And specifically, I’m talking about how to thrive in a changing economic landscape.I’m going to make 3 BIG predictions that you’re going to want to know if you’re thinking about starting your private practice this year. I’ll give you a hint of one of them: The Importance of Diversification of Income. I tell my students in the Start and Grow Your Private Practice programs all the time about how business isn't something that you learn once. Just like you're a lifelong learner for clinical education, it's important to invest in being a lifelong learner for your business education. One of the reasons is that this landscape of practice changes every few years, and you need to be prepared and know how to navigate the ups and downs, the feast and famine cycles, and different positive and negative trends when it comes to things like finances, marketing, hiring, and more. So I know what I'm talking about. And no matter where you are in the private practice journey, I know that the information that I'm about to share can really help you.In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How we are planning to support even more students in our programs this yearThe shift toward lifestyle private practicesPositioning your private practice in a changing economyWhy diversification of income is crucialThose are my private practice predictions for 2024! I hope you're feeling as energized and excited about the future of private practice as I am. My word for 2024 is 'Evolve' – because it's all about evolving with the times, simplifying complexities, and thriving in our practices. Beginners, Private Practice Bootcamp starts on January 22nd! Ep 234Relieving Early Career Burnout with Private Practice Featuring SLP Book Club Hosts, Adrianne Frost and Laura Geissert

Suffering from early career burnout? This is something that many overworked SLPs are suffering from, and private practice may be the answer. In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, Laura and Adrianne share how they started their private practices after overcoming burnout. They both share where they get their referrals from, what types of clients they see, and whether they are generalists or specializing in certain populations. If you've been thinking about starting a private practice and want to see how other folks are doing it, this episode is for you! Laura and Adrianne are the hosts of The SLP Book Club podcast. Each month, they carefully select amazing books that speech therapists might not have the time to read and discuss them on their podcast chapter by chapter. They create and post free resources to accompany the books, allowing SLPs to immediately use the information they've learned with their caseloads.Laura began her career in public schools, working as a contracted employee in a very large school district for six years. Outrageously high caseload numbers and unrealistic expectations led to complete burnout in her fourth year. A switch to part-time proved to be more manageable, but she ultimately decided to open her private practice in 2021 after discovering the Start Your Private Practice course. Her private practice, Springboard Speech Therapy, provides support to preschoolers who stutter and their families in the Los Angeles area. In addition to seeing clients in their homes, Laura creates digital and printable materials for other speech therapists in her TPT store, Laura G SLP.Adrianne has spent much of her career working in public schools with grades K-12. She enjoys helping children as both an in-person therapist and a teletherapist. In 2021 she opened her private speech therapy practice, Say Hello Speech Therapy, in Orange County, California. She has a special interest in articulation/speech sound disorders and is extensively trained in UCLA's PEERS program for both teens and young adults. She is especially enthusiastic about empowering parents to be the best advocates and speech coaches possible for their children. Adrianne currently balances motherhood, working full-time as a teletherapist, hosting a podcast, and seeing private practice clients. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:How the Start program helped Adrianne and Laura start the private practices they dreamed ofHow specializing helps clients come to youThe job satisfaction private practice can bringHow empowering it can be to own your own private practiceThe power of parent coaching and home connection Running your private practice from home and setting your caseload sizesThe freedom you get as a private practice ownerThe truth about burnout among SLPsHow Laura and Adrianne are finding their clientsI hope you enjoyed this episode with Laura and Adrianne! Private practice is all about taking back that control. They didn't switch careers. They just switched to a new job setting- their own, where they are the boss. They set their schedules and their rates and decide which clients to see and how many to see. They literally set their own caseload caps and I'd love to see it!Make sure to check out their podcast, follow them on Instagram, and join their Facebook group! In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with Kelsey Brown, a Start and Grow Your Private Practice student, to talk about her journey as an SLP and why she decided to do things differently and start her own private practice. Kelsey shares how she started to lay the groundwork for leaving her job, exactly how she's making more money and working less, and how she's built stability into her income by filling a school contract and doing sessions while she builds her private pay caseload. Kelsey is a great example of a young and talented SLP who refused to get caught up in working in settings that didn't serve her or her clients and is instead creating her own systems and life through her private practice.Kelsey Brown (she/her) is a DC-based speech-language pathologist by day and children's book author ("Come On, Calm," 2019) by night, weekend, and summer. She has undergraduate degrees in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Theatre from The University of Georgia and a Master of Science in Communication Disorders from Emerson College. Kelsey’s love for speech therapy started when she was 14 years old and she’s been interested in working with individuals with complex communication needs since her first introduction to assistive technology her freshman year at UGA (she later completed a certificate program in Instructional Design and Technology). Kelsey’s experience includes working with and learning from the folks at St. Coletta of Greater Washington, Boston Children's Hospital, the Access Champions podcast, Imagination Stage, Soaring Starts Early Learning & Arts, and Camp Twin Lakes. Her theatre and teaching artist background help to inspire fun and motivating client-centered sessions in a naturalistic environment: your home or community space. While she was leading school-based teletherapy sessions during the first year of the pandemic, Kelsey enjoyed the close relationship she built with her students’ families. In both in-person and virtual speech, language, and literacy sessions, Kelsey builds caregiver coaching into every session. Kelsey Brown specializes in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), emergent literacy, early intervention, and gestalt language processing. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:Kelsey’s experience as a new SLPHow Kelsey found confidence in herself as a clinicianWhen she decided to go into private practiceHow Kelsey built up her private caseloadThe power of building relationships with other professionalsThe happiness Kelsey feels now that she is a private practitionerHow Kelsey structures her work day in her private practiceThe basics of what you need to start a private practiceThe book that Kelsey wrote and how she achieved itI hope you enjoyed this conversation with Kelsey! I love how committed she is to gaining knowledge and experience and then implementing it to change the lives of those around her while changing her own life. She may have started slowly, but laying that groundwork allowed her to quit her job when the time was right and she hasn't looked back. The private practice movement is gaining momentum and it's time for you to be a part of it. Ep 227Working Less, Making More, and Seeing Ideal Clients as a Young Private Practitioner with Luisa Rinaudo

Wondering if you are too early in your career to start a private practice? You aren’t! In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my students, Luisa Rinaudo, to talk about how she suffered from early career burnout and made the leap to private practice. Now Luisa is working less, making more, and seeing the clients she is truly passionate about on her own terms. Luisa Rinaudo is the owner of The Therapy Garden, LLC. Her passion for educating and instructing individuals, especially those in the neuro-divergent community has always been a driving force in her personal and professional life. She is the lucky older sister to two siblings, one of which was born with Down syndrome-a superpower as she likes to say! Her brother has given her countless opportunities to find her potential and when she was ready to decide on a career, this is where she landed. She pursued her Bachelor's degree in early elementary education and special education at Seton Hall University from 2015-2019. After completing her undergraduate studies, she went on to obtain her Master's degree in speech-language pathology from 2019-2021, also from Seton Hall University. Since then, she has been working as a speech-language pathologist in Monmouth County, NJ, serving both pediatric and the adult populations. She has always wanted to have her own practice and was one of those people who thought it should happen once she was more experienced in her field, but with some words of encouragement she told herself "What better time to do it than now?!"While she loves and continues to work with the pediatric population, she has seen the lack of programming out there for adults in this community and she wants to be a part of that change. She wants to give her brother and individuals of all abilities a place where they feel welcome, heard, and accepted. Right now, she has a very small office, but until she is able to provide a bigger space she hopes that she can be a person of comfort and connection with her clients. In Today's Episode, We Discuss:The clients that Luisa serves in her private practiceWhen Luisa decided to start her own private practiceThe risk of reaching career burnoutHow the Start program helped Luisa get goingHow to know when it’s time to go all in on your private practiceWhat a typical day in Luisa’s life as a private practice owner looks likeThe flexibility you can get as a private practice ownerHow Luisa was able to get a physical office spaceThe community-based services Luisa offersI hope you enjoyed this episode with Luisa! Ep 226Private Practice on the Homestead: Balancing Work and Family with Olivia Rae Jones

Thinking about how starting a private practice could give you more flexibility and time with your family? In this episode of Private Practice Success Stories, I sat down with one of my students, Olivia Rae Jones, to talk about how she started her private practice on her homestead so that she could have more work-life balance. She earned her Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology from Midwestern University - Downers Grove. Private practice was the dream from the very beginning. Olivia developed her experience in SNFs, acute care, adult and pediatric outpatient, inpatient rehab, and finally, schools before making the leap into her own practice just 6 years into her career.Olivia is focused on growing Marigold Speech Pathology Services to a full-time career with the support of her family on her multigenerational homestead.
