Pre-Loved Podcast Trailer
trailerPre-Loved Podcast Trailer Hey vintage lovers, I'm Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you'll want to go thrifting with! On this show, I interview guests from all across the secondhand space about their stories with thrift and vintage. The secondhand space is a big ole world, with just as many stories and angles as the firsthand fashion space. I created Pre-Loved Podcast because there's not another podcast like it to tell these stories -- stories of the best vintage finds, sustainability, mending and upcycling, the ins and outs of selling vintage, all that and more. And now there are over 100 episodes! New episodes come out every Monday! And to follow along with all things thrift, vintage, rad, retro, and sustainable, you can find me Emily Stochl, across the internet as @emilymstochl. And you'll find even more of this kind of content at my Patreon, Patreon.com/prelovedpod. Pre-Loved Podcast: Toni Branson of Style is Freedom Okay, let's talk about today's guest because this is a really unique story. Something very 2020 for sure. So today I'm speaking with Toni Branson. Toni is a streetwear fashion designer who is skilled with embroidery, and has been working in the fashion space at their brand Style is Freedom for about a decade. But in June 2020, Toni and her wife Alex Branson opened a thrift store in Brooklyn as a business pivot due to COVID. That's because Alex had just realized her dream of opening a musical education studio for babies and toddlers in Brooklyn, which is called Lavender Blues. Like, just realized this dream. They raised $10k for the down payment on the studio in January, and things started off great in February, but then as you know on March 13th, Alex and the rest of the world had to close up due to COVID. With fears of losing the studio she dreamed of and worked for, Alex and Toni pivoted to opening the thrift store. This is a really cool story of two entrepreneurs working in the second-hand space to make both their dreams happen. I think you're gonna love it. Thanks for listening, let's dive right in! Pre-Loved Podcast: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena Hey, vintage lovers, I'm Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you'll want to go thrifting with. Thanks for joining us! Last week, we heard from Liz Rickett, co-founder of the OR Foundation, and we had a conversation that I hope brought some nuance to your understanding of the global second-hand industry, including the industry in Accra, Ghana. Today we're joined by four Ghanians: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena. All have different stories to tell in the second-hand sphere. First up, you'll hear from David Adams. David's family has run a second-hand clothing business in Kantamanto Market in Ghana for over thirty years. After finishing his degree, David took the helm of the business in 2014. He told us a bit about his business at Kantamanto, and what his day-to-day as a reseller looks like. Since David's family has been in this industry for so long, I also wanted to get his perspective on how things have changed in the last 30 years. You'll hear all this and more coming up on the show. Then, we have Sammy. Sammy is graduate of Radford University of Fashion, and today he's a fashion designer and member of the Board of Fashion Ghana. His sustainable streetwear brand utilizes upcycled clothing from Kantamanto Market. Finally, we have Yayra and Kwamena of The Revival and Afro District. These two are vintage wizards. They have spent years sourcing gems from Kantamanto for resale, repair, upcycling and styling. Over the last year they have focused their efforts on promoting a culture of upcycling using clothing that cannot be sold in Kantamanto. Let's hear from them now Let's dive right in! Liz comes from a background in the fashion industry, working as a consultant for several fair trade and eco-fashion startups, working in vintage boutiques, and producing sustainable fashion shows. But she was moved to develop her unique path in the fashion industry when she witnessed the undervaluation of designers and their creations at the highest levels of the industry. She saw all around her that the dominant consumer relationship with fashion is one of excess and exploitation, and wanted to manifest alternatives. Through her work with The OR Foundation Liz has traced that undervaluation through to the secondhand clothing trade, specifically in Accra, Ghana where The OR Foundation has concentrated an intensive multi-year research effort into Kantamanto Market, one of the largest secondhand clothing markets in the world. Through this research project called Dead White Man's Clothes, Liz and her collaborators have expanded perspectives across borders and beyond single stories to show the deep complexities of a global trade in secondhand clothes that serves as both an unsung tool of global waste management and the future of sustainable fashion. On today's show, we really dive into Kantamanto, and the industry in Accra, "global recycling," the concept of waste management, colonialism, agency, equity, and more. And be sure to tune in next week, because we will hear more perspectives and voices from Kantamanto, and you don't want to miss it! Let's dive right in! Pre-Loved Podcast: International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union This show is for all my fellow history-lovers out there, and it's one I have wanted to do for ages. It's about the International Ladies Garment Workers Union -- vintage lovers will know, we hunt for those ILGWU tags! Today I'm joined by Dr. Nick Juravich, who is an Assistant Professor of History and Labor Studies at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Professor Juravich's research interests include labor history, public history, urban history, the history of education, and the history of social movements in the twentieth-century United States. He teaches courses on labor and working-class history, public history and public memory, the history of public schooling, and the history of Greater Boston. Before coming to UMass Boston, he was the Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow in Women's History at the New-York Historical Society, where he curated the exhibition Ladies Garments, Women's Work, Women's Activism, which exhibited in 2019, and that's how I came across his work, and why I asked him to join me on this episode. In this episode, we talk about the role of the ILGWU in labor history, and how it revolutionized garment work in the United States. We discuss why consumers were trained to "look for the union label" and Nick shares some of the amazing stories he discovered researching the exhibition. We close out with a discussion of labor movements and activism today. Thanks, Nick, for coming on. Listeners, I think you're really going to enjoy this one.
