S7 Ep 26S7 Ep26 BLACK RABBIT VINTAGE: owner, Madelyn - on loving and restoring old things, recovering from a devastating fire, and the special stories attached to cherished garments.

Pre-Loved Podcast is a weekly vintage fashion interview show, with guests you'll want to go thrifting with! For more Pre-Loved Podcast, subscribe to our Patreon! Today's episode is with Madelyn of Black Rabbit Vintage, based out of Benton Park in St. Louis. Madelyn has long been a vintage lover – she loves restoring old things to their former glory and passing on stories associated with vintage garments. She says she's been sewing for as long as she was allowed to touch a machine, and since high school she knew she wanted to own her own space – maybe vintage, maybe vinyl, maybe old books? But now, 15 years later she does it all! We hear her whole story with opening Black Rabbit Vintage on today's show. Tragically, in late June, around when we filmed this, Madelyn learned that Sk8 Libourious, an indoor skate park and community center in North City was on fire – the destruction of this space was devastating in its own right, but it was also where Madelyn stored a large amount of Black Rabbit Vintage's back store. Luckily, her storage room did not fully burn in the fire and she was able to get a majority of my things out of the building, but it has been a long restoration and recovery journey. A journey which we talk about on today's show – I also want to flag that there is a GoFundMe page for Black Rabbit's recovery efforts linked in the shownotes, if you're inclined to help out another vintage-lover. All this and more in today's episode, so let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [7:19] Madelyn grew up with a love of old things and church basement rummage sales, and we discuss her journey to owning a vintage store. Last October she leased a space, convinced the owner of the building to paint it bubblegum pink, and is now proud to call the big pink building a destination for vintage clothing lovers, running a consignment clothing store as well as the flea markets out of the big pink building. And we get to hear the whole story on today's show, so let's just dive right in! S7 Ep 16S7 Ep16 DAISY JONES & THE SIX: costume designer, Denise Wingate - on using vintage to bring to life the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band, her dream project!

Pre-Loved Podcast is a weekly vintage fashion interview show, with guests you'll want to go thrifting with! For more Pre-Loved Podcast, subscribe to our Patreon! Today's episode is with Denise Wingate, the costume designer behind Daisy Jones & the Six! If you haven't seen it yet – run don't walk, the costuming is fabulous – Daisy Jones & the Six is about the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band, based on the novel, written in rock documentary style, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A Los Angeles native, Denise began her career designing costumes and touring with none other than The Bangles, before segueing into television costuming. Throughout her career, she's always prioritized working with vintage – and because of her true love for vintage fashion and music history, it's really clear that this project was an ultimate dream role for her. We talk about all this, and the incredible vintage looks in Daisy Jones & the Six, on today's show – let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:09] Denise moved to Hollywood at 16 and grew up attending new wave shows. [4:28] Denise goes on a world tour with the Bangles, working as their stylist. [8:51] Costume design is about developing a character through clothing, and Denise's process for Daisy Jones & the Six. [13:57] The inspiration for young Daisy Jones was a young Joni Mitchell, young Linda Ronstadt – and then she morphed into Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks when she becomes a rock star. [14:40] The inspiration for Camila Dunne was a young Ali MacGraw, and then she grows into Bianca Jagger in her rockstar wife era. [14:50] Suki Waterhouse's character, cool-girl keyboardist Karen, was inspired by Patti Smith, Joan Jett, and Suzie Quatro. [15:52] Staying true to fashion moments mentioned in the book, like Daisy's first recording session outfit, or the beaded kaftan she wears in the pool. [18:45] Denise estimates she had to pull about 1,500 looks for this show! [20:15] Her sourcing process for finding special vintage pieces for the show. [23:40] Daisy Jones' coat collection – that choice for the character, and Denise's favorites, including this one that she sourced in Paris. [26:11] Camilla's transformation into Bianca Jagger would not be complete without this leopard print dress from Pickwick Vintage Market. [28:32] Denise found a patchwork leather jacket from Gandalf the Wizard in Long Beach, which she used for Graham Dunne. [30:27] Denise found a North Beach leather whipstitch white suit that Karen wore for the Aurora cover shoot. [31:44] A lot of the jewelry on the show originally belonged to Denise's grandparents, including Daisy's squash blossom necklaces. [32:45] In the 70s, rockstars would have been wearing vintage from the 30s, 40s, and older, so Denise used those kinds of pieces in the show, too. [35:27] Daisy Jones' on-stage persona, and how they used costuming to bring that out. [36:50] The final on-stage look for Daisy Jones was a gold vintage Halston dress that they turned into a cape, and a 1930s crochet metallic dress underneath. [44:55] The beauty and creativity in re-use. [49:17] Shopping estate sales with her son, also a vintage shopper, in New Orleans. S7 Ep 12S7 Ep912 the FABRIC Act: LIVE SHOW featuring designers and changemakers Mahdiyyah, Patricia Voto, and Thania Peck - on groundbreaking policy for the US garment industry.

Pre-Loved Podcast is a weekly vintage fashion interview show, with guests you'll want to go thrifting with! For more Pre-Loved Podcast, subscribe to our Patreon! Today's show is a special one because it's a LIVE episode from a panel I did in New York a couple of weeks ago. As many of you know, or will come to learn through this discussion, for far to long American garment workers have faced unsafe working conditions, wage theft, and piecework pay, which often prioritizes fast fashion over worker safety. The proposed federal FABRIC Act, introduces groundbreaking new workplace protections and manufacturing incentives to cement the US as the global leader in responsible apparel production. This policy would protect nearly 100,000 American garment workers and revitalize the garment industry in the United States by improving working conditions, reforming the piece-rate pay scale and investing in domestic apparel production. Together, by championing the FABRIC Act, we are reweaving the very fabric of the future US garment industry. On this week's episode, I talk with three other sustainable fashion changemakers about how they're advocating for progress in the fashion industry through the FABRIC Act. Let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [8:07] What were the lightbulb moments that turned our panelists into fashion changemakers? [20:45] Why living wages are essential to sustainable fashion. But what led Carley to the Lucky Sweater idea? She missed finding community through clothing! Lucky Sweater is a community app that allows users to connect and trade clothing with like-minded communities. Lucky Sweater's first community trading space was focused on slow and sustainable fashion brands, and the team recently launched a community for makers to trade handmade clothing, accessories, and supplies. We chat about all this and more on today's episode, so let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:27] Growing up during peak "mall culture" in Los Angeles. [6:11] How Carley's dad exposed her to Melrose Ave. thrifting. [14:05] Starting her blog, Thoughtful Flamingo, and how the conversations she had inspired Lucky Sweater. [15:23] Early clothing trading communities on Instagram and Reddit. [22:38] Lucky Sweater's focus on slow trading to not contribute to overconsumption and "haul culture" with secondhand. [23:08] Carely's learnings from being a first time founder and entrepreneur. [29:37] How trading lowers the barrier to entry on slow fashion. [35:49] The launch of a me-made trading community on Lucky Sweater where you can swap handmade clothing, accessories, and supplies. Her writing and styling has been published in Minneapolis Star Tribune, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Midwest Home, and she served as the Style Editor of Minnesota Monthly and the Fashion Director of Rosedale Center. Building on 15 years in the local fashion community as a stylist and fashion reporter, Jahna co-founded Fashion Week MN in 2015 as a vehicle to support the local fashion community. Most recently, she founded her own vintage fashion brand, Rosella Vintage, and is a regular vendor at the Minneapolis Vintage Market, and at other pop-ups around the Twin Cities area. Coming soon – late September — you'll be able to find Rosella Vintage at a collective vintage shop called Olio Vintage, so you'll have more opportunities to shop in-person! She's also planning to launch her own website around this time. In this episode, we talk about the Minneapolis fashion scene she grew up in, being a part of local fashion shows, working as a fashion writer, the start of her vintage shop, and her favorite style moments! When I chat with her, it really brings to light the importance of community in creating a great local vintage scene, and I think that leads us in to the secondhand half of our show really well! For the second half of the show, we're headed to a Minneapolis Vintage Market event. Now, the market rotates through the Twin Cities every month (super cool!) but this particular market was actually at the Triple-A baseball stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints, a Minneapolis Twins affiliate!
