S2 Ep 26Episode 26: Bowl Preview; The Double Header

As we reach the climax of the season, Rob and Joe preview the Division 1 and Division 2 Bowls. The Double-Header event is taking place at the home of the NI Razorbacks in Newforge Sports Complex on this Sunday 31st July. The Division 2 Bowl sees the almost-perfect-season Louth Mavericks facing an Antrim Jets side that's building momentum. In the Division 1 Bowl, the UL Viking's will clash with Westmeath Minotaurs in the final chapter of their trilogy. They're 1-a-piece against each other this season, but who will take the Bowl? In this episode, the boys chat with the Razorbacks' Robbie Walker & Lyndsay McVeigh, and the Crusaders' Nathan "Mango" Mangan. Robbie Walker began playing American Football in Northern Ireland in 1987 for the Eastside Jets, before moving on the play for the Tennets Belfast Giants and a few games for the Belfast Spartans. Finally, he moved to the Craigavon Cowboys; he won the Shamrock Bowl in 1990, receiving Defensive MVP for his Bowl performance, and went on to play the Brussels Raiders the next year. He was forced into retirement at the end of that season due to a nasty knee injury. This year, Robbie was invited down to Razorbacks' training "for a look" through Head Coach Gareth "Suntan" Millar's Dad. Recently described as "my right-hand-man" by HC Suntan, Robbie is now Assistant HC of the Razorbacks, in addition to being well-and-truly hooked to football again! Lyndsay McVeigh has been in AFI for 12 years, most of which time was with the 5-time Shamrock Bowl winning Belfast Trojans. She has worked her way up from reluctant chain crew member to team videographer. This year, 2022, has been a year of firsts for Lyndsay in AFI; she has become an American Football official, a member of the AFI Communications Department, and has joined the NI Razorbacks. Lyndsay can chat football as well as anyone we've ever met. We have a phrase about Lyndsay; if football paid her, she'd be minted! Nathan "Mango" Mangan is an Offensive Lineman for the Cill Dara Crusaders. He joined shortly after their IAFL2 Bowl win, and plays flag football with the them also. He is the club's Public Relations Officer since 2021. A Patriots fan and probably the only man in Ireland with a David Andrews jersey! In this episode, Mango gives some well-needed and long-overdue love to the linemen! With special thanks to Robbie Walker, Lyndsay McVeigh and Nathan "Mango" Mangan. S2 Ep 24Special Episode: International Love

bonus

In this special episode, we give love to our athletes and coaches preforming on the international football scene across Europe and the UK. Matty O’Meara (Crusaders & Panthers); played on the Irish Wolfhounds u20s who played against AFW American Select team in 2018, he was due to start against Bristol Pride before that game was cancelled, he’s now on the senior Irish Wolfhounds team. He has international playing experience in Spain and is currently quarterback for the Ravensburg Razorbacks in GFL1 in Germany. Kelly chats to him after his first game-start, as he prepares for a challenging upcoming fixture against the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Joe chats with Alex Kusmirek (Trojans & UCD), who both played together on the Irish Wolfhounds u20s. Alex is now a senior Irish Wolfhound who is no stranger to National Championships having won a number of them with the Trojans. He’s also no stranger to international football, having played with Tamworth Phoenix, Kiel Baltic Hurricanes, and now with the Edinburgh Wolves who are currently pushing for a playoff spot. Alex gives insight to how international football can be beneficial, even when things don’t go to plan. Last but certainly not least; Andy Dennehy (current OC for the Irish Wolfhounds, current coach for UCD, former quarterback and coach for the Dublin Rebels, 9-time Shamrock bowl winner; Rebels & UCD); and Michael Sykes (Irish Wolfhound and one of the top DBs in AFI for many a year; UCD), have played on opposing sides of the same pitch a number of times over the years. This Sunday 3rd of July, they’ll meet again in the Tulip Bowl – the National American Football Championship in the Netherlands. Andy; OC of the Amsterdam Crusaders; will look to overcome the Rotterdam 010 Trojans. Michael; current DB on the 010 Trojans D; hopes to thwart that plan. And of course, we ask each of our guests a few questions about The Domestic Game! S2 Ep 22Episode 22: We'll Win It, as long as we don't Lose It

Rob re-joins Kelly and Joe as playoff spots start to become scarce across American Football Ireland With the Mavericks having clinched the first playoff spot of Div2, a win for the Jets this week will go along way in helping them to secure the second. The Razorbacks will be hoping to disrupt that plan, predicted to beat the Pirates before the forfeit was announced, the Razorbacks still need the Giants to win this weekend. In Div1, the Minotaurs have secured their playoff appearance. The Vikings and Vipers, likely to finish the regular season on the same record, and with a draw head-to-head, will look to gain the biggest points difference to secure that all-important home-field advantage. In light of the Trinity forfeit, the Crusaders, still with an outside shot, will look to win out their next three games. And in Premier Div, we preview the top-table clash of the two remaining undefeated teams in The Game of The Regular Season which will see 6-0 UCD make the short trip to De La Salle Palmerstown RFC to take on the 5-0 Rebels. A win for UCD will clinch a homefield playoff game along with the #1 seed. **We've recently launched our website, check out thedomesticgame.com for more!**

S2 Ep 20Episode 20: Nobody Remembers the Titans

Your hosts Joe, Kelly and Rob review games played since the end of April, which, in the Premier League, saw two shutouts with Panthers @ Rhinos finishing 0-17, and Admirals @ UCD finishing 0-20. Our Belfast teams not having much luck in Dublin with the Rebels rolling over the Knights and the Trojans at home with games finishing 30 - 7 and 38 - 6, respectively. The Cowboys were upset by the Rhinos who won at home in Castleknock 28 - 16. Remaining in Premier, but looking ahead, will the Admirals put their first score of 2022 on the board against the Panthers in Palmerstown this Sunday? Will the following weekend see the Rhinos remain in winning form against a formidable UCD team? Will the Rebels roll over the Knights again, and will Loughran and The 'Boys return to winning ways against the Admirals in Craigavon? Div1 saw the unfortunate news of a forfeit season from the Wexford camp, but with much excitement upcoming, we look to the Vipers who journey from one end of the country to the next to take on the Vikings at home, and we look to the midlands where Trinity will take on the Crusaders who will look to end the Students' shutout streak. In Div3, Giants held the Pirates scoreless in a 6 - 0 finish. The Razorbacks upset the Jets at home, winning 20 - 16, but couldn't keep it going in the rescheduled fixture against the Mavericks (6 - 24). Razorbacks seek redemption against the Mavericks again this month. In this tight league, the Jets and the Giants will clash in the battle for playoff seeds, while the Pirates will take on the Jets at home, still looking to gain their first W of 2022. **We have a new distributor so please re-like, re-subscribe and re-five-star-review The Domestic Game**

S2 Ep 20Bonus Episode: With Wolfhounds Flag Head Coach Dan Shaw

With the recent announcement that American Football Ireland will be hosting the IFAF European Flag Championships in August 2023, we sat down with the newly appointed head coach of Wolfhounds Flag Dan Shaw to discuss his plan's for the squad, his approach to player selection and the road to Limerick 2023. Dan first stepped into football in Ireland as the Head Coach of the Coleraine Elks Flag Team in 2016. He spent 3 years with the Belfast Trojans as a DB coach and also ran their flag team in his time there. After leaving the Trojans, he assisted the foundation of the Belfast City Lions and spent their first year as chairperson. At national level, he was previously DC with the Wolfhounds Flag team. Episode Content Correction: On reflection, it came across that we were collectively saying that there was a bias in player selection on the previous Wolfhound Flag team. We’d like to be clear that was not the case. We were simply addressing the public/common knowledge that some clubs *felt* there was a bias. We apologise to Coach Guillaume Polanski for the error. GP is intrinsically passionate about the development of Flag Football in Ireland. As HC, GP’s goal was to build a steady growing national structure to prepare for future competitions. Given the strength that Wolfhounds Flag grew to, the future competitions on the horizon and how the team continues to grow from strength-to-strength under Coach Dan Shaw, we would say goal accomplished! Coach GP continues his good work in AFI as our Director of Flag Football.

Rob and Kelly are back and on-form with the usual game analysis and loads of Senior Kitted Football to discuss. Firstly, the final weekend of the Donaghy Group Cup between the N.I. Razorbacks, Causeway Giants, Antrim Jets and the Donegal/Derry Vipers, the latter team ultimately coming out on top with a perfect season. S1 Ep 10Episode 10: In Development..

Usual episode antics have been postponed for this very important announcement: This week all AFI members received a survey request to their inbox. Kelly interviews the man behind the request; our AFI Director of Development Gavin Nelson. A new face to American Football Ireland and certainly one that we are happy have in our community. Gavin has over 15 years of professional and volunteer experience in different areas of sports’ development. He chats about his experience making positive impact on clubs and communities in sport, the purpose of the survey, his plans to support our grassroots AFI clubs and volunteers, the barriers to club development and his immediate advice that any volunteer/club can take on right now. Don’t worry, it’ll be business as usual next episode 😉 With special thanks to Gavin Nelson. (Originally published

S1 Ep 9Episode 9: Who Let the Dogs Out

Last week it was announced that two of our own AFI players, Olawale Gazal and Kevin Mayo from the South Dublin Panthers have been signed to play NCAA Div III football with North Park University in Chicago, Illinois. The Wolfhounds kitted team return to training, so Kelly went to the National Sports Campus and caught up with Head Coach Ciaran O’Sullivan, National Program Director Alan Orr, players Marty Caskey and Alex Kusmirek and Defensive Coordinator Brendan Kelleher. A new merger in the flag scene with the Tigers joining with the Raptors may future-proof the Raptors for the coming years and enhance their meme-game no end. This Sunday will see the finals of the Donaghy Group Cup where we will be onsite in Derry to capture the action between the Jets, Vipers, Giants and Razorbacks. With special thanks to Ciaran O'Sullivan, Alan Orr, Brendan Kelleher, Alex Kusmirek, and Marty Caskey. (Originally published August 2021)
