059: Gabrielle Glancy – Helping Students Find and Realize Their Dreams

Gabrielle Glancy has been an entrepreneur since the age of four when she sold stickballs for ten cents less than cost back to the boys who had hit them onto her grandfather's roof in Sea Gate, Coney Island, where she grew up. Just before founding New Vision Learning, at the height of the dot com boom, Ms. Glancy invented Facebook (before there was such a thing) and called it Townsquare.com. The founder of eBay, whose daughter she had helped get into Williams, told her it was a brilliant idea, but that to generate revenue, she would need to sell ads. Selling ads seemed like selling out, and so she founded New Vision Learning instead. As a teacher, educational consultant and college counselor, for nearly thirty years, Gabrielle Glancy has been in the business of helping students find and realize their dreams. Not only has she helped countless students find a way to harness their strengths to overcome their challenges — to learn how to learn — but as Director of New Vision Learning, she has helped thousands of students — all over the Bay Area, New York City, Los Angeles, across the U.S., and all over the world, locate and get into the colleges of their dreams. Throughout her career, she has worked in admissions three separate times at three different and highly respected colleges and universities. She knows exactly what it takes to get in and that helps her every day as she guides students through the college application process. She has taught at some of the most prestigious secondary schools, colleges and universities in the world including The University of San Francisco, New College, Lang College, The New School for Social Research, Saint Ann's School for Gifted and Talented in New York City, Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough, California, The American-International School of Israel, The American School in London, and Villanova Prep, where she helped foreign and American students abroad (including boys from Eton and St. Paul's in London) prepare for the SATs and apply to college. For the past several years, she has been Series Editor of Best College Essays 2014, 2016 and 2018. And she has authored THE book on writing college essays called The Art of the College Essay, one of the bestselling books on the subject. Her new book, UNSTUCK, which helps students free themselves from writer's block, is now out. Gabrielle Glancy has been awarded Teacher of the Year by the National Association for Teachers of the ARTS, and won the European Council of Independent School's prize for educational writing. Her essay, "The Best You Know How to Be" was published in their journal. She is also a widely published writer. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review and The American Poetry Review. She has been featured on NPR and in USA Today. 058: Bowen Dwelle – Revealing The Truth About Depression, Alcohol, and The Power Of Intuition

Bowen Dwelle was born in 1970 and raised and lived most of his life in San Francisco. He now lives outside the machine, #homefree, and mobile in his van, spending much of his time in the high mountains of the American West. He did not discover his purpose until recently. He fell into a first career in software at an early age because they had computers around the house and finds it very fascinating. He got good at working on it and there were a lot of interesting jobs that had to do with computers as the internet was just coming online in the mid-'90s. Even as he succeeded in his first career, he knew that he does not want to continue on that path. As Bowen said, "I didn't know what my path was, but I knew that wasn't it". Along the way, he managed to start a business on his own, a small conference that gradually became a successful business. He worked on it for many years that it became successful enough to be sold in early 2015. The process of unearthing his purpose went in parallel with unwinding the depression that he had experienced for much of my life. He thinks it goes hand in hand. He was depressed because he didn't have a purpose, and as a man, aimlessness is failure. He didn't have purpose because his intuition wasn't working—and for the same reason, he couldn't move beyond his anxious and depressed state of mind. He couldn't hear the messages or see the signs, so he didn't know which way to go. As he gradually reawakened my intuition, he began to see indications of what mattered to him and of what was keeping him in such a low place emotionally. Finally, he emerged and was able to connect with his intuition, and with a sense of real purpose. 057: Caleigh Hernandez - Purchasing with a Purpose

Caleigh Hernandez is the founder of RoHo, a brand committed to social change. She's not just about pretty shoes though. She worked in the humanitarian and development world in East Africa, focusing on economic empowerment, child labor, and refugee programming. While walking through a craft market in Uganda, she was struck by the beauty of a pair of beaded leather sandals. At that moment she knew, she was hooked. These were more than a pair of shoes, they were an opportunity to break a cycle of poverty. After moving back from East Africa in late 2016, she founded RoHo where she committed herself to create opportunities for talented artisans across Kenya. In addition to paying RoHo artisans wages 50% higher than the industry standard, RoHo is also providing education grants to send artisans' children to quality local schools. Caleigh & RoHo have committed themselves to working to break the cycle of poverty in the short and long term. Since then she's been off the ground running, as RoHo has expanded from working with 42 artisans to over 400, 95% of which are women. RoHo was selected as one of 50 projects featured in the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network's Youth Solutions Report as well as in Forbes. Caleigh continues to speak about the importance of ethical consumerism, finding purpose in work and ways of supporting ethical businesses can be as impactful as giving to charity. "Treat clothes as disposable to one where you treat clothes as investments and things that are meant to last. Rather than focusing on quantity, the number of purses, the number of shoes, the number of bags, the number of whatever you have to I would rather invest in a smaller number of staple pairs of these items that would last ten times as long. It means that in the long term there is less waste in terms of textile and plastic waste. " "It felt a lot of times like I was pushing a boulder up the hill. And some days that boulder feels smaller, and some days that boulder feels bigger. But looking back, it's really cool to see how far we've come." "Success for me all comes down to impact. It's about how many people's lives have I been able to positively impact." 054: Tanur Badgley - PoP's 2nd Anniversary: An Interview with Your Host

Two years into creating and hosting People of Purpose, I sustained the podcast through challenges such as an intensive one year master's degree and teaching Residency program, the startup of a three state, three partner real estate investing business, and making the decision to get engaged, married, and move back to Thailand. And now People of Purpose has a team of five! Listen in this interview as I reflect on the different stages and challenges in my journey of purpose the day after my Thai fiance received her visa to the U.S. In this interview I was in Bangkok and interviewed by my valued friend Nikita Yatchenko while he was visiting family in Moscow. I think our interview captured so many of the challenges people who are on purposeful paths are facing. Topics like staying true to the goals you've made to yourself as you and your circumstances change - pursuing money within purpose - maintaining self care while having an enormous amount of responsibility. These are each so important to develop a stance toward and have a proactive plan in place for how you will handle all the shifts that come when pursuing a personally purposeful path. I absolutely loved sharing my thoughts and experiences on these pressing and impactful topics. 046: Tina Olsen & Julie Breckenfelder - Reinvigorating Energy, Purpose, and Creativity

During Julie's time as business-to-business marketer, she devoutly believed if you over-worked, put in the long hours, followed someone else's agenda, and consistently over delivered on everything… well, then people would notice, the fulfillment would flourish, and success would eventually come. The false hope was so real it was intoxicating. But she felt like a big-time imposter and failure in her heart! She had no idea why, until she slowed down and began to cut through the chaos and the noise. That's when she started to notice a pattern. A pattern of "success" paired with the feeling that she didn't deserve it. Why? Because she didn't earn it… she just followed the rules. Anyone can do that. Everything changed when she stopped being a robot and started listening to and trusting her gut. Now, Julie started intentionally honoring her values and is true to who she is at the core, which has propelled her into a world of more connection. It's absolutely counter intuitive from the rules she used to follow. The healthier, happier, and more mindful she is the more fulfillment and success is invited into her life, her career, and her relationships. Tina's journey began with her personal life "falling apart." Having all known structures crumble is a huge gift from the soul, as a clear-seeing emerges about what truly matters. A no bullcrap way of living permeates all aspects of life: all love, no more fear. One of the things she could now see clearly is that she's not here to force change upon anyone. Much of her corporate job consisted of being a change agent for people and groups who did not believe in the changes that were being made. Add this energy to a fear-based culture and the dissonance was deafening. This inspired Tina to set forth on a vision of bringing love to corporate culture. The energy of love is what opens the doors to true creation, innovation, care, compassion, and a sense of purposeful connecting living. We spend more hours per day with our co-workers than our families and friends, why do we continue tolerating fear, toxicity, and chronic stress as a way of living this one precious life? CORELEMENT is here to catalyze change through your only true competitive advantage: your people. We each had 15+ year, highly-successful corporate careers, and chose to leave. Why? Culture cancer. We each experienced the pain, chronic stress, and disconnection created by fear-based cultures and a definition of achievement that left out what truly mattered to us. Contact them at [email protected] Listen as we talk about: The big visions I've downloaded from my soul...how much grip and fear do you have for those goals? I only need a vision, I don't need the intermediary stuff What is your mission, what are your values...people will step into their own zones of genius I'm here to create a world of truth, cause through truth there is so much freedom We are asked to live in scarcity and fear, and it's not truth Being aware and noticing new things everyday Taking me back to the pure, blissful child inside Resources mentioned: www.youtube.com/watch www.amazon.com/Theory-Everything www.amazon.com/Allegory-Cave Sign up or hear more about our Path to Purpose course here Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... 043: Joel Vos - Helping Others Live a Meaningful Life

Dr. Joel Vos is a psychologist and philosopher. He does research, teaches and offers psychological therapy to help individuals live a meaningful and satisfying life even in life's most challenging moments. He leads the professional doctorate in Existential Psychotherapy and Counseling at the London New School of Psychotherapy and Counseling. The research group that he chairs at the Metanoia Institute in London focuses at developing psychological interventions to help people live a meaningful life, particularly in challenging life circumstances such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and socioeconomic disenfranchisement. Joel has conducted world-wide reviews of research on meaning, which he has summarized in his book 'Meaning in Life: An Evidence-Based Handbook for Practitioners'. His reviews have, for instance, shown how people all over the world experience meaning, different types of meaning, cope with life's limitations, and how they can be helped by professionals. His main conclusion, based on over 80 clinical trials, is that people can be effectively helped to live a meaningful and satisfying life, when practitioners systematically and explicitly address what they may experience as meaningful. Joel has over 80 scientific publications, and has given hundreds of lectures and workshops world-wide. During the British mental health awareness week in 2019 his book 'Mental Health in Crisis' -written together with Ron Roberts and James Davies- will be released, which describes that in our modern western countries we experience a large crisis where problems are often caused by socioeconomic circumstances which limit people from living a meaningful life, while the mental health care system seems to fail due to a focus on superficial interventions which do not address the complete and true problem for people. Joel's next book, 'The Economics of Meaning in Life', will further explore how mental health problems are caused by the Capitalist Life Syndrome, which is the functionalist focus in our current economy on materialist, hedonist and self-oriented types of meanings. Joel is chair of the IMEC, International Meaning Conferences, in London, of which the next one will be held 12-14 July 2019, with an amazing line-up of speakers from all over the world, crossing disciplines such as psychology, psychotherapy, sociology, politics, economics, art and poetry. Joel is also director of Meaning Online, an online platform with resources on meaning and purpose. Joel is the organizer of the London charity, Punk4MentalHealth, which raises awareness for mental health via music, art, lectures and workshops for a broad audience. Since 2018 he has been working on developing online resources on meaning via his website www.meaningonline.org, you can purchase his books via www.amazon.com, and follow him on Facebook @ www.facebook.com/drjoelvos Listen as we talk about: The reason for all of the mental health issues in the world What the Capitalist Life Syndrome is How he defines the difference between 'having fun' and being fulfilled in life How his experience with tribes in the Amazon allows him to see just how disconnected the world really is The four reasons he gives that could help our world's mental state How we need to peel back the layers of our selves until we get to the real core of meaning How the best way to live a meaningful life is to not be in our heads That we fact that we already know how to live a meaningful life, and that meaning lies in our feelings The affect of traveling upstream instead of going with the flow How he recommends we stay in a flow state, instead of being thrown around in our work or relationships Sign up or hear more about our Path to Purpose course here Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... 037: Tanur Badgley - Teaching Others How to Discover Their Purpose and Inspiring Them to Fulfill It

Bryan Falchuk was a guest of People of Purpose on episode 015. He came into my life by serendipity on his 80 something podcast interview. His story of losing more than 100 pounds and overcoming the pain of his wife's battle with cancer is inspirational. Today he runs marathons and inspires people to live a better life every day through his book, Ted Talks, and now his podcast Do a Day. He asked me to be a guest on his podcast to share my story of how I used my rock bottom experience nearly dying after a major fall at Yosemite National Park to live a life more alive and purpose driven. Below is his writeup: "After suffering many injuries and a major concussion when he fell off the side of a mountain, Tanur was forced to relook at the idea of purpose, the choices we make to relearn life, and how to actually live it. Tanur had me on his show a while ago, and I was blown away by the depth of his soul and his humanness, and knew I had to have him on my show one day. Let's just say I wasn't let down." Tanur Badgley is a school teacher, blogger, and host of his own podcast, People of Purpose. Fascinated with understanding the unique gifts he's been given and how he is shaped into a higher purpose when he chooses to live with full appreciation of these gifts. At age 19, during the summer break after his freshman year of college, Tanur was hiking in Yosemite National park with his father and younger brother. When his younger brother decided to venture off the beaten path and got stuck, Tanur found himself on a small ledge with no safe way down. Tanur ended up barrel rolling down the mountain, and sustained multiple injuries, but miraculously none of them were fatal. Three years later, Tanur finished college without a plan or purpose. he found himself working a soulless corporate sales job, battling depression, and suffering from a second concussion. He finally found his path and purpose in 2015 when he packed up and moved to Phrae, Thailand to become an English teacher to 400 5th and 6th graders. During this time he kept up his blog, Student of the World, with information he found out about himself and the world through teaching, volunteering on a organic farm in Cambodia, trekking to Mt. Everest Bas Camp, sitting for a 5-day meditation course, and his month-long yoga teacher training certification course in Rishikesh, India. One year later, Tanur felt happy and whole with his new life style, so he decided not to renew his teaching contract, opting instead to vagabond and couch-surf across Southeast Asia, the U.S., and Canada through family and friends. During this time, Tanur started his podcast, People of Purpose, in October of 2017 because he felt compelled to go beyond himself and begin a project that shares the stories and wisdom of all the purposeful people he met along the way. People of Purpose features guests who live with a high degree of intentionality, are leading communities toward positive change, and are treading a path that is very authentic to their passions and purpose. People of Purpose has expanded to now include a biweekly newsletter where Tanur shares what he's been experiencing and dwelling on to grow in his purpose and how they can be applied to your life as well. After 15 months of odd jobs and moving around, Tanur finally moved to San Francisco in July of 2018 where he's working on getting his Masters of Education in one year through an accelerated program and teaches 7th grade at a urban, public-charter school in San Francisco. Tanur is driven by the purpose he can express through each of his endeavors and projects and the consistency of learning and challenging that helps him grow into his purpose which is "to be a conduit of God's love by accepting everything He is, opening himself to learning challenges through difference, and using his gifts to live, purposefully, in order to help others find their purposes and fulfill their potential." You can follow Tanur on his journey through Facebook and Instagram at @peopleofpurposepodast Bryan has been so generous to grant me republishing rights so we could share this with the People of Purpose audience. Listen as we talk about: How intentionality and purpose are the key themes to both this interview and Tanur's life journey How Tanur chose the more risky choice while on the ledge with his brother, and it turned out to be the more foolish choice. How Tanur was frustrated with the rescue team because they focused their help on him, while his brother was still on the ledge and in danger. How he got his second concussion while he was angry because he was on the wrong life path and letting it effecting his day to day. How Tanur got to focus on himself while healing from his head injury and it helped him define his purpose and how to live for his own interests. How he dropped everything in America and moved to Thailand to pursue a more peaceful life. How he used the time and the new perspective to move forward from his last relationship. How Tanur is

036: Sebastian Terry - Helping People Help People

Known worldwide for pursuing an incredible list of 100 Things that he wants to achieve before he dies, Sebastian Terry's story is surprisingly not about a bucket list. It's about something more far-reaching: permission, choice, growth and connection. Affected by a curious mind and the death of a close friend, Sebastian experienced a moment in his life where he asked himself a simple question: 'Am I happy?'. The answer was NO, so he decided to pen down a list of 100 Things that he'd always wanted to achieve. Following his heart and armed with nothing but a list, Sebastian's incredible story has grown from an entertaining tale of adventure into a global philanthropic movement that engages a growing tribe of hundreds of thousands to not just set meaningful goals, but pull the trigger and achieve them - all whilst helping others do the same. "I thought initially that it would take me 100 Things to reach a state of fulfillment but it's taken me 72 things to realize that 'ticks' are just the beginning. The key to growth and happiness is finding out who you are on a primal level and then being that person, each and every day." Today 100 Things acts as a conduit, introducing those in need of help to those who are able to help. This latest evolution is called Kindsum. In this way, the journey has become less about Sebastian's list and more about the art of helping. Sebastian spends his time traveling the world connecting strangers to help each other. Turned into a best selling book ('100 Things'), an ESPN documentary ('100 things to do before you die') and most recently a US-based reality TV show ('100 Things') where Sebastian travels the world helping complete strangers achieve their specific dreams, 100 Things inspires people and organizations to gain perspective, think big and be the best they can be on every level so that others can follow suit. From marrying a stranger in Las Vegas, delivering a baby in Canada and even representing the Mauritian national rugby team at the African Championships (they won!), Sebastian's most profound moment was when he was first contacted by a suicidal stranger who needed help. 100 Things is no longer about one person, it's about everybody. Guaranteed to make you laugh, cry and inspire motivation, the 100 Things keynote is like no other and will re-engage, connect and inspire your organization to move forward as one. You can follow him on his journey through Facebook at @whatsonyourlist and Instagram at @seb100things Listen as we talk about: Why the greatest thing he's ever done has been helping someone else His thought process to leave everything behind in pursuit of his list The wonderful serendipity that has come into his life from fully pursuing his list Why he never makes pursuing money a priority Why the first step to enhancing your life is getting clarity with where you are now How to learn your way into stepping into opportunities successfully How to feel entirely empowered and in control of your life How surfing allows him to step away from the intensity of pursuing your purpose Why we're all just seeking connection Why he thinks you live a better life by helping people instead of ticking things off your list Resources mentioned: ESPN's: "THE LIST" Goalcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbOobNDcukE&t=66s http://100things.com.au/seb/the-100-things-list Sign up or hear more about our Path to Purpose course via [email protected] Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... **Why PoP Series - Ep. 5 - Growing in Gratitude**

In today's final Why PoP episode I discuss how I use gratitude to create an infectious optimism that spurs me into bold actions which allow me to live the life I was meant to. I started People of Purpose out of my appreciation for a second chance at life. In the episode I discuss how I analyzed my inner gifts lying on the mountainside in 2011 what I've done and continue to do to capitalize on that gift. I reflect on how gratitude for my special gifts has continually driven me to do my best to lift up others to their greater potential. I started by asking questions, teaching my answers, and blogging for greater understanding. Now I host an international podcast and coach others into their personal paths of purpose. I believe gratitude is the foundation for anything you are trying to accomplish in serving your purpose. Make sure you listen to this essential component of coming into your purpose and let me know what resonates on our Facebook and Instagram pages @peopleofpurposepodcast. 030: Russ Rausch — Mental Performance Trainer - Making the Present Primary, Connecting to internal Purpose, and Improving Life Experience through Vision Pursue

Russ is one of six children born and raised in rural Kansas. He was the first in his family to go to college. He graduated with honors in accounting and went to work for one of the big accounting firms. He married 3 years out of school. He was then self-employed for several years. Russ moved to Chicago and joined the trading software firm, Trading Technologies in 1998. He was part of the executive team that took them from a 20-person startup to a successful 650-person global company. He served TT as CFO, CIO, Head of Global Support and EVP of Global Buyside Sales. Despite the success that TT enjoyed and having a great family of six, he found myself increasingly dissatisfied with work and life. He often found himself wondering "what's the point of doing all of this work if it doesn't feel any better that this?" In 2011 Russ became the Chief Operating Officer of the hedge fund Emil van Essen thinking a new and more prestigious job would make him feel better. However, it only made me feel worse. In 2012 he read a book that made him believe that his dissatisfaction was the result of an internal and not an external problem. In other words it was based on how his mind was working or experiencing the external world. This was the initial spark for Russ's company Vision Pursue, or VP. After years of studying and applying areas of neuroscience and psychology, Russ changed the way he was experiencing the world. He then started working on a process to help others make this transformation. This evolved into an in-person training and app that is VP. Three other partners have joined Russ and together they've built VP. The VP team has been doing it full-time for the last 3 years and has a good client base of companies and sports teams. Vision Pursue has recently started working on its consumer program through their app. Listen as we talk about: What he thought happiness was and how that's different now How a book shifted his sense of purpose to be internal Why we experience displeasure or escape 80% of our day and why Russ can change that Why the passive approach to progress makes the opposite happen The value in enjoying the journey Why professional athletes are just like you and me Why results are more likely to come with purpose Why any transformation must start with experience Scientific explanations that will make you think about your feelings differently How to influence your systems of the mind to alter your patterns What is SEE and how it makes us more aware Why we must get our expectations in line with the way the world is The Vision Pursue program and the details of the mobile app My top recommendation for Russ as requested by him Resources Mentioned: Article about his work in the NFL Russ's website - visionpursue.com Vision Pursue App - Apple and Android stores John Wooden quotes The work of Dan Quinn, Scott Service , and Andre Coleman dharma.org - directory for 10 day meditation course How to Contact Russ: [email protected] Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... ***Special Episode - Attending Sadhguru Inner Engineering Course ***

I recently attended Sadhguru's Two-day Inner Engineering Course here in San Francisco. The course provides tools and solutions to empower yourself to create your life the way you want it. The course gives you the opportunity to intellectually explore the basics of life using methods that are from the distilled essence of yogic sciences. The course imparts practical wisdom to manage your body, mind, emotions, and the fundamental life energy within. In preparation for the course a took a 7-part, 10 hour online course. This episode is my reflections two days after the experience. I hope you'll open up to receive this powerful wisdom that has the power to transform your life. The course was a rare opportunity to be taught by Sadhguru. Sadhguru is often described as a contemporary spiritual leader, since he belongs to no particular tradition and incorporates aspects of yogic sciences that are most relevant for modern-day life into his teachings and practices. His scientific methods for self-transformation have universal appeal. Sadhguru's insights into the mechanisms of life are an outcome of his profound experience of the Self, and serve as a guide to exploring the deeper dimensions of life. His life and work serve as reminders that the inner science of yoga is not esoteric philosophy from an outdated past, but is absolutely relevant and applicable to our lives today. Sadhguru has dedicated himself to the elevation of the physical, mental, and spiritual well-being of all people. He is an author and opinion maker who is regularly invited to speak at leading international forums. He has spoken at many prestigious global conferences such as World Peace Summit at the United Nations and the World Economic Forum. 029: Marco Gonzalez - Bringing Consciousness of Genocides in Broad Daylight so the Next Generation Can Become Positive and Optimistic Actors for Change

Marco Gonzalez, is the director of Yahad-In Unum ("Together In One"), is a Paris-based non-profit organization dedicated to discovering genocidal practices wherever they are found around the world, providing documented proof of crimes against humanity, and a leading voice of protest on behalf of all past and present victims of mass murder. In accord with its original mission, Yahad – In Unum unveiled the lost history of World War II, the so-called "Holocaust by Bullets" in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Yahad – In Unum pioneered a proprietary application of modern forensic research to uncover the killings of more than 2.5 million Jews and Roma and the location of more than 2,300 mass murder sites, while interviewing more than 5,700 witness testimonies on the war crimes of the Nazi Death Squads. They are in a race against time because realistically, no more than 3 years remain to capture the eyewitness accounts of living witnesses and locate the remaining mass killing sites before all living testimony is silenced forever. Marco's work with YIU also has a deep personal resonance. Growing up in Guatemala, he was keenly aware of the abysmal human rights record in that region, especially the systematic mass killings perpetrated by the military dictatorships of an estimated 200,000 ethnic Mayans, mostly during the early 1980s. Marco's work with the organization is now allowing him to raise awareness of the Holocaust to the Guatemalan population and also the possible parallel to what his home country has experienced in the last 30 years. He helped found the first and only museum of the Holocaust in Central America. The Museum trains hundreds of educators each year in a state-supported curriculum that examines the "Holocaust by Bullets" with more than 50,000 students having visited the Museum so far. In 2017, the Museum was nominated by The Leading Cultural Destination (LCD) Awards for "Best New Museum of the Year – South/Central America" In November of 2017, Marco was instrumental in launching Yahad-In Unum's "Holocaust by Bullets"- Enhanced Teacher Training seminar to over 50 current and future educators in Denver Colorado. The program is designed to equip educators with the tools and resources to teach the recently discovered history of WWII. In 2018, the program was customized for museum professionals during a weeklong program for over 130 museum guides and staff members of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland. Marco is currently looking to expand the program across the US. Listen as we Talk about: The need to stay optimistic The importance and responsibility we have for acting for the sake of society How meeting a single person propelled him into this line of work Understanding ISIS The role reconstructing memory plays in giving people purpose How we still use the same models for genocide today as we did with the Holocaust Stories of atrocities and crimes against humanity from Marco's on the ground research Giving energy to people doing good work How media can be most effective and purposeful Why we must break the culture of silence about genocide The equation for healing The inspiration of Germany's leadership after the Holocaust Why thinking genocides are secret stops people from being responsible How genocides are happening in broad daylight The role we all play for refugees around the world How to get involved and support refugee camps in Iraq Resources Mentioned: 60-Minutes - The Hidden Holocaust 60-Minutes - Exposing the ISIS Killing Machine http://www.yahadinunum.org How to Contact Marco: https://www.facebook.com/yahadinunum/ https://twitter.com/yahadinunum Facebook.com/actionyazidis Donate here: http://www.yahadinunum.org/donate-to-yahad-in-unum/ Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... 025: Ten Teacher Residents of Purpose

This week is a one-of-a-kind episode in which I interview 10 people from my Master's of Education graduate school program. Each of us comes from different backgrounds into the same program. I thought it would be interesting to give you a glimpse of the immense sense of purpose each one is bringing into their teaching and education youth in urban, public charter schools in California. The cohort is as diverse as the students we serve and I am impressed with how passionate, caring, and conscientious each of my classmates is. In this interview I ask roughly four general questions answered over about five minutes. Those questions are: 1. Whats your name where and what you'll be teaching 2. What is your purpose for doing this program? 3. What kind of teacher do you hope to become? 4. How will your background and story Come into your teaching? The model of this program is called a Teacher Residency. We spend a year in an accelerated Master's degree program through the Alder Graduate School of Education, while we co-teach alongside a Mentor Teacher at a school-site. I'm doing my program through KIPP Bay Area Schools- a free- public charter school network open to all students while others in the program are doing their teaching training through Aspire Public Schools and Caliber Schools - both also free, public charter schools. 022: Simone and Malcolm Collins -- Pragmatists of Purpose - Guiding Others to Create Their Own Answers to Life's Biggest Questions

Simone and Malcolm Collins are co-authors of the book The Pragmatist's Guide To Life: A Guide to Creating Your Own Answers to Life's Biggest Questions. Their book is a ruthlessly pragmatic guide to creating your own answers to life's biggest questions. Each of this book's four chapters covers one of the most important questions a person must ask themselves: Rather than give you answers to these questions, this guide provides a framework that helps you develop your own answers while equipping you with the neuroscientific tools necessary to transform yourself into whomever you choose to be. What is the purpose of my life? How can I best realize the purpose of my life? Who do I want to be? How do I want other people to think of me? The book was created as the work of a nonprofit institution (http://pragmatist.guide/), dedicated to helping people think through the big questions in life without leading them to a specific answer. All proceeds from the sale of the book go to the nonprofit, and not the authors Originally a neuroscientist focused on brain-computer interface and the evolution of human cognition (his work is on display at the Smithsonian), Malcolm Collins felt he could learn more about the way humans interact with the world and each other by pursuing an MBA at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. There he met Simone, his wife and co-author, who at the time was Director of Marketing at HubPages.com, managing a team of 20,000 freelancers. Together they co-founded the art commission marketplace ArtCorgi.com, after which Malcolm became Director of Strategy at South Korea's most desired source of early-stage VC capital and Simone earned her graduate degree from Cambridge while working in VC. The couple now runs a number of travel companies (with a focus on Travelmax), splitting their time between North American headquarters in Miami, FL and South American offices in Lima, Peru. Listen as we talk about: What it's like to find purpose Why the question of playing video games or studying for a test propelled Malcom into his quest for purpose Am I really my future self? How human consciousness has shifted over the course of evolution and has prevented us from fully thinking through our personal purpose How a statistical and scientific approach can manufacture love Why they choose to apply thinking and rationality to purpose above other paradigms An important question to ask yourself that may change the way you question and construct your worldview Why they look for people and communities that they find offensive How a nail salon turned into a guide and into a book How they believe after school programs can help kids check their beliefs Why they chose prestigious schools Why they have to care what people think of them to fulfill their objective functions Why it's important to create a caricature of yourself Why relationships can bring you to purpose How marriage is a force multiplier that fulfills their collective purpose The three types of friends that help us achieve our objective function How they can help you get cheap international trips --------------Resources Mentioned: --------------------- The Pragmatist's Guide to Life: A Guide to Creating Your Own Answers to Life's Biggest Questions - Simone & Malcolm Collins The Red Pill- documentary about a feminist's journey into the Men's Rights Movement The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists - Neil Strauss Less Wrong Community - a community blog focused on "refining the art of human rationality" https://travelmax.com/ - Their wholesale travel website for booking complex international trips Email travelmax@ceo to work with Malcolm on booking cheap international travel Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... 021: Darrin & Olivier Crusoe -- Returning to Nature with OrganiKH Farm

Darrin and Olivier live in rural Cambodia where they have started an organic farming project called OrganiKH in Darrin's home village of Sveychek. Darrin has a remarkable story of being driven out of her hometown due to the Khmer Rouge's repressive regime in the early 90's. Struggling to make a livelihood, her family sent her to Thailand on her own when she was 13. By the time she came back to Cambodia in her early 20's she met Olivier, a french backpacker in search of his purpose. Olivier became disillusioned with the "rich" life in Nice, France where he was a bartender who had all the material possessions he could ever want. After a short trip to the islands in Southeast Asia he was hooked to the culture. He sold everything and packed up and left in search of what was next. After several months of travel him and Darrin decided to open a bungalow guest house on the southern coast of Cambodia. They had two children there and eventually moved to Koh Yao, Thailand where Olivier was a hotel manager and Darrin, the resort's head chef. As they found their purpose, they both decided that it was time to commit to their dream of starting their own farm in Darrin's hometown as a way to make a sustainable life for their family and with the environment. Now three years into the project they have built an impressive farm with mud-brick living quarters, thatched roofing, composting, and dozens of crops grown 100% organically. They host volunteers from all over the world who help on the farm and have even homeschooled their kids. They speak four languages fluently and have dreams to grow their farming project into a local learning center and cooperative for the surrounding farmers and people to visit and share in its mission. We conducted our interview on my third visit to the farm. When I first came in October of 2015 I met a community of volunteers from all over the world who enjoyed rich discussions on environmental sustainability, long term travel experiences, and philosophies of living over delicious organic and local meals. We played games, shared skills, and had tons of laughs. I lived in a shared bungalow waking up with the sun and enjoyed working with my hands in the soil planting seeds, making garden beds, building infrastructure from the mud and straw of the land. We'd take afternoon breaks of 3-4 hours when we'd get out of the sun. I loved hammocking and reading books, journaling, and napping. It was a constant adventure swimming in the pond with their two children, playing soccer, and even eating my first bug of my life. In those first ten days I had found my version of utopia. I have since been back twice more and its growing wonderfully. I hope you get a taste of what it's like to hangout with these people of Purpose. I hope this peaceful outdoor interview with Olivier and Darrin plants the seed for you to volunteer on an organic farming project of your own and one day visit this project in Cambodia. Listen as we talk about: Why they started an organic farming project in Cambodia How Olivier left a life of riches bartending on the beach in France to pursue purpose How Darin escaped a genocide to change countries and live on her own at age 13 The hilarious story of how they first met Why they owned a guest house on a resort island in Cambodia and why they sold it What it's like to raise children in paradise environments constantly shared by others Why self reliance is an important aim to have The motivation behind why they work on a local level Some resources for you to get started with a farming project of your own.
