S7 Ep 14Part 96 - Dr. Paul Saladino on PUFAs, Insulin Resistance, Visceral Fat, and Longevity
Hey hey everybody, hope you're ready for another information dense episode. We have Dr. Paul Saladino back on to dive deep on how insulin resistance develops. This is a perfect follow up to Dr. Ben Bikman on the last episode explaining to us how insulin resistance and other problems with insulin are the root cause to almost all chronic disease. It's also a great follow up to the many guests who have been talking about the dangers of industrial seed oils, euphemistically known as vegetable oils, and high levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids also known as PUFAs in our diet. I was thinking about this after we finished recording and thought I could have made a few more points and perhaps made this analogy. Maybe the disease process is like a hammer and a nail. You need both to create something. Either on their own might not be enough. Refined sugars and refined grains would be the hammer and the high PUFAs are the nail. Either one doesn't cause insulin resistance on its own. There's examples of populations eating high carb but not getting insulin resistance (although most of this is whole food carbs). But these people aren't getting a ton of seed oils (possibly zero) in their diet. And there also are examples of people potentially consuming a high amount of PUFAs (like one of the Blue Zones here in the Los Angeles area, Loma Linda) where they avoid a lot of animal products and presumably use vegetable oils as the guidelines dictate. These people have many other great lifestyle factors and remain thin over their life and they tend to have a disproportionate amount of centenarians. They do all the healthy behaviors to remain thin like avoiding sugars, processed foods, alcohol, and staying active. So basically these people never overstuff their fat cells and start the process of insulin resistance that maybe the high PUFAs would have then been there to cause the real damage. If you have all the other bases covered maybe you can get away with more PUFAs in your diet. There's some epidemiology that suggests this as well. I'm not saying this is ideal at all, and likely it's best to reduce seed oils as much as possible. I also am just theororizing here. It's interesting to think about the many factors that play into this complex process nobody has definitively solved because there always seems to be some counter-evidence to every theory and I want to take it all into consideration and not just blame things on a single villain. Please listen to this episode and let me know what you think. I'm on all major social media platforms if you search "food lies" and try to message everyone I can back. Before we jump in I'll do my new thing of mentioning my conflicts of interest. I believe I have none because I take no outside funding or advertising dollars for any products. I do have a company called Nose to Tail that you can find at http://NoseToTail.org where we deliver grass fed and grass finished beef and buffalo and high omega 3 and low omega 6 chicken and pork to your door. This is all raised here in America and not brought in from Australia or New Zealand like some other companies. I also am partnered with doctor Gary here in Los Angeles where we have a program to reverse and treat chronic disease and obesity. We see patients in clinic at Evolve Healthcare and online as well. You can find out more at http://Sapien.org or http://sapienprogram.com For those who are a little further down the healing road and want to connect with other like minded individuals and thrive instead of just survive, we have the Sapien Tribe. There's a bunch of extra features you get there like the exclusive videos, extended show notes, Zoom calls with Dr. Gary and I where you can get your health questions answered, the private feed area, and more. You can check some of it out for free at http://tribe.sapien.org We are running out of our special lifetime membership offers - they're more than half gone. Get in today and be part of the tribe for life. You also get the bonus episodes of this podcast. Today in this bonus episode I talked to Paul about the coca-cola funded lobbying and real conflicts of interest, the calorie in - calorie out equation, and what other things factor into the equation besides food. Joining the Tribe is really a win-win for all parties. Members get a whole bunch of perks and features and it also makes all the content creation possible on our end. Go to http://Sapien.org and find out about all these things I mentioned. Without further ado, here's Paul. S7 Ep 13Part 95 - Dr. Ben Bikman on The Root Cause of Chronic Disease and What to Do About It
Hello everyone! Welcome back. Today we have everyone's favorite Dr. Ben Bikman for another engaging discussion. My name is Brian Sanders and I'm creating the Food Lies film which we're actively working on daily. I've been doing social media, youtube videos, and podcasts over the last 3 years as we've produced the film. I'm on a mission to spread health knowledge since I lost both of my parents about 6 years ago. Now I'll act like I'm giving a presentation at a scientific conference and give my disclosures - I take no money from any company, organization, or industry. I support myself with my business partner Dr. Gary treating patients with diet and lifestyle and getting them off of medications with the Sapien Program. Also with my company http://NoseToTail.org I started after finding out the true health of animal foods that are grass fed and finished, organic, ethically and sustainably raised. We sell grass fed and finished meat from our farm in Texas to the 48 contiguous US states. That's at http://NoseToTail.org With the Peak Human patreon where people throw in a few bucks to support the content production and keep me from taking on advertisers. And the Sapien Tribe where members get extra content, materials, and interaction with myself, health Coach Becker, and Dr. Gary. THe program and Tribe can be found at http://sapien.org And also with Grass Fed nose to tail products that we'll be releasing soon. Follow Food Lies on social media or join our newsletter on Sapien.org to get notified when these amazing whole food products go live. You can also follow sapien.store on instagram. We're even doing grass fed beef tallow all natural body care products. I'm excited to announce all of these soon! So instead of taking a dime from any product or advertiser or worse, I've developed my own products I am creating in small batches with the highest quality ingredients. Products that I believe in and across the board benefit people's life and health. If you choose to buy these, then great. If not, that's completely ok and I hope you'll find local farmers and artisans to purchase quality goods from. About this episode today. Ben Bikman has a Ph.D in Bioenergetics and a Masters in Exercise Physiology. He is currently an Associate Professor of Physiology and Developmental Biology at BYU. His lab research (Laboratory of Obesity and Metabolism) focuses on what molecular mechanisms mediate and cause metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. He is especially well versed in how insulin and ketones work as key drivers of metabolic function. He regularly publishes his research in peer-review journals and presents at international science meetings. His new book is called Why We Get Sick and I'd recommend it to everyone. It gets at the root of almost all modern chronic disease - insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia. We talk today about this at great length. He can speak on so many other things as well, which he did in the my first episode with him Peak Human #57. I highly recommend people going back and starting with that one, it's one of the most popular episodes of all time. While you're at it you might as well listen to all the other episodes starting from the beginning. This is how people are changing their life just by walking around listening to free info I've carefully curated. Anyway, please enjoy this episode with Dr. Ben Bikman and join the Spaien Tribe at http://Sapien.org to get the exclusive bonus part of this episode where we discuss the ultimate longevity diet. So happy to get the great Doc Bikman to weigh in on this. S7 Ep 12Part 94 - Rob Tuncks on Plant Foods Causing More Deaths, Why Are We Told to Eat 80% Plant Foods, and Is It Possible to Feed the World?
Food/population graph mentioned in the episode: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kqqlf9jjqrwjnie/food_population.jpg?dl=0 Hello my friends, we're back at it with another super interesting episode. I'm Brian Sanders and I'm creating the much anticipated Food Lies film. You can follow along with the progress as well as get daily valuable content on the latest health info, pertinent studies, nutrition news, and my diagrams and graphics making sense of the complicated and conflicting world of nutrition. You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook and join the now 100K people who are staying tuned into the latest and greatest info. Just search any of those platforms for "Food Lies" and you'll find me. Today I'm talking to Rob Tuncks who's an Australian farmer and former telecommunication company owner. He sold his business, retired at 30, and now produces grass fed lamb as well as other plant and animal food products. He has very insightful experiences with food systems and the morals we have placed upon them because he has experience growing both plant and animal foods he is acutely aware of the vast amount of deaths required to grow the staple crops so much of the world relies on. He also studies food systems on a world scale to investigate the enormous caloric need to feed 7.7 billion people and how we can accomplish that. We've been talking for many months about some of these issues and I think there's so many challenging and important questions that need to be answered here. Some of his views are a bit hard to swallow. Some are necessary to acknowledge and address. Some make our broken food system make much more sense. He also could very well be wrong about some of these things. I think there's some great solutions using holistic farming methods using plants and animals together. Humans are pretty intelligent and adaptable when we have to be. Instead of my usual announcements, I'm just going to encourage people to go to http://sapien.org to discover all the great things we have going on. No matter where you are on your health journey, we have resources and free things to help you on your way. We also have a link there for the Nose to Tail grass fed and finished meat. This is my company, I'm not promoting someone else's service. Everything we're doing at Sapien and Nose to Tail is created by us and for the specific purpose of getting humans healthier. We have the Tribe there with the special features, the Sapien Program, and more info about the Food Lies film as well. Just go to http://sapien.org and get everything there. I want to thank the community for being great and pushing this all forward. I love hearing your stories of success, so keep sending them in. Keep sharing this podcast and writing the reviews. And keep up your healthy living. Let's grow old together. Enough out of me, please enjoy this interesting interview with my Australian pal, Rob Tuncks. Hey everyone, welcome back. I have a great one this week. Dr. Mindy and I had a really fun discussion while she also dispensed a lot of useful info. We covered the science and benefits of fasting in great detail along with all kinds of tips and tricks for pulling short and long fasts off successfully. We also talk about how healthy periods of time spent not eating are. This should not be considered fasting - it should just be normal. What's not normal is eating from when you wake up until you go to sleep. We covered a lot on the gut microbiome and immune health as well. You're going to love her. Dr. Mindy Pelz is empowering people all over the world to believe in their body's own healing abilities through fasting, diet variation, removing chemicals from the body, and so much more. Dr. Mindy is a recognized leader in the alternative health world and is the founder of Family Life Wellness, her local clinic that is made to speed up healing and maximize performance. S7 Ep 10Part 92 - Glenn Livingston, PhD on Binge Eating, the Reptilian Brain, and Mastering Your Relationship with Food
Hi friends, thanks for joining me for another episode of Peak Human, I'm Brian Sanders and I'm creating the much anticipated Food Lies film. You can follow along with the progress as well as get daily valuable content on the latest health info, pertinent studies, nutrition news, and my diagrams and graphics making sense of the complicated and conflicting world of nutrition. Which really should be quite simple if we used some common sense, knowledge of human evolution and our ancestors, and meld that with the new science that's coming out daily. You can find me on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook and join the now 100K people who are staying tuned into the latest and greatest info. Just search any of those platforms for "Food Lies" and you'll find me. Today I'm talking to Dr. Glenn Livingston who's a clinical psychologist, food addiction specialist, and even worked for the food industry for many years giving him an inside look at their shady practices. He was the long time CEO of a multi-million dollar consulting firm which has serviced several Fortune 500 clients in the food industry. You may have seen his (or his company's) previous work, theories, and research in major periodicals like The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Sun Times, and many other major media outlets You may also have heard him on ABC, WGN, and/or CBS radio. Disillusioned by what traditional psychology had to offer overweight and/or food obsessed individuals, Dr. Livingston spent several decades researching the nature of bingeing and overeating via work with his own patients AND a self-funded research program with more than 40,000 participants. Most important, however, was his own personal journey out of obesity and food prison to a normal, healthy weight and a much more lighthearted relationship with food. I really enjoyed this conversation because I've had countless guests covering what we should eat and why, but there's an entirely other side of the story that's rarely addressed: what happens when you have all the right knowledge but eat the wrong foods or go on binges anyway? This really may be half the battle (or more) for a lot of people. Please make sure to listen carefully to this one as there's a lot of practical and actionable info he gives out. If you'd like more help with what to eat, why, and maybe most importantly how to stick to the plan, please look into our new Sapien Program at http://Sapien.org we've got our program led by Dr. Gary and our lead health coach and myself that will help change your life. We've got your back. You can get the free Sapien Food Guide there if you just want to get started on your own. We also have some lifetime memberships left for the Sapien Tribe. There's a lot of exclusive perks for our members including our zoom calls with Dr. Gary, Coach Becker, and myself. All of this is at http://sapien.org Lastly, we've got the grass fed and finished beef and buffalo and high omega 3 pork and chicken at http://nosetotail.org That's delivered to your door in the 48 contiguous states. Our best selling and unique product is the Primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in. It's a great way to get the most nutrient dense and delicious meat into that body of yours. Regular ground beef tastes watered down after you've tried this stuff. That's at http://nosetotail.org Let's get onto the show. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for reviewing it on the podcast app. And most of all, thanks for listening and being healthy and awesome people. I love interacting with everyone on Instagram and social media and there really is something special about the community we're creating together. Hope everyone enjoys this one with Dr. Glenn. S7 Ep 9Part 91 - Briana Pobiner, PhD on Meat-Eating Throughout Human History
Hey there everyone, I hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend. Los Angeles tried to cancel it by closing all the beaches, the one place that would assumably be safe to spend some time outdoors with friends and family and soak up some vitamin D, so I spent some time in beautiful San Diego where people enjoyed the independence and freedom America fought for. Today I'm talking to Dr. Briana Pobiner who is a paleoanthropologist and works at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural HIstory and put together the Hall of Human Origins. Her research centers on the evolution of human diet (with a focus on meat-eating), but has included topics as diverse as chimpanzee carnivory and cannibalism in the Cook islands. She has done fieldwork in modern ecosystems, conducted excavations, and studied fossil collections in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Indonesia, and Romania and has published many scientific papers on these topics. Additionally, she serves as an Associate Research Professor of Anthropology at the George Washington University. For more info see https://naturalhistory.si.edu/staff/briana-pobiner We go through the entire history of human meat-eating starting with when we split off from our ancestors 6-7 million years ago. We even get into chimp hunting and meat-eating as well. If you are a member of the Sapien Tribe you'll get the bonus part of the episode where we cover cannibalism. Pretty wild stuff here. We still have some lifetime memberships available at a deep discount. This is funding all the content we are making at sapien.org that will only increase in the future. We are completely community powered and I'd like to keep it that way. If you are ready to lose some serious weight you can also find out about our new Sapien Program at http://sapien.org We are offering a 10 week program that will change your life. We have all the materials and information to educate you, as well as health coaches to guide you in your journey. The info is all out there, but we have done the work to make it simple and actionable and keep you accountable. We have a special price for the program for a limited time. You can find out more at http://sapien.org and grab our free Sapien Food Guide there as well. Of course there's always the grass fed and finished meat at http://nosetotail.org and you can help us out by giving this podcast a review on itunes or the podcast app and sharing it with family and friends. Like I always say, I'd strongly recommend going back and starting with episode one or working backwards to the beginning. Now please enjoy this episode with Dr. Briana Pobiner. S7 Ep 8Part 90 - Aviaja Hauptmann, PhD on Traditional Inuit Animal-Based Diets & Fighting the Plant-Based Agenda That's Killing Her People
Well hello again Sapien people. I'm really excited about this episode. I feel like I've found another gem from the far reaches of the globe. Aviaja is of Inuit descent and was born in Greenland where she continues to do her research. Her work revolves around the 98% animal-based diets of the native people there. SHe also is a public speaker and activist for the preservation of their native animal-based diet which is being jeopardized by anti-meat activists and plant-based ideals of the government recommendations. They are trying to get people to eat industrialized plant-based foods that have to be shipped into their country instead of eating their natural diet. She's a microbiologist with a Ph.D. in microbial ecology and bioinformatics. She's been researching the microbiology of Greenland and the broader Arctic through large amounts of DNA sequencing data, also called metagenomics. She's particularly interested in studying traditional Greenlandic foods eaten by the inuit. We get into all kinds of interesting topics, especially around fermented foods, which are mostly animal foods in her culture. You'll want to make sure to stick around for this entire interview. A few quick announcements - get the free Sapien Food guide on the new http://sapien.org site. It's like a cheat sheet to being healthy for life. It breaks down the Sapien principles and gives a visual guide of what to eat. You can also learn about our Sapien Program there if you're ready to make some serious changes in your life. Our program educates you on how to be healthy for life and lose weight in the process. It's backed by Dr. Gary and our health coaching team. You can join us in our clinic Evolve Healthcare in Los Angeles or anywhere in the world. That's at http://sapien.org You can also join the tribe there. This is for people who already have sorted out their health but are looking for more and to be part of the special community we're growing. We just had a private Zoom call last week where Dr. Gary and I answered member questions live. It was really great and we record these and share them to the tribe after as well. We have a limited number of lifetime memberships available at a deep discount at http://sapien.org That's it! You can always get the grass finished meat from our ranch in Texas delivered to your door at http://nosetotail.org and please share this podcast with family and friends and give it a review. S7 Ep 7Part 89 - Dr. Brian Lenzkes on The Future of Medicine, Aligning Incentives, and Fixing the Broken Healthcare (Sickcare) System
Hello everyone, we're here with another fresh episode of Peak Human, hot off the press. I've been recording these each week and posting them within a few days to make sure they're current and relevant. For those of you who are new to the show, I'm Brian Sanders and I'm creating the Food Lies film which we are trying to finish by the end of the year. We got slowed down a bit due to the current state of the world, but are actively working on it daily. I also work with an internal medicine physician, Dr. Gary Shlifer here in Los Angeles where we treat patients with diet & lifestyle instead of rushing to medications. In fact, our goal is to remove as many medications as possible which we successfully do across the board. We have just launched the Sapien Program where people can radically change their life with our physician supervised diet & lifestyle program that includes, videos, written materials, visual resources, and health coaching. You can learn more about it and get the free Sapien Food Guide at http://Sapien.org Anyone in the world can take part in this program if they are serious about losing weight and dedicating themselves to a change. We're all about making it fun, delicious, sustainable, and enjoyable. This isn't about counting calories, being hungry, or needing tons of will-power. We also have the Sapien Tribe for people who have already made diet & lifestyle changes and are looking to further their knowledge and keep themselves motivated, accountable, and up to date on new info. It's an amazing group of people that help each other grow. We also have a ton of perks like our private members area, private Zoom community meetings, extended show notes of the podcast, and unlisted video resources on meal prep and exercise routines. You can also find out about this and join at http://sapien.org Get in on the ground floor of this community and be a founding member for life with a deep discount on a lifetime membership. We are running out of these limited spots. We're building something special together. Brian Lenzkes is an internal medicine doctor in San Diego. Dr. Lenzkes received a BS in Biology from UC Irvine, and an MD from USC Medical School. He practices root cause medicine and has moved away from the standard insurance-based medical system to a Direct Primary Care model to better serve his patients. He also speaks around the country on the benefits of diet & lifestyle-based medicine. We speak today on the future of medicine. Not only does this of course rely on root cause medicine and diet & lifestyle intervention, but aligned incentives, new technology, and a collaborative model. This includes wearable technology such as CGM or continuous glucose monitors, smart blood pressure cuffs, smart scales, and more. Things will really make sense concerning our current nightmare of a healthcare system after listening to this episode.Once again please go to the new version of http://sapien.org to get the free Sapien Food Guide, learn about http://NoseToTail.org grass finished meat delivery service from our ranch in Texas, and to join the Sapien Tribe. S7 Ep 6Part 88 - Dr. Phil Maffetone on the Overfat Pandemic, Improving Your Immune System, and the Benefits of Running on Fat
Hello again beautiful people! I hope everyone is doing well. Since I can't ask how you're doing, I'll just skip straight to myself. S7 Ep 5Part 87 - Dr. Bill Schindler on Meat & Human Evolution, Should Humans Eat Dairy or Grains, and the Real Story of Food Processing
Hello everyone, welcome back. I've been getting a lot of questions on dairy, grains, food processing, and what humans evolved to eat. This is a very nuanced topic so I wanted to do a thorough podcast with probably the best person in the world to speak on this, Dr. Bill Schindler. We frame this whole conversation around a recent New York Times opinion piece called "The end of meat is here" https://www.nytimes.com/2020/05/21/opinion/coronavirus-meat-vegetarianism.html This is an absurd article that uses the coronavirus era we're in as a way to propose that the human race should not eat meat anymore. It's a strange notion that we'd stop eating the most important food in human history, a super food that literally made us human. I usually wouldn't pay much attention to such a thing, but it was a good way to frame our discussion and expose all the errors the author made. It's always fun to debunk these type of things but there's not always time for each and every one that keeps popping up. This episode should also go a long way to clear up many aspects of meat-eating and a proper human (or should I say Sapien) diet. Dr. Bill Schindler is the director of the Eastern Shore Food Lab at Washington College where he is also an associate professor of archaeology and anthropology. Two years ago he co-hosted the National Geographic show The Great Human Race. He spent a year abroad recently continuing his hands-on research and professional development by immersing himself and his family with indigenous and traditional groups around the world to learn about their food and diets. As an experimental archaeologist and primitive technologist his specialties are in recreating technologies of the past to better interpret our ancestral diets. His current focus is learning how to translate the outcomes of that research into something meaningful for modern day diet and health and is working to fuse lessons from our ancestral dietary past with modern culinary arts to create a food system that is relevant, accessible and meaningful to modern Western life. Stay tuned for the Sapien Tribe bonus podcast with Dr. Bill if you are a Sapien Tribe member. If you aren't a member yet, we have a limited time offer for a lifetime membership at a steeply discounted rate. You can do this at http://Sapien.org We're giving a whole bunch of exclusive content and special features to members of the Tribe. It's going to be a much more comprehensive version of the Patreon. S7 Ep 4Part 86 - Cate Shanahan, MD on Unlocking Your Body's Fat Burning Potential, Sinister Seed Oils, and Corona Thoughts
Hey, hey! How's everyone doing? We're living in some strange times. I really hope we find a way to end racism in the US and the world and I hope justice is served for that horrible police officer. I'm here in LA and just tried to go to the post office and found that it was closed and storefronts in the Venice / Marina Del Rey area were being boarded up. We all got messages to our phones saying a curfew would be enforced at 5pm. My friend got beat up in Santa Monica for trying to stop looters. I don't know why he was trying to do this, but it looked pretty scary. Violence is not the answer. I hope everyone stays safe and we make some changes in our society towards true equality. Today we have Dr. Cate Shanahan back on the show. There's a few great people who have made it on twice. Dr. Ted Naiman, Ivor Cummins, Dr. Paul Saladino, and I'm talking to Dr. Bill Schindler again tomorrow. Please go back and catch these awesome repeat guests, as well as all the other great episodes in the back catalogue. For those who don't know of Dr. Cate she was just on Bill Maher's show Real Time where she talked about ancestral nutrition, avoiding seed oils, running on fat, and staying healthy as the number one goal during the time of coronavirus. It was such a treat to hear someone from our health community make it to the mainstream. Bill seemed to support her message 100% and didn't even start with his plant-heavy leaning ideas. I was just so excited to see her spreading these messages I wanted to have her back on. I also have been reading her new book The Fatburn Fix and am thoroughly enjoying it. She goes into a lot of interesting details of her new information in this episode. Don't forget to get your orders in for Nose to Tail this week. If you haven't heard about it yet, all the info is on http://NoseToTail.org We ship out grass fed, grass finished, beyond organic beef, buffalo, and high omega-3 and low omega-6 pork and chicken. It's from our small ranch in Texas and shipped out to the 48 contiguous US states. We have all kinds of organs mixed into ground meat products, the bones, sausages, even beef jerky and beef sticks. S7 Ep 3Part 85 - Stu Philips, PhD on How to Lose Fat While Gaining Muscle, How Much Protein to Eat, and Busting Protein Myths
Welcome back, everyone! I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend and got a chance to soak up some sun, get some vitamin D, see friends and family, and eat some glorious meats. I know I did. If you're new to this podcast, I'm Brian Sanders and I'm making a film called Food Lies that goes to the beginning of human history to find out what we should be eating. We go through all the bad science that has led us astray, the new science that vindicates ancestral eating, and we even get into how we can eat meat in a not only sustainable way, but one that it is regenerative to the environment. All of these topics have been covered in the now 84 episodes of this podcast, so please start back at episode 1. Today I'm talking to Professor Stu Phillips who is one of the world's leading authorities on protein and muscle science. He shares vital information in this interview on long term health, short term health such as fat loss and muscle gain, as well as combating the multitude of protein myths out there. Professor Phillips is the director of the Physical Activity Centre of Excellence (PACE), director of the McMaster Centre for Nutrition, Exercise, and Health Research, and a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Skeletal Muscle Health in Aging. In addition to being a full Professor in Kinesiology, also Graduate Faculty in the School of Medicine at McMaster University. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (FCAHS), American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the American College of Nutrition (ACN). His research is focused on the impact of nutrition and exercise on the mechanisms of human skeletal muscle protein turnover. He is also keenly interested in diet- and exercise-induced changes in body composition particularly in older persons. While we're on the topic of protein we all know the best sources are from grass finished, well-raised animals. Luckily that's what we specialize in at http://NoseToTail.org that's a little typographical humor for you there. You can get our extra-nutritious meat from our family farm in Texas delivered to your door as long as you're in the 48 contiguous United States. Our signature product is the Primal ground beef which includes liver, heart, kidney, and spleen, all without the hassle of incorporating them yourself. It also tastes great. I like to add a little seasoning to mine, but even if you don't, it just tastes like a richer beef flavor. We have boxes that include a variety of cuts including the primal beef, sausage, beef bacon, and our premium boxes include bone meal for calcium (which you can add into the ground beef or use in bone broth), sardines (for more calcium and magnesium, among other things), and whole cod liver pieces in cod liver oil for vitamin A, D, and others. This is the full nutrient spectrum here! You even get marrow bones. Check out our great meats that are also great for the land at http://NoseToTail.org while supplies last. S7 Ep 1Part 83 - Ivor Cummins on Vitamin D, the Immune System, Severe COVID Cases, and Locking People in Their Homes
Hey there friends, hope everyone is well. I'm on a vitamin D roll over here with another great guest talking about how it is a central part of almost every system in our body, including (and maybe most importantly these days) our immune system. Again I want to stress that D is not a vitamin, but a pre-hormone. I know talking about vitamins can make many people's eyes glaze over. I am kind of one of these people actually. I think we can get all the vitamins and minerals we need from the food we eat and if we're eating an ancestral, nutrient dense diet then we don't need to supplement or worry about this kind of thing. But vitamin D is different. Just like our bodies expect ancestral foods, we also expect an ancestral environment. Humans lived outdoors for all of history. Is it surprising at all that when we live and work indoors for the vast majority of the day this might not be ideal? This interview also covers the link between vitamin D and the coronavirus. This is very striking and we go into even more studies and correlations on this. Tying this all together, we get into the efficacy of the lockdown. Ivor has been tracking this data for the last couple months. Nobody is minimizing the tragic deaths or saying the lockdown didn't help in many ways, but maybe there is a smarter way to do "smart distancing" instead of blanket mandates for everyone in the country. Maybe forcing people to be locked in their homes might actually weaken their immune system. Maybe it would have been better for people to get sunlight and vitamin D this entire time considering we have good data showing the virus isn't really transmitted outdoors. Maybe there are many unintended deaths from these lockdown measures. Maybe there was a different way to go about things once we initially reacted. These are all interesting questions and it's great to live in the United States where you are free to ask these questions. Ivor Cummins BE(Chem) CEng MIEI PMP completed a Biochemical Engineering degree in 1990. He has since spent over 25 years in corporate technical leadership and management positions. His career specialty has been leading large worldwide teams in complex problem-solving activity. Since 2012 Ivor has been intensively researching the root causes of modern chronic disease. A particular focus has been on cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. He shares his research insights at public speaking engagements around the world, revealing the key nutritional and lifestyle interventions which will deliver excellent health and personal productivity. He has recently presented on heart disease primary root causes at the British Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (BACPR). He has also debated Irish Professors of Medicine on stage, at the annual conference of the Irish National Institute of Preventive Cardiology (NIPC). Before we start I'll just mention a few other things. If you're new to this podcast I'd start at episode 1. It's best to experience the whole journey and soak up the valuable information from each hand-picked guest. You also should know about http://NoseToTail.org where we deliver grass finished, sustainably raised beef, buffalo, lamb as well as our one-of-a-kind high omega 3 pork and chicken. This is special stuff that is not only beyond organic and humanely raised, but is fed a special diet so that the meat has an extremely high omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. It's in high demand so we can only sell the bacon 1 package at a time. Our other signature product is the primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed. Very tasty stuff. I've seen and heard of so many kids chowing down on this stuff and enjoying it immensely. They don't mind the organ taste at all and I think have an intuitive sense for the superior nutrition it provides. S6 Ep 16Part 82 - Dr. Joel Gould on Vitamin D, Sunlight, the Immune System, and Coronavirus
Hello, hello! What a beautiful day it is to be alive and well. I hope everyone is getting outside and getting some sun each day if they live someplace where that is possible. If not, at least getting outdoors and getting some exercise will have a ton of other benefits. Today's podcast is all about vitamin D and how it relates to human health and the immune system. Living a healthy lifestyle, avoiding metabolic disease, eating nutrient dense animal foods, and getting responsible sunlight all play into your vitamin D status. Even some supplementation can be sometimes very necessary and beneficial. I posted another great study out of Indonesia on the correlations between vitamin D status and deaths from COVID-19. They are very striking and everyone should check them out on social media on my Food Lies accounts. Just search for "Food Lies" on any platform. I've been talking to Joel about this vitamin D stuff for about a year now and have been tracking it over the past 6 weeks during the Coronavirus pandemic. We've been trading information and it was good to see that some good data has finally been coming out. I kept mentioning getting outside and getting sun exposure but didn't want to post anything definitive until the science was clear. I think we're getting to that point now with multiple studies from multiple countries. Even Dr. Gary has been reporting extremely low levels in all his patients who are having bad cases of COVID. I'd also like to point out that the logo for my company Sapien is a sun. I couldn't think of a better representation of everything that represents healthy humans. Dr. Joel Gould is a dentist with 30 years of experience in Canada and the United States. He is on the forefront of revolutionizing modern dental approaches by furthering his knowledge on science, technology, and the human body. He has been featured for his innovative work on network TV such FOX, NBC, ABC, and CBS. He launched His unique "Sleep Restoration" program in 2016, focusing on organic, non pharmaceutical solutions for insomnia and sleep apnea. S6 Ep 15Part 81 - Dr. Michael Eades on What Humans Evolved to Eat & What Happens When You Stray From That
Welcome back everyone! Thanks for tuning in and I hope you are putting your health first during this time. In case anyone is wondering, I'm working on the Food Lies film daily and we're still trying to get it out in the fall right when everything is hopefully back to normal. You can still preorder a copy on Indiegogo and also get great extras like the special features or the Eat Meat shirt. That's on http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post and search for Food Lies Post or click through http://FoodLies.org Today Dr. Mike Eades joins me for a really great and comprehensive interview. I've been following his work for many years and always enjoy his presentations that can be found on YouTube. We got to hang out all weekend in Denver a little ways back and I got to see another of his amazing presentations live talking about what humans evolved to eat and what happened as we strayed away from that diet. It's shocking stuff and sure to ruffle the feathers of every single mainstream doctor, dietitian, and nutritionist around. We go over this and much of his other work in this interesting episode. Dr. Michael Eades is a physician and the author of 10 books in the fields of health, nutrition, and exercise over the last several decades––among them the New York Times best seller Protein Power and The Protein Power LifePlan which laid out one of the first nutritional concepts of the paleo lifestyle. Since 1986 Dr. Eades has been in full time practice of bariatric, nutritional, and metabolic medicine. S6 Ep 14Part 80 - Dr. Nadir Ali on Why Plant Sterols Are Bad, LDL Can Be Good, and ApoE4 Does Not Mean You'll Get Alzheimer's
Hello, hello my healthy friends! Here's some news for you - I don't have Sars-CoV-2. I did the antibody test at Evolve Healthcare with Dr. Gary who co-founded Sapien with me. He has some tests if anyone is nearby. I just did it because I was curious. I haven't felt the slightest bit bad or even coughed yet in 2020 so it's not because I had any symptoms. Still doing my living room workouts and sprinting 5 days per week and eating nose to tail. You can get your own official http://nosetotail.org grass finished, American raised, beyond organic meat at http://nosetotail.org We actually have a bit left this week. Usually we sell out by Tuesday night but you can still order if you get a jump on it. It's the best way to support food producers directly. I'm sure people have heard about processing middlemen jacking up prices and disrupting the supply chain to grocery stores. I've still seen grocery store shelves empty all while meat sold by producers is at bargain basement price. It's messed up. Support your local farms or get it online from us and we'll ship it straight to you. The primal ground beef is the best seller and it includes liver, heart, kidney, and spleen making it a true superfood. Stay in touch by getting on the newsletter at http://Sapien.org there will be some special content given out there. There's also a bunch of special content for Patreon supporters at http://patreon.com/peakhuman Remember this is a community powered show and if you're getting value from this podcast and have gotten healthier or lost some weight, maybe you can put a little wind in the sail to keep this boat goin! S6 Ep 13Part 79 - Dr. Sean O'Mara MD, JD on Measuring True Health, Visceral Fat, and Are All Calories Created Equal?
Hey everyone out there in quarantine land, how's everyone doing? Hopefully you're holding strong and eating nutrient dense Sapien foods instead of ordering takeout. And going for walks in the sun and doing workouts in your living room. This is exactly what I've been doing and have been feeling better than ever. I talked to Dr. Sean O'mara about so many interesting things during this interview we decided to cut it off and do another in the near future. We ended up not doing this immediately so please reach out to me on social media and let me know what questions or other topics you'd like us to address when we do our follow-up episode. His work with measuring visceral fat with MRI is so important. This is such a huge thing that people are missing, even in the health community. It's a relatively new concept and technology and is pretty costly, so it makes sense. But this is one of the huge ways to not only prove a calorie is not a calorie, but also really see someone's true health status. I won't go on because there's too many interesting things to bring up - better to just listen to the episode. Dr. Sean is very in tune with everything I've learned over the past 5 years and I hope to work with him in the future and get him into the Sapien organization. Here are a few updates before we begin. http://NoseToTail.org is in high demand right now and we don't have a ton of inventory, so jump on it while you can. You can still order this week if you're close to our ranch in Texas. If not, check the site over the weekend and get your order in so we can ship it Monday. Our most popular product is the primal and primal lite ground beef that has liver, kidney, heart, and spleen mixed in for the most nutritious burger patty in the game. We also have pork and chicken that is fed a special diet to make their meat ultra high in omega 3 compared to omega 6. As you've been learning through all these great experts on this podcast, a high ratio of omega 6 in your diet and all these pufas that are so ubiquitous these days is one of the biggest factors in chronic disease. So get the good stuff delivered straight to your door at http://NoseToTail.org Become a show producer on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman Supporters here are making this show possible. I'll continue to turn down advertisers if we can continue to power the show with the community. It really makes me happy to hear people's stories of starting from the beginning and learning more than most doctors and nutritionists know by the end. Especially when they implement it into their lives and have universally great results. How could you not? We're talking about a Spaien diet here. This is how humans should eat. S6 Ep 12Part 78 - Chris Knobbe, MD on Vegetable Oils: The Hidden Killer
Hello again my friends, hope you continue to stay healthy and sane in these tumultuous times. I did another livestream with a health professional and just uploaded it to youtube. This time it was with an ICU nurse working in the COVID unit in a hospital in the downtown LA area. This goes along with my posts on social media where I made an inquiry for anecdotes of super healthy individuals getting severe cases and ending up in the hospital. I had a lot of interesting comments from that post, including people accusing me of one thing or another. I don't know where they're getting any malicious ideas from. I actually really want to know if there are people in our health community experiencing severe cases. So far I have heard of none. People mentioned 2 Spanish soccer players who seemed healthy and there were 2 reports of people in their 40s where the commenter assumed they were healthy. I still haven't heard of anyone who actively focuses on their health and actually engages in healthy lifestyle behaviors on a daily basis dying or going to the ICU. I only hear about people eating a Standard American Diet who aren't yet diagnosed with an actual disease. I want to prove myself wrong here. I don't want to be lulled into a false sense of security. But so far it seems that the supposedly "healthy" people ending up in the ICU are 40+ obese males. My nurse friend Rylee confirmed this in our livestream in her limited sample set, and everything that people sent me seemed to confirm this as well. There were reports of thin people getting it, I'll admit. But this spurs the discussion - are thin people always healthy? NO way! Many commenters even expounded on this telling stories of how messed up they were healthwise even when outwardly they looked in shape. So I'm not saying just because you're overweight you're unhealthy or just because you're thin you're healthy. I'm also not saying you're going to avoid a severe COVID case just because you are healthy. There was one anecdote of a healthy person on a low carb diet who qualified for a major triathlon. I don't know much more about his diet or health status other than someone reporting this, but I won't sweep it under the rug. There's always outliers here. We don't know everything about this virus obviously and I'm by no means the expert. I'm just trying to get people to focus on the thing they DEFINITELY have control of in these crazy times - their own health. Focus down on keeping yourself metabolically healthy, do home workouts, and keep your nutrient density super high with every meal! Get some fresh air and some sun, stay positive, and have some control in your life by doing these things. Enough out of me, let's get to the episode. Dr. Chris Knobbe is an esteemed eye physician and surgeon in Boulder, Colorado and currently leads the Cure AMD Foundation. Cure AMD Foundation seeks to spread the message regarding his research that AMD (Age-related macular degeneration) is caused by "Westernization of the diet". Luckily, he has a theory that macular degeneration, which is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss and blindness, is not only preventable but also treatable with the implementation of an ancestral diet. He came to this conclusion when he left his full-time practice to commit his time to numerous years of full-time investigative research on nutrition. He now shares his breakthrough findings on this and the harms of industrial seed oils through presentations across the country as well as scientific papers and books. You can learn more at cureamd.org He did an amazing presentation in Denver recently and has really brought a lot of new information to the table when it comes to the industrial seed oils being the root of all evil! I'm not even exaggerating that much. Populations can be healthy on almost any diet on the planet until the high omega 6 seed oils come into the picture. These go along with processed foods of course, and the refined grains and sugar. But maybe the seed oils are the real X factor. Long time listeners will be familiar with this concept from episode 20 with Tucker Goodrich who did an eye opening interview on this same topic. Go back and check this one out and make sure to start at episode 1 to get the full download of all this super valuable health info. So make sure to balance your omega 3s to omega 6s and definitely don't eat oxidized vegetable oils which are even worse - the ones they use in deep fryers that are reused and kept at super high temperatures. You can get super high omega 3 to omega 6 ratio pork and chicken at http://nosetotail.org We have a bit left and will be restocking friday. Pork and chicken have gotten a bad rap in our health community, and rightly so, because they are usually super high in omega 6 compared to omega 3. At Nose to Tail we feed our animals a special (and expensive) diet that's super high in omega 3 which makes the meat have an unmatched omega 3 content. Our beef also has a great ratio, as does all be

S6 Ep 10Part 76 - Pulmonary doctor treating COVID on the front lines in NYC - Dr. Lina Miyakawa
Hey everyone, we got a special episode here. My friend Dr. Lina Miyakawa is with us today live from New York City. She's a pulmonary ICU specialist and is treating coronavirus cases in Mt. Sinai hospital in Manhattan. She went to NYU for her undergraduate degree, received her medical degree from John A. Burns School of Medicine at University of Hawaii, completed her Internal Medicine residency training at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, affiliated with Stanford University in California and her specialty fellowship training in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City. Let's get straight to the episode - I think it's really interesting to get to hear this inside scoop from someone dealing with this on the front lines. She's been working nonstop treating patients and spared a few minutes to talk with me. Just to give you an idea of what we're dealing with, she had to cancel our interview yesterday because she lost another patient. If you're new to this show make sure to start back at episode 1. I've spent the last 2 years finding the brightest minds in the world to interview and people continually report how life changing the information presented has been for them. Here's Dr. Lina. S6 Ep 9Part 75 - Dr. Aseem Malhotra on Our Absurd Obsession with LDL, Hospitals Required to Serve Junk Food, and Banning Sugar
Hello, hello everyone! I hope everyone is staying safe and properly sequestering themselves in their own homes. The big thing I'm focusing on and I hope other people are as well, is keeping myself healthy and productive. We can make this into a vacation and mess around and eat bread and desserts and get all fat and sassy. Or we can use this time to cook delicious, healthy meals and do home workouts. We can get things done on to-do lists that have been sitting around for months, or we can watch Netflix. I'm having moments of pure unproductivity but I snap out of it and am actually taking care of things that have fallen to the wayside and feel pretty good about it. Hopefully everyone listening is staying motivated and optimistic and making the best of this situation. You certainly have the power to do so - it's up to you. I did this podcast with my new friend Dr. Aseem Malhotra a couple weeks ago and think he has some great info to share. He's doing some great things out there across the pond. I just posted a video he sent me of him on a news program talking about how important it is to stay metabolically healthy in these crazy times. Underlying metabolic disease such as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes are huge risk factors with coronavirus. Luckily everyone listening is probably very metabolically healthy or on a journey towards that. Dr. Aseem Malhotra is becoming one of the most influential cardiologists in Britain and a world leading expert in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease. He is successfully leading the campaign against excessive sugar consumption. The award-winning NHS cardiologist has successfully motivated leading academics, the media and politicians to make sugar reduction a health priority in the UK by publishing commentaries in the BMJ and mainstream media. He also created the film The Big Fat Fix with Donal O'Neil. We'll be putting a limited number of Nose to Tail boxes on http://nosetotail.org thursday. We weren't ready for this rush of orders but got everything shipped out to those who ordered in the past 2 days. We're ramping things up and should have more and more meat as the weeks roll on. The Sapien Program is coming soon so be ready! Make sure you're subscribed to the newsletter on http://Sapien.org Other than that just make sure to rate this show on iTunes or the podcast app, start back at episode 1, share with a friend, and support the show on Patreon. I continually turn down sponsors to the show and am leaving a lot of money on the table. I really want to not have any affiliation with advertisers even if they have good products. I think everyone can agree this would be better. This only works if people support the show. And on that note, let's get to it. S6 Ep 7Part 73 - Alex Leaf, MS, CISSN on Some New Ideas on Obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, and the Carnivore Diet
Hello good people, we have a fun one today covering a lot of things. We covered so much we didn't even get to all the stuff I initially wanted to talk to Alex about. He had 2 good blog posts on Time Restricted Feeding and why we definitely should not restrict protein for longevity that we unfortunately didn't get to. A little news before we jump in - I joined Low Carb Denver as a speaker at the last minute. People are apparently pretty worried about this Corona Virus thing and some speakers dropped out. I am not worried, especially because of my super robust immune system due to eating a nutrient dense Sapien diet. If there's anyone else out there with herculean health please join us in Denver this weekend, the flights are cheap. I also may be getting some free conference live streaming codes courtesy of Food Lies film supporter Amanda if you want to reach out to me. You'll be able to watch all the action from the warm safety of your home. Alex Leaf has a masters in nutrition, a teacher for the University of Western States' Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine master's program and was a writer and researcher for Examine.com He has a great blog where he breaks down topics simply and cites a bunch of studies to back it up. He's very into the evidence based approach to nutrition science and has some interesting takes on things. This wasn't a debate, but it could have been. I try to continually bring on people I don't necessarily agree with to make sure we hear all sides of things and don't get trapped in one way of thinking. I was pretty agreeable with him in retrospect which is what always seems to happen when I'm hosting a podcast. I realized after he was a proponent of standard diet advice - lean meats & dairy, eggs and fish as well as complex carbs. This is the thing - this can work for people and does fit within the Sapien Framework. Many bodybuilders still do this with success. The vast majority of athletes do this with success. When I was training for the Decathlon last year at UCLA this is what the athletes were doing (for all sports) and yes, they had top professionals using evidence based principles to advise them. The athletes thought I was insane for eating almost no carbs and doing a decathlon. So the story is, yes, you can be ok doing this and you can have whole carb sources (preferably not grains) We later get into cholesterol. I don't mean any disrespect, but Alex is not a cholesterol expert and please don't take his opinion on LDL as a fact or something I agree on. There's many guests in the past that have spoken on why LDL is not harmful including Ivor Cummins, Dave Feldman, Dr. Bret Scher, Dr. Paul Saladino, and next week Dr. Aseem Malhotra will be talking about this as well. So again, so I don't end up in an echo-chamber I heard what Alex had to say. I still don't think it holds much water. I've been reading/listening to Dr. Malcolm Kendrick for quite a while and a great episode just popped up on Paul Saladino's podcast with him about the real cause of heart disease and how LDL is not the problem. So listen to that one if you want to learn even more. Anyway, there's a lot of other good stuff in this one so take a listen. If you want to support this podcast and get some amazing grass finished, sustainably raised, beyond organic meat head to http://nosetotail.org and get it delivered to your door. We will be getting the epic beef bacon back in stock next week. We have the high omega 3 pork and chicken that are fed a special diet. We also have the classic true superfood - the primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in. We have one that's 30% organ meat where you can taste those delicious nutritious bits and one that's 5% if you're not quite ready for the big leagues. You can also support the show on http://Patreon.com/peakhuman and get the super detailed extended show notes and the private videos of some of my recipes/meal prep and my two 15 minute exercise routines. These aren't available anywhere else. Thanks so much and don't forget the free-est way to support the show is to share with family & friends and give it a review on the podcast app. Really appreciate each and every one of you! S6 Ep 6Part 71 - Allan Savory on How to Save the World
Allan Savory was born in Zimbabwe and educated in South Africa at the University of Natal, BS in Zoology and Botany. In the 1960s he made a significant breakthrough in understanding what was causing the degradation and desertification of the world's grassland ecosystems and, as a resource management consultant, worked with numerous managers on four continents to develop sustainable solutions. In 1992 Savory and his wife, Jody Butterfield, formed a non-profit organization in Zimbabwe, the Africa Centre for Holistic Management, donating a ranch that would serve as a learning site for people all over Africa. In 2009 Savory, Butterfield, and a group of colleagues co-founded the Savory Institute in Boulder, Colorado to serve the world through an international network of entrepreneurial innovators and leaders committed to serving their regions with the highest standards of Holistic Management training and implementation support. In 2003, Allan Savory received Australia's International Banksia Award "for the person or organization doing the most for the environment on a global scale," and in 2010 Savory (and the Africa Centre) received the Buckminster Fuller Institute's Challenge award for work that has "significant potential to solve humanity's most pressing problems." A TED talk Savory gave in 2013 has received over 10.8 million views and in 2014 was voted one of the 50 most intriguing TED talks of all time. The Savory Institute is one of 11 finalists in the Virgin Earth Challenge, a $25 million initiative for the successful commercialization of ways of taking greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere and keeping them out with no countervailing impacts. S6 Ep 5Part 70 - Dr. Tommy Wood on How to Maintain a Healthy Brain and Body Into Old Age & Crush Life in the Present
Holy smokes were coming in strong with season 6. This one with Dr. Tommy Wood is pretty special. We also have the legendary Allan Savory next week. Get ready now by watching his world famous TED talk on YouTube. Dr. Tommy Wood is a full-time research assistant professor at the University of Washington in the Department of Pediatrics. The majority of his academic work has focused on developing therapies for brain injury in newborn infants. His current research interests include the physiological and metabolic responses to brain injury, as well as developing easily-accessible methods with which to track human health, performance, and longevity. He does this work through academic positions at University of Washington and the Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Tommy received a bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences and Biochemistry from the University of Cambridge before studying medicine at the University of Oxford. He worked as a junior doctor in central London for two years after medical school, and then moved to Norway to complete a PhD in physiology and neuroscience at the University of Oslo. Tommy is the former President of the Physicians for Ancestral Health society and has also coached and competed in multiple sports including rowing, CrossFit, powerlifting, and ultra-endurance racing. He's got a strong foundation in many areas of health and I think his views are really valuable. Some people get hyper-focused on one or two things - which can be super beneficial and can lead to amazing discoveries. But it could also sometimes cause people to only look at things from one viewpoint or miss the forest for the trees. I love looking at all sides of nutrition and keep trying to evolve my views based on the almost 150 people I've talked to so far. It seems some people just take something that a super smart doctor like Paul Saladino says (who's a good friend of mine, and I mean no disrespect) and take it as the end all, be all. That's not going to work well in something as complicated as nutrition. I'll take his well-informed interpretation of the body of evidence and then go listen to another super smart and experienced doctor who believes in more plant-heavy approaches. And then try to make sense of it all. But I don't have it all figured out either! I'm just confirming my own biases and gravitating towards ideas that fit my views no matter how hard I try not to. The best I've come up with through all this is the Sapien diet. It will be ever-evolving as new information comes to light. Anyway, just listen to this whole episode, even though it's long. I think it's really valuable and Tommy is up there on my Mount Rushmore of people who I am totally in line with like Dr. Ted Naiman. Before we jump in I want to make sure everyone knows about http://NoseToTail.org where we ship 100% grass finished beef and buffalo, and high omega-3 pork and chicken to your door. S6 Ep 4Part 69 - Mark Schatzker on the Hidden Secrets of Which Foods Are Killing You
Hi there friends. This is Brian Sanders who's name and photo is now featured on the cover of this podcast. I'm the guy who's making the Food Lies film which has taken up much of the last 2 years of my life. I've interviewed about 150 people now (both formally and casually) on topics of nutrition, health, exercise, and the environment. I'm also the guy that posts something every day on social media that interests me or conveys a point that currently has my attention. Search for Food Lies on Instagram, youtube, twitter, and facebook and you'll find some great content. Start back at episode 1 to get the full health info download, share with friends and family, and give it a review on itunes or the Apple podcast app. Please know that I really appreciate all of you for doing this! I love interacting with people daily on these social platforms. It helps continue my quest for simple truths about health and nutrition, and hopefully not get caught up in one way of thinking. Let's get straight to today's guest, Mark Schatzker who is the author of The Dorito Effect and another book called Steak. I really enjoyed the Dorito Effect and have brought it up on multiple podcasts. His award-winng journalism has appeared in in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Traveler and Best American Travel Writing. He is a field reporter for The Dr. Oz Show as well as a radio columnist for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. I really connected with Mark Schatzker in this episode on so many things. I'm really excited about this one and think it might help people to look at nutrition in a different light. Apparently we've both been thinking about some of these nuances in the same way for years. We talked for a while after we stopped recording and followed up on email as well. Some of it may be controversial, so I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. There's so much going on when we talk about the concept of "processed foods." Even when I make a post about it, there's lots of confusion and pushback about what a processed food actually is. When I posted that the excess fat people carry is just the processed food they have eaten, there was an uproar. I still stand by this statement. There's 3 main components to what makes a processed food bad. The first is the diluting of good things like protein, vitamins, and minerals with empty calories like refined sugar, grains, and oils. The second is how those foods interact with your body. They can spike your blood sugar far more than whole foods, interact with your digestive system in different ways, and therefore affect hormones and satiety signals in different ways, as well as other inflammatory effects. The 3rd is the hyperpalatability factor which leads to overconsumption. Throughout history, food processing increased nutrient density. Modern food processing pretty much across the board decreases nutrient density. Therein lies some of the confusion. Sauerkraut is a processed food by most definitions. But for me, it doesn't fit the classical definition because it makes a pretty empty food like cabbage that has anti-nutrients (therefore potentially detrimental), into something nutritious with vitamin C, probiotics, and very little antinutrients through the act of processing - in this case fermenting. Other people didn't understand how King Henry the 8th, who was famously obese, could get that way without processed foods. Processed foods doesn't just mean McDonald's and Oreos! He had access to unlimited quantities of refined flour baked goods, sugar, and alcohol. These are the worst of the processed foods! Just because you made a cake at home with organic flour and organic agave, doesn't mean it's healthy for you. This also goes for a snack bar that is "keto approved" with all natural ingredients. Ok enough out of me, we can get to the episode. I'll just make a youtube video about it with all my thoughts in order and some graphics. Check the Food Lies youtube for new videos each week. Also please check out http://nosetotail.org which we mention in this episode. This is my grass fed meat company which we both really believe in. And support this show on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman so I can fend off the advertisers that keep contacting me. Now please enjoy this compelling interview with my new pal and accomplished author and food investigator, Mark Shatzker. [8:25] Nature knows best, and the more we try to manipulate it and change it, the worse it gets. [12:40] If raised properly, red meat is one of the most beneficial foods you could eat. [13:30] The shift in our culture from avoiding red meat and leaning towards processed foods has contributed greatly to our health crisis and obesity epidemic. S6 Ep 3Part 68 - Dr. Ben Bikman, Dr. Jaime Seeman, and Dr. Aseem Malhotra Give a Health Masterclass
Hey, hey, how is everyone doing out there? Spectacular I assume. Not many updates this week. I'm just working away on the Food Lies film and the new interviews we got. You can still support it on Indiegogo by clicking through http://FoodLies.org - it's a community powered project and we've taken no outside money at all. Just from the beautiful people like you listening. I'm working on more videos for Patreon supporters. If you go to http://Patreon.com/peakhuman or search for Peak Human there you can support the show, get the extended show notes that are super useful and really add up to entire eBook on nutrition, and get the private videos on cooking and working out as well. Speaking of eBooks, Kristi and I are actually creating a Sapien eBook and 10 week program for complete info on what the Sapien diet and lifestyle is and how to implement it in your life. Look for it soon on http://Sapien.org Lastly just a quick mention of http://nosetotail.org where you can get the grass finished, pasture raised, beyond organic, high omega-3, regenerative farmed meats. It's grown here in the US (not shipped in all the way from New Zealand like some other meat box services) and delivered to all 48 states. We use the whole animal so boxes come with all kinds of cuts including the ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in, as well as the bones for marrow and broth. I'm all about the high omega-3 ground pork breakfast sausage these days. It's already seasoned and you can fry up the most delicious patties with some eggs and maybe a little cheese. If you ever liked fast food breakfast, you'll think it was gross compared to this meal. You can get it with or without the organs mixed in. We feed the pigs and chickens a special feed (which is pretty expensive) to give them this high omega 3 to omega 6 ratio. It has been independently tested and it blows conventional and even organic pork out of the water. That's at http://nosetotail.org Now onto this awesome panel discussion! We covered a bunch of stuff including why is fat not bad, but actually good? Why are the Dietary guidelines wrong and what's stopping mainstream adoption? Is sugar a drug? Why carbs are actually worse than protein/fat for health. Insulin, longevity, and if there are any downsides or myths about these types of diets? I've had Ben and Jaime on the podcast already, so you should already know who they are, or I'd recommend going back and listening to their episodes. I say this a lot, but I really recommend going back to episode 1. And please share with friends and family. People send me a lot of messages about how beneficial this podcast is for people new to these topics. They share it and they get hooked! Dr. Aseem Malhotra is a British Cardiologist who's making waves around the world. I'll give him a full intro when he comes on the podcast in a couple weeks. We have awesome footage of this panel that will make it to the Food Lies youtube channel soon! Until then, here's the 3 brainiacs and their wise words! BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post SHOW NOTES We have three guests with us today from the Metabolic Health Summit. Ben Bikman is a professor of pathophysiology and biomedical science at BYU in the physiology and developmental biology department and teaches in pathophysiology. His research focuses on molecular mechanisms that mediate the disruption that causes and accompanies metabolic disorders, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, and dementia. He has a Ph.D in Bioenergetics at East Carolina University and did a postdoctoral fellowship with the Duke-National University of Singapore in metabolic disorders. Dr. Jaime Seeman (M.D. FACOG) is a board certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist with a background in Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science. She is also a current Fellow in Integrative Medicine and a Board Certified Ketogenic Nutrition Specialist. She did her undergraduate training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she was a collegiate athlete for the Cornhuskers receiving many awards and honors. She then continued her education at the University of Nebraska School of Medicine where she received her Doctor of Medicine degree. She is a wife and mom to three little girls. S6 Ep 2Part 67 - John & Molly from The Biggest Little Farm on Feeding the World with Regenerative Practices
Hello there beautiful people, I'm just getting back from an extraordinary weekend at the Metabolic Health Summit. I'd highly recommend it next year and I believe they have some super discounted tickets on sale now. I don't know how much it costs, but it's worth it! It's an entire weekend of hanging around all the top researchers and doctors in this space and not only getting to see their latest research in the presentations, but getting to talk to them about it in person. Everyone is walking around and available to talk to - it's so cool. And of course all the attendees are awesome as well. I got 7 more interviews for Food Lies and I guess the 2nd film that will no doubt be made. I also did some really cool panel discussions that will go to YouTube. The first one was with crowd-favorite Dr. Ben Bikman, and 2 of my new best pals the lovely Dr. Jaime Seeman and Dr. Aseem Malhotra the renowned British cardiologist. The 2nd panel was with 2-time world champion rower and PhD Brianna Stubbs, 2-time world record holding ultra runner Zach Bitter, and 2-time hanging out with Brian nutrition, metabolism, and exercise physiology expert, Mike Mutzel. These will be out on YouTube soon and maybe as a podcast as well. So many great connections and fun things in the works, I can't begin to name them all. So on to the guests today. John and Molly are an amazing couple that own Apricot Lane Farm which is just north of Los Angeles. They spent the last 8 years creating a thriving regenerative certified organic farm growing many kinds of animals and countless fruit, vegetable, and cover crops. They documented this journey for most of the 8 years and made an award winning film called The Biggest Little Farm. You can watch it on iTunes, Amazon, or Hulu and I suggest you do this immediately. Maybe even before listening on any further. I won't spoil any of the story and leave it for them to highlight in this podcast or for you to watch in the film. That's my company so you can get your meat there and support me (in a small way) and our ranch in Texas. You can also support the Food Lies film on http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post by clicking through http://FoodLies.org - we still are taking preorders and have the Eat Meat shirts there. We are in the last steps of getting the film finished but still need your help. You can also get the private food and exercise videos as well as the extended show notes for this podcast by becoming a Patreon supporter on http://patreon.com/peakhuman And if you'd like to support in a non-monetary way you can give the podcast a review on iTunes or the Apple podcast app and share any of these things with family and friends! Thanks so much everyone, it wouldn't be possible without you. Please enjoy the really insightful and beautiful words of John & Molly Chester. S6 Ep 1Part 66 - David Montgomery, PhD on The Foundation of Human & Environmental Health - The Soil: Regenerative Farming & Growing a Revolution
Hello there, we're back for Season 6! I can't wait to kick this off and I'm really sorry it took so long to arrive. I had a million things going on working on the Food Lies film back home in Hawaii and also when I got back to LA. Also a couple interviews fell through. I did focus on getting some more video content out on youtube, so check out the Food Lies channel. There's a ton of short & sweet content to keep you educated and entertained! My number 1 goal of Peak Human is to have top quality informative content - quality over quantity. I also wanted to not have any conflicts of interest so I decided from day 1 to not have any sponsors. This also allows me to have top quality guests at my own pace. If I was making money per episode I'd have all kinds of random people on because I'd be incentivized to do so. Instead, I briefly mention my own projects and companies before each episode and have guests I really want to have on and take some time off if I need to. So what's going on with me? We made an epic intro to Food Lies that took months of planning and all kinds of resources. It's a 4.5 minute piece with 130 shots, each which took many hours to prepare and shoot. This film is going to be something special. As I've said before, we could have rushed something out that was a B+ by last fall. We are going for an A+ (which might take a year longer). You can continue to support it's costly creation on Indiegogo by clicking through http://foodlies.org The trailer is very outdated and was created with almost no budget - so it's not representative of the final product. We'll redo it at some point. I also have been fired up about Nose to Tail. I served some of the grass finished primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen at the Meat-Up we had in West LA this past weekend. It was a huge hit and went very quickly. It's so delicious - you don't taste the organs - it just tastes like richer, more nutrient dense meat. Especially if you add a little seasoning in. We have all kinds of great stuff on http://NoseToTail.org that's all sustainably and ethically raised, beyond organic, high omega 3, and extra tasty. Per popular demand, I've been making some cooking videos and am just finishing my 15 minute workout routine video for Patreon members. I only work out 4 times per week for 15 minutes and have seen great results. If you go to http://patreon.com/peakhuman and join as a supporter you'll get these private videos and also support this podcast and everything else I do. I really, really appreciate everyone who has stepped up and done this. I honestly turn down sponsors each and every week because I don't want to promote other people's products and get caught up in all that - even if I totally agree with what they're selling! It's just a few bucks per month at Patreon.com/peakhuman or click through the link in my Instagram bio. My instagram is where most of the action takes place daily. If you're not following there my handle is http://instagram.com/food.lies That's it! Give the show a review on itunes or click on 1-5 stars in the podcast app if you'd like to do something that's free. You can also share any of my content with family or friends of course! So here's a bit about my Guest today. David R. Montgomery is a MacArthur Fellow and professor of geomorphology at the University of Washington. He is an internationally recognized geologist who studies landscape evolution and the effects of geological processes on ecological systems and human societies. An author of award-winning popular-science books, he has been featured in documentary films, network and cable news, and on a wide variety of TV and radio programs, including NOVA, PBS NewsHour, Fox and Friends, and All Things Considered. His books have been translated into nine languages. He also travels the country speaking and educating on regenerative practices. I first caught wind of him from his excellent book DIRT: Erosion of Civilizations and am halfway done with his book Growing a Revolution. Listen to this interview and you'll probably want to grab them both. He's an awesome guy doing great things. Although soil seems like a boring topic, trust me, there's a lot more to it, and a ton of great info in this interview. Without further ado, here's Professor David Montgomery. S5 Ep 9Part 65 - Mike Mutzel, MS Proves the Safety & Effectiveness of Ketogenic Carnivore Diets, Fasting, Metabolism, Autophagy & More
Welcome Back! I'm about to takeoff to Hawaii to work on the Food Lies film with the amazing Director, Jay. I got to do this podcast in person with the very awesome Mike Mutzel AKA Metabolic Mike. We ran outside to feed his backyard chickens and pigs and then got the mics going. Mike Mutzel has an MS in clinical nutrition and currently focuses his efforts on communicating the science behind longevity, fasting, ketosis, exercise and all things pertaining to improving our metabolic health BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post SHOW NOTES Mike Mutzel has an MS in clinical nutrition and currently focuses his efforts on communicating the science behind longevity, fasting, ketosis, exercise and all things pertaining to improving our metabolic health He raises his own pigs, chickens, and turkeys in his backyard He thinks it's important for his daughter to eat real food and see where it comes from Raising animals has improved his mental well-being Mike started his health journey just simply removing the buns from his burgers Measuring objective biomarkers motivates people to stick to lifestyle changes because they can see the benefits Mike was exposed to drugs and alcohol at a very young age and used diet and exercise to improve his life Soy protein made him depressed and gave him GI issues Mike got into keto because of his interest in heart rate variability The ketogenic diet is not stressful on the body Mike runs blood labs twice a year to know he is on the right track Donates blood twice a year now that he is eating more meat His wife follows OMAD and has seen amazing benefits Him and his wife got full body MRIs and DEXA scans to show that their lifestyle is benefiting them Pros and cons to testing biomarkers GrimAge test to test your biological age against your chronological age Ancel Keys and the Minnesota Starvation Experiment The Game Changers nuances Mike's experience losing a lot of weight and muscle with veganism Time-restricted feeding, alternate day fasting, and early time restricted feeding Circadian biology and feeding times Mike isn't concerned with coffee during his morning fast Fasting will lower glucose and insulin and increase glucagon and ketosis Reducing glycemic variability has some benefits for reducing oxidative stress Mike does a 24-hour fast every Monday Fasting is a stoich practice and teaches discipline Fasting is not just about restricting calories You wouldn't do the same workout every single day, and variability of energy intake works the same: restricting food intake (fasting) and feeding (maybe some days you are in a surplus) Fasting causes you to deal with how you use food to fill voids in your life (emotional eating) Fasting is a very safe practice People who claim fasting is a stressor need to understand that eating is stressful on the body Your body can anticipate the intake of food How long do we need to fast to induce autophagy? Mike thinks on a bare minimum everyone should be fasting for at least 12 hours a day Autophagy declines as you age Mike's thoughts on One Meal A Day (OMAD) People are scared that protein is going to stimulate mTOR but they should be more concerned with mTOR over-expression The importance of sleep Chronic calorie restriction vs periodic fasting Kids who eat the proper foods are so much more well-behaved Where to find Mike Mutzel: www.highintensityhealth.com https://www.instagram.com/metabolic_mike https://www.youtube.com/highintensityhealth
S5 Ep 8Part 64 - Did James Wilks Get Anything Right Against Chris Kresser? With Paul Saladino MD
Alright everyone, I'm fired up about this one! Dr. Paul Saladino was up in LA yesterday and we recorded some gold here. We spent the weekend digging through studies to give the much needed rebuttal to the "debate" between James Wilks and Chris Kresser on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. For those not familiar with this, it was a huge deal. Joe Rogan has the most popular podcast in the world (by far I believe) with many millions of worldwide listeners and viewers on youtube as well - per episode. James Wilks is one of the producers of the Game Changers - the most recent installment of vegan propaganda films. Listeners will know we already put out a feature-length film debunking his film on YouTube, aptly named Game Changers DEBUNKED. We just posted a document at sapien.org/gamechangers with 156 studies and 57 resources listed to go along with the film. We put many of the studies on screen, but due to limited time couldn't reference each one. So here's a bit more context: Chris Kresser went on the Joe Rogan podcast and debunked the Game Changers. He did a great job and we included some of that footage in our film with his permission. James Wilks then went on to defend himself, but instead, attacked Chris personally and used many tactics to avoid answering the simple question of "why do you think red meat is bad?" He did catch Kresser on some things, I think. But for many points, he actually didn't if you look more into it. James just caught Chris off guard and cited studies Chris wasn't familiar with. Paul and I looked into those and found out James was actually wrong, was completely overstating what the study said, or made false claims about the dates of references that were central to his criticism of Chris. I'll leave it at that for now and get on to the show. I'll skip any ads for this one and will just encourage people to go to Sapien.org for more information about my film Food Lies which will be the ultimate answer to vegan propaganda films, to support me on Patreon so I can keep doing stuff like this, and to share this episode with someone. I'd really recommend watching the YouTube video version of this one. We show all the studies we mention on screen and all the graphics and tables as well. That will be posted on the Food Lies youtube channel on Tuesday. The site where all the studies can be found is http://sapien.org/debate This will be an extensive page with timestamps, notes, and links to all studies mentioned. Lastly, I think it would be valuable for Joe Rogan to be aware of this. I hope people share the video with him. I think it would be great for Joe to have James bring his "science advisor" back on the podcast and Paul and I could come on and have a debate without all the ad hominem attacks. We can share studies beforehand and break this all down once and for all. It would be filmmaker and science advisor against filmmaker and science advisor. Although, as you'll see in this episode, Paul will be doing most of the talking. S5 Ep 7Part 63 - Gabe Brown on the Little Known Truth About Cows, Crops, the Environment, and Our Future
Hello, hello good people, I hope you all had a joyous Thanksgiving. I certainly did with some friends up in Seattle for a SAPIEN style dinner, finishing the Game Changers DEBUNKED film, having the awesome Meat-Up and film viewing, hanging with everyone's favorite Dr. Ted Naiman, and then going to Mike Mutzel's house and backyard farm for a podcast. A bit more info on each. Mike Mutzel is known as metabolic Mike and has a longstanding podcast called High Intensity Health - go check him out, he's a great guy. Everyone should be familiar with the Game Changers DEBUNKED film by now. There's 2 versions out on youtube as of late - one with the "deleted scenes" and one with just the info and none of the gags. When we started this on Halloween, Shawn Baker, Chris Kruger, and I had the idea to do some skits and have some fun with this. I appreciate the fact that not everyone is looking for that so we have both options! Lastly, a SAPIEN way of eating, for anyone unfamiliar, is how a growing number of people are characterizing how they eat and live. It encompasses many dietary strategies from pescatarian all the way to keto and carnivore. It has a sweet spot (where I like to be) with over 90% of calories coming from animal foods. This makes it high fat, low carb, and mainly has you running on fat. It is nose to tail. It embraces smaller feeding windows of one meal per day to 2 meals in 8 hours (which I like). It is based on all whole foods. It's also not based on any dogma. Humans have evolved to eat many things over millions of years, and even in the last 10,000 years. It also focuses on the other lifestyle factors as like getting quality sleep, exercise, sun, etc. You can learn more at http://Sapien.org/diet You can also learn about the grass finished meat at http://NoseToTail.org that's shipped to the 48 states. It is all grown ethically, organically, and sustainably. We have unique and nutrient dense foods such as Primal ground beef that includes liver, heart, kidney, and spleen. We also have high omega 3 pork and chicken that blows away conventional and even organically grown animals. I'm proud to offer these products delivered to your home, but also encourage people to find local farmers and source from them. Now onto a food producer I'd also love to endorse who's meat you can get if you're in the North Dakota area, Mr. Gabe Brown. I saw a TEDx talk of his 2 years ago and had a long call with him soon after. I wanted to include him in the film but it didn't quite work out. I'm glad we finally reconnected and found some time to record a talk. Gabe Brown is a farmer and leader in the movement towards regenerative agriculture. He is the owner of Brown's Ranch, just east of Bismarck, ND. He believes in and practices Holistic Management, a part of which is farming and ranching in nature's image. At his ranch improving soil health is a priority and no-till farming has been practiced since 1993. His ranch has eliminated the use of synthetic fertilizers, fungicides, and pesticides. He does not use any GMOs or glyphosate. His ever evolving grazing strategy allows most of his pastures a recovery period of over 360 days. All of these practices have led to the health of the soil, mineral and water cycles to greatly improve and of course the quality of the agriculture and livestock he produces as well. Make sure to listen to the end. There's some great info all the way through. He has solutions to some huge worldwide problems with simple and proven practices. Last quick things - Food Lies is going strong. We have a new and awesome graphics guy that is really savvy with all this info and is eager to help the cause. Please support this podcast by giving it a review on itunes or the podcast app. And also support our endeavors on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman We're doing the extended show notes each week with all the extra info and studies and also creating some new video content. There's been a high demand for my 14 minute workout. I am going to make videos available to Patreon supporters of this and more about eating and other lifestyle practices that won't be available to the public. Appreciate everyone's support and now let's hear from the spectacular Gabe Brown BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post SHOW NOTES [10:34] What is tilling soil and should we do it or not? S5 Ep 6Part 62 - Dr. Jaime Seeman on Body Composition, Hormones, Thyroid, Women's Health, and Meat
Hey, hey, we're back. Let's get straight to it. I gotta get back to working on the Game Changers DEBUNKED film. Please support that on http://Indiegogo.com/projects/gamechangers-debunked or click through the show notes. Just to make sure, I want to let people know this a scientific and factual debunking film with researchers and doctors addressing the science. Yes, we have a bit of fun here and there to keep it interesting, but it's all about the truth, and exposing their cherry picking and misrepresenting science to fit their agenda. Dr. Jaime Seeman AKA Dr. Fit and Fabulous is a board certified Obstetrician-Gynecologist with a background in Nutrition, Exercise and Health Science. This was an awesome one - so many topics my guests haven't covered yet. I wish we recorded some more updated stuff about the blood spinning tests she's doing for the Game Changers DEBUNKED mini-doc. She ate 5 eggs and 3 pieces of bacon and spun her blood in a centrifuge and it was - guess what - clear. The Game Changers mockumentary tried to say animal foods caused cloudy blood plasma. They did a little "experiment" in the film and showed it was cloudy after a beef burrito and clear after a bean burrito. They are outright liars and cheaters I tell ya! They are deceiving the world with false information. Two engineers in Seattle also debunked this by eating huge amounts of lamb and milk fat and producing clear blood plasma as well. Dr. Jaime is going to do a 2nd experiment tomorrow and match the amount of fat and calories of a beef and cheese burrito with a vegan burrito and see if it produces cloudy blood. What's likely going on here is that eating a high carb AND high fat meal creates more triglycerides in the blood for a longer time. There's more to this that will all be explained in the mini-doc. So please support that on Indiegogo in the last few days of the campaign. There's a lot of overtime going into this with editors, graphics people, sound people, etc. Food Lies is looking great - I just was going over some of it with the separate editing team. NoseToTail.org is firing on all cylinders and it's hard for us to keep that good meat in stock. Learn more about all this at http://sapien.org And give this podcast a review on Apple! Thanks so much! I can't wait to air this mini-doc on November 27th on YouTube. We'll have a Meat-Up and viewing party in Seattle - Sunday Dec 1st and another one in LA on thursday Dec 5th. Dr. Ifland is the lead author of the first scholarly publication describing refined food addiction and the definition of addictive foods. She's doing great things in this space including giving talks and creating support groups to continue to help people with problems around food. I think she has very valuable additions to the health conversation that go beyond what has been covered in the past 60 episodes of this podcast and most other podcasts and lectures I've heard. S5 Ep 4Part 60 - Dr. Ted Naiman on Weight Loss, Health, and Fitness SOLVED: The P:E Diet
Hello, hello beautiful people, how great is it to be alive and well in 2019? I'm Brian Sanders and this is Peak Human where I talk to the leading experts around the world about all things health, food, exercise, food production, and being your best self. Today I'm talking with one of my favorite humans ever, you'll probably get the gist of this as we continually talk about how much we respect each other's work. Dr. Ted Naiman was the first person I got ahold of 2 years ago when I started making the Food Lies film and has been a great help and inspiration ever since. He was my first guest which has always been a fan favorite episode. I'm glad to have him come back on and talk about a ton of new stuff. Blows the old one away. Who needs it after this one. He's spent years working on his magnum opus which is the book The P:E Diet which he wrote with William Shewfelt. I felt bad because we didn't bring up William in this episode. I'll be interviewing him on the new SAPIEN podcast tomorrow actually, so we'll get a chance to hear from him soon! A recap on Dr. Ted - he's a board-certified Family Medicine physician practicing in the Seattle area. He's seen about 100,000 patients over the past 20 years and has drawn a lot of conclusions from his observations as well as from the scientific literature. He's spoken at major health conferences around the world and is basically a genius. Maybe I just feel this because we think the same way - either way, let's get a few updates out of the way. The Game Changers DEBUNKED film is moving along at lightning speed. We had a great shoot last week and I'm going to San Diego Wednesday to film with Dr. Paul Saladino, Tim Shieff (the Vegan Prince who dropped out of the Game Changers film), and ex-vegan celeb Alyse Parker. This will premiere on November 27th so please help us finish it by supporting the project at http://indiegogo.com/projects/gamechangers-debunked Food Lies is also in full force. Meeting up with that editing team thursday to work through some of this beautiful footage. That's also on Indiegogo - please learn more at http://FoodLies.org And we're shipping out a lot of grass fed and grass finished meat lately. You can get your own at http://NoseToTail.org We do all the organs and bones and everything is raised ethically and sustainably. It's beyond organic. And our chicken and pork is fed a special feed that makes them very high in Omega 3. We also do this for our turkey which is a new product just in time for Thanksgiving. Nothing like this is sold in stores. They have an unprecedented 2:1 omega 6 to omega 3 ratio. Check them out and all the other delicious meats at http://NoseToTail.org Lastly please support me on http://Patreon.com/peakhuman and get the extended show notes. This way I don't have to take on any outside sponsors which I've been turning down. These show notes are super valuable and go into depth on everything mentioned. If you can't afford any of these things, please give the podcast a review! Just tapping the 5 stars icon on the Apple podcast app or itunes is giving us a boost. S5 Ep 3Part 59 - Ken Berry, MD on Why You Shouldn't Take Advice From a Fat Doctor, Fatty Meat Keto, and Egyptian Mummies
EHello. We're back. I'm Brian Sanders and I'm excited to share another great episode with you lovely people. Dr. Ken Berry is the author of the great book "Lies My Doctor Told Me," he's a speaker, he's got an awesome and very popular YouTube channel, and he's a great doctor who realized he was doing everything wrong and had the humbleness to admit this was so and reverse course. His own health was failing him and the advice he was giving his patients was failing them as well. I love these people who can man up to their mistakes, admit they didn't have all the answers, and work tirelessly to make up for it. He's got a bunch of great takeaways to offer so listen up to the good doctor! Now I've got a few updates - we just started an impromptu project - a mini-doc debunking the latest installment of vegan propaganda called the Game Changers. If you haven't heard of this, it's a "documentary" on Netflix about a few athletes who eat only plants and think everyone in the world should do the same thing. They misrepresent science and purposely deceive a huge population of the world who is not well-versed on food and nutrition and might believe that because a few genetic freaks are doing midly well eating a few salads and James Cameron who has $140 million invested in pea protein which they make the fake impossible burgers out of say that this is how humans should eat that it is actually true. I could go on and on about this, but I won't because this short film will say it all much better. We got a great team together on short notice including Shawn Baker, Paul Saladino, Mark Sisson, and Tim Shieff who used to be called the Vegan Prince and was actually in the Game Changers film. That's until he realized the diet was destroying his life and he moved to embrace animal foods and basically immediately restored his health. We're filming some comedy reenactments of some of the stupid so-called "experiments" they do in the film tomorrow with some of these guys. We're going to be releasing this on YouTube for the whole world to see for free on November 27th the night before Thanksgiving. So many people were falling for this propaganda piece we had to make this and get it out quick - just in time to show your family members who may be refusing that turkey because they saw this unscientific joke. This is not going to delay the Food Lies film which is still my main focus. You can learn more about that if you haven't heard of it yet at http://FoodLies.org I have a different team working on that and it's moving full steam ahead, so don't worry! http://NoseToTail.org is also going strong. We deliver sustainably raised grass fed, grass finished meat to your door. It's similar to other meat delivery services but we use the entire animal and it's from our family owned ranch in Texas. Get the bones, marrow, fat, organs, and everything else at http://NoseToTail.org I'm liking the beef bacon these days. It's kinda like your best guy friend and best girl friend getting married. It's a beautiful thing. That's about it for now. So much going on daily here at SAPIEN it's hard for me to not go on about it - you can learn more at http://SAPIEN.org So now I'll let ya'll hear from my man Dr. Ken Berry. Hello there Sapien Tribe! That's right, we're a tribe now. This is very fitting to me and we have a lot of great people leading the way. I'm going to make pages for each of them on http://Sapien.org I'm talking about people like Professor Bill Schindler who's hosting an online video series with a bunch of great people. Somehow I slipped in there and am kicking it off with one of the OGs Robb Wolf on Monday, October 28th. Sign up for free at https://www.modernstoneagediet.com/bs/ He's having a bunch of these other tribe leaders on like Tara Couture (my favorite person ever - @slowdownfamstead on Instagram), Mark Sisson, Shawn Baker, all the people. Professor Bill is a great guy, a friend, and I want to support his project and message. That link is https://www.modernstoneagediet.com/bs/ or find it in the show notes. Now that I strategically brought up show notes, I'll mention the message I got from a Patreon supporter who said "If I realized you offered such extensive show notes to patreon supporters I would of joined a hell of a lot sooner. What a valuable perk!!! I think if you elaborate on the podcast about on how comprehensive these google docs are (links to studies, links to youtube videos, refined information, and links to articles) surely more people will join for access!" It's all Kristi! She does an awesome job. Support us at http://patreon.com/peakhuman You can also get grass finished meat delivered to your door at http://NoseToTail.org And put a few branches on our fire. This tribe metaphor is going to continue. You have to just try this even if it's just to get the ground beef with the organs mixed in. There's really no other way you can get grass finished beef plus liver, heart, kidney, and spleen all ground into a perfect little ball of nutrition for a better price, taste, or convenience factor. Support Sapien and a family Texas ranch by ordering at http://NoseToTail.org The film is going great. We don't have a release date but you can still preorder it and get some of the perks by clicking through http://FoodLies.org to the Indiegogo page. And now onto the guest today, Dr. Cate Shanahan. I read her book Deep Nutrition awhile back and was hooked. She has a great philosophy that's very inline with the Sapien lifestyle. She's a board certified family physician, she trained in biochemistry and genetics at Cornell University's graduate school before attending Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She helped create the PRO nutrition program for the LA Lakers which helped Kobe start eating an ancestral diet and boost his performance as he went later into his career. She's got a new book coming out early next year called Fatburn Fix which you can already preorder on Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Fatburn-Fix-Great-Weight-Using/dp/1250114497 And she's an amazing person all around - here's Dr. Cate. S5 Ep 1Part 57 - Dr. Ben Bikman on the Secret Tool for Burning Fat, How to Eat Protein Properly, and Metabolism Mysteries Explained
Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, boy and girls. Season 5 is here. I took a short break to collect some more interviews and put out a few episodes of the new SAPIEN podcast. You can check that out on youtube or any podcast app. It's a more casual and conversational show we shoot on video and audio with Dr. Gary in our medical clinic Evolve Healthcare in Los Angeles. We've started to take on more patients to our weight loss, chronic disease management, and SAPIEN lifestyle programs. You can find out more at http://Sapien.org/programs We offer one off consultations, physician supervised weight loss through insurance, and the 3 month Sapien program with one-on-one diet and lifestyle coaching. This is offered in the clinic in Los Angeles or remotely. Again that's http://Sapien.org/programs This episode is jam packed with information so get ready to take some notes. Dr. Ben Bikman is a legend. He is a professor of pathophysiology and a biomedical scientist whose research focuses on the molecular mediators of obesity and its co-morbidities. Employing cell-autonomous to whole-body systems, his lab's main efforts explore the intimate associations between the metabolic and immune systems. He also is a world class presenter and has some fantastic lectures on youtube. I highly recommend watching them and links will be included in the show notes. Dr. Bikman is really one of the foremost minds on human metabolism in the world. I'm honored to be able to speak with him and share this episode. I'll quickly give a shout out to Kristi and the super comprehensive show notes she does. You can get access to them by supporting the show on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman Throwing a few bucks there allows me to keep doing this show and creating content of all kinds. If you can't spare any cash, please give this podcast a review or even just tap the 1-5 star rating on the Apple Podcast app would be helpful. It bumps up the show in the results and gives it a bit more cred. Appreciate all the complimentary reviews so far. It helps keep me going! Also if you like meat and eat it to survive as a human being, why not get top-quality grass finished meat from http://NoseToTail.org This is my company so you will be supporting me and a Texas ranch. Our signature products are ground beef, pork, and buffalo with all the organs mixed in. You can get your liver, kidney, heart, and spleen without having to get out the meat grinder and while enjoying a very delicious burger. With a little seasoning it tastes beautiful. I think it's the best way to get all those amazing nutrients. Our pork and chicken is actually extra special. We spend quite a bit more money giving them a proprietary high omega 3 feed that translates into super high omega 3 meat. The omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is insane - it's less than 2 to 1. Compare it to conventional pork which is about 20:1 and conventional chicken about 24:1. This is much better for you than normal stuff obviously. Chicken and pork usually get a bad rap, and maybe that's well-deserved for conventionally grown versions. This is a different ballgame here folks. If you want to mix it up from the wonderful staple that is red meat, this is where it's at. So let's get to this episode with Dr. Ben Bikman - we talk about brown fat vs. white fat, how this relates to the calorie in calorie out model of obesity, insulin, glucagon, and why protein doesn't cause problems in a low glucose context, longevity, mTOR, body composition and gaining muscle, to name a few - he covers so many interesting and valuable things, I don't want to hold it up any longer. Enjoy the show! S4 Ep 13Part 56 - Nina Teicholz on Meat, Butter, Bread, Cholesterol, and Fat: How Did We Get Them So Wrong?
Hello, hello healthy people. Have you been eating a sapien diet recently? Are you feeling better than ever? Or is it just me? Many people are probably doing it without even realizing it. It's basically just a high animal food, high fat, low carb, low antinutrient diet with a condensed eating window. We talk a lot about why this way of eating is so beneficial and so misunderstood today with the legendary Nina Teicholz. She is an adjunct professor at NYU's Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, the Executive Director of The Nutrition Coalition (a group devoted to evidence-based nutrition policy), an investigative science journalist and author of the must-read book Big Fat Surprise. Just go read it now. Seriously. She spent almost 10 years researching and digging up studies to blow the top off one of the biggest mistakes in human history. Yes she says it. Demonizing cholesterol and human health foods like red meat and saturated fat has truly been a catastrophe for the health of our world. She got in this early and made waves, woke people up, and got the movement going. She and Gary Taubes have been instrumental in getting the word out to the mainstream. Listen up everyone, she's awesome! I have a few more things before we start, though. We're actually still looking for a story or two to weave into the film. If you know a family whose kids have lost a ton of weight, I'd love to hear from them. I'm also interested in connecting with an LA based editor and videographer that can help make some more youtube content with us. We have a lot of things cooking and not enough chefs! Do you have pets? We've got the healthiest pet food possible at http://NoseToTail.org It's grass finished ground beef with all the organs in it, specially made for animals. Get some for yourself while you're at it. We make it for humans too. We also have high omega 3 pork and chicken that's pasture raised and fed a special diet. The meat and fat are loaded with possibly the best omega 3 to omega 6 ratio in America. Get it delivered to you with a few clicks at http://NoseToTail.org Restocking on friday so I'll add the products back in stock wednesday (which is when this episode is coming out) and we always ship on Mondays and Tuesdays. Please support the film on Indiegogo by clicking though the show notes or http://FoodLies.org We're about to make another order of the "It's what else you eat, not the meat shirts." S4 Ep 12Part 55 - Dr. Anthony Jay on Decoding your DNA, Avoiding Male Feminization, and Epigenetics
EHey everyone out there in podcast land, we're back for another great episode. I had the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Anthony Jay this week. He's probably best known for his book Estrogeneration where he explores how all the nasty xenoestrogens creep into our body through plastics, food like soy, personal care products, sunscreen, the water, etc. This is important stuff because you may think it doesn't affect you, but it does, and you just don't realize it. You don't have to go crazy over this stuff, but it's best to minimize your exposure. What was really cool for me is that I got to talk to him before and after the show and realized what a great wealth of knowledge he has on so many subjects - which is also very apparent throughout the episode. We could have talked all day, but we cut ourselves off at 2 solid hours of hot nutrition talk. Dr. Jay earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Boston University School of Medicine, researching fats, hormones, and cholesterol. He's currently at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota researching stem cells, epigenetics, and infrared light. He also does DNA consulting which I'm going to do with him in the near future. So now for a huge announcement - the SAPIEN show is finally here! I haven't mentioned it much, but it's been in the works for a while. It's recorded on video and audio at SAPIEN headquarters at Evolve Healthcare in Woodland Hills, California with in-person guests. My co-host is the one and only Dr. Gary Shlifer who was a recent Peak Human guest. By far the most positive feedback of any episode. Go back and listen if you'd like (it's episode 48) or just jump in and start with the Sapien podcast that is launching today! So I'd suggest pausing this episode and subscribing now before you forget. Go ahead, I'll wait. Just look up Sapien in any podcast app or on youtube. The podcast version has higher quality audio and the youtube version has our smiling faces! We already have a bunch of great episodes in the bag, including one where Dr. Paul Saladino and Dr. Gary get in a small war. It got awkward after that one. My other co-host is Yaniv Fituci, the producer of Food Lies and co-founder of http://Attack.Media He produces shows for Disney, Sony, Nintendo and all that other Hollywood stuff. He'll be coming in and out and bringing his awesome perspective into the mix. So I'll keep it quick this week on how to support this show, myself, and all things Sapien. My main venture is the sapien organization which can be found at http://sapien.org which includes the Food Lies film, Nose to Tail grass finished meat, this podcast, and even the long term vision of changing the way we farm with the Sapien Movement. You can find out more about the Sapien Diet there which people have been asking about. I posted my before and after picture on instagram, facebook, and twitter to show what happens when you eat densely and move intensely and live a Sapien Lifestyle, which is how us modern homo sapiens in 2019 should be living. I swear it's the easiest thing to do once you understand what to do and why you're doing it. I eat the most delicious meals I can imagine until I'm full, never worry about calories or macros, then go work out for 17 minutes most weekdays… and this helped me transform my body and my life. So start eating densely with all the grass finished meat on http://NoseToTail.org support this podcast so I can keep doing it at http://patreon.com/peakhuman preorder the film so we can finish it - the more funds we have, the sooner it will come out. S4 Ep 11Part 54 - Chris Masterjohn, PhD Questions Carnivore
Alright everyone, we're back, Brian Sanders here with another episode of Peak Human where I talk to the leading experts around the world about health, nutrition, exercise, and how to live a long and healthy life. I'm a bit behind this week due to the holiday and filming a couple more awesome interviews for the Food Lies documentary. Every time I think we're done, I get a new opportunity to talk to an amazing expert. Yesterday we filmed with Professor Craig Stanford a USC anthropologist and world-renowned authority on primates who walked us through how savage our chimp ancestors were and still are. It's no vegan utopia out there with them quietly munching on leaves and twigs. They hunt monkeys and rip them apart and eat them with their bare hands. He also explained the changes our bodies, brains, and digestive systems went through as we began eating more and more nutrient dense animal foods and became human. Then today we hit my alma mater UCLA completing the cross-town rivalry professor square-off and talked to Dr. Aaron Blaisdell. He's a powerful force in the ancestral health space and actually co-founded the Ancestral Health Society which puts on the Ancestral Health Symposium each year. They bridge the gap between the science and researchers in academia with the rest of the world. They're basically undoing all the weak correlations and bad epidemiology that's been done in the last 60 years that gave red meat and saturated fat a bad name using actual hard science. It's a little sad that we need this group of "crazy rebels" to show us simple facts of human evolution and animal foods being the foundation of how we became human and continue to be the foundation of health. So check them out and support the Food Lies film at http://FoodLies.org We're on Indiegogo and you can help us finish the film by clicking through - one more time FoodLies.org - and pre-ordering a copy. It's seriously the only way we can fight this battle - which is crazy that it is turning into an actual battle for our right to eat the healthiest foods on the planet. Speaking of eating animal foods, Nose to tail is going strong and it's hard to keep all the meat in stock. By the time you're hearing this we should be back with some of our signature products such as the primal ground beef with liver, heart, kidney, and spleen mixed in. We've got a ton of nose to tail cuts of beef, buffalo, lamb, pork, and chicken as well on http://NoseToTail.org Quick thank you to supporters on Patreon - help the tribe survive with a few dollars there and help us continue to stay afloat. Get the extended show notes and Slack invite link on http://patreon.com/peakhuman So onto the guest this week, Chris Masterjohn, PhD. If you haven't heard of him, you should have because he's a force of nature when it comes to nutritional research. He's got a PhD in nutritional sciences and knows more than just about anyone concerning how fat, carbs, protein, vitamins, and minerals work in our body. He's publishing papers, putting out tons of great content on his site and youtube, has a masterclass series, and is a great guy for putting up with all my questions. I hope he wasn't put off by this interview that I pushed to the very last minute before his next meeting. I wanted to bring up a lot of points that went against the standard nutritional narrative. I think a strict carnivore diet (or victus I should say - which is a better word than diet that I think we should be using) is super interesting and wanted to see what he thought about it. It gets technical in the beginning, but hold on and wait for the end, because that's when it really gets good. So here's the interview, I hope you enjoy it. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post SHOW NOTES Chris Masterjohn has his PhD in Nutritional Sciences He runs his own online blog and programs at https://chrismasterjohnphd.com Chris' definition of nutrient density and selecting nutrient dense foods The importance of nutrient balance when considering nutrient density Why looking at nutrients per calorie isn't that useful, for example if you compared protein per calorie for broccoli it would be very high but no one is going to eat that amount of calories of broccoli to ever reach a sufficient amount of protein He has a 5 tier ranking system that helps you figure out which foods help you hit your nutrient targets for the day and which don't You can either choose to eat foods super dense in nutrients or you can choose to eat a lot of different foods that are moderately dense in nutrients Why he is strongly against Joel Fuhrman's nutrient density score You want to consume all the essential nutrients well over the point of being deficient without being near the point of having too much Reaching riboflavin toxicity is unheard of The role of vitamin D in preventing leaching calcium from your bones The interactions of vitamin D with
S4 Ep 10Part 53 - Dr. Sara Place on The Real Impact of Beef on the Environment
Hey hey, what's going on healthy friends? Is everyone eating densely and moving intensely? People have been saying I should make shirts or stickers for that phrase. Anyone want to help design that? I want it to look really cool. Also for new people, or anyone really, I should quickly spell out what eating densely and moving intensely is. A nutrient dense diet with a full array of bioavailable nutrients and the least processing, sugar, and other antinutrients is what I've been exploring for the past 5 years and more intensely for the last 2. I've landed on the sapien diet which is really a framework that many good dietary strategies fit into. Go to sapien.org/diet to learn more. Moving instesley just means resistance training and high intensity stuff like sprinting. There's nothing wrong with long cardio workouts if you enjoy them, I just don't think they're that efficient timewise or for weight loss. Start back at episode one of this podcast if you haven't caught them all - you'll be glad you did. So hard cut transition to today's episode with Dr. Sara Place. She works in sustainable beef production research at National Cattlemen's Beef Association. She did her PhD under Dr. Frank Mitloehner at UC Davis who's awesome and was a guest on a very popular episode a few weeks back. She'll also be presenting tons of information that goes counter to all the vegan propaganda you hear thrown around in mainstream media or the social media world. She works daily to improve the environmental impact of raising cattle. Beef producers also want to do this because they care for the environment just as much if not more than a vegan activist. It's their livelihood. They care for animals, care for the land, and care about being efficient for the future of these as well as actually trying to make a few dollars off this challenging enterprise. Contrary to popular belief the meat industry gets zero subsidies from the government. Sara was kind enough to spend almost 2 hours answering all my questions, partly to help prepare me for the presentation I'm giving at the big food industry conference in Chicago at the end of September and the friendly debate with the vegan activist lady after. This really helped and I hope it will help you get the other side of these arguments you never get otherwise. Other updates and thinly veiled promotions include us compiling and editing all our footage for Food Lies. We're really on a roll here and have some great graphics coming together. You can help fund these on Indiegogo by clicking through http://FoodLies.org My favorite thing I ate last week was definitely the NoseToTail.org lamb. I slow cooked some overnight with onions, rosemary, and garlic. Also the ground lamb with a bit of greek seasoning is one of the best things ever. Always sad when that runs out. Get a box delivered to you at NoseToTail.org and add on some marrow bones or cod liver - get some extra nutrition in the mix. Also want to say thank you to Kristi for helping me daily. She also puts together the extended show notes for this podcast for supporters on Patreon at http://Patreon.com/peakhuman Throwing a few bucks a month helps support all this work. I'll say it again - I really appreciate this community and couldn't do it without you guys! Much love! Alright so that's it! S4 Ep 9Part 52 - Dr. Zsofia Clemens on How to Cure Almost Any Modern Disease Without Medicine
Alright, we're back! We got Dr. Zsofia Clemens from Paleomedicina in Hungary. They're doing groundbreaking stuff over there curing all types of diseases mainstream medicine believes are incurable. And you know what - they use zero medications. Their whole thing is removing patient's medications one by one. They've published a bunch of studies you can link to from their site. Dr. Zsofia is a neurobiologist and clinical researcher specialized in nutrition, nutritional therapy and brain research. Previously she's been affiliated with the National Institute of Clinical Neuroscience, Budapest and the Neurological Department, University of Pécs, Hungary and have been involved in research related to epilepsy and sleep, electroencephalography, vitamin D and brain MRI. They take a pretty radical approach. It makes sense to me though. If I ever had one of these diseases I'd follow their program as well. Take a listen. Some of it may be a bit controversial. Let me know what you think on the old Instagram machine. I'll give a quick nod to the things that make this show possible. First and foremost is http://NoseToTail.org where you can get sustainably raised grass finished beef, buffalo, lamb, and high omega 3 pork, and chicken shipped to your door. This is my company so you're supporting me by ordering and a Texas ranch. My favorite thing this week is definitely the Omega 3 primal pork breakfast sausage. It's seasoned so perfectly and you don't even taste all the great pastured liver, kidney, heart, and spleen mixed in giving it all the great nutrition. I posted a stack of these patties I cooked up with some pastured eggs and cheese online the other day to make people jealous. I'm telling you it was something special. Maybe it's all in my head. Maybe it's that I know how nutritious it is as I eat each delicious bite. Who knows. Last couple things - we have the Food Lies film on Indiegogo with a bunch of perks. We still need to fund all the awesome graphics we have planned for the film. This will be important to get across all the info. It's a lot, but it's so important to spread this message in a way people can understand. So much of the world doesn't know about this information. If you're listening, you probably do know it. But just think how long it took you to figure it all out. I'm here trying to get every single bit possible across in 95 minutes. It's not easy. You can preorder the film on Indiegogo or click through from http://FoodLies.org and you can also help the cause by supporting me on Patreon at http://Patreon.com/peakhuman Kristi has been adding to the extended show notes for supporters there. And that's it. Thanks everyone! Really appreciate it. S4 Ep 8Part 51 - Vinnie Tortorich on Fat: a Documentary and Where We Went Wrong in Nutrition & Health

S4 Ep 7Part 50 - Fredrik the Sami Reindeer Herder Live From the Arctic Circle
Live, from the arctic circle, please welcome Fredrik Prost. This is such an interesting episode. One day I'm watching epic nature shows from NatGeo about a group of people subsisting in the freezing arctic tundra on nothing but reindeer and fish, the next day I'm talking to one of them. He originally contacted me to politely correct me on something I mentioned in a post on Instagram that I read in a study about his people. The study claimed that sometimes the reindeer were too lean for them to get enough fat to eat. That's not the case he said. They boil the heads to get all that good fat from the brain, eat the bone marrow, and even eat the hooves. There's always enough fat on an animal. We talked about this and so much more. He told me how his people are being affected by anti-meat activists. He told me about his parents early demise due to (in his mind and mine) the bread and sugar they began eating and going away from their native diet. He told me about their lost traditions and the ones they keep. He told me about the steady decline in lifespan and healthspan that drops markedly over each generation. This is one of those rare treats where we get a window into another world. I don't know if any other one of his people have given a podcast interview and he told me he plans to not ever do one again. Please stay tuned for this one to the very end, it's a good one... But first, I want to have some real talk about my grass finished meat on http://nosetotail.org I know it's a bit more expensive to eat grass finished, really well-raised meat. I'm having trouble affording it myself. I mean, I don't even eat all my own product. Like I've said many times, there's no money in well-raised meat. There's just no profit margin. I should be just selling some keto snack bar or supplement and might be able to afford grass finished meat and ultra sustainable wild caught seafood for every single meal. This is just the price it takes to get animals from calves to slaughter to your door. If you go to costco and see frozen ground beef patties with a label saying grass fed for a couple more dollars than conventional beef, I'd be highly suspect. All cows are grass fed for much of their life so some of these labels can be very deceiving. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Even when I go to my local farmers market where they drive the meat straight from their farm in a bunch of coolers, it still costs $20/lb at best for a ribeye. So anyway, support your local farmer. If you don't know of any or prefer to just click a few buttons online you can support a small Texas ranch and myself by ordering from http://NoseToTail.org Thanks so much, I really appreciate all the people who have ordered so far. It's a dream of mine to help supply good meat to people and support American ranchers. I'll also thrown in the Food Lies film here, which is still available for preorder on Indiegogo. You can also support me on Patreon at http://patreon.com/peakhuman I've got some fun news - I've been asked to speak at a big food industry conference called Foodscape in Chicago at the end of September. I mention it in this episode. I'm going to do a presentation on why meat is a healthy part of our diet and actually beneficial for the environment. Then a vegan lady will giver her side, then we'll have a friendly debate with a 3rd person who represents a vegan fake meat company. This is my dream come true! Most of the giant food companies will be there including Impossible Foods. I really hope to reach people in the audience and hopefully even in these big organizations and have them hear the other side. It will be interesting if they accept some of these counterarguments, or it is just about the money. Well that's all folks, as the cartoons used to say, here's Fredrik sharing his words of wisdom from the North. S4 Ep 6Part 49 - How to Lose Half Your Body Size, Conquer Food Addiction, Fix Your Skin, Gain Libido, and More
Are you guys ready for this? This episode is 7 months in the making and has a ton of interesting takeaways. We have ex-679 pound Jeff, a fruitarian college wrestler, and a woman who no joke looks like a completely different person. First, I want to talk about how I make all this content possible - support from people like you. I appreciate it so much and it's the only way I can do this. I'm living off my savings as I try to make the Food Lies film a reality. In the meantime I'm putting out as much content as I can to get the information out there. I get messages daily from people whose lives are changing through this info, so that's really keeping me going. You can also support me by going to http://patreon.com/peakhuman and contributing there. Members will get the extended show notes and an invite to the private Slack group. You can also preorder the film on http://Indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post through http://FoodLies.org - it's still open and we still need your help. Lastly, you can check out http://NoseToTail.org where we have grass finished sustainably raised beef, buffalo, pork, lamb, and chicken for sale. We have all kinds of nose to tail products including ground beef with organ meats mixed in - which is so easy and nutrient dense, marrow bones, suet and coarse ground fat, all natural sausages, and all the normal cuts as well. It's shipped each week to your door in a custom insulated box. Thank so much for ordering! Now more about this episode. Laura has tried every diet out there and has never found something sustainable. She lost half her body weight and looks great - people think her before and after photos are fake. Her story is inspiring and resonating with people - she went from 100 followers on Instagram when we first talked to just about 10,000 as of today! We recorded the first call in January and the 2nd call 6 months later in July. I'll post before and after pictures of each of these guests on social media and on the podcast episode page at Peak-Human.com Next up is Jeff who lost 365 pounds by finally finding a carnivore diet. He tried every diet under the sun and nothing ever lasted. We had about 5 months in between calls as well. Last up is Mike who is a division 1 college wrestler in the middle of competing. He was convinced that a fruitarian diet was the way to go based on information he found online about our primate ancestors. Such a different story than I've ever heard told. Stick around for this one and hear how he changed his diet and changed his body composition and life. A quick announcement before we begin. I had some great talks with people at the Meat Up in San Diego, which was so much fun! It was packed and we even had Dr. Gary Fettke and his lovely wife Belinda in from Australia show up. They're the ones that tracked down the history of 7th day adventists and the anti-meat agenda - you can hear it on Peak Human episode 29. We also got some awesome interviews for the Food Lies film down there including the aforementioned Dr. Gary and Belinda, Nina Teicholz, Dr. Bret Scher, and Dr. Hassina Kajee. We're finally done filming people! The countdown has begun for wrapping this up! Anyway, I also had some great talks with some developers at the Meat Up about the great need for the sapien technology we're developing. I realized we need some help. Building tech is slow going and we'd love to build a team of like minded individuals to speed up the process and expand on the platform. Email me at [email protected] if you're interested in helping. So let's get to it. I hope people like this new type of episode to change things up. I thought it was really interesting to hear these people's stories so hopefully you find value in them as well. Here's my first call with Laura Spath. SHOW NOTES Laura Spath She started by posting photos of her transformation on instagram which is how I found her At her highest weight, she weighed 263lbs She went low-carb/keto but still had cravings for other foods Then she went carnivore and lost a total of 120lbs When she was on keto should relied on low-carb sweeteners and packaged foods that never allowed her to get over her cravings Carnivore was the first time she didn't want to cheat She has lost substantial amount of weight before but always ended up gaining back more, but with carnivore she has been consistent She went vegan for a year, and was having a lot more health problems She looks very healthy now, it's helped her acne and body composition She doesn't see herself adding plant foods back into her diet because of how good she feels without them Her husband has lost 110 pounds and reversed his diabetes and high blood pressure Follow up with Laura Since they last talked she is the same weight, which is a huge win because she has never found a diet that was sustainable Maintaining weight loss is a lot harder than losing weight Her body composition is improving vs losing weight on the scale She uses short-term goals to stay on track She fears n
S4 Ep 5Part 48 - Dr. Gary Shlifer on The Flawed Medical System, Nutrition Dogma, and Solutions Through Ancestral Principles
EAnd we're back from Canada with amazing footage in hand. The film tour was a huge success. I posted a bunch of stuff from Tara's farm on Instagram that you have to check out I'm @food.lies and she is @slowdownfarmstead. It was the best food I've ever had in my life. All the animals and plants were grown from start to finish on her land, killed and butchered by her and her husband Troy, and cooked and prepared from scratch all the way down to the raw butter that was bright yellow and chock full of nutrients. I was full in a way I've never felt before. Truly an unbelievable experience. We also were in Calgary filming at TK Ranch with the awesome Dylan Biggs. He's doing great things on rocky, thin soil that can't be used for anything else but cattle - who really are nature's miracle. We also had the 2 meat-ups in Toronto - such a good time. So many great people came out and the talks were inspiring. Then there was the fat-adapted Pentathlon where I did the 5 events back to back on the track for the North, Central American and Caribbean World Masters Athletics Championship and took 2nd in my age group. I didn't eat all day and then during the event I had a little raw liver and 2 thin slices of salami and cheese to get a little something in my stomach just in case. The last event was the 1500 and everyone was dying after a long, hot day. I had full energy still and came in 2nd overall. Maybe I would have done better if I was training instead of traveling around stuffing my face at all these events and farms. Now onto this episode which is with a great board certified internal medicine specialist and functional/root cause medicine practitioner Dr. Gary Shlifer. He's a founding member of Sapien.org and I talked to him live from his clinic that I also work out of in Woodland Hills, California. He's part of a new wave of doctors that see through the outdated textbooks and teachings and aren't going to continue that standard "sick care" medical practice that doles out pills and meds and never treats underlying disease. He's got a lot of passion and been on some big podcasts and youtube videos lately and is doing great things! We're following in the footsteps of Virta Health and reversing tyor 2 diabetes and obesity with diet, lifestyle, and a collaborative model using technology and health coaches. You can find out more at http://Sapien.org/sapienhealth A few more things before we begin: The Meat-Up in San Diego is growing by the minute. We have special guests Dr. Paul Saladino, Alyse Parker from a couple episodes ago, William Shewfelt, Dave Feldman just freed up and is going to make it, Logan Sneed AKA Logan FusionLean, and now the great Dr. Ken Berry. We'll all be at Queenstown Public House wednesday night July 24th. RSVP at NoseToTail.org/event It's going to be awesome! It's the night before the Low Carb USA conference starts. If anyone wants last minute tickets message me on social media and I'll give you a coupon code for 20% off. You can also find the nose to tail meats on that site NoseToTail.org where we have grass finished ground beef with grass finished organ meats mixed in. One which has about 30% liver, heart, kidney, and spleen, and one with about 5% of those organs. There's so many other delicious and nutritious things there like bone marrow bones, bone broth, beef and buffalo bacon, high omega 3 pork and chicken, omega 3 ground pork with organ meats mixed in, lamb, and buffalo. Just check it out. It's all delivered to you each week as long as you're in the contiguous 48 US states. We still have the Eat Meat shirts and other perks if you preorder the film on Indiegogo - click through FoodLies.org We are trying to scrape the last money together for all these awesome graphics we're creating to really make this film shine and get the info across. It's not cheap, even though we're calling in some favors. Lastly, please support this podcast on Patreon.com/peakhuman and get the extended show notes and my sincere gratitude. It's not possible without the community. Thanks so much for supporting all my efforts! Now here's Dr. Gary Shlifer! BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES We are live in person with Dr. Gary in his clinic in Woodland Hills in Los Angeles He's my business partner at http://Sapien.org and has had his own private practice for 3 years now while also working in hospitals around LA He practices root cause medicine, functional medicine, or whatever you want to call the better way of doing things instead of just slinging medications and treating symptoms like many mainstream doctors You invest a lot of time and money into medical school, it makes it hard to accept that there are things you learn about medicine health care should be questioned It's scary for doctors to go against big organizations like the American Diabetes Association My content challenged the foundational knowledge
S4 Ep 4Part 47 - The Great Meat Debate w/ Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, & Dr. Shawn Baker
Ohhh man we have a special one today, everyone. I didn't want to release this as a podcast but hey, why not? I had some of the superheroes of meat eating in one film studio, so I had to take advantage of this opportunity to let everyone hear the audio version. You'll see this on the big screen - in Food Lies and maybe even other places someday. We shot it in our production studio which belongs to my Sapien.org business partner who is producing Food Lies with me. To set the scene a bit, it's a large warehouse and we were sitting in the middle on director chairs with 3 cameras filming. We hit 7 main topics based around meat. We started off high level for a general audience to ease in - why should meat be included as a part of a healthy diet? We went all the way into details of a carnivore diet and should it be nose to tail or just steak and eggs? We also talked about how much plant food we should include in our diet. I always include some - and Mark Sisson used to recommend including a lot - seems like things are changing though... So I definitely agree with the nose to tail meat-eating approach - so much so that I named my grass finished meat company after it. We have grass finished beef, buffalo, and lamb, as well as pasture raised pork and chicken. Our pork and chicken has been tested in an independent lab and has one of the best omega 6 to omega 3 ratios around. It's around 1.5 to 1 which is amazing! Most conventionally raised pork is 20:1 and conventionally raised chicken about 24:1. You can see the results on NoseToTail.org and also place an order. It's shipped out to all 48 contiguous US states each week on Monday and Tuesday. We also have ground beef, buffalo, and pork with organ meats mixed in. You get liver, heart, kidney, and spleen all grass finished and all mixed in so you barely taste it. If you can't support me in this way, you can join the Patreon and get the extended show notes for the podcast each week at http://Pateron.com/peakhuman and get invited to the private slack group while also keeping the show ad-free. We're in the final days of filming for Food Lies. People keep asking me when it will be released and unfortunately I don't know. We've been editing it for months and keep finding great new experts and stories to add. The world is changing by the day as well and it's hard to find a cutoff for what content to include in the film. Do we include the news that there's glyphosate in the Beyond Meat burgers? What about Miki Ben-Dor's latest study on human evolution and meat eating? Anyway, it's close to being finished but we still need to do a ton of graphics to illustrate all of these points and make these big concepts easier to understand - so it will take some time. We just got back from an incredible film tour in Calgary, Toronto, and Ottawa. Some awesome farmers and ranchers doing some great things for the land, the animals, and dispelling vegan propaganda. So much of the land on earth just isn't suitable for crops, yet works perfectly for cattle and other ruminant animals. Anti-meat activists are so clueless when it comes to this, it's a real shame. We're about to head out for the very last shoots in San Diego July 24th-27th based around the Low Carb USA conference. Some great doctors will be in town that we'll be getting in the film. Come say hi - I'll be at the conference a bit. We'll also have our Meat-Up there on Wednesday July 24th in downtown san diego with Dr. Paul Saladino and ex-vegan turned carnivore Alyse Parker from the last episode. RSVP at http://NoseToTail.org/event Can't wait to see everyone there! Now here's the mighty meaty men themselves - Mark Sisson, Dr. Paul Saladino, and Dr. Shawn Baker. BUY THE MEAT NosetoTail.org Preorder Food Lies: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman SHOW NOTES Why should meat be included in a healthy diet? Human evolution and brain development relating to meat eating Bioavailable nutrients Where did we go wrong if we've been eating meat for all of history? Agriculture "was the worst mistake in human history" Our brain sizes have shrunk since agriculture We can survive on grains, but can we thrive? Fallback foods Are we eating the same meat as we did in the past? What about fruits and vegetables in the past? We've been eating meat in the same basic form for 2 million years yet plants are very new Only consistent food we've had for history has been animals Mark has always said "make half your plate plants" does he still believe this? You don't need the amount of calories you may think to still thrive and not be hungry Are the RDAs relevant to those who don't eat a bunch of carbs, sugar, and processed foods? Our nutrition guidelines are based on a bad diet Diet is turning into religion Much of our nutrition info is based on poorly conducted observational studies There is no nuance in nutrition reporting People eating the most meat in Asia have the longest life Replacing animal product
S4 Ep 3Part 46 - Alyse Parker (RawAlignment) on Going From Vegan Celebrity to an Animal Based Diet
Hey Hey welcome back. Thanks for listening and thanks for all the kind words about this podcast. I get tons of messages and emails weekly and the stories of change are inspiring. It helps to keep me going and put in the work to find amazing experts and put out a good show. Today we have Alyse Parker who used to go by Raw Alignment. She had a huge vegan following of over 750,000 subscribers on youtube and hundreds of thousands on Instagram. She did different plant based diets over the course of about 4 years including raw vegan and ended up with some terrible health conditions. I won't give up too much, but she's now eating almost completely animal foods. It's an interesting story and I hope you enjoy it! SHe's a great person and I'm looking forward to a meat up we'll be having in San Diego on July 24th with her and Paul Saladino. I'll announce that soon so people can RSVP. We have 2 Meat-Ups in Toronto coming up. One this Saturday at the world famous Speducci Mercatto with North America's only meat sommelier. Mikhaila Peterson, Tara Couture (who's @slowdownfarmstead on Instagram - my favorite account ever), and Bryan Gilvesy a sustainable farmer and speaker will be there as our guests of honor. They'll all be saying a few words and hanging out and eating the all you can eat delicious meat and some wine. We'll have the Food Lies team there as well so grab a ticket on http://NoseToTail.org/event We also have a free Meat-Up at The Simple Kitchen Friday JUly 19th. We'll have grass fed burgers and other paleo/keto/sapien options there for purchase as well as wine and beer. RSVP at the same place http://NoseToTail.org/event Comment or message me on social media if you'd like to have a Meat-Up in your city. A few other quick things. Please support this show on Patreon at Pateron.com/PeakHuman. I really need your support to keep this podcast ad-free. You'll get the extended show notes which are super information-packed and an invite to the private Slack group. You can still pre-order the film and get the Eat Meat shirts and the other great perks on Indiegogo. You can link there from http://FoodLies.org And last, but not least we have my grass finished meat company Nose To Tail. Don't need to talk about this because Alyse made her own advertisement at the end. We never talked about this beforehand, I promise. So here it is, the wonderful reformed vegan celebrity, Alyse Parker. SHOW NOTES Alyse is a YouTuber who created a following living a vegan lifestyle She lived on a fruit farm in Hawaii where she started a raw vegan diet After 4 years on a vegan diet she realized her health was declining Her experience hiking the Appalachian trail She moved back to Hawaii and started experiencing loss of appetite, sinus congestion, brain fog, fatigue, and loss of memory and found out she had mold toxicity Out of desperation she tried a carnivore diet and felt immediately better She now realizes everything she was missing from a vegan diet She believes there is a trend with vegans who notice at year 4-5 their health begins to decline There is no open dialog around the negative side effects of veganism If you are vegan you believe you are eating the ideal diet There is a trend with vegans developing sensitivities to foods Her experience with such a big following when her identity was centred on veganism The reactions of her followers transitioning away from veganism Why is there a stigma around red meat for women? How she felt after adding animal products back into her diet She wants to continue sharing her journey online to inspire people to make any changes they need to make and for them to know it's ok not to have your health figured out Hearing other people's stories gives you permission to question things and see it helping someone else helps you make rational decisions Alyse's main messages online are not revolved around food, her message is about tuning into yourself and building confidence http://instagram.com/alyseparkerr BUY THE MEAT: http://NoseToTail.org Support me on Patreon! http://patreon.com/peakhuman Preorder the film here: http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post Film site: http://FoodLies.org YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies Sapien: http://Sapien.org Follow along: http://twitter.com/FoodLiesOrg http://instagram.com/food.lies http://facebook.com/FoodLiesOrg Theme music by https://kylewardmusic.com/
