Ep 2452022 Midterm Landscape & Legal Weed
Our brand-new NPR/PBS NewsHour Poll asked Americans to rate Republicans and Democrats on a wide array of key issues. The results provide deeper insight into how voters may choose their local candidates in November's midterm elections. Pluralities view the GOP as more equipped to deal with big issues such as the economy and crime while Democrats are favored on issues like climate change and abortion that, historically, have been less of a factor in election outcomes. We explore whether the past will be prologue this time around.New Jersey has joined the growing list of U.S. states legalizing marijuana. And, it turns out, a surprising number of Americans of every stripe support the idea. So this begs the question, why is buying or using weed still a Federal crime and why are the odds of changing that so slim? Finally, Mary Griffith helps Lee get through this week's fun fact. It turns out, cartoon pets are not his expertise.

Ep 244Earth Day Special: Evangelicalism & Environmentalism
Happy Earth Day! In honor of today, we're looking at climate change from two perspectives.First, going carbon neutral. According to a recent Pew survey, Americans largely favor taking steps towards becoming carbon neutral. Other polls show a majority of Americans -- in some cases majorities of Democrats and Republicans -- are willing to make sacrifices to address global warming, but a majority also think it may not be enough. Then, Katherine Hayhoe, Chief Scientist at the Nature Conservancy, as well as Professor of Political Science at Texas Tech, joins us to talk about faith and climate science. As a Christian and a scientist, she has a fascinating perspective on the interconnected nature of faith and climate change. You can find out more about her work here, by following her on Twitter @KHayhoe, or by getting her book “Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World.” Finally, our fun fact is about another changing climate -- fast food! Why are polls misaligned with sales?

Ep 243Crime Concerns & Baseball Bummers
A new Gallup poll shows that for the first time since 2016, Americans are worried "a great deal" about crime. Republicans say crime is flourishing in Democrat-led cities, but the stats say otherwise: The states with the highest murder rates voted for Donald Trump in 2020. Still, crime overall is still on the rise and Democrats recognize the political peril it provides. What do polls say about how big a deal it could be in the 2022 midterms?Baseball fans were forced to wait a week for opening day due to the labor battle between the players and the team owners. Let's just say polls show the fans aren't happy about this. But is that really the biggest problem baseball faces? It is hard to be left-handed in a world designed for right-handed people, or is it? We have one lefty on our team who wants to be heard -- and he's raising his (left) hand.

Ep 242Does "Don't Say Gay" Threaten LGBTQ Gains?
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed into law the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill which bans some classroom discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity. But, is this what Americans want? Harvard University professor Michael Bronski (@MichaelBronski) joins us to discuss the new law, recent polls, and to give his perspective about what may really be going on with this law and others like it.Then, parents are allegedly angry with the treatment of their kids' education during the pandemic and there's some polling to back that up. But, jumping to the conclusion that this may benefit Republicans in the 2022 midterms is not necessarily supported by the evidence. Our resident parent expert (and parent...and Executive Producer) Mary Griffith joins to discuss. Finally, just in time for the boys of spring returning, Lee's fun fact is all about baseball in another era.

Ep 241American Pessimism and Permanent Daylight Savings
Our latest America Now: National Outlook Index is out, and it shows Americans have turned slightly more pessimistic about the US with the index at 6.4. The biggest factor is concern about the economy, with the economic index at 5.4. Other parts of the index are fairly steady, and we discuss how the index is reflecting the mood of the country.Congress seems to finally agree on something! The Senate unanimously passed a bill to make Daylight Savings Time permanent. But, do Americans agree? We look into what Americans see as the benefits and the dangers of this change.Have you ever woken up from an amazing dream, but just can't seem to remember it? This week's fun fact shows you may not be alone.Make sure to check out the entire America Now: National Outlook Index here: maristpoll.com/america-now-index/

Ep 240Seniors Get More Tech Savvy in the Pandemic
Congress has been unpopular among Americans for a long time, and the current approval rating of 18% isn't anywhere near the historic low. But, it's half what it was a year ago and one group is most responsible for the decline. Who are they and why are they losing the love? Then, we're looking at the relationship between the elderly and tech. S. Jay Olshansky, Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, joins to discuss new studies that show adults 65 and older have a strong desire to use technology but lack the know-how to do so. Yet, thanks to the pandemic, that's changing fast. Our fun fact this week is all about the daily newspaper, and it's so good, we went back to 1937 just to find it!See S. Jay Olshansky's work here: http://www.sjayolshansky.com/sjo/Background.html or twitter @sjayolshansky. Ep 239Women's History Month & NYC Mayor So Far
For Women's History Month, the Poll Hub team is looking at what Americans think about the progress of women in society versus what some data shows. It's especially timely since the pandemic has had outsized impacts on women -- especially moms and service industry workers.Next up, our new poll of New York City residents provided some good news for the new mayor Eric Adams. But his approval rating only tells part of the story. We unpack the data to see what's really happening. You can see the poll here: https://maristpoll.marist.edu/polls/marist-new-york-city-poll-mayor-eric-adams-job-performance-march-2022/The team wraps up this week's episode with an up-"beat" discussion of musical instruments.

Ep 238Poll Timing and Compensation for College Athletes
The plethora of post-State of the Union polls underscores the importance of a poll's timing. The Poll Hub team analyzes a handful of polls to compare how the numbers change with just a few days difference in field. Today’s outlier could be tomorrow’s conventional wisdom. The Poll Hub team also welcomes Jane McManus, Director of the Marist College Center for Sports Communication, to discuss the results of the Center's latest collaboration with the Marist College Poll. The topics: paying student athletes and sports betting. This week's fun fact is sure to rile some of you up! We tackle the big debate of cats or dogs.About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 237The State of the Union and Ukraine
President Joe Biden's State of the Union address is in the rearview mirror, and it's time to look at how Americans view his job performance. According to brand new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll results, Biden enjoys a bump in his approval rating, with 47% saying they approve of his overall job performance, an 8-point increase from last week. Approval of his handling of Ukraine and the economy also saw a boost. The team dives into how the numbers have changed and discuss the impact for the Biden Administration. Then, the Russia-Ukraine conflict is front and center globally. We are joined by special guest Dr. Greta Uehling, cultural anthropologist, lecturer, and professor at the University of Michigan. Dr. Uehling shares her research about the refugee situation in Ukraine and what she thinks the future holds. If you are interested in finding out more about Dr. Uehling's work, check out her new book titled, "Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine."If you are looking for ways to aid the humanitarian effort in Ukraine, our team has compiled some resources for you to explore:https://www.care.org/https://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/what-we-do/news-stories/news/msf-assesses-response-ukraine-conflict-escalateshttps://www.gofundme.com/f/keep-ukraines-media-going More can be found here:https://www.cbsnews.com/news/russia-ukraine-refugees-donations/ About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 236Biden's Grim February
EThe results from our brand new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll do not paint a pretty picture for Joe Biden. His approval rating is the lowest it has ever been in our poll. Majorities think he's failed and hasn't lived up to his campaign promises. Plus, most Americans want Biden to shift his focus from COVID to something else -- the biggest share arguing for inflation to get more attention from the White House. Then, we've talked to a lot of experts and sorted through a lot of data trying to understand how work has changed with the pandemic. On this episode, we're talking to UCSF Sociologist Dr. Kristen Harknett about her work documenting how shift workers have adapted to the changes. Even as employers complain of having to scramble to fill vacancies, there is new evidence that service workers are not winning any meaningful, long-term gains. Finally, have you been itching to get back to concerts, or even the opera? We're going back to 1973 to see what inflation has done to ticket prices!Check out the study here: https://shift.hks.harvard.edu/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/COVIDUpdate_Brief_Final.pdfFollow Kristen on Twitter: @KristenHarknettAbout Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 235Is the Big Quit a Good Thing?
CNN made a mistake recently when reporting on their own poll. But, before they could correct it (which they quickly did), Fox picked it up and reported the error as actual results. This situation doesn't help the credibility of news organizations or the polling industry. And it wasn't even the poll's fault! Then, Mark Muro, a Senior Fellow at Brookings Metro, joins to discuss his research on how the Great Resignation may be helping not only workers, but the economy as a whole. It's the kind of counterintuitive look at data we love! Ep 234Legitimate Political Discourse and the RNC
ELast week, RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel said what happened at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th was "legitimate political discourse." The highest-ranking elected Republican in America, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was having none of it -- saying plainly it was an "insurrection." But is the RNC closer to the views of most Republican voters? And could it help stem the erosion of support for Democrats among suburban women? It seems that, with each week, there's a new poll pitting hypothetical 2024 Presidential candidates. Sure, it's fun to speculate but do polls this far out have any value at all? Barbara suggests they do -- if they're reported correctly. Finally, the only-in-February Fun Fact pits the Super Bowl against Valentine's Day. What fun! About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 233Biden Doesn't Buy the Polls & Filibuster Fever
The seemingly endless debate over whether to revise or end the filibuster took up much of the fall in the Senate, and despite all indications that there aren't enough votes to do anything about it, Democrats, in particular, are still talking change.Recent polling suggests that this is a very partisan issue but is there something more in the data? We take a look -- especially as the Senate gears up for a new Supreme Court nominee -- something that is no longer so fraught thanks to the last reform of the filibuster. Then, presidents and polls. When Biden was recently asked about his low numbers with moderates and independents, he said "I don't believe the polls." He's in good company. Nearly every one of his modern predecessors has said the same -- usually when their poll numbers are down -- but it belies a truth: Most presidents depend on polls. Finally, have you ever wondered if scientists could ever clone a dinosaur? This week's fun fact looks at just that! About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Poll Hub is produced by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, home of America’s leading independent college public opinion poll, the Marist Poll.Lee Miringoff (Director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion), Barbara Carvalho (Director of the Marist Poll), and Jay DeDapper (Director of Innovation at the Marist Poll) dig deep to give you a look at the inner workings of polls and what they tell us about our world, our country, and ourselves.

Ep 232The Great American Burnout
EIn December 2021, Gallup found that 1 out of 3 Americans feel the effects of burnout "often" but we wanted to know what's fueling this fire. It's partly due to some of the workplace changes wrought by the COVID pandemic and partly due to our collective American pessimism. One big question is, will we stayed burned out once the clouds clear?Next, we are joined by Dr. Kat Schrier, Associate Professor and Founding Director of the Games and Emerging Media program at Marist College, and author of We are the Gamers: How Games Teach Ethics and Civics. With the popularity of digital spaces on the rise, there's a lot of worry about what happens next. Do they help or hurt society, kids, adults, and the culture? Finally, we hope this fun fact won't burst your bubble, but this week is all about chewing gum!Keep up with Dr. Kat Schrier on Twitter at @drgamermom.About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 231The Politics of Religion & Advocacy Group Polling
A new survey from Pew Research Center finds that 3 in 10 Americans consider themselves to be unaffiliated with religion, a number which has been on the rise. Marist College Professor of History, Dr. Sally Dwyer-McNulty, joins the team to discuss what's behind this trend and the role of partisan politics.Conducting a survey for an advocacy group can attract criticism, but it doesn't have to. The Marist College Poll team takes on the topic and shares why and how accuracy and objectivity don't need to be sacrificed when doing these types of polls. Finally, this week's fun fact has the team looking into the famous debate.... coffee or tea? About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 230Voting Rights at a Crossroads
This week, President Joe Biden travelled to Georgia hoping to advance voting rights legislation that's been stalled in the Democratic-controlled Senate for months. At the same time, a small bipartisan group is working on a more limited proposal. Where are Americans on all of this? A new Morning Consult/Politico poll shows broad support for every component of the main proposals, BUT the issue of voting rights in general is not a priority right now. That does not mean all Americans are on the same page, however, as we discovered in our NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll from late last year. Then, the COVID Omicron surge has spread faster and farther than even the initial wave. Vaccines have kept the death rate much lower but infections and hospitalizations in many places are higher than ever. The third time is certainly not a charm for Americans, especially in how they see the government's handling of it. We dig into several polls to see just how exhausted America is over COVID as we approach year 3 of the pandemic. For this week's fun fact, we go back to 1997 for a cookie quiz. Mmmmm. Delish! Ep 229Anniversary + Birthday: The Capitol Riots One Year Later and Twitter at Sweet 16
This week marks the one-year anniversary of the Capitol riot. Our new poll with NPR and the PBS NewsHour asks Americans their thoughts about it one year later. Was it an "insurrection" or a "legitimate protest?" We also ask about opinions regarding the ongoing investigation. A majority believe it to be appropriate, but a significant minority characterize it as a witch hunt. As expected, there are clear partisan divisions on every question...but one.Next, we look at Twitter as the social media platform approaches its 16th birthday. How do Americans use it and which ones use it most? Pew Research conducted a study looking at the behaviors and attitudes of Twitter users and there are some interesting -- and surprising -- findings. Finally, we go way back in time to 1946 for our fun fact. Should the ability to swim be a requirement to graduate high school? About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 228Wrapping up 2021
We are in the final stretch of 2021, which means it's time for end of the year polling! We're focusing on how Americans feel about the holiday season, online shopping, and what they think is ahead in 2022.And then Lee's final Fun Fact of the year is for our night owls! It's either an age-old question or an old age one...

Ep 227Is Extreme Weather Linked to Climate Change? American Opinions
It was only days ago that a series of tornadoes ripped across Kentucky destroying houses, towns, and lives. With extreme weather events on the rise, we wanted to see what Americans think about this "new normal" and how much they connect these historic weather outbreaks with climate change.Gig work has been all the buzz for about a decade but what will happen to its popularity once the pandemic ends? No one is certain what any type of work will look like but gig, or contract work, certainly seems likely to stay. Still, a surprisingly few Americans are full-time gig workers. Finally, it's that time of year again. Time to make your New Year's resolution... or not? We look to see just how many Americans will be taking part in the age old tradition of a resolution.

Ep 226Biden’s Stimulus Programs & Ranked Choice Voting
The latest NPR/Marist Poll survey is all about Biden and his economic plans. The team breaks down how Americans feel about everything from the stimulus checks to the Build Back Better bill to the recently signed bipartisan infrastructure law. Many Americans believe that these programs will help in many ways — except when it comes to their #1 economic concern — inflation.Next, we are joined by special guest Deb Otis (@debtheotis), Senior Research Analyst in the Government Affairs Department at Fair Vote, a non-profit that promotes ranked choice voting (RCV). This past summer RCV faced its biggest test in the US when New York City’s municipal elections used it. So, what worked, what didn't, and where does RCV go from here? Finally, it's the holiday season so we’re looking at holiday spending for Lee’s fun fact. We look at 2 polls, a little more than 10 years apart to see just how much Americans spend each holiday season and spoiler: it's a lot.

Ep 225American Inflation & Self Defense Laws
America’s inflation rate reached 6.2% in October 2021, marking the highest it has been in 3 decades. With President Biden’s public opinion suffering, we wanted to see if this is a uniquely American thing going on. Spoiler alert! It's not. With rising inflation rates worldwide and world leader’s approval ratings sinking, it seems we and Biden are in good company.Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted on all charges after he shot three men, killing two and injuring one, during a protest in Kenosha. He argued it was self-defense. Ahmaud Arbery's killers also said they shot in self-defense but the jury in that case rejected the claim. In light of these back-to-back decisions that gripped the nation, we ask if the debate on guns in America has fundamentally changed. Finally, it’s the holiday season and for many that means dreams of a snowy winter! Or does it? We look at how Americans feel about this chilly topic.

Ep 224Americans' Economic Concerns & Women's Sports
This week, we released an all new NPR/Marist Poll survey all about the economy and what most concerns Americans about it. Then, we shift gears to the Build Back Better plan. It passed the House but faces a tougher road in the Senate. We look at what polling says about how popular the contents of BBB are and how it could change Americans' perceptions of the President.Next, we are joined by Jane McManus, the director of the Center for Sports Communication at Marist College, to look at our recent poll about women's sports. There are some surprising findings about how much coverage sports fans think women's sports deserve. See more of her thoughts on this issue on Deadspin. Finally, how do you plan to shop this holiday season? Online or in person? That's the fun fact.About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 223China Shock & What the World Thinks of the U.S.
Special Guest Dr. Gordon Hanson, co-author of On the Persistence of the China Shock, joins us to discuss his research. He's looked at the Chinese economic transformation from 1990 onwards and has discovered fascinating insights into what the U.S. got wrong in dealing with it -- and what we can learn from those mistakes. One big finding is that the impact was, and still is, very different depending on where in the U.S. you live.Next, a new Pew Research study of 17 countries with advanced economies and how their citizens view different aspects of America. Some of the highlighted topics in the study are our healthcare system, model of democracy, discrimination, military, and approval of the President. Spoiler alert! It ain't pretty. Finally, our fun fact is just in time for Thanksgiving! You are definitely going to want to stay to get a piece of this one!Dr. Gordon Hanson is the Peter Wertheim Professor in Urban Policy at Harvard Kennedy School. Ep 222Getting Granular With Climate Change Public Opinion
This week we’re exploring a new tool that shows what Americans think about global warming in a very different way. Dr. Jennifer Marlon joins us to talk about how the Yale Climate Opinion Maps were created and how useful they are. It turns out that looking at opinion in this new way may help us better understand climate change.Next, our America Now Index is back and better than ever! The ANI is now quarterly and we explain the motivations behind the change. Then we look at the brand new Index numbers to see how Americans are feeling about economics, health, community, and society and government. Then a very topical Fun Fact from Lee. Ep 221November Elections Fallout & The State of Democracy
Election Day has come and gone with powerful lessons for Democrats and Republicans. Jessica Taylor is the Senate and Governors Editor for The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter and she helps us sort through the hot takes to get at what may really matter most about Tuesday's results.Next, our new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll tried to get a sense of how Americans are thinking about elections in general – specifically around issues of trust. There's broad agreement American democracy is in trouble but a very partisan split on what – and who – is to blame. But one question, in particular, has the team very worried. We note interesting reports on this from NPR’s Domenico Montanaro and NewHour's Laura Santhanam. And, for Lee's Fun Fact, cats or dogs? Find out where Americans stand on this controversial question.Follow Jessica on Twitter @JessicaTaylor. Ep 220Who Do Americans Trust?
A new polled released by CNN comes as the Democrats continue to negotiate the details of their massive social spending package. If passed, the $1T plus spending plan would expand education, health care and childcare support, as well as tackling the climate crisis and making further investments in infrastructure. But who supports it? The team looks at the latest data from CNN and breaks down party support.Who do you trust? In Gallup's September update, Americans trust in politicians, the legislative branch, and even themselves is, in some cases, at an all-time low. What’s at stake? If Americans lose more trust in ourselves in the years ahead, could it create a "crisis for overall confidence in the U.S. democratic system?”Happy early Halloween! With the 31st quickly approaching, the team looks at what Americans are doing to celebrate the spooky season this year!About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 219Poll Hub Live!
A new poll from Pew Research shows that two-thirds of Republicans say they want Trump to remain a political figure and 44% want him to run for office again. Democrats couldn’t disagree more. No surprise there as the GOP is pretty much Trump’s party right now. But, the survey also uncovered significant differences between the parties in how people think about criticism of their party leaders.Next up, a look at how the increasingly incessant hunt for clicks in journalism combined with the proliferation of new and often shoddy polls is leading to a problematic perfect storm. A recent column in the Washington Post taking a New York Times reporter to task for publicizing a totally bogus poll from Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene is a good place to start. We also talk about a poll in the California Governor recall race that demonstrates a variation on the theme. And then a conversation about polling in our hyperpartisan era. When everything from wearing a mask to choosing a restaurant seems to fall along party lines, what chance does the polling industry have? New research from Duke University shows that people are more likely to trust a poll if it backs their own opinions. And stay for Lee’s fun fact, just in time for the trick-or-treaters!

Ep 218How’s Kathy Hochul Doing With New Yorkers?
Our latest poll of New Yorkers focuses on attitudes about new Governor Kathy Hochul who took office after Andrew Cuomo resigned. We’re discussing her approval rating, her leadership scores, and how she stacks up in a hypothetical Democratic primary next year. We also look at how Cuomo is faring after his self-inflicted fall from grace. Are voters even open to the idea of a comeback? In the second segment, we’re joined by Daniel Cox from the American Enterprise Institute to discuss his new report on American public schools in the age of pandemic mandates and new culture war battles. His data highlights what Americans think should be taught and their fears when it comes to COVID-19 spreading in schools. Ep 217American Opinions About the Texas Abortion Law
The Supreme Court is back in session and the justices are hearing multiple cases whose outcomes could radically reshape the culture – abortion being the biggest. With the release of the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll, we investigate how the public feels about abortion – in particular, some extreme parts of the new Texas abortion law.Social media is a huge part of how politicians talk to their constituents. But, the way politicians from each party talk on social media is incredibly different. The team discusses new information from Pew Research that helps quantify what many of us suspect: politics on social media is increasingly siloed by party. And, for the first time ever, Lee steps aside to allow a special guest to host his Fun Fact segment. Harry Enten, Senior Data Reporter for CNN and Host of CNN’s new Margins of Error podcast, joins us with a fun fact – and a whole lot more! Ep 216New Polls on Biden and COVID + Polling Accuracy
The team kicks off this episode discussing the data from our latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll. We go through everything from Biden’s approval rating to election fairness, from pandemic stress levels to vaccination mandates. What do our results mean and how do they stack up to what other polls are finding?Pollsters like us have a rare opportunity to gauge the reliability of our surveys. When it comes to asking about the vaccination status of Americans, we can benchmark our data against the “hard” numbers reported by the CDC on the number of vaccinated Americans. Usually, the only opportunity to do this is an election. According to Pew Research’s recent analysis, public polling on the COVID-19 vaccination has aligned very closely with the CDC’s data. Finally, we discuss one of the most controversial debates of our time. Do you prefer Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts? Or is it just Dunkin’ now…. Ep 215New Polling Method at CNN & Changing White Evangelicals
Out with the old and in with the new. CNN is updating its polling methodologies with a new approach that relies on one of the older polling modes: snail mail. Why? As with nearly all quality pollsters, CNN has had issues reaching a truly representative sample of people across America’s political groups. Jennifer Agiesta explains what’s behind the change and how she hopes it will help.In another issue facing pollsters, a key demographic group, “White Evangelicals,” has both grown and changed. They are a critical core part of Donald Trump’s base, but they appear to be different in significant ways from self-identified white evangelical voters of the past. For instance, they appear to share a political viewpoint more than a religious one. How should pollsters respond in reporting their numbers and influence? Finally, can you imagine a time without a phone? Lee’s fun fact this week takes it all the way back to 1937 to ask who had a telephone in their home.Jennifer Agiesta is the Director of Polling and Election Analytics at CNN. Ep 214Debt Limit Showdown and the 4-Day Workweek
Will the U.S. default? Will the government shut down? Will Republicans or Democrats blink? Very soon, Congress must vote to lift the $28.4 trillion debt limit or there could be catastrophic economic consequences like a default or government shutdown. What do Americans think about this? And what if there is a government shutdown? Last time around (2019) 58% of Americans said the shutdown was “a very serious problem.” But, opinions tend to fall along partisan lines. The pandemic has changed a lot about work for a lot of people. But, how many of those changes will be permanent? Some companies (and one country) have moved to a 4-day workweek. In recent polling, working Americans like the idea. Some say it prevents burnout and keeps workers happier and more engaged. We talk with Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, four-time author and founder of Strategy and Rest, a consultancy devoted to helping companies and workers “harness the power of rest” in order to shorten workdays while staying focused and productive. You can follow Alex Pang’s work on Twitter @askpang, as well as his company's website www.strategy.rest.Finally, are you able to remember faces or names better? Ep 213Unprecedented Texas Abortion Law Meets Long-Term Public Opinion
Recently, Texas has been all over the news for its new, controversial abortion law that prohibits the procedure after six weeks while also allowing almost any private citizen to sue abortion providers…or literally anyone who assists a woman to get an abortion. That could mean Uber drivers, family, friends, and others. But, does the public agree with this? In 2019, we asked adults, “With respect to the abortion issue, do you consider yourself pro-life or pro-choice?” 57% said they were pro-choice, 35% said they were pro-life, and 8% were unsure. Between those pro/anti poles, however, is a LOT of gray area.On September 14th, California voters will decide whether to recall Governor Gavin Newsom. This will be the second time in California’s history that a recall election for Governor has happened. How will it turn out? There have been a fair number of polls, but we explain why polling in California is hard to begin with – and the details of this election make it close to impossible. Finally, we wrap up with a fun fact from Lee all about tattoos! Ep 212Biden Approval Slides on Afghanistan Pullout
Despite broad public support for leaving Afghanistan to Afghanis, Americans are not pleased with how the troop withdrawal happened. Biden’s overall approval rating has slid to a new low in a new NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist Poll, at least in part, as a result.Even approval of Biden’s handling of the pandemic has dropped a bit, despite the number of “vaccine refusers” declining and most vaccinated Americans telling us they’ll take a booster shot, according to another new Marist/NPR/PBS Newshour Poll.NPR Correspondent, Hansi Lo Wang joins Poll Hub this week to talk about new Census data that’s gotten a lot of attention – the apparent big decline in the number of white Americans since the 2010 Census. But his reporting shows it’s not that simple. How the Census classifies “whiteness” and how Americans answer race questions has changed. That has potentially large implications for a lot of us, especially those of us who poll for a living.Last but never least, Lee’s fun fact! How does Labor Day make you feel?About Poll HubEach week, Poll Hub goes behind the science to explain how polling works, what polls really show, and what the numbers really mean. Ep 211Vaccine Approval & Mandates: What Will it Take?
EOne COVID vaccine has been approved; vaccine mandates are spreading fast; deaths and hospitalizations are increasing, and so are the number of daily doses going into arms. What to make of all this info? This week, Poll Hub looks at recent polls to try and understand whether any of this will move the unvaccinated to action. Then, Biden got the CDC to extend the national eviction moratorium, but the Supreme Court overruled him. Where will Americans line up?Finally, Lee's Fun Fact is sure to hit it out of the park! Ep 210The End of a Long War: Afghanistan
After 20 years, US troops were leaving Afghanistan for the last time, when the Afghan government and security forces collapsed under Taliban advances. Immediate polling shows Americans are conflicted about the messy and deadly pullout, but it comes after a long, steady decline in support for the long war as seen in years of Gallup polling on the issue. Then, the detailed 2020 Census data has been released and America has changed – a lot! We are more diverse than ever with people of color representing 43% of the total US population in 2020, compared to 34% in 2010. Cities are blossoming, rural areas are emptying out, and the suburbs may hold the keys to both Republican and Democratic redistricting efforts. Plus, what does it mean for pollsters who depend on the data to make accurate calculations? We round off the episode with Lee’s fun fact. This week, we throw it back all the way to the 50’s to look at American’s pet peeves. Who knows? This week on Poll Hub, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced he will step down in light of the recent report which found Cuomo sexually harassed nearly a dozen women. Does Cuomo have any goodwill left among New Yorkers? We discuss. Then, job approval ratings ebb and flow. But, is the recent fluctuation in President Joe Biden’s job approval rating a sign of trouble to come? We take a look at the most recent poll numbers. Then, it’s Lee’s weekly fun fact. Cox is the director of the Survey Center on American Life and a senior fellow in polling and public opinion at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI). The topic: the Center’s recent study about American friendship. We discuss Adams’ victory and his uncertain path to the nomination. Then, what’s next in the fight against COVID-19? President Joe Biden’s goal of having 70% of Americans vaccinated against the virus fell short. Ep 202Rapid Changes in American Attitudes About LGBTQ+ Issues
It’s LGBTQ+ Pride Month in much of the U.S. with the post-COVID return of the big annual parades in NYC and San Francisco. Seems like a good time to look back at how quickly Americans’ opinions moved on a key issue to the community -- same-sex marriage. Pollsters didn’t even ask about it until the mid-90s and two decades later, it was the law of the land. But does that mean similar acceptance will come at a similar trajectory on other concerns to the queer community such as trans rights? And, Infrastructure Week is back! Well, not exactly, but the Senate seems closer than it’s been in at least a decade to cobbling together a bipartisan bill to rebuild some of America’s allegedly crumbling infrastructure. What do Americans think about the various proposals being discussed? Then, we end with a Fun Fact near and dear to Lee’s heart: the NY Yankees. Do Americans approve of how President Joe Biden is handling the issue, and do they think future generations will be able to bridge the racial divide? We analyze the results of the latest national NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll. Then, the NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist Poll also released new numbers on the COVID-19 pandemic.
