to get your hands on a copy when it’s released. This is something that has been on my radar for a long time and it is finally happening. I have been helping people start their private practices since 2008, and I have a lot of levels of people that I serve—everyone from people who are just thinking about getting started or who are considering whether a private practice is for them all the way to people in their “scale” phase. These are clinicians who are looking to grow their income with a multidisciplinary, multi-location private practice. This means I have audiences with different folks who need to hear different messages. One of the largest groups though is the group of people who are still in the schools or hospitals thinking of starting their private practice. These are the people dealing with high productivity requirements, endless paperwork, unnecessary meetings, and low pay. These people are often scared and have a lot of questions about whether they should start a private practice. So, this first book is for those that are on the path to private practice but haven’t started yet. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:The types of people I serveWhat this book is and what it isn’tWhat’s included in this bookThe tentative release timeframe for my bookHow to get the book when it’s releasedBonuses that will be included with the bookI am having an absolute blast writing this book for you, and I hope that you’re looking forward to reading it. If you are in my SLP & OT Private Practice Beginners Facebook group, you’ll notice that I am starting to post things about the book! Ep 162Growing Her Practice and then Becoming a Time Management Coach with Theresa Harp

Starting a private practice is such an amazing way to branch out and do your own thing. It enables you to work with your dream clients on your own terms. One of my favorite things about private practices though is how it can open so many doors to you that you didn’t even dream were possible. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Theresa Harp to talk about how she went from running her own private practice to starting a second successful business in a totally different niche. Theresa Harp is a mother of four and a New Jersey native. These interests led to the creation of an entirely new business called The Time Tamers, which provides time management consulting and coaching services to busy women.Theresa partners with her clients to create customized plans so that women can accomplish their goals and spend their time doing exactly what they love. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How Theresa started her private practiceThe importance of setting boundaries in your professional lifeWhy Theresa kept her private practice smallHow and why she shifted to coachingHow Theresa connected speech pathology with her coaching businessWhy your mindset is the most important part of making a changeWhy progress is more important than perfectionThe flexibility you get when starting your own private practiceI love to think of starting a private practice as a “choose your own adventure” experience. Ep 157Why Part-Time Private Practice is the Perfect Way to Get Started

Having a part-time private practice is the safest and smartest way to get started. I actually don’t recommend that SLPs or OTs jump full-time into running their own private practice to start. People are so surprised to hear me say that but the truth is, when just starting out, I recommend that you start part-time on the side of your regular job for a few different reasons. The first is that it decreases your financial risk when you leave your job and allows you to have those benefits while growing your business. This works wonders for calming those nerves about embarking on your private practice journey. The second is that it helps you test the waters and make sure that going all-in on private practice is right for you. The last thing you want or need is to dive into being a private practice owner only to find it’s not right for you. The third reason is that you can start generating income on the side that you can use to pay off debt, build up your savings, reinvest in your business, or use on fun things before it becomes your sole income. Your private practice starts with one client. This time is perfect for getting all of your ducks in a row so that when you go full-time with your business, you are fully prepared for the work that comes with it. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Why SLPs and OTs are starting their private practices on the side now more than everThe benefits of starting parent coachingWhy now is the perfect time to startThe things people think you need to get started and why you don’t actually need themWhy it doesn’t cost as much to start as you thinkThe things you do need to get started with your private practiceStarting your private practice is simpler than you think. You don’t need to go all out right from the start. Babysteps are the way to go. Starting as a side hustle will help you create the business of your dreams in the easiest way possible. Ep 156Opening a Specialty Practice + Multiple Streams of Income with Sydney Bassard

Many new SLPs hold back from starting their own private practice because they don’t believe they have enough experience to venture off on their own, but that isn’t true! You can start your private practice as soon as you have something to bring to the table. Specializing is a great way to increase your referrals and find success sooner, even if you are a new SLP. In this episode, I sat down with Sydney Bassard to talk about how she started her own private practice that focuses on deaf and hard-of-hearing children and literacy early on in her career and how she created multiple streams of income to increase her success. Sydney knows that she can run her private practice in whatever way works for her. She is a multi-passionate person and is using her private practice as a way to focus on more than just one of them. Sydney Bassard is a private practice SLP in Charlotte, NC. She graduated with her B.S. in Public Health in 2017 and her MSP in Speech Pathology in 2019. Sydney received both her degrees from The University of South Carolina. Prior to opening her own private practice, Sydney worked in outpatient pediatrics as a member of the cochlear implant team. Her private practice, The Listening SLP, LLC, is founded on the principles to "Listen.Learn.Advocate" with the clients and families she serves. Ep 151Starting a Private Practice to Serve Underserved Populations with Alex Wynter

What is your favorite population to work with as an SLP? Who are the clients that light you up? If you have a dream population that you want to serve, go out and serve them! This is one of the main reasons you should start your own private practice. If you are passionate about a certain population, diagnosis, or disorder, you can make them your priority by starting your own practice and getting them the help they so desperately need. This was the case for my Start Your Private Practice student Alex Wynters. She knew that she wanted to work with adults with Parkinson’s, dementia, MS, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and so much more. She took her passion for this population and made her own business out of it and now she is making a difference in the lives of those she works with.In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, you’ll get to hear how she did it and the tips she recommends to anyone ready to do the same. Alexandria has been treating the adult and senior population for 10 years, working for some of the top healthcare systems in Philadelphia including Penn Medicine at Home & Hospice Services with the Penn Medicine hospital network and Mercy Home Health with Nazareth Hospital. After her beginnings in-home health 6 years ago, she realized the unique challenges and services needed by those living with chronic conditions. Often seen as "frequent flyers" by their healthcare team, with their concerns frequently swept under the rug as being "the usual complaints" she continued to see this population underserved. It's the exact reason she decided to work with adults & seniors with chronic conditions. Due to her special abilities to build authentic relationships with her patients and communicate to their healthcare team (including physicians, specialists, and other therapists), she has been able to help her patients see significant gains, not only with their speech therapy goals but their overall health. She believes that your progress in speech therapy takes a second seat to your mental health, advocacy abilities, health literacy, and food access which is why she focuses on a whole-body approach to therapy. As a healthcare advocate and caregiver for her own father living with Parkinson's and dementia, she promises to treat you like you're part of the family.Alex is also the co-founder of SHE x SHINES, a platform for multi-passionate women. Her mission is to help career women with an entrepreneurial spirit, break traditions and redefine their work by leveraging their skills. She is a big believer in exploring the jobs & passions that make you happy....bonus if a glass of champagne is included. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Alex’s journey to starting her private practiceHow Alex chose what population she wanted to serveThe holistic approach Alex takes with her clients in her practiceThe steps Alex takes to grow her business and her plans for the futureTips for dealing with imposter syndromeWhy you can get started now instead of waiting until you’re olderSometimes you need to find something outside of the box to make you feel good about your job. If you can’t find the type of job you want, you can create it! I hope you loved this episode. Alex’s passion for her clients is truly so inspiring. It is possible to work together with these other clinics and practices to serve the clients in your area and position yourself in a way that will bring you success no matter the size of your city. If you’re thinking of starting your private practice in a big city, you’ll love this episode of Private Practice Success Stories. Dani and I are discussing this and more specifically, how and why she works in both the school setting and private practice.Dani Newcombe is a school and private practice SLP in Indiana. Ep 144Starting a Telepractice-Based Private Practice

Only a handful of speech-language pathologists were offering telepractice before the pandemic, but our entire profession switched to telepractice overnight once it started! Some speech-language pathologists absolutely love it and some prefer in-person. Those who love telepractice are trying to find ways to continue to do it because they love the flexibility it offers. I always tell those clinicians to start their own private practice and offer teletherapy!Starting a private practice that offers teletherapy is a lot easier and cheaper than you’d think, so in this episode, I am breaking down how you could do it and telling you about some clinicians that have implemented teletherapy into their private practices! In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Why you should consider cutting out the middlemanHow business licensing differs for telepracticeWhether or not you should take insuranceExamples of how clinicians offer private practice differentlyThe benefit of convenience to both clinicians and clientsIf you are ready to use your clinical skills to earn what you're worth and have the flexibility that you crave, private practice is the number one way to accomplish this. It's completely up to you as the business owner to decide if you want to offer telepractice, in-person services, or a mix of both. Ep 143Is Private Practice Better for Type A or Type B SLPs?

Are you a Type A or Type B SLP?There is a belief that speech-language pathologists who identify as Type A SLPs are more suited for private practice, and before I started my Private Practice, I thought the same thing! As a Type B SLP myself, the thought of this made me very nervous because I was worried that I wouldn’t be successful. In this episode, I am sharing my thoughts and feelings on this idea now as well as some data that I think you will find very interesting! In Today's Episode, We Discuss:What I feared before I started my private practiceThe things I did to stay organized and on top of deadlinesWhy I started my education companyHow to leverage your unique strengthsThe strengths of Type A SLPs versus Type B SLPsI was shocked in the best way when I realized that a lot of SLPs are Type B! I love it when false beliefs, assumptions, and stereotypes are challenged, including my own. Private practice isn't for any one type of person. It's for anyone who has the drive and the inclination to help people!Instead of trying to be someone else or wishing you were more Type A or Type B, why don't you let all of that go and lean into your strengths? Ep 141Dawn Moore's Private Practice Success Story

Everything is figureoutable. Do you believe that? I do!My guest, Dr. Dawn Moore, does too, so she is joining me to share her private practice success story. We talk about how she got started, how she grew, and the challenges that she has faced along the way.Dr. Dawn Moore ClinScD., CCC-SLP, COM® is the founder of Expressions Speech, Language, & Myofunctional Center in Burlington, North Carolina. She is a certified and licensed Speech-Language Pathologist holding the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).Additionally, she is a Certified Orofacial Myologist® through the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM). Dr. Moore has over 23 years of experience in Speech-Language Pathology, earning her clinical doctorate in 2018. For 15 years, she practiced in the schools of North Carolina as both a clinician and Lead SLP with recognition as a Teacher of Excellence and expanded into pediatric private practice in 2010, serving children of all ages. Her main interests include orofacial myology and speech sound disorders (articulation, phonological delay, and apraxia). She uses her own program, Let’s Hear It For /R/! which was the subject of her doctoral capstone, to correct the difficult /r/ sound. For phonology, she uses and teaches others how to use Barbara Hodson’s Cycles for Phonology due to the success she continues to have with the program. Dr. Moore became a Certified Orofacial Myologist (COM®) after struggling to find help for her own daughter with a severe tongue thrust. Through this training and practice, she is presenting across the country educating SLPs, orthodontists, ENTs, and dentists about the impact myofunctional disorders have on speech, feeding, chewing, breathing, and dentition. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Transitioning from the schools into private practiceThe learning curve that comes with billingFinding the right people and the right clients for your private practiceHow to get your name out there and get referralsMaking your private practice work with the help of SLPAsLearning from others and applying those lessons to your own practiceThere are times when Dawn mentions challenges associated with private practice throughout this episode, but keep in mind that everything is figureoutable. When you hit a roadblock (which you will) it's worth trying to figure out a way around it.If it was easy all the time, everyone would do it! What separates those who are successful from those who are not is persisting versus giving up when things get difficult. One of the best ways to be successful in private practice is to make sure that you have a network of people who can support you. Do you ever feel like you aren’t being challenged enough or you are ready for a change? It's an interesting feeling when you start to feel restless as an SLP. It’s like you're going through the motions and you know what to do, but you're no longer challenged or excited by it. Jamie West Florida is joining me in this episode because she felt that exact same way before she started her own private practice with the help of the Start Your Private Practice Program. Upon graduating, she has worked in different settings, including schools, home health, an ABA clinic, and a private clinic. After some pep talks from her peloton and the support of her family, she decided to just go for it! Slowly, over the last 3 years, she went from one private client on the side up to a home-visit-based caseload and recently, into a brick-and-mortar where she sees children for speech-language therapy, dyslexia intervention, and runs various camps! In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Gaining confidence one client at a timeBuilding the type of private practice that you wantSpecializing in dyslexia as an SLPCreating a business that can run without youPlanning for growth in your private practiceMaking decisions with you and your family in mindI love Jamie’s energy, drive, and commitment to working with a clinical population that she's interested in and inspired by.
