Desdemona begs Iago to help her regain Othello’s love as Emilia curses whoever it was that turned Othello against her. That evening, during a state dinner in the Vaulted Hall of the Citadel, Roderigo confronts Iago in frustration. Iago manages to convince Roderigo to corner Cassio and lure him into another fight. After the dinner, Othello says goodnight to his guests, then tells Desdemona to go to bed. Alone with Emilia, Desdemona finds some comfort and remembers a song from her childhood. Later, in the alleys near Famagusta’s Central Piazza, Iago and Roderigo hide and wait for Cassio. Roderigo attacks him as he passes. They grapple as Iago stealthily leaps out and slices Cassio’s leg nearly in half. Cassio calls out for help as he battles Roderigo, leaving him badly wounded. Othello hears Cassio’s cries and quietly applauds Iago’s fulfillment of his wish that Cassio be killed. Gratiano and Lodovico arrive on the scene as Iago quietly puts an end to Roderigo’s misery. Bianca comes to Cassio’s aid. Iago blames her for the ambush before making a public display of his sadness and dismay at seeing Roderigo lying dead. Emilia arrives and offers comfort to Iago before lashing out at Bianca for putting Cassio and her husband in danger. Back in their bedroom, later still, Othello approaches his sleeping wife and kisses her for the last time. Iago’s trap works out just as he planned: Roderigo lures the drunken Cassio into a fight that escalates into a brawl, injuring Montano as he and Iago struggle to break it up. Othello arrives and restores order. Iago dutifully and diplomatically reports the sequence of events leading to the brawl to Othello, who immediately expels Cassio from his post. Cassio, distraught, privately expresses his remorse to Iago, who encourages him to seek to restore his position through Desdemona. Cassio is persuaded by Iago’s reassurances and arrives at the Citadel the next morning to visit with Desdemona. She receives his supplications with an open heart, promising to do everything she can to get Othello to restore his position of trust and service. Meanwhile, Iago, now Othello’s closest advisor, quietly expresses his discomfort at seeing Cassio in Desdemona’s company as they pass by. After hearing Desdemona’s pleas on behalf of Cassio, Othello presses Iago to explain his misgivings. Iago craftily plants a seed of doubt in Othello’s heart, cautioning him to beware of jealousy while encouraging him to keep an eye on Cassio, and on his wife. The Duke leaves it to Othello to decide whether or not to take Desdemona with him to Cypress. Othello puts her in Iagos’ care for the journey, with Iago’s wife Emilia at her service. Alone with Iago, Roderigo laments his heartbreak, threatening to kill himself in despair. Iago convinces him that Desdemona will eventually get tired of Othello and will be open to Roderigo’s affections if he can be patient. Iago inwardly conspires to weave Cassio into his web in his plot to destroy Othello. Later, in Cypress, word arrives that the Turkish fleet has been vanquished thanks to Othello’s leadership and to stormy seas. Cassio lands ashore and welcomes Iago, Emilia and Desdemona as they arrive. Othello soon lands with his soldiers and lovingly greets his wife. Once alone again, Iago tells Roderigo that Desdemona is in love with Cassio and that he should pick a fight with him in order to undermine Cassio’s reputation, persuading him that without Cassio in the way, Roderigo’s chances with Desdemona will be greatly improved. Inwardly, Iago vows to use Roderigo to get rid of Cassio entirely or drive Othello mad with jealousy. That evening, Othello leaves Cassio to guard the watch, urging him to keep a quiet guard as he retires to his chambers with Desdemona. Cassio asks Iago to keep him company. After the couple departs, Iago persuades Cassio to have a drink with him. Cassio protests but Iago convinces him that the rest of the soldiers crave a celebration. Cassio gives in and gets so drunk he can barely stand. As he stumbles away, Iago privately casts aspersions on Cassio’s weak constitution to a ranking officer, setting the stage for his downfall. A rich young man named Roderigo rages in anger at Iago when he learns that the woman he’s been pining for (and paying Iago to help him win), Desdemona, has just married Othello, a General who Iago reluctantly serves. Iago tells Roderigo that he hates Othello for promoting Michael Cassio to the rank of Lieutenant over him. Together, they go to the house of Desdemona’s father, Brabantio, to tell him that his daughter has been stolen by Othello. Not wanting his hatred of Othello to be known, Iago steals away before Brabantio sees him. Later, as Iago sits with Othello at his lodgings, Michael Cassio arrives with a message from the Duke informing Othello that he’s needed to help fend off an imminent attack by the Turkish fleet. Brabantio arrives at the Duke’s palace at the same time as Othello and publicly accuses him of stealing his daughter. Othello defends himself by speaking honestly of how he won Desdemona’s affection with tales of his adventures. Desdemona enters to defend her choice in marriage and tells her father before the Duke that her allegiance is to Othello. Holofernes and Nathaniel pontificate about linguistics over dinner until Armado arrives. Holofernes perks up when Armado describes his friendship with the King, who has asked Armado to present a “delightful performance” for them all to enjoy. Holofernes proposes that they present “The Nine Worthies” and assigns their parts, with Armado as Judas Maccabeus and Moth as Hercules. Back at the Princess’s tent, she and her girlfriends laugh in delight at the love letters and gifts the King and his pals have sent to woo them. Soon, Boyet arrives laughing at what he’s just seen: The King, Berowne, Longaville and Dumaine have put on disguises and plan to court the ladies as “Muscovites”. Nathaniel and Holofernes congratulate each other on their handling of Berowne’s letter and agree to use it as an example of bad writing. Back at Howard University’s Clark Hall, Berowne paces nervously, ruminating on his love for Rosaline. He hides when King Navarre enters, reading a love letter he wrote to the Princess out loud to himself. Navarre takes cover when Longaville enters and reads his own letter to Margaret, and Longaville hides when Dumaine enters to read the letter he’s writing to Maria. Soon, all four friends step forward to accuse each other of hypocrisy, with Berowne taking the lead in shaming the others. It all comes to a screeching halt when Jacquenetta enters with Berowne’s letter, which he desperately tries–and fails–to snatch back. In a rehearsal room at the Howard Conservatory of Music, Don Armado debates the nature of love with Moth before releasing Costard from bondage to deliver a love letter he wrote to Jacquenetta. Costard celebrates his payment and is about to set off on his errand when Berowne hires him to deliver a love letter he wrote to Rosaline. Off campus, the Princess and her entourage admire the king performing dressage on his horse as they prepare to hunt. Costard arrives to deliver Berowne’s letter to Rosaline but accidentally delivers Armado’s letter, which Boyet reads out loud to the delight of all the ladies as they set off on the deer hunt. Later, the scholars Nathaniel and Holofernes critique the deer hunt on a bus ride back to campus. Jaquenetta gets on board and asks Nathaniel to read the letter Costard delivered to her out loud because she cannot read it herself. Costard is put under the guard of Don Armado, who continues to dote on Jaquenetta. Meanwhile, the Princess, chauffeured by her Counsellor (Boyet) arrives on campus at Howard University in her Model T along with her Ladies-In-Waiting (Rosaline, Maria and Katharine). She sends Boyet to announce their arrival to the King of Navarre, who sends back word that he cannot house the Ladies under his roof but will provide shelter in a tent on campus, instead. The Princess is offended and demands that the King answer her father’s suit: that he return the land of Aquitaine to France. The King counters that her father has not paid him back the money he lent for her father’s war. The Princess accuses Navarre of lying and asks Boyet to provide proof of payment. Boyet says it will take another day for that proof to arrive. As they banter, Berowne tries to flirt with Rosaline, who turns him away. Dumaine and Longaville are smitten with Katharine and Maria, and ask Boyet for their names. He teasingly obliges. After the men depart, Boyet tells the Princess he believes the King is in love with her. She laughs it off as she strolls to their newly erected tent. The King of Navarre gathers together with his best friends (Longaville, Dumaine and Berowne) in the library at Howard University where he gets them to agree that they will devote themselves entirely to their studies without dating or indulging in food, drink or sleep for three full years. Berowne protests and reminds the King that the Princess of France is going to arrive soon to plead a case on behalf of her ailing father. The King promises to handle the situation and Berowne agrees to stick with his vow despite his reservations. They decide they’ll amuse themselves during their downtime by laughing at the antics of Don Adriano de Armado, a visiting scholar from Spain who is hilariously full of himself. Almost as soon as the King’s proclamation is issued, Sir Anthony Dull delivers a letter from Armado accusing Costard, a groundskeeper at Howard, of having an affair with Jaquenetta, a young lady who lives nearby. The King punishes Costard with a week of fasting on bread and water. Meanwhile, Armado confesses privately to his young friend and confidante, a Custodial Assistant named Moth, that he is painfully in love with Jaquenetta and vows to win her affections. Prospero releases Alonso, Sebastian, Antonia and Gonzala from their spell as he greets them, lovingly embracing Gonzala and chastising the others for their wicked deeds. Alonso begs forgiveness and is rewarded with the reunion of his son, who Prospero reveals with Miranda. As they all rejoice, the Boatswain returns and marvels at the restoration of Alonso’s ship and all their belongings. Prospero reassures them not to be alarmed and turns their attention to the approach of Trinculo, Stephano and Caliban who run into the company as they flee from Prospero’s dogs. The three apologize for their actions. Prospero forgives Caliban and promises the King’s company a safe return after a good night’s rest, during which he will tell them all his story. King Alonso grows increasingly despondent over the loss of his son, giving Antonia and Sebastian confidence that they will soon take power. They stumble upon a sumptuous feast presented by mysterious beings and waste no time gorging themselves before Ariel appears as a harpy and chastises Alonso, Sebastian and Antonia for their sinful acts, past and present. Elsewhere, Caliban encourages Stephano to carry out the murder of Prospero, which he vows to do until Trinculo stumbles upon the clothing and finery that Prospero and Ariel have laid as a trap to distract them. Caliban urges them to ignore the rich garments but Trinculo and Stephano get carried away with the luxury of the robes, gathering them greedily until Prospero unleashes his supernatural hounds to attack the conspirators and chase them into a frenzy. He revels in their misery and urges his dogs on in the attack but Ariel convinces him to ease his vengeance. At last, Prospero softens and vows to give up his magical powers once he performs his final act. King Alonso trudges through the rain-soaked island searching for any sign of his lost son. Gonzala does her best to comfort him over the derision of Antonia and Sebastian, who blame the King for his misfortunes and ridicule Gonzala’s optimistic idealism. Ariel arrives to cast a spell over Gonzala and Alonso, putting them to sleep under the guard of Sebastian and Antonia. Meanwhile, Caliban bristles at having to haul wood for Prospero until he hears the approach of Trinculo, the King’s jester, who he mistakes for one of Prospero’s demons. He hides under a cloak, which Trinculo discovers and uses as shelter from the rain. There, he finds Caliban, who he presumes from his stench is a strange mis-shapen creature from the island. Stephano, the King’s butler, drunk from the liquor that he found after the shipwreck, happens upon the pair and is joyfully reunited with Trinculo. Together, they get Caliban to drink liquor for the first time. In return, Caliban offers to be their devoted servant and renounces his loyalty to Prospero. Prospero orchestrates a meeting between his daughter, Miranda, and King Alonso’s son, Ferdinand, who is wandering the island in mourning for his father, who he presumes is dead. He is mesmerized by Ariel’s music and falls in love with Miranda the moment he sees her. Prospero confronts Ferdinand and saddles him with chores while he and Miranda visit Caliban, Sycorax’s son, who Prospero enslaved after he attempted to rape Miranda. Twelve years after having been deposed in a coup, Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, uses magical powers with the help of his spirit servant, Ariel, to shipwreck his enemies who are en route home from the wedding of the King of Naples’ (Alonso’s) daughter to the Prince of Tunis. Prospero’s daughter, Miranda, frets over the fate of the voyagers, but Prospero reassures her that they are unharmed before telling her the truth about their history: His sister, Antonia, conspired with Alonso to overthrow Prospero, putting him out to sea with Miranda in a rickety ship in the hope that they’d drown. Fortunately, a noble citizen named Gonzala secreted some clothing, food and water onto the ship, along with Prospero’s most prized books, by which he practiced magic. After Miranda falls asleep, Prospero beckons Ariel, who he commands to help him with more tasks now that the storm has ended. Ariel resists, but Prospero reminds the spirit that he freed it from slavery to the evil witch, Sycorax, who ruled the island until Prospero took over. After he threatens to re-enslave Ariel, the spirit relents and agrees to do Prospero’s bidding.
