Value Investing with an ESG Focus with Filip Erhardt, Founder and CEO of ESGFIRE
My guest on the show today is Filip Erhardt, Founder and CEO of ESGFIRE. I was introduced to Filip by Paul Andreola from Small Cap Discoveries (thank you, Paul) a few months ago, and we had a phenomenal conversation about his ESG strategy and his approach to investing in environmentally-friendly companies. In the Summer 2023 issue of the Planet MicroCap Review, Filip contributed an article titled, ”ESG Investing 101,” documenting his investing process, and invited him on the podcast to dive deeper into ESG, Cleantech, Agrotech and why ESG is still a megatrend that investors shouldn’t ignore. For more information about ESGFIRE, please visit: https://esgfire.com/en/Watch on YouTube:SAVE THE DATE, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS will be April 30 - May 2, 2024. Shelly Group (Frankfurt: SLYG): Smart Home Products for the DIY Community
My guest on the show today is Wolfgang Kirsch, Co-CEO of Shelly Group (SLYG.F). Shelly Group is an asset-light European smart home device designer, manufacturer, and distributor that has developed a smart home platform under the Shelly brand. The company specializes in the design, production, and distribution of smart, innovative, open-architecture, high-quality IoT home products (Smart Home). Its main business is a growing line of products under the brand “Shelly."I was introduced to the Shelly Group by a good friend and colleague, Adi Soglowek, thank you Adi, and had the pleasure of seeing Co-CEO, Wolfgang Kirsch, present the company at Ian Cassel's MicroCapClub Leadership Summit. At the time, I thought to myself, interesting presentation, but didn't quite understand how the "Shelly", Shelly Group's smart home product, was unique and different amongst the swath of smart home products we have here in the states. This is the reason I love this show because Wolfgang cleared up my confusion real quick, and we dove deep into how and why the Shelly Group chose this pathway for the products themselves and ultimately marketing to the DIY (do it yourself) community. We also discuss: Marketing strategy to break into the US market and how the company hopes to achieve its goal of $200M in revenues by 2026.With that, please enjoy my conversation with Wolfgang Kirsch, Co-CEO of Shelly Group. Quantitative MicroCap Investing with "GUTS" with Ryan Telford @Rtelford_invest
My guest on the show today is Ryan Telford, Private Investor and better known as @Rtelford_invest on Twitter/X. We've been following each other for a while, and after having the chance to meet Ryan, during lunch at SmallCap Discoveries event in Vancouver, and learning a little bit about MicroCap quant strategy, I invited him on to share his strategy. The format for this interview is a little different - Ryan put together a great presentation called, "Quantitative MicroCap Investing with 'GUTS'", and I wanted him to run with it. Also, the video version of today's pod, which is up on the Planet MicroCap YouTube Channel, has a visual of the presentation. It's very informative, and in my opinion, Ryan does a phenomenal job showcasing a strategy that, who knows, could work for you when developing your MicroCap investing philosophy. You can Follow Ryan Telford on Twitter/X @Rtelford_invest: https://twitter.com/RTelford_investWatch on YouTube:SAVE THE DATE, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS will be April 30 - May 2, 2024. Vox Royalty (TSX: VOXR) (NASDAQ: VOXR): Value Play in the Mining Royalty Space
My guest on the show today is Kyle Floyd, Chairman and CEO of Vox Royalty Corp. (TSX: VOXR) (NASDAQ: VOXR). Vox is a returns focused mining royalty company with a portfolio of over 60 royalties and streams spanning eight jurisdictions. The Company was established in 2014 and has since built unique intellectual property, a technically focused transactional team and a global sourcing network which has allowed Vox to target the highest returns on royalty acquisitions in the mining royalty sector. Since the beginning of 2020, Vox has announced over 25 separate transactions to acquire over 50 royalties.Investing is difficult, investing in junior mining companies, in my opinion, like biotech, is extremely hard. Picking the right companies comes down to understanding a multitude of factors that requires some expertise in geology (or biology). For the mining industry, the royalty and streaming provides a different vehicle for exposure to the space, and that's why I invited Kyle on to better understand the royalty and streaming business. For more information about Vox Royalty, please visit: https://voxroyalty.com/Watch on YouTube:This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. The Case for Japanese MicroCaps with David Baeckelandt, Head of Client Relations at SuMi TRUST
My guest on the show today is David Baeckelandt, Head of Client Relations SuMi TRUST - the U.S. arm for Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, Inc. Dave reached out to me about a month ago to see if I had an interest in doing an episode about Japanese MicroCaps. I got this email as I was getting geared up for our conference in Vancouver, our first event outside the U.S., which is some fun irony considering our audience is continuing to look globally for quality opportunities. I said yes to Dave, he sent me some great materials making the case for Japanese MicroCaps, and I’m excited to share our conversation all about it.For more information about Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Asset Management, Inc., please visit: https://www.sumitrust-am.com/Watch on YouTube:SAVE THE DATE, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS will be April 30 - May 2, 2024. UGE International (TSX-V: UGE) (OTCQB: UGEIF): Develops Midscale Solar and Energy Storage Project
My guest on the show today is Nick Blitterswyk, CEO of UGE International Ltd. (TSXV: UGE) (OTCQB: UGEIF). UGE develops, owns, and operates commercial and community solar and battery storage projects. Their distributed energy solutions deliver cheaper, cleaner energy to businesses and consumers with no upfront cost, and with over 500MW of global experience, they are working daily to power a more sustainable world, according to the company's website.UGE recently presented at the MicroCapClub Leadership Summit, a phenomenal event by the way, where CEO, Nick Blitterswyk, did a presentation and Q&A with an investor friend of mine, Jeff Kowal. It was a packed room with some of the best MicroCap investors in the game, and Nick did a great job, which by my definition means clearly describing what the company does, prospects for future growth, addressing potential risks that could impede that growth, and vision for the company.I first interviewed Nick in November 2016 (that's about 7 years ago now), and have done six short-form interviews with him since then. I invited him on this podcast as a showcase of how companies evolve, how difficult it can be to refine a company's message despite thinking it's simple, and the importance of recognizing the need to change your business strategy. Furthermore, we also discuss:* UGE's pivot to "Full Life Cycle" approach to developing and owning community solar projects* The company's backlog and typical project sizes* And, of course, Nick's vision for the companyFor more information about UGE International, please visit: https://ugei.com/Watch on YouTube:This podcast was recorded and is being made available by SNN, Inc. BioSyent (TSX-V: RX): Specialty Pharmaceutical Company Focused on Commercializing Assets in Canada
My guest on the show today is Rene Goehrum, President, CEO and Chairman of BioSyent (TSX-V: RX). BioSyent is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on commercializing products that the company says provides a distinguishable benefit to patients and their healthcare providers and, according to their website, is known for their ability to effectively and efficiently introduce new products to the Canadian market. BioSyent is, as the company states on their website, actively sought out as the Canadian market partner of choice by brand innovators with niche or specialty products looking for a trusted partner. The first time we interviewed Rene was back in June 2013. At the beginning of June 2013, the stock was trading around $1.30, and as of recording of this introduction, the morning of September 15, 2023, the stock closed at $7.85. Furthermore, as of Q2 2023, the company has reported 52 consecutive profitable quarters, according to their Q2 2023 results presentation. Many of you listening know the BioSyent story well, and yet despite the company's performance during Rene's tenure, I think some of you would agree that BioSyent is the most well-known unknown company. I thought it was time for folks that don't know the company's history and where they were going to have Rene on the show to chat about all of that, plus:* Capital allocation discipline and approach* Criteria for in-licensing new products, and;* Rene's "promised land" / long-term vision for BioSyentWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Rene Goehrum, President, CEO and Chairman of BioSyent. What the Data Says the Market Hates Right Now + One Semi-Bold Prediction with Tobias Carlisle, Founder and Managing Director of Acquirers Funds and Co-Host, Value After Hours
My guest on the show today is Tobias Carlisle, Founder and Managing Director of Acquirers Funds and Co-Host, Value After Hours. It’s been well over a year since we’ve had Toby on the show, and I invited him back for his annual appearance. I feel like a broken record on the pod recently - we’ve talked a lot about how MicroCaps are in the doldrums (that’s putting it nicely), redemptions + no inflows, Small/Micro strategies can’t raise new capital, etc... We haven’t really talked about the quantitative reason (looking at the data) for why the confluence of all the events are happening. Toby is data king, and he does not disappoint in providing his perspective on what the data is telling us, including one semi-bold prediction about the big ”R”-word (recession). For more information about the Acquirers Funds, please visit: https://acquirersfunds.com/You can Follow Tobias Carlisle on Twitter/X @Greenbakd: https://twitter.com/GreenbackdYou can Watch the Value After Hours Podcast on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/@UCJ27FwJZ3hsMrPCviG5gCFgWatch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. The MicroCap Double Whammy: Poor Stock Performance + No Allocation = Opportunity with Jonathan Boyar, President of Boyar Research
My guest on the show today is Jonathan Boyar, President of Boyar Research. I recently saw Jonathan as a guest on the Value After Hours podcast with Tobias Carlisle and Jake Taylor, and invited him on to get his perspective on the markets in 2023, as well as his take on MicroCap performance. As the title states, we’ve been experiencing a double whammy in MicroCaps: poor stock performance over the last two years and allocators are not distributing funds to MicroCap strategists. We talk at length about why this environment is fertile ground for MicroCap investors that know what they are doing. Jonathan and I also talk about his latest venture: the Boyar Research substack, where you can actually get Jonathan’s latest MicroCap picks as a subscriber - the link to the Boyar Research substack is in the show notes.Subscribe to the Boyar Research Substack here: https://boyarresearch.substack.com/You can Follow Boyar Value Group on Twitter/X here: https://twitter.com/BoyarValueWatch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. VANCOUVER Presenting Company Breakdown with Paul Andreola, Founder and Editor of SmallCap Discoveries
My guest on the show today is Paul Andreola, Founder and Editor of SmallCap Discoveries. Paul had a great idea in advance of the conference that we do a short breakdown of all the Presenting Companies currently listed (all subject to change) to participate in the event. I like to be very collaborative when putting together our events and what companies folks would be interested in seeing, and that was especially the case for our first event up in Vancouver - Paul and his team were integral to that process. We just opened our 1x1 meeting platform this week for participants to start requesting meetings with CEOs, and so we thought it would be cool to share some quick insights to get you fired up to participate in the event - it’s not too late to register by the way: planetmicrocapshowcase.com.Register to attend for the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/signupPresenting Company List for the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/components/30404For more information about Paul Andreola and SmallCap Discoveries, please visit: https://smallcapdiscoveries.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Interviewing Company CEOs: The Must-Ask Question Checklist Every Investor Needs with Gary Mishuris, Managing Partner and CIO at Silver Ring Value Partners
My guest on the show today is Gary Mishuris, Managing Partner and CIO at Silver Ring Value Partners. As I've mentioned on every show leading up, we have our conference, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VANCOUVER coming up on September 6-7, 2023 (planetmicrocapshowcase.com for more information), and it is a great opportunity for attendees to meet with MicroCap management teams and ask them questions. We've covered this topic often here on the show, but: 1. We haven't in a while, and 2. Gary's article, same as today's episode title, I think provides a solid framework/check list of questions that every investor could refer to when thinking about what they want to speak with management about. My biggest takeaway that stuck with me is asking yourself the following: "what are you trying to accomplish" in your interaction with management. I think most folks go into these conversations and their goal is thinking they can get CEOs to give them information that's either borderline or non-public altogether. Most management teams are wise to those tricks and will lose respect for you as an investor because they get the game you're trying to play. But asking yourself "what are you trying to accomplish", perhaps trying to build a relationship with the CEO or getting a feel of the CEOs values, and then constructing questions around that, I think can help you immensely with getting the results you're hoping for. There's even more quality insight from Gary, so hopefully you'll see its not just another "How To" talk to management episode.Gary Mishuris' article on Stubstack: https://behavioralvalueinvestor.substack.com/p/interviewing-company-ceos-the-mustFor more information about Silver Ring Value Partners, please visit: https://silverringvaluepartners.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Why/Why Not Invest in Illiquid MicroCap Stocks + $OTCM $CSU.TO $AEP.V $GLXZ with Simon Handrahan, Editor of Margin of Safety Investing Newsletter
My guest on the show today is Simon Handrahan, Editor of the Margin of Safety Newsletter. He recently shared a Tweet (or a post now, an ”X”, I don’t know), where he asked his audience: ”Individual investors: why don’t you invest in illiquid microcaps?” When you deal with MicroCaps, there’s a good chance you’ll come across a company you might like that meets all your criteria, and it barely trades. This is not news to most of you, but I thought the question that Simon posted on Twitter/X got me thinking: how illiquid is too illiquid? Is the lack of liquidity THE edge when investing in MicroCap stocks? So, I invited on Simon to chat further about all of this plus his theses on stocks currently in his portfolio: Constellation Software CSU, OTC Markets OTCM, Atlas Engineered AEP on the Venture and Galaxy Gaming GLXZ.For more information about the Margin of Safety Newsletter on Substack, please visit: https://www.marginofsafetyinvesting.com/You can Follow Simon Handrahan on Twitter @MoS_Investing: https://twitter.com/MoS_InvestingWatch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. How to Identify Multibagger Stocks with Paul @Investmentideen
My guest on the show today is Paul, a small and microcap investor better known by his Twitter handle @Investmentideen. We’ve been going back and forth on doing an interview for a while, and he recently published a thread on how Paul Andreola and Brandon Mackie’s investing framework, ”Small Cap Discovery”, has impacted his investing process. The thread is in the show notes by the way. Paul and Brandon are great friends of Planet MicroCap, and the presentation they did on this framework back in 2016, I was in the room for that, not to mention the many times both of them have been on the podcast. So, I thought it was really cool that Paul found this framework and his been able to extrapolate from there a Small/MicroCap strategy that works for him. We talk about the framework, how Paul implements it and some examples of investments he’s made where he’s benefitted, as well as made mistakes. You can Follow Paul on Twitter @Investmentideen: https://twitter.com/InvestmentideenTwitter thread "How to Identify Multibagger Stocks": https://twitter.com/Investmentideen/status/1680506750485819397Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. My guest on the show today is Phil Richards, CFO of Corero Network Security plc (AIM: CNS). Corero Network Security is a leading provider of distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection solutions, specializing in automatic detection and protection solutions that includes network visibility, analytics, and reporting tools. Corero's technology provides scalable protection capabilities against both external DDoS attackers and internal DDoS threats, in even the most complex edge and subscriber environments, ensuring internet service availability and uptime.According to Corero's annual DDoS Threat Intelligence Report they recently published, there has been a 300% increase in carpet bomb attacks in 2022 compared to 2021, over seven times as many Mirai-like DDoS attacks in 2022 than in 2021 and twice as many DDoS attacks targeting DNS (Domain Name System) services in 2022 than in 2020. Needless to say, the need for cyber security solutions is on the rise, and I wanted to better understand how Corero is addressing these industry tailwinds, as well as:* How Corero's DDoS protection solutions are unique and different compared to their peers* Nature of their partnerships with firms like Juniper Networks, which owns 9.9% of Corero* From a corporate perspective, being a publicly-traded MicroCap on the AIM exchange* Recent financial performance and executive management shake-up; and,* Corero's 3-5 year vision for the company and the inflection points that will get them thereWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Phil Richards, CFO of Corero Network Security. Mining Narratives for 2023, Top 5% Junior Mining Stock Criteria, Royalties and Streamers with Rick Rule, Investor, Speculator and Founder of Rule Investment Media
My guest on the show today is Rick Rule, Investor, Speculator and Founder of Rule Investment Media. I haven't had Rick on the show since September 2021 - during that time we've seen gold tap $2,000 an ounce and remain just below, lithium craze and much more. I invited Rick on the show to hear what metals and mining narratives he's been paying attention to in the last 6-12 months and for the next 6-12 months. Rick also does a deep dive on the three reasons why there has been a junior mining MicroCap malaise, his criteria for finding the top 5% junior mining stocks, as well as his thoughts on royalty and streaming companies. POSaBIT (CSE: PBIT) (OTCQX: POSAF): Payments Infrastructure Provider for the Cannabis Industry
My guest on the show today is Ryan Hamlin, Co-Founder and CEO of POSaBIT Systems Corporation (CSE: PBIT) (OTCQX: POSAF). POSaBIT is a financial technology company that delivers payment processing and point-of-sale systems for cash-only businesses. POSaBIT specializes in resolving pain points for complex, high-risk, emerging industries like cannabis with an all-in-one solution that is compliant, user-friendly and utilizes top-of-the-line hardware.Let's start by saying that the Cannabis industry has been getting, for lack of a better term, wrecked in the last two years. Almost every sector index and indicator, and publicly-traded cannabis company issuer performance are down. Even when we think that some companies are making progress, they've probably announced not-so-great earnings within the last quarter or two.Despite the nuclear winter we're seeing in Cannabis right now (and for the last couple years now), if we're looking at the big picture, whether cannabis is legalized or not, it's without a doubt not going anywhere. I think we can all agree with that premise. And if so, I wanted to have on a "picks and shovels"-type company to better understand how they are working through the current Cannabis climate, as well as their perspective on the industry as a whole. That's where today's guest, Ryan Hamlin from POSaBIT enters the chat. We had a great conversation what's happening in the Cannabis industry, as well as:* Legalization debate within the industry* The importance of having a payments infrastructure as a Cannabis retailer* POSaBIT's capital allocation strategy, specifically in regards to M&A, and;* Ryan's vision for the company in 3-5 yearsWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Ryan Hamlin, Co-Founder and CEO of POSaBIT Systems Corporation. Mid-Year 2023 MicroCap Review with Andrew Walker (Yet Another Value Podcast) Jason Hirschman (Hudson 215 Capital) Maj Soueidan (GeoInvesting)
I got a full panel today for this episode: Andrew Walker, Host of the Yet Another Value Podcast, Jason Hirschman, Managing Director of Hudson 215 Capital and Maj Soueidan, Founder of GeoInvesting.com. Last year when we did the mid-year review, we all needed a nice glass of whiskey to drown our sorrows in the bloodbath of 2022 for MicroCaps. 2023 has been slightly kinder - all major indices have been up on the year and as per usual, Small / MicroCaps have lagged. The Russell Rebalance Effect with Paul Dwyer, Director of Research at Punch & Associates
My guest on the show today is Paul Dwyer, Director of Research at Punch & Associates. I recently had Paul's colleague, Howard Punch on the show, and after recording, Howard asked if we had ever done anything on the Russell Rebalance. After spending minutes in the deep Planet MicroCap podcast archives, it turns out, we hadn't! So, I acted on Howard's suggestion and invited his Director of Research to talk about it. We recorded this interview on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, and the Russell Rebalance officially takes effect on Monday, June 26, 2023 - timing couldn't be better on this one.For more information about Punch & Associates, please visit: https://punchinvest.com/To register and attend, please visit: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Utilizing CHAOS Formula to Find MicroCap Disruptors with Chris Wood, Chief Investment Officer of RiskHedge
My guest on the show today is Chris Wood, Chief Investment Officer of RiskHedge. Founded in 2018, Chris and his team at RiskHedge run a newsletter helping subscribers anticipate and profit from the biggest disruptive trends shaping our world. They look at opportunities everywhere, but Chris has an affinity for MicroCaps, where he can deploy his own proprietary CHAOS formula to find disruptive companies within the MicroCap ranks. In our conversation today, Chris shares what his ”CHAOS Formula” is (which stands for Change, Hype, Acceleration, Ownership and Size) and applies that formula for a few investment ideas he’s looking at. Chris also recently attended our conference, the Planet MicroCap Showcase in Las Vegas, as well as LD Micro, where at both, he did a ton of meetings with management teams - so, I wanted to get his take on the message he’s getting from CEOs.For more information about RiskHedge, please visit: https://www.riskhedge.com/To register and attend, please visit: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED): GMO Corn Seeds in China
My guest on the show today is Joe Ramelli, Vice President of Business Development for Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED). Origin Agritech Limited, founded in 1997 and headquartered in Zhong-Guan-Cun (ZGC) Life Science Park in Beijing, is a Chinese agricultural technology company. In crop seed biotechnologies, Origin Agritech's phytase corn was the first transgenic corn to receive the Bio-Safety Certificate from China's Ministry of Agriculture, according to the company's website.Three things to get you ready for this interview:1. I've been wanting to have a US-listed Chinese company on the podcast. US-listed Chinese companies have had a negative perception for a while now in general, and especially amongst US MicroCap investors. Out of curiosity, I wanted to chat with a US-listed Chinese company to better understand how they feel about this and approach investors with a certain narrative, without knowing anything specific about their company.2. I wanted to interview a US-listed Chinese company that I know has been around for a while, and has some following from other US-based investors I respect (for compliance purposes, this is not an endorsement of the company itself). Origin Agritech has had a long, volatile history since going public in 2006 and have been making headlines recently after receiving GMO approval in China for their corn seed.3. If you've been listening to this series for a while, you know, I usually only interview C-suite for this podcast. However, in Origin Agritech's case and most other US-listed Chinese companies, English is management's second language. Also, I've known Joe for a long time as an investor, he's been an investor in Origin Agritech since 2008, and has recently been brought on as VP Business Development for the company. There's a lot to unpack with Origin Agritech, and in this interview, we cover all of these topics and more. With that, please enjoy my conversation with Joe Ramelli, Vice President of Business Development for Origin Agritech (NASDAQ: SEED). Why the NEXT Economy is More than ESG and Impact Investing with Garvin Jabusch, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer for Green Alpha Advisors
My guest on the show today is Garvin Jabusch, Co-Founder and Chief Investment Officer for Green Alpha Advisors. I had last spoken Garvin in April 2020 discussing his investing philosophy then a follow up panel in August 2020 about why ESG and impact investing are taking center stage. It’s been three years. Suffice it to say, A LOT has changed since then, across the board, as well as the conversation around ESG. You might be hearing this and thinking that you’re about to listen to a full-on ESG podcast. Sure, we discuss the changing discourse around ESG/impact investing, but what I found most fascinating is our discussion around the intersectionality of trends and sectors, which is starting to take center stage in sustainability investing. For more information about Green Alpha Advisors, please visit: https://greenalphaadvisors.com/You can Follow Garvin Jabusch on Twitter @Garvin1313: https://twitter.com/Garvin1313Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Electrovaya is a technology-focused company with extensive IP, designs, develops, and manufactures proprietary lithium-ion batteries, battery systems, and battery-related products for energy storage, clean electric transportation, and other specialized applications. In 2009, when Raj joined the company, it was in the automotive space and that was their main focus as a battery supplier. What's fascinating about Electrovaya's story to me is how they had make the difficult choice to pivot their business strategy, which we discuss at length, as well as:* Why the company pivoted away from delivering batteries for the automotive industry to focusing specifically on the material handling vehicles space* How Electrovaya has performed since the 2018 pivot* Where he would like to see the company in 3-5 yearsWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Dr. Raj DasGupta, CEO of Electrovaya Inc. Deciphering ”Missionaries vs. Mercenaries” MicroCap CEOs with Howard Punch, President and CIO at Punch & Associates Investment Management, Inc.
My guest on the show today is Howard Punch, President and CIO at Punch & Associates Investment Management, Inc. Punch & Associates is a boutique investment advisory firm that has both a Small Cap and MicroCap Equity Strategy available for their clients. I invited Howard on to learn more about their equity strategies, his firm's approach to investing in MicroCaps, as well as their investing philosophy. We also chatted at the top of the conversation about how he would compare this current pessimism in Small/MicroCaps to other times in history where this pessimism existed - his take I found really interesting. As the title states, we did spend the majority of the time talking about categorizing MicroCap CEOs as either "Missionaries" or "Mercenaries", and how deciphering between the two has helped Howard better understand which management teams he wants to invest in.For more information about Punch & Associates, please visit: www.punchinvest.comWatch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. It’s Now the ”Discovery” Fund, not the ”MicroCap” Fund - Why? with Darren Chervitz, Portfolio Manager at Jacob Asset Management on the Discovery Fund Strategy
My guest on the show today is Darren Chervitz, Portfolio Manager at Jacob Asset Management on the Discovery Fund Strategy. This was the last recording I did prior to the conference, and I’ll be sharing the live podcast from Vegas next week. In the last 12-18 months, I’ve noticed a few firms changing the name of the “MicroCap” strategy to the ”Discovery” fund or strategy, and there’s a bit more nuance to its reasoning that from a marketing perspective, can be more inclusive. Darren jumps on to discuss the strategy change, plus a full on deep dive into MicroCaps, specifically how he thinks about trends and how that guides his investment process. For more information about Jacob Asset Management and the Discovery Fund Strategy, please visit: https://jacobam.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. MicroCaps vs. Failed Startups with Vijar Kohli, Co-Founder of Golden Door Asset Management
My guest on the show today is Vijar Kohli, Co-Founder of Golden Door Asset Management, and is a Keynote Speaker at our upcoming conference, the Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS. He’ll be speaking on Wednesday, April 26 at 12:30pm in Track 1 following Chris Tessin’s presentation. We titled Vijar’s presentation in Vegas, ”MicroCaps vs. Failed Startups” - the idea for which came from all these failed SPACs in recent years, and perhaps they would’ve been better going public a different way (or in some cases, not at all). MicroCaps provide a level of transparency (or at least they should and legally obligated to) that small, private venture-stage companies cannot, as well as an opportunity for investors to participate before they get picked up by institutional buyers. Vijar and I talk about this dynamic, the problem with public markets for MicroCaps and some especially hot takes that you’ll have to tune in to hear. For more information about Golden Door Asset Management, please visit: https://www.goldendoorasset.com/You can Follow Vijar Kohli on Twitter @VijarKohli: https://twitter.com/VijarKohliWatch on YouTube: Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Greystone Logistics, Inc. (OTCQB: GLGI): Manufactures 100% Recycled Plastic Shipping Pallets for Broad Range of Industries
My guest on the show today is Warren Kruger, CEO of Greystone Logistics, Inc. (OTCQB: GLGI). Greystone Logistics, Inc. is focused on the fast-growing plastic segment of the $9.5 billion pallet industry, with its manufacturing facility located in Bettendorf, IA and its Executive offices located in Tulsa, OK.For those wondering what a pallet is, those are the flat wooden structures that heavy goods are put so that they can be moved using a fork-lift truck. One of the key differentiators is that they manufacture recycled plastic pallets vs. those traditional wooden pallets that you've for sure seen at your local Costco. While some folks might see the pallet industry as a sexy business, most folks in our investing world would lovingly refer to Greystone as a classic boring company. Some of my favorite interviews are with classic boring companies because I get to learn more about a topic that I never thought I would. That's why I invited on Warren, to share more about Greystone Logistics, and:* How Greystone's pallets are differentiated and unique compared to wood pallets, and other plastic pallet manufacturers* Warren has been with the company for 10+ years, how has the company evolved during his time there* Their strategy for attacking the plastic segment of the $9.5 billion pallet industry; and,* Post-COVID, supply chain issues and whether this has been a tailwind for Greystone Logistics. With that, please enjoy my conversation with Warren Kruger, CEO of Greystone Logistics, Inc. The Largest Allocator to MicroCap Managers in the World with Chris Tessin, Managing Partner and CIO at Acuitas Investments
My guest on the show today is Chris Tessin, Managing Partner and CIO of Acuitas Investments. As the title states, Acuitas is the largest allocator to MicroCap managers in the world - their Microcap strategy pursues its investment objective using a multi-manager process by allocating assets among one or more high confidence managers that invest in inefficient segments of the equity markets. I wanted to learn more about their MicroCap fund of funds strategy and their experience working with MicroCap managers.I’ve had a number of conversations with MicroCap fund managers in recent months, and in addition to the rough performance amongst MicroCap stocks, redemptions and lack of in-flows have also been a cause for concern. And what’s worse, everyone and their grandparents agree, almost every quality MicroCap (and small cap) have taken haircuts across the board - now is one of the best times to dive deep on names trading at much cheaper prices. Managers need new in-flows in order to participate. This is where allocators like Acuitas enter the conversation.Chris will be doing a keynote presentation in Las Vegas on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 - if you’re a MicroCap portfolio manager, investor or family office, he and his partner, Doug Porter want to meet you. Hear what Chris and I discuss, and then join us all in person in Vegas for the opportunity to network and meet with an allocator; conferences might charge up to $5000 to meet with folks like Chris and Doug - our event is complimentary to all buy-side. Global Crossing Airlines Group, Inc. (NEO: JET) (OTCQB: JETMF): Filling the Need for Air Travel That Existing Carriers Cannot
My guest on the show today is Ryan Goepel, CFO of Global Crossing Airlines Group, Inc. (NEO: JET) (OTCQB: JETMF). Global Crossing Airlines Group, also known as GlobalX, is a US 121 domestic flag and supplemental Airline flying the Airbus A320 family aircraft. GlobalX flies as a passenger ACMI and charter airline serving the US, Caribbean, European and Latin American markets. In 2023, GlobalX entered ACMI cargo market flying the A321 freighter.I found Global Crossing Airlines Group on several forums I subscribe to, notably on MicroCapClub, and you might be asking yourself, oh boy, an airline, here we go. However, since starting the company in January 2020, Global Crossing Airlines has grown significantly and I wanted to better understand how and why this occurred, plus:* Global Crossing's growth goals and how they hope to achieve them* Original thesis for the company's founding* Addressing downside risks/adding more planes to the fleet; and* How folks understand the companyWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Ryan Goepel, CFO of Global Crossing Airlines Group, Inc. Discerning Management Commentary: Are They Being Real or Saying What We Want to Hear? with Josh Womack and Tom Carey, Womack Capital Partners
My guests on the show today are Josh Womack and Tom Carey from Womack Capital Partners. This episode is especially timely with our conference coming up in Las Vegas because, as we covered here many times before, when you invest in a MicroCap stocks, you’re primarily making a bet on the jockey aka management. That means part of your due diligence process, in my opinion, should be listening to conference calls, interviews, presentations management has done, as well as meet with management in a 1x1 meeting and asking as many questions as you have. We’ve done many episodes discussing the do’s and don’ts of speaking with management, but surprisingly, we’d never done anything about how we should think about the information conveyed. That’s where Josh and Tom enter the conversation, both of whom have an immense amount of experience meeting with management. Tom’s background, in particular, I think differentiates their research process - his transition from doing investor relations full-time to being on the buy-side I think offers unique insight from someone who’s been in the room with management teams discussing how they want to speak with shareholders. For more information about Womack Capital Partners, please visit: https://www.womackcapitalpartners.com/To register for the upcoming Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS happening on April 25-27, 2023, please visit: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/Watch on YouTube: Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights. Data I/O (NASDAQ: DAIO): Device Programming and Security Provisioning for Manufactured Products
My guest on the show today is Anthony Ambrose, President & CEO of Data I/O (NASDAQ: DAIO). Data I/O (NASDAQ: DAIO) is a global provider of advanced data and security deployment solutions. These solutions are used by some of the world’s largest manufacturers, programming centers, and contract manufacturers to securely program integrated circuits and bring their electronic devices to life. Virtually every electronic product today incorporates one or more programmable semiconductor devices that contain data and operating instructions essential for the proper operation of the product. You hear that description, and one thinks, "ok, I can wrap my head around that", but then when you ask the question after, "ok, well what does that mean?", that's when the fun part of being a hightech MicroCap comes into play. Now, what do I mean when I say that - well, not every MicroCap story is as simple as a consumer goods story or some SaaS platform - that is both what provides opportunity and, conversely, barriers to entry if something sounds too complicated. In the case of Data I/O, they are somewhere in the middle, but I say all of this because we spend the first part of the interview working through the best way to understand their business for the every day, non-hightech investor. We also discuss:* Automotive electronics growth and their place in this market* Understanding the SentriX platform, and;* Vision for the company for the next 3-5 yearsWith that, please enjoy my conversation with Anthony Ambrose, President & CEO of Data I/O. ”Top Tier” Ideas Track in Las Vegas, Top Tier Criteria and Sneak Peak at 4 Presenters: $ATGN $INX.V $LIFD $HGBL with Maj Soueidan, Founder & Editor of GeoInvesting.com
My guest on the show today is Maj Soueidan, Founder & CEO of GeoInvesting.com. In my opinion, Maj is a legend in MicroCap investing. In my nearly 10+ years of getting to know Maj, his investing style, and how he evaluates companies, he’s on the Mount Rushmore of MicroCap investors of the last 20+ years. This is the reason I invite Maj to be a guest on my show, as well as headline any conference we do. When he speaks, you should listen, and if you have a chance to meet him and chat with him, you should.Maj will be hosting a Top Tier Track on Day 2 of our upcoming conference: the Planet MicroCap Showcase, happening on April 25-27, 2023. This has been an idea we’ve chatted about for years and finally making it happen. Basically, MicroCap management teams that fit Maj’s ”Top Tier” criteria (which we describe in today’s pod), will be giving 10-15 overviews of their businesses followed by Q&A with Maj and the audience. I’m really excited about this part of our agenda, and wanted to dedicate an episode of the pod to, yes shamelessly plug our upcoming event in Vegas (not going to deny that), but also discuss what the idea is, Maj’s Top Tier criteria, why this criteria is important to digest with the current state of the markets and discuss a few names that will be participating. Maj and I always have a fun, lively conversation and this should serve as a fun preview of what you can expect in Las Vegas if you choose to join us.For more information about GeoInvesting.com, please visit: https://geoinvesting.com/You can Follow Maj Soueidan on Twitter @majgeoinvesting: https://twitter.com/majgeoinvestingTo register for the upcoming Planet MicroCap Showcase: VEGAS happening on April 25-27, 2023, please visit: https://planetmicrocapshowcase.com/Watch on YouTube:Today’s episode is sponsored by:Stream by AlphaSense, an expert interview transcript library that integrates AI-generated call summaries and NLP search technology so their clients can quickly pinpoint the most critical insights.
