Wisconsin nudity ban: DNR throws a curveball
Wisconsin has historically lacked state anti-nudity laws, but recent legislative bills are causing concern among naturists. These bills aim to criminalize public nudity, particularly the World Naked Bike Ride, and restrict minors from events involving adult nudity. If passed, they could lead to Class A misdemeanor charges with fines of up to $10,000 and nine months in prison. Simultaneously, Wisconsin's Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has proposed rule amendments, partly related to the closure of Mazomanie Beach in 2016, that threaten to ban nudity on state lands. These changes, separate from the legislative bills, could essentially criminalize public nudity statewide. The combination of these legal shifts poses a significant challenge to naturists in the state. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/wisconsin-nudity-ban-dnr-throws-aWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/wisconsin-nudity-ban-dnr-throws-a-pod This is a public episode. 'Friends of Bates Beach' Avocado Fest booth removed after complaint
By any measure, Friday, October 6, was a very successful day for Friends of Bates Beach at its Avocado Festival booth in Carpinteria. Our new location in the high-traffic area brought us many visitors, almost all supportive and enthusiastic about our being there, and we collected nearly 300 names and emails through our raffle. Then came 7:30 a.m. the following morning. I was awoken by a phone call from the Festival director, informing me that she had received two complaints that we were “soliciting minors” by allowing them to spin our prize wheel. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/friends-of-bates-beach-avocado-festWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/friends-of-bates-beach-avocado-fest-pod This is a public episode. B.E.A.C.H.E.S moves closer to a public naturist library and museum near Haulover Beach Park
B.E.A.C.H.E.S. Foundation, the non-profit advocate for clothing-optional beaches throughout North America, is moving closer to its dream of establishing a public Naturist Museum, Library and Institute (MLI) near Haulover Beach Park on Miami Beach. At its quarterly Board of Governors meeting in September, B.E.A.C.H.E.S founder and Executive Director Shirley Mason informed that three possible sites had been identified. The potential sites are in North Miami Beach, North Miami and Sunny Isles Beach, all close to world-famous Haulover Beach, the more than 30-year-old clothing optional beach in Miami-Dade County. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/beaches-moves-closer-to-a-publicWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/beaches-moves-closer-to-a-public-pod This is a public episode. Unpacking new U.S. Forest Service proposals' potential impact on naturism
The U.S. Forest Service, under the Department of Agriculture, has unveiled a new proposal aimed at revising its criminal prohibitions, and they are currently seeking comment from the public. At first glance, the core intent of these modifications appears to be the containment of aggressive and illicit behaviors on Forest lands. In the nuanced language of the proposal, nudity or nudism is not explicitly addressed. However, there are broad terminologies and ambiguous phrases in the rules that warrant the attention of the naturist community. In navigating through this bureaucratic tapestry, I bring forth my personal interpretation—cultivated from a personal perspective and admittedly with a modest expertise in the labyrinth of legislative language. This article aspires to unfold the layers of the proposal, striving to spotlight areas that may ripple into the realms of naturist expressions and freedoms. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/unpacking-new-us-forest-service-proposalsWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/unpacking-new-us-forest-service-proposals-pod This is a public episode. Double standards in dairyland
The 13th annual ride in Madison was, by all measures, a success. Over the years, the city has seen all kinds of participants—first-timers, recurring attendees, local advocates, and families. Among the nearly 200 who participated this year was a young girl no older than ten and her mother. The mother saw it as an opportunity to teach her daughter valuable lessons—not just about body positivity but also self-empowerment, giving her the option to dress however she chose. The young girl chose to participate nude just like everyone else, a choice respected and supported by her mother and, indeed, aligned with the event’s clothing-optional policy. Yet the girl's presence, entirely unremarkable in the international scope of World Naked Bike Rides, has nonetheless ignited a moralistic media controversy that has escalated to the national level. In the latest development of the continuing saga, proposed measures now aim to redefine public decency laws in Wisconsin, sparking a national debate that could alter the course of body freedom in the state and jeopardize naturist events like this one going forward. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/double-standards-in-dairylandWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/double-standards-in-dairyland-pod This is a public episode. Preserving Canadian naturist history
For almost four decades—ever since it was founded back in 1986—the Federation of Canadian Naturists has been accumulating all manner of documents, magazines, photos, videos, and other material detailing the development of naturism in Canada. It’s all been sitting in a trailer in Ontario, preserved, but not very accessible to researchers studying the history of naturism and nudism. That may soon change, however, now that the FCN Research Library (FCNRL) is joining the Nudist Research Library Consortium, a collaborative effort that ties together a number of similar repositories around North America. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/preserving-canadian-naturist-historyWebpage for this episode: https://www.planetnude.co/p/preserving-canadian-naturist-history-pod This is a public episode. Andrew Martinez and the nude microclimate
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.planetnude.coThe cover of Nude & Natural issue 12.2 features a photograph of Debbie Moore, Nina Schilling, and Marty Kent of The X-Plicit Players interactive performance art group, gathered on the steps of Sproul Plaza at the University of California Berkeley. With them, Andrew Martinez, who had recently attracted international media attention for his decision to attend classes while entirely nude. The cover photo was captioned, “The Naked Guy—A New Micro-Culture?”1Andrew Martinez’s nude activism began several years before he arrived in Berkeley. According to a 2006 article in the New York Times, in the summer of 1990, at seventeen, Martinez had “fallen under the nonconformist spell of Henry David Thoreau” and began questioning the rationality of having to wear clothing in 90-degree weather. After requesting the permission of several neighbors in his Cupertino, California hometown, Martinez walked down Highway 9 “wearing nothing and carrying a sign that read, ‘I was born naked and so were you.’”2 He was quickly arrested, but his nude protests did not end. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/andrew-martinez-and-the-nude-microclimate

A sexless* paradise
The tension between sexual and non-sexual nudity has long been a point of contention in nudist communities. Historically, figures like Maurice Parmelee and Jan Gay promoted sexual openness within nudism, while some club owners eschewed it to maintain respectability. This dual relationship mirrors society's broader struggle to differentiate between sexual and non-sexual nudity, often exacerbated by sexual repression. Achieving body liberation demands acknowledging both sexual and non-sexual expressions as interwoven aspects of human existence. Ignoring one aspect for the sake of the other will continue to perpetuate shame, confusion, and stigma around the human body. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/a-sexless-paradise This is a public episode. Clothed in a cause
In 2023, online naturist advocacy appears somewhat monotonous, following certain well-trodden paths. Digital platforms feature familiar nudists participating in the mundane, sometimes picturesque activities of daily life, always in the buff, as part of an earnest attempt to "normalize" naturism. This simple exposure seeks to counteract the overwhelming excess of sexualized nudity portrayed in mainstream media and porn. It's akin to a naked David, armed only with a sling to confront the Goliathan presence of entrenched cultural taboos. Often the tweets, photos, and blog posts that circulate, intended as an act of defiance, are drowned out in the noise of a world that seems irreversibly tethered to its textiles. While I'm no stranger to this form of advocacy, and even partake in it myself, I'm compelled to ask: Are we missing the mark on effectively normalizing nudism? 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/clothed-in-a-cause This is a public episode. Reverend Braxton Sawyer: The crusading anti-nudist of Arkansas
Picking himself up from the dirt, his crumpled hat in one hand and a movie camera in the other, the Reverend Braxton Sawyer turned and looked back at the nudists who'd blocked his mad-dash attempt to invade the Sunshine Gardens resort. Sawyer's anti-nudism crusade, which began in the 1950s, led to confrontations with nudist organizations and even prompted the only anti-nudism law in the U.S., still on Arkansas' books. Despite failing to gain traction in the broader religious community and lacking empirical evidence to support his claims, Sawyer's controversial legacy continues to hover like a cloud over the nudist community and American civil liberties. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/reverend-braxton-sawyer-the-crusading This is a public episode. Ring reverberates
Ninety years ago this week, the quiet of Swan Creek was shattered by the sound of boots and the clatter of camera shutters as a posse of deputies led by Sheriff Fred Miller descended on the Sun Sports League of Kalamazoo, Michigan. The fledgling nudist camp, run by a local dance instructor named Fred C. Ring and his wife, Ophelia, was spied on by authorities after a neighbor of the property, a social worker named Mary Angier, filed an official complaint against the nudists. The raid set the stage for Fred and Ophelia Ring to become the first individuals successfully prosecuted for nudism in the U.S., laying the groundwork for future battles over body freedom and personal liberties. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/ring-reverberates This is a public episode. Over the lake’s most recent 90 years, the nudists from Lake O’ The Woods Club have faced societal shifts, legal challenges, and community skepticism. Despite this, the club’s mission—offering a sanctuary for those seeking a life closer to nature—remains unchanged. ‘Running Around Naked’ book review
Running Around Naked is not your everyday memoir. It is a true story that entices the reader to peek over the fence into the life of a girl whose normality was found within the confines of a nudist camp. Jelaine Lombardi takes readers along through her upbringing in the Seminole Health Club, a nudist camp owned by her parents. For those not accustomed to the sometimes insular culture of social nudism, it might feel like a nostalgic look at another world. The intellectual rebel
One could argue that the American naturist movement reached its intellectual crescendo in the 1980s and early 1990s under the leadership of Lee Baxandall. While nudist magazines had largely dissolved into soft core pornography in the late 1960s and indeed throughout the 1970s, and many nudist parks had begun to embrace more subversive (and profitable) activities – nude pageants, lingerie dances, and swinging – Baxandall sought to reconnect the movement to a larger purpose, intertwined with feminism, environmentalism, intellectualism, and social justice, informed by his decades of work as a writer and political activist. 🪐Read the original article: https://www.planetnude.co/p/the-intellectual-rebel This is a public episode. A history of nudism in Tennessee
The history of organized nudism and naturism in Tennessee began much earlier than one might imagine. Nudists familiar with the state can likely identify Tennessee’s trio of lodges: Timberline Lodge (1964 to 2003), Rock Haven Lodge (1969 to present), and Cherokee Lodge (1993-2014). But several nudist groups, some with unimproved camping areas, were operating in the state long before Timberline opened. This three-part written history, the first of its kind to our knowledge, explores the under-appreciated realm of Tennessee nudism, and uncovers the pioneering figures and significant groups that have decisively influenced the national nudism narrative, shedding new light on an often-overlooked aspect of American social history. 🪐Read the original articles:Part 1 - “They were made of stern stuff, fired with determination”Part 2 - “All those Tennessee people will be heroes”Part 3 - “The good old summertime is almost over” This is a public episode. The bare essentials of home nudism
The COVID-19 pandemic ushered in an unexpected shift in societal habits, one of which was a surge in the practice of home nudism, or domestic naturism. In the 1950s and 1960s, the beach was a popular destination for members of the LGBTQ community, who faced discrimination and harassment at other beaches. Skinny dipping for a good cause
We learn about the history of International Skinny Dip Day and one group who is actively promoting the event through SkinnyDipDay.org. The holiday, celebrated in July, aims to encourage body positivity and self-acceptance by inviting individuals to participate in skinny-dipping experiences. The event has evolved from a National Nude Weekend in 1976 to a seven-day Nude Recreation Week and eventually International Skinny Dip Day. Thomas Francine, inspired by his own transformative journey, created SkinnyDipDay.org to raise funds for the Fistula Foundation while promoting body positivity. The organization facilitates group skinny dips and donations to support life-transforming surgeries for women suffering from obstetric fistula. 🪐Read the original article:https://www.planetnude.co/p/skinny-dipping-for-a-good-causeWe hope you’re enjoying Planet Nude. The nudity of the 400 Pueblos
This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.planetnude.coIn 1970, the 400 Pueblos movement was born in Veracruz, Mexico, when a diverse group of 1,000 peasants from various indigenous communities and political parties embarked on a march from Coatepec to Mexico City, demanding the restoration of their unjustly taken land rights by the government. However, their march was abruptly halted by the military in Tlaxcala, resulting in the arrest of organizers on questionable charges, and their 19 day detention. The injustice galvanized the movement, which was officially established in Veracruz upon their release, led in large part by organizer César del Ángel Fuentes. The 400 Pueblos movement found its roots in the historic 1970 march, and for fifty years, this politically active collective of indigenous communities in Veracruz has not only protested the government's neglect and exploitation of their land and resources, but has done so with the striking and controversial tactic of protesting nude. But the 400 Pueblos movement didn’t always embrace nudity in their approach to activism. That developed out of desperation, emerging as a winning tactic that would garner global attention to the group’s broader message, and ultimately inspire copycat protests by other activist groups looking to replicate their success.Over the decades, their struggle has been met with harassment, imprisonment, and political retaliation. But as their leaders faced arrest warrants and their movement has suffered losses, the fate of the 400 Pueblos movement today hangs in the balance. 🪐Read the original article at https://www.planetnude.co/p/the-nudity-of-the-400-pueblos

When all you have is a hammer
Virtually all American feature films with nudist storylines, from the 1930s to the present (with the possible exception of 1933’s This Nude World, written by lesbian author and upstate New York nudist retreat owner Jan Gay), have been “nudie cutie” exploitation films, primarily appealing to the desires of a heterosexual male audience. These films suggest that nudist camps are overflowing with nubile young women who welcome our gaze as they slather on sunscreen and slap around volleyballs. Although contemporary American filmmakers continue to approach the topic of social nudity as a novelty or punchline, there are several exceptional international films that casually feature naturist characters or spaces in their stories. Director Tim Mielants’ 2019 film De Patrick is such a film. Currently available to view on Alamo’s streaming service, it might well be one of the most engaging films about naturists ever produced. 🪐Read the original article at https://www.planetnude.co/p/when-all-you-have-is-a-hammer This is a public episode. A brief history of naturism in fiction
Some might say that naturism in fiction starts with Adam and Eve (and many more biblical episodes of nudity), or with the myths of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Centuries later, nudity was not all that uncommon in the literature of medieval Europe, often with euphemisms such as “dressed the way she was born.” But the beginnings of something akin to a naturist lifestyle portrayed in fiction can be traced back to a couple of turn-of-the-twentieth-century writers, Rudyard Kipling and Edgar Rice Burroughs. 🪐Read the original article at https://www.planetnude.co/p/a-brief-history-of-naturism-in-fiction This is a public episode. Playing the unplayable: From 'Barely Proper' to 'Disrobed'
When Tom Cushing first had his play Barely Proper published in 1931, the playwright already understood that his one act’s ability to be actualized in a live theater setting would be severely limited, leading him to subtitle it “an unplayable play.” However, the play would prove playable after all. As it would turn out, it would be actual nudists, not your typical theatre elites, who would find a niche for the unplayable play, and who would ultimately be responsible for its longevity as a cult classic for more than 90 years (and counting). 🪐Read the original article at https://www.planetnude.co/p/playing-the-unplayable-from-barely This is a public episode. Nudism with more
A review of the film "Loin Des Yeux" directed by Nicolas Poirier. The film is a documentary project on naturism, focusing on the oldest naturist campground in Europe, CHM Montalivet in France. It explores the values and perspectives of naturists of different ages and backgrounds, highlighting the generational appeal of the naturist community. The podcast emphasizes that naturism goes beyond nudity, emphasizing respect for nature, peacefulness, and others. The film is praised for its authentic portrayal of the naturist community and serves as an introduction to the naturist idea for those unfamiliar with it. 🪐Read the original article at https://www.planetnude.co/p/nudism-with-more This is a public episode. The transformative activism of WNBR
What makes the WNBR particularly remarkable in terms of environmental activism is that it is generally embraced by the people and governments of the cities in which the rides take place. The ride attracts people of all ages, genders, and backgrounds, and it has become a widely celebrated event in many cities around the world. Many of the participants are not necessarily activists at all, but rather see the event as something of a bucket list item or a chance to experience what it’s like to go naked in public. Despite its approachability as a public event (or perhaps irrelevant to it), the fact is that WNBR is a radical form of protest, rooted in guerrilla activism. 🪐Read the original article at www.planetnude.co This is a public episode.
