In this roundtable discussion, the team at Perfect Organism sits down to discuss the processes of the Alien lifecycle. With six canonical films and two AvP films, does the traditional lifecycle continue to be effective? Ep 201179 // Plans for a New Year, and Gratitude for a Year Past
2021 is a year that will go down in Perfect Organism history as one of our favorites. We talked to our heroes, we reopened the marvelously fascinating wound that is Alien: Covenant, and we grew our team. We read new comics, played a new board game, devoured another Alex White novel. We spent another Alien Day with friends and family, and released another audio drama. But just wait till you hear what we've got planned for 2022! Join Jaime and Patrick as they capture this moment in time, and stick around to the end to hear the names of all the Patrons who've made it possible. Ep 200178 // ALIENS: Special Edition vs. Theatrical - A Roundtable
Aliens: Special Edition was a thing of mystery for many years before it saw a formal release on Laser Disc in 1991. In the interim, many of us remembered specific scenes we weren't sure were real until James Cameron gave his seal of approval on his original vision. In this roundtable episode, Jaime, Patrick, Christian, Andie, and Perry sit down to discuss the merits of the special edition, and how they stack up against the theatrical release. Is one version superior than the other? We attempt to answer this question and more. Join us. This will be the last episode of 2022 until January 4th. We wish all of you a very Merry Christmas, and Happy Holidays. // Apple Podcasts: bit.ly/perfectorganismitunes // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.perfectorganism.com. // If you’d like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Building Better Worlds // To support the show, please consider visiting www.perfectorganism.com/support. Ep 199177 // I‘ll Give Them F*cking Aliens: An Archaeological Expedition into Alien: Covenant (Exquisite Corpse Part Five)
There is a time shortly after the release of Prometheus and before pre-production on Alien: Covenant where things get ... murky. Ridley Scott was doing interview after interview, talking about a planned trilogy (or was it a quintology?) of prequel films in the coming years. The rumor mill on Prometheus 2 (or was it Paradise Lost?) was in full swing. Things were happening. In this installment in our ongoing exploration into Alien: Covenant, Jaime and Patrick are joined by Aaron Percival of AVP Galaxy to comb through those early days in a search for answers. What happened to Lindelof? How did Blomkamp's art dumps change the narrative? We dive into all this and more in this archaeological dig of an episode. Be sure to listen to Aaron and friends on the AVP Galaxy Podcast! Ep 198176 // Interviewing Alien: Covenant‘s Benjamin Rigby + Anatomy of a Scene: The Medbay (Exquisite Corpse - Dissecting Alien: Covenant Part Four)
The Medbay sequence in Alien: Covenant shocked, enthralled, and terrified audiences back in 2017. In this next installment of our ongoing exploration into the film, actor Benjamin Rigby—who, as Covenant's Ledward, is at the very center of that iconic scene—takes Jaime and Patrick deep into the creative process behind it. Be sure to follow Benjamin on IG (@brigby) for some amazing photography! Released in 1984, Lynch's Dune would crash and burn at the box office, while subsequently forging a cult following in the years to come. Ep 196175 // David‘s Lab | A Roundtable Discussion Part Two (Exquisite Corpse - Dissecting Alien: Covenant Part Three)
We’re back with another roundtable! Alien: Covenant presents a lot to talk about, and on this wide-ranging installment we tackle some of the more problematic aspects of the film. What do we wrestle with? Where does Covenant fall flat? Why is it so hard to stop talking about this freaking movie?! Join Jaime, Patrick, Christian, Andie, Maj, and special guest Matt John as they venture further into David's creepy basement. Ep 195174 // David‘s Lab | A Roundtable Discussion Part One (Exquisite Corpse - Dissecting Alien: Covenant Part Two)
There's no beating around the bush: Alien: Covenant is, at its heart, a divisive film in fandom. So how do we make sense of it? Do we throw it all out and hope for a more unifying film next time? It's never that simple. While there is a lot that is controversial about Alien: Covenant, there is a lot that is profound as well. In this roundtable discussion, Jaime, Patrick, Christian, Andie, Perry, and Maj jump into the deep end to discuss a film that continues to be a flashpoint in fandom. While not the success the studio had hoped for—or the rallying point fans were desperate to receive—Covenant is worthy of exploration. We hope you enjoy. Ep 194173 // Where It All Began (Exquisite Corpse - Dissecting Alien: Covenant Part One)
When Alien: Covenant was released in theaters back in 2017, it was nothing short of explosive. EVERYONE had an opinion about it. And for a lot of us in Alien fandom, Covenant represents a painful time in our community. But why? What is it about this movie that inspires such intense reactions, good and bad? Join Jaime and Patrick as they revisit the very first on-air discussion they ever had (way back in Episode 59). How does Alien: Covenant sit now, four years after its release? What themes have stood the test of time; what has soured with age? Where do we go from here? How did we get here in the first place? This is the first episode of a full, extended series that many of you have been asking for. We're calling it "Exquisite Corpse - Dissecting Alien: Covenant." And we can't wait to take this journey with you. Ep 191170 // Interviewing Scott Rogers, Designer of Alien: Fate of the Nostromo
As Alien fans, we've got a lot of ways to engage with the stories we love. That's just what Scott Rogers, the legendary game designer behind Ravensburger's new Alien: Fate of the Nostromo, had in mind as he and his team brought this new tabletop experience to life. Ep 173154 // Gods of War: The Engineer Discussion | Part One (Open Her Eyes: The Journey to Prometheus Part 9)
As controversial a film as Prometheus is, there has been no question that many of the ideas presented are worthy of the mythology of the Alien series. One such idea is the Engineers. Ep 171153 // Interviewing Phillip Kennedy Johnson, the Writer of Marvel's Upcoming Alien Comics
The announcement of Alien leaving Dark Horse for Marvel sent shockwaves through fandom, and for good reason. After more than three decades with the venerable underdog publisher, Alien was going to an entertainment powerhouse. Many of us felt like this was either very good news or very bad news. Either way, the announcement has had fandom on tenterhooks for the past year. Who would write these stories? What would they have to say? Would Marvel—and, by extension, Disney—understand Alien enough to get this right? Well, we at Perfect Organism are delighted to bring you this wild, nearly two-hour interview with Phillip Kennedy Johnson, the man writing these comics—an interview that essentially serves as an extended "yes" to the question of whether Marvel knows what it's doing with our beloved franchise. Phillip is a lifelong Alien nut with an abiding love for the property and a passion to get it right. In this interview, Jaime and Patrick have the opportunity to speak with Phillip about what that means. What Alien is really about. What these comics are going to attempt to express. How to tell stories that feel immediate and relevant in the world we inhabit. This interview is many things, but perhaps most of all it's a love letter. A love letter to comic books, and a love letter to that moment we get to cherish time and again when we realize how many deeply, beautifully nerdy fans are out there around the world. We hope you love it. This is one of our best. Stay tuned for Building Better World-submitted questions at the end, and stick around after the credits for a sneak peek at a new show we think you'll love! //iTunes: bit.ly/perfectorganismitunes // Google Play:bit.ly/perfectorganismgoogleplay // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.perfectorganism.com. // If you’d like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Building Better Worlds // To support the show, please consider visiting www.perfectorganism.com/support. Ep 170152 // Interviewing Writer Alan Dean Foster
To many Alien fans across the world, the name "Alan Dean Foster" has become legend. Many of us grew up reading his novelizations—book treatments so rich with character and setting they felt like movies unto themselves. In addition to his four decades of work on the Alien franchise, Alan Dean Foster has written well over 100 novels spanning science fiction, fantasy, and novelizations of some of the most globally beloved franchises (Star Wars, Star Trek, Terminator, and many others). In this relaxed, free-ranging interview, Mr. Foster takes Jaime and Patrick on a journey through his career in and out of Hollywood. We discuss his connection to the Alien series, his dreams for the future, the nature of creativity, and a heck of a lot more. We also dedicate time at the end to listener questions (thanks for submitting them at Building Better Worlds!). Be sure to check out alandeanfoster.com for a wealth of information on his work. While Prometheus may be controversial for many different reasons, what is generally agreed upon is its production design and attention to every detail. Ep 161147 // ALIEN: 40 Years 40 Artists | Interviewing Matt Hatton - Tristan Jones - and Dane Hallett
Like so many things this year, Alien: 40 Years 40 Artists was delayed for months due to world events. Luckily—as anyone with a copy can attest—the wait was beyond worth it. Packed with stunning artwork and personal anecdotes, the book is a love letter to the franchise and a wellspring of inspiration. It’s also a great opportunity to see some familiar names trying new things with their talents. Three of those names are especially beloved to Alien fans around the world: Dane Hallett, Matt Hatton, and Tristan Jones. In this extended conversation—very much a love letter to the franchise in itself—these three super-artists/super-fans chat with Jaime and Patrick about what Alien means to them, what draws them back to it year after year, and so much more. Ep 160146 // Spaihts, Lindelof, and Two Very Different Scripts (Open Her Eyes: The Journey to Prometheus Part Six)
In this next installment of our ongoing exploration into the origins of Prometheus, Jaime and Patrick (with special guest Dan Ferlito, their cohost on Shoulder of Orion: The Blade Runner Podcast) dive deeply into two very important documents: Jon Spaihts' ALIEN: Engineers and Damon Lindelof's Paradise. The quick, popularized version of events is that Jon Spaihts, hired by Scott and Fox to write a screenplay based on a compelling pitch, turned in something rough-hewn but interesting. Then Damon Lindelof, hot off the success of Lost, was brought in to give it a little Hollywood magic—and a less overt connection to Alien. But there's a lot more to it than that. Ep 158145 // A Galaxy of Fans: Evolutions and Revolutions in Alien Fandom (Open Her Eyes: The Journey to Prometheus Part Five)
Prometheus premiered at a curious time in Alien fandom. It'd been 15 years since the release of the previous canonical film in the main Alien continuity, and the internet was transitioning rapidly into something a lot more connected—and a lot more intense—than what it'd previously been. It was an era of tightly guarded secrets, leaked photos, buzzing internet forums, and nascent social media groups. And one of the most active places for fans to engage was (and is) AvPGalaxy (avpgalaxy.net). On this installment of our ongoing investigation into Prometheus, Jaime and Patrick spend some quality time with their friend Aaron Percival, AvPGalaxy's co-administrator and host of the AvPGalaxy podcast. They discuss where fandom was in the months leading up to Prometheus' premiere—and how various changes in studio marketing, social media, and public discourse came together to create a unique time to be an Alien fan. // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.perfectorganism.com. // If you’d like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Building Better Worlds // To support the show, please consider visiting www.perfectorganism.com/support. Ep 157144 // Alien: The Original Screenplay - An Interview with Cristiano Seixas, Writer
A lifetime ago—January 2020, to be exact—Dark Horse issued one of the most exciting press releases in Alien expanded universe history: Dan O'Bannon's original screenplay was getting a comic adaptation. The creative team tasked with this extraordinary challenge was more than up to it. Writer Cristiano Seixas has been an integral part of the Brazilian comics scene for decades. Active in writing, illustrating, animation, and more, he's also the Creative Director of Ghost Jack Entertainment (a game studio) and the founder of Casa dos Quadrinhos School of Visual Arts in Brazil. Ep 156143 // Nihilism (In Defense of Alien 3 Part Eight)
Jaime, and Patrick break down a recent article from Escapist Magazine (https://bit.ly/2XtabBY) that addresses the nihilism present in David Fincher's Alien 3. Is nihilism the true spirit of the Alien saga? Was Fincher's vision more in line tonally with Alien than Aliens? Patrick & Jaime attempt to answer these questions and more in this return to the controversial—yet beautiful—film, Alien 3. // For more on this and our other projects, please visit www.perfectorganism.com. // If you’d like to join the conversation, find us on our closed Facebook group: Building Better Worlds // To support the show, please consider visiting www.perfectorganism.com/support.
