The only glimmer of hope is the news that Buckingham’s army was dispersed by floods and he was taken prisoner. Richard tells Stanley to muster men but to leave behind his son, George, so he can be sure of Stanley’s loyalty. Stanley secretly sends word to Richmond that he will come to his aid once he secures his son’s safety. The Mayor arrives with Catesby and recoils in horror when Ratcliffe delivers Hastings’ head. In order to keep her own, she promises to tell the citizens that Hastings was a traitor who deserved to die. Once she leaves, Richard tells Buckingham to spread the word that King Edward was father to countless illegitimate children, including the two Princes. Later, Richard is planted as a guest on the Maximum Rock-n-Roll Radio Show to pose as a devout Christian and give the impression that he does not want to be King unless the people demand it. Buckingham stages a call into the show to plead with Richard to take the throne, saying that if he doesn’t, there will be rebellion. Richard pretends to be reluctant but eventually gives in. Later, outside The Tower parking garage, the Duchess, Elizabeth, Anne and Dorset assemble to visit the Princes, but Brackenbury refuses to let them in. Dorset flees to France to join forces with Richmond. Anne agrees to be crowned in order to save the Princes. Elizabeth goes to Sanctuary to save herself and the Duchess goes to her death. Richard tells him his uncles Rivers and Dorset were dangerous. Edward protests but is interrupted by the arrival of the Mayor of London who greets him with flattery. Hastings arrives and tells Edward his mother and brother are in sanctuary. Buckingham orders Hastings to bring York to them by force. The Cardinal protests but Buckingham convinces him there’s no need for sanctuary under these circumstances. Alone with his uncle Richard, Edward asks where he and his brother will be staying before their coronation. Richard tells him they’re to stay in the Tower. Edward protests but is interrupted by the arrival of his younger brother. Little York teases Richard until he learns they’re going to the Tower. He starts to argue but Edward tells him not to fear. They’re taken away. Richard and Buckingham call in Catesby to test Hastings’ loyalty. Once alone, Richard promises Buckingham the Earldom of Hereford. Later that night, a messenger from Stanley arrives at Barrington Hall to warn Hastings that Richard is going to kill him. Catesby arrives and hears from Hastings that he won’t support Richard taking the throne, even though he had his enemies (Rivers and Dorset) killed. Stanley rolls up and warns Hastings not to trust Richard. Buckingham saunters out to meet them and takes them to the Tower for the coronation. Elsewhere, in a warehouse basement in Pomfret, Rivers begs for his life as Ratcliffe drowns him. Inside the Tower, Clarence begs for his life. Later, at the Gilman DIY Music Venue, King Edward secures a reluctant peace between his family’s rival factions, but collapses in grief when Richard arrives with news of Clarence’s death. In the ensuing chaos, Richard secures the alliance of Buckingham and Ratcliffe. That night, Elizabeth and the Duchess grieve the deaths of Edward and Clarence. Richard enters to offer his condolences and Buckingham suggests a quiet coronation for the young prince Edward in order to avoid civil unrest. Meanwhile, Dorset and Rivers rush to secure the safety of Prince Edward in Ludlow. At Rasputin Records, citizens fret over being ruled by a child King with Richard as his Protector. At home with her younger son, the Prince of York, Elizabeth gets a tattoo as she ruminates with the Duchess over their horrible state of affairs. A messenger arrives with the news that Dorset and Rivers have been imprisoned in Pomfret by Richard and Buckingham. Elizabeth grabs York and withdraws in despair to sanctuary, leaving the Duchess behind. Queen Elizabeth replays a tape of her husband King Edward’s band as she obsesses over his failing health. Her brother, Lord Rivers, tries to comfort her, as do her two sons from a previous marriage, Gray and Dorset. She tells them that the sons she conceived with Edward are still too young to rule, and that if her husband dies, the throne will go to Richard until the oldest son comes of age, putting her safety in jeopardy. Buckingham and Derby arrive to report that King Edward’s health is improving and that he wants to make peace between Richard and Elizabeth's clans. Richard barges in with Hastings at his side, railing that he’s being disrespected and that people are telling lies about him. Elizabeth does her best to defend herself against his accusation that she put Clarence in jail and that she is vying for the throne. As they argue, the old Queen Margaret arrives unseen and listens to them from outside the house, commenting bitterly to herself about how quickly power is lost. She finally confronts the group and berates Richard for the murders of her family before cursing everyone in the room, one by one. After she departs, Catesby enters to say that King Edward wants to talk to his family. Richard, left alone, celebrates his mischief, then hires two murderers to kill his brother Clarence in the Tower. There, Clarence tells Brackenbury (the jailer) about a nightmare he had in which he drowned trying to rescue Richard and was dragged down to hell. Alcibiades leads his troops past Timon’s hideout in the wilderness, prompting a barrage of insults and mockery from the malcontent. But when Timon learns Alcibiades is planning to take over Athens, he gives him gold to support the campaign. Lucentio and Bianca hurry to meet the priest Biondello bribed to perform the marriage. Gremio greets Petruchio, Katherine, Grumio and the real Vincentio at Lucentio’s house, where they are met by the Merchant, who insists that he’s Lucentio’s father. Vincentio challenges him and chaos ensues as Tranio tries desperately to keep up the ruse. The newlyweds finally arrive and seeing no way out, they confess their gambit and beg forgiveness from their fathers. Once all is sorted out, Katherine confronts her father and forces him to reckon with his poor treatment of her. Later, the three newlywed couples (Katherine and Petruchio, Lucentio and Bianca, and Hortension and “The Widow”) celebrate their unions. Bianca and Lucentio are already off to a rocky start as they squabble over how much she’s allowed to eat. Hortensio realizes he may not live long as the widow’s fourth husband. Seeing he has no chance against Lucentio (AKA “Cambio”), Hortensio drops his “Licio” disguise and swears off women. Biondello, meanwhile, has found an old merchant who will pretend to be Lucentio’s father, Vincenzio, so that Lucentio can marry Bianca without getting his real father’s permission. Meanwhile, Katherine wakes in the comfort of Petruchio’s home and is further smitten as he describes the goings-on at his farm. Later, Baptista gets all rights to Vinzentio’s property from the man he thinks is Lucentio’s father but is really the old and very agreeable merchant. Hortensio goes to Petrucio’s house and is greeted by Grumio. As they rush to attend Bianca’s hasty marriage they’re interrupted by the arrival of an old gentleman who’s lost his way trying to find his son. It doesn’t take long for everyone to realize the gentleman is none other than Vincenzio, Lucentio’s real father. Katherine reluctantly goes to church to be married, only to learn through an elaborate pantomime performed by Grumio and Biondello that Petruchio is running late. Finally, a drunk priest arrives with Petruchio, who is dressed as a gondolier. They make a mockery of the wedding but a humiliated Katherine is nonetheless sent off with her new husband by her clueless father, who reminisces fondly about young love. The newlyweds eventually arrive at Petruchio’s frigid home in the pouring rain, where he tells her that he lives selflessly in poverty with seven penitents who share his bed and follow elaborate rituals before eating. Katherine nearly goes mad with hunger as Petruchio demands that they follow every step of the ritual before dining on the food delivered by the kitchen mistress, Dorcas. At last, Katherine realizes it’s all a joke and she devours her food with joy and laughter. Once sated, she tells Petruchio she’s going upstairs to get ready to lose her virginity to him, but Petruchio tells her he has no intention of making love to her until she is well rested and truly wants to be with him. It only makes Katherine more attracted to him, but Petruchio insists that she get a good night’s sleep as he privately confesses to feeling the rekindling of his long dormant passion. Petruchio negotiates with Baptista for Katherine’s hand until Licio emerges from his tutoring session bruised and battered. It only strengthens Petruchio’s resolve to woo Katherine and when she arrives, the two engage in a spirited match of wits. Katherine reluctantly agrees to go with Petruchio when he tells her that her father has agreed to marry her off to him. Gremio and Tranio (as Lucentio) immediately try to out-do each other in their bid for Bianca’s hand, with Baptista as auctioneer. Tranio wins the contest and is promised Bianca’s hand in marriage provided his father (Vincentio the tomato king) comes to the wedding in person. Tranio privately conspires to find a look-alike to pretend to be Vincentio. Meanwhile, Hortensio (still pretending to be Licio the Banjo Tutor) tries to woo Bianca with his instrument until Lucentio (as Cambio the Latin Tutor) interrupts and sends him away. Petruchio tells Hortensio he’s come to Padua to find a partner to give him renewed life after grieving the loss of his first wife. Hortensio tells him about Baptista’s daughter, Katherine, but warns him that she’s quite the shrew. Petruchio realizes he knows her father and is not put off. Hortensio agrees to provide an introduction if, in exchange, Petruchio presents him to Signior Baptista as a tutor for the object of his affection: Bianca. As they agree to the deal, Grumio announces the arrival of two other rivals vying for Bianca: Gremio and Lucentio, now disguised as Cambio. Hortensio introduces them to Petruchio and tells them of his intentions with Katherine, who once coupled will make Bianca available for marriage. Meanwhile, Katherine laments her isolation in her chamber at Baptista’s house. She impulsively frees her sister’s canaries from their cage to find the freedom she craves. When Bianca enters and sees what Katherine’s done, the two fight savagely until Signor Baptista arrives to break it up. He sends Bianca away and scolds Katherine, lamenting his struggles as a single father until he hears the arrival of Gremio, Grumio, Tranio (as Lucentio), Lucentio (as Cambio), Hortensio (as Licio) and Petruchio. Petruchio tells Baptista of his lineage and his desire to woo Katherine. Baptista says she’ll never agree but Petruchio persists, introducing Hortensio (as “Licio”), who he says will make inroads as her banjo tutor. The others go to great lengths to outdo each other as they compete for Bianca. Gremio presents a Latin tutor (Lucentio-as-Cambio) and Tranio-as-Lucentio claims to be the son of Vincentio, “the Tomato King”. Mistress Slapbottom clears the pub of all its rowdy revelers, leaving her alone with a woman who laments being tasked with ghost writing a sexist play about the taming of a shrew. She begins a page one rewrite, making the female protagonist, Katherine, a woman who loves learning and cannot stand being cooped up by the men who try to control her. We meet Lucentio and Tranio, who are visiting Padua. Strolling through the university, Lucentio is immediately smitten by Katherine’s sister, Bianca, an airhead who loves being in a man’s world. He conspires with Tranio to disguise himself as a tutor in order to gain access to Bianca by way of instruction. Meanwhile, Petruchio arrives in town with his trusty servant, Grumio, to visit his friends. They are greeted by Petruchio’s old pal, Hortensio. New York based not-for-profit theater company Houses on the Moon, and playwright Jeffrey Solomon creates acclaimed documentary plays. DE NOVO recounts the life and death of a Guatemalan teenager, Edgar Chocoy, who was deported after a failed asylum bid in the USA and murdered by the very group he testified would execute him were he to be returned to that country. With help of the NYC City Council, we were able to produce an audio adaptation of DE NOVO, which tells the story in three potent half hour episodes. They launched their podcast in 2021 and this new series, DE NOVO, tells Edgar’s heart-wrenching story through real-life court transcripts and interviews, shedding light on the plight of unaccompanied alien minors and the human rights issues they face.
