A teacher once told a devotee who was in sorrow, “You are virtuous.” But to another devotee who was content, he struck. Seeing this, a new disciple asked a senior disciple about the meaning behind the teacher’s actions. The senior explained: “One who suffers realizes his own faults and moves forward on the spiritual path. But one who remains content does not know his faults, nor does he try to know them. Therefore, the teacher struck him to make him aware of his shortcomings and to guide him toward self-improvement”.
