Batida - Tirei o Chapéu Mixtape

Batida - Tirei o Chapéu Mixtape (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-07 A distinctly vibrant project with it’s feet firmly rooted in the past, Batida combine samples from old 1970s Angolan tracks with modern electronic dance music. Here's what he has to say about our Paris DJs invitation: "I did this mix as did early Batida radio shows: mixing old tunes with new beats. On the old side you have Angolan tunes i choose not based on the artist but on grooves i like, some of i have sampled on Batida tracks and, on the new beats, you have favourite Lisbon producers such as my buddy Beat Laden on an unreleased remix, Marfox with his minimal productions, on a track from his EP, Conductor of Buraka fame, but of Conjunto Ngonguenha fame for me, on an unreleased track he shared, another unreleased remix by Octa Push and some Luandan stars: Kilamu, Dj Znobia and my favourite MC, Bruno M. who promised to feature on a future Batida track as i djed for him on a show. Ending track is a remix by Mauricio Pacheco, a brasilian producer, who picked on a Teta Lando classic with a still inspiring lyric. An anthemn that always gives me chills. Hope you feel it." This month's Bag of Goodies' selection started with a playlist of 1000+ tracks and a stack of vinyls and CDs. The menu includes some nice grooves from friendly labels Electric Cowbell, Daptone, Counter, Urbanworld, Innovative Leisure, Luv'N'Haight/Ubiquity, BBE, Tru Thoughts, Mocambo and EBS Diggin, in the form of a panoramic view of Paris DJs' access to quality music... In that respect they belong to the great chicha (Peru's own version of the cumbia) fusion's tradition with elements of literally every kind of existing music: funk, pop, rock, French variétés, krautrock, classical music, etc. In 2007 and 2010 Chicha Libre and Barbes Records owner Olivier Conan released two must-have compilations (The Roots of Chicha & The Roots Of Chicha 2), revealing this hidden latin genre to the astonished eyes of the world. That's why Olivier was a perfect match for a cumbia and latin Molesting Laura guest mix after the great interview we've just done with him. The result is a wild and unexpected clash of his personal tastes and obsessions for hybridations. Don't miss Chicha Libre playing their very first french gig at Paris' New Morning on June 30th. Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.3

Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.3 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-25 When I was younger you couldn't find funky, soulful or psychedelic Afro music at all in France. Then I stumbled upon a used Fela CD and with the arrival of the 21st century I discovered Antibalas. Both rocked my musical world and changed my life forever. Flash forward to 2012 and I now run the Paris DJs music agency, producing with label partner Grant Phabao the same kind of Afro music I fell in love with years ago. Thanks to the site's network of musical friends, we've managed to gather in our studios and productions musicians from Fela's Afrika 70 and Egypt 80, Antibalas, Brownout/Grupo Fantasma, Massak, Souljazz Orchestra, Tarace Boulba, Les Frères Smith, Psyco, Ebo Taylor's Afrobeat Academy, etc. Those tracks will form the core of a Paris DJs Soundsystem Afrofunk/Tropical/Reggae/Funk/Soul compilation album to be released in september and we are looking out for this project for other artists who represent what Paris DJs has been about for nearly 7 years. So if you have some unreleased tropical grooves to submit to us don't wait any longer! Meanwhile, here's the 3rd volume of our Spectacular selections of new cool afro grooves from the scene, with a brand new exclusive track from Franck Biyong's new project with The Diamane Bantu Messengers produced at Paris DJs' studios, the first extract from the upcoming new Antibalas album, friendly vibes from Akalé Wubé, The Liberators, Chico Mann, Shogun Orchestra, Beta Hector, Ebo Taylor (one of the two tracks from the new album on which Grant Phabao did a bit of his magic), Jungle By Night, Amayo (adding vocals on a Melvin Gibbs track featuring John Medeski!) or Seun Kuti… and more friendly vibes sent to us by our label collegues from Electric Cowbell, Agogo, Record Kicks, Ubiquity, Truth and Soul, Honest Jon's or Jazz and Milk… plus some digging finds such as Dereb The Ambassador, The Macrotones, Bixiga 70, Topaz or Papa Chango… and with a surprising closing track from the Classica Orchestra Afrobeat, some crazy Italian guys re-arranging Fela for classical music! As usual this new 21st Century Afro 25-tracks selection gathers modern Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afrolatin and Ethio grooves from all over the world, selected by myself (Djouls), mixed and fully mastered by Grant Phabao. Andrew Jervis - California Dreaming

Andrew Jervis - California Dreaming - A Sport of Selection Mix for The Paris DJs (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-05-18 Andrew Jervis invited us to do a mix for his brand new website The Sport of Selection (info here), we couldn't pass on inviting him back on Paris DJs... 'I wanted to do a mix of folksy soul music that felt Californian, and captured a sunny Springtime vibe. Not all the artists featured come from California. But as I discovered when I moved here, few people are truly from California. We just move here, soak it all in, and help turn the place into something truly eclectic. So here's a selection of sounds featuring what you might think of when some says California - acoustic guitars, hippy love songs, and some soulful protesting. There are also some newer innovative left coast beats and tracks with a tropical folk vibe. Hope you like!' (Andrew Jervis) Tracklisting : 01. Grant Phabao and Djouls - 21st Century Afro Spectacular Vol.2 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-29 Afrobeat is a form of music that's already been perfected and there are many bands who are just trying to attain that, most of the time writing their own compositions which reflect their own influences. Here's our second spectacular selection of new cool afro grooves from some of those bands, with a second exclusive track from the Grant Phabao Afrobeat Arkestra, to be released on a limited 7 inch in september, friendly vibes from Adrian Quesada (remixing Vieux Farka Touré or producing The Funk Ark), Chico Mann, Mr Confuse, Seun Kuti, Hard Proof, Anthony Joseph, Ticklah (producing Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars), The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Doctor L and Kiala, more friendly vibes sent by our label collegues from Jack To Phono, Electric Cowbell, ESL Music, Ubiquity, Jazz&Milk, BBE Music or Names You Can Trust, and, of course, some thingies we grabbed here and there. 21st Century Afrobeat, Afrofunk, Afrolatin and Ethio grooves from all over the world, selected by Djouls, mixed and fully mastered by Grant Phabao. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Pt.1

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Election Mix Part 1 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-21 Tomorrow (sunday, april 22nd) will the first round of the French presidential election. After 5 years of monarchy with Nicolas Sarkozy, who managed to bring down the 5th republic, destroy France's influence and credibility in the rest of the world, and install a climate of fear in his own country, it has became essential for everyone to VOTE FOR A CHANGE. Yes you heard that before ('since 54' as legendary Jamaican artist Carlton Livingston would rhyme) but it's really important that France may know who it is and that abstention may be as low as possible. Don't believe the press who says that leftists extremists are refusing reality, it's a lie: as a famous poet once said, Reality Is A Viewpoint, so don't let anyone impose his vision of reality on top of your own. The majority of French people wants to get rid of the wanabee George Bush who's been running the show for the last 5 years. François Hollande's Socialist Party is a center-right one as much as François Bayrou's Modem, though he might be the best chance to beat the current midget king - those who watch Game of Thrones will get the pun. Jean-Luc Melenchon and its Left Front Coalition has been the most dynamic figure in an otherwise dull campaign. But don't even let all this really influence your vote. Try voting with your heart and not with tactics in mind. Well, don't try voting. Just fucking vote. Tracklisting : 01. Tom T. Hall - The Monkey That Became President (from 'We All Got Together And...' album, 1972 / Mercury) 02. Fitz And The Tantrums - Dear Mr. President (from 'Pickin' Up The Pieces' album, 2010 / Dangerbird) 03. Aceyalone - Power To The People (from 'The Lonely Ones' album, 2009 / Decon) 04. Dr. John - Revolution (from 'Locked Down' album, 2012 / Nonesuch) 05. Soul Keita feat. Nicolas Jaar - Democracy, I Was Thirsty (from 'Democracy EP: New Friends Vol.2' single, 2009 / Greta Cottage Workshop) 06. Phil Meadley - Eastern Bloc Rockin Beats DJ Mix

Phil Meadley - Eastern Bloc Rockin Beats DJ Mix (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-17 Nascente’s global funk train arrives in Eastern Europe with the release of Eastern Bloc Funk Experience: Psych-Funk, Satellite Soul and Cold War Disco. Having visited the warmer climes of Brazil, Cuba, Caribbean, South Africa and beyond with selectors like Andy Smith, Quantic and Hugo Mendez (Sofrito) on board, Nascente arrives behind the iron curtain and serves up a revelatory new experience. On this mix put together exclusively for Paris DJs, album compiler Phil Meadley features some of the best tracks from the compilation. Don't believe the lies you've been reading for so many years; the West was feeding you merciless propaganda! The truth must finally be revealed... Funk was born in the USSR. It was first played and sung by the Red Army Choir in Moscow's Red Square, and after that toured Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, and East Berlin. This CD tells a story that has never been told before; the story of Eastern Bloc Funk. Yuriy Gurzhy (Russendisko) Tracklisting : 01. Grupa Bluesowa Stodola - Zloto Stu Slonc 02. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.6

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.6 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-04-09 The march 2012 Bag of Goodies selection by Djouls and Loik is one for the dancers, soulful and full of breaks. Tel-Aviv funksters The Apples are back with a new album on Audio Montage - check our Israeli Funk Mix for more on that scene - and the first single Thang is a killer one, also available on a limited 7 inch… Next we have The Funk Ark, an afrobeat/afrolatin funk band from Washington DC. Their new album High Noon is produced by our friend Adrian Quesada and is one of the must-have of this spring! The latest from Italian soundtracks-obsessed Calibro 35 is just plain amazing and we could have played many other bombing tracks than the Uh Ah Barr we've picked… We've been spreading the gospel about this band for months, info, mix and interview are available here. Souleance, aka Fulgeance + Soulist don't need any introduction to our faithful readers, but their first album is finally out and the duo's eclectic groovism could not be avoided in our selection. Full review here. The Black Seeds come from Wellington, New Zealand. Their fusion of dub, funk, afrobeat and soul is reaching its peak with their latest album, Dust And Dirt. We might have a video interview of the band coming soon in these pages… San Francisco based band Monophonics will soon release a new album on Ubiquity Records, on the fuzzy psych side of soul and funk, and we've featured here their deeply soulful 7 inch scheduled for record store day, There's A Riot Going On. This one should fly off the shelves quite fast. We've also played some hip hop and garage rock you can download for free, from San Francisco's Innovative Leisure 2012 Sampler. You can grab this utterly cool goodie here, with fantastic tracks from Allah-Las, Nick Waterhouse, Mexicans With Guns or Hanni El Khatib… This is definitively a new label to follow, and we will. We've also came back to an album released in 2010, from Austin, Texas. The first opus from Afrobeat band Hard Proof is indeed one of the best 21st century afro thing we've heard recently, and they're currently working on their 2nd with Adrian Quesada. Adrian is kinda all over this mix, with a track from the upcoming new Brownout LP closing this session. We'll be back about this superb new latin funk album with a rock edge very soon… but back to this mix with Jakarta records in Germany, a label we discovered with Blitz The Ambassador. We contacted them about the upcoming release of afro/ethio band from New-Zealand Shogun Orchestra (to be featured on Paris DJs later on this week) and they sent us a magical soulful/hip hop/indie album from Mancini and The Creepers that we've been playing on repeat. Truly unique. We'll conclude this introduction with The Cheebacabra from Seattle, and his acidulated instrumental funk with crisp head-nodding hip hop beats and lots of analog synths. He's just released his third album, Pass The information, available on glorious vinyl and reviewed here. All in all, this spring's batch of new releases is quite fabulous and we hope next month's Bag of Goodies selection will be as exciting as this one! Tracklisting : 01. The Apples - Thang (from 'Fly On It' album, 2012 / Audio Montage) 02. The Funk Ark - Chaga (from 'High Noon' album, 2012 / ESL Music) 03. The Black Seeds - Loose Cartilage (from 'Dust and Dirt' album, 2012 / Easy Star) 06. Monophonics - There's A Riot Going On (from 'There's A Riot Going On' limited 7 inch, 2012 / Ubiquity) 07. Beta Hector's Derriere Shakin' R&B Mix

Beta Hector's - Derriere Shakin' R&B Mix (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-03-24 Bassist, producer and DJ Simon Hill aka Beta Hector is our special guest this week with a groovy' RnB mix! He was the man behind the superb funk and soul Baby Charles album - on Record Kicks. We had Grant Phabao rework one of his tracks into reggae, you can still download it here. He's the bass player in uprising band Derrière, a hot rhythm and blues band who's 2nd single is produced and mixed by our recent guests DJ Format and Simon James of The Simonsound, you can check their mix here. As Beta Hector he's recently released a stunning Sunbeam Insulin electronic soul long player (on Tru Thoughts Recordings), followed just last week by a limited 7 inch with the exclusive Boi Peixe Theme, a killer laidback afro-latin groover - you can buy it here and there are 300 copies only. We haven't even talked about the remixes he's putting out there but you gotta try finding his rework of Marvin Gaye's What's Going On... Well there's just so much eclectic creativity in this Beta Hector guy with that we couldn't resist on challenging him with a theme for a mix, and the man delivered the goods right on point. In your face hot and burnin' derriere-shakin' R'n'B!! "So, I approached Djouls with the concept of doing a Beta Hector mixtape for Paris DJs to celebrate the 7 inch I have coming out on HHV with Quantic, and he discovered that I play upright bass in Vintage Soul / R&B band Derriere. He told me he was really interested in this scene and that Paris DJs could use an R&B mixtape. Well I guess it's a good job that I've been stocking up on this kind of music as well as all the other genres that I like to put into my DJ sets... Of course I had to oblige, so here's my 100% vinyl selection of timeless gems that will take you back almost sixty years. I could bang on about how amazing these records still sound, how they were the precursor for soul, funk and rock music, and how I've included some absolute blues and soul legends in this fine selection, but it's probably best if we just let your ears and your heart decide for you." - Beta Hector Tracklisting : 01. DJ Zhao - Punk In Africa

DJ Zhao (Ngoma Soundsystem, Berlin) - Official Punk In Africa Mix presented by punkinafrica.co.za / ngomasound.wordpress.com (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-03-13 When we asked Erik Rug (friend/collaborator/neighbour/resident DJ at David Lynch's club Le Silencio in Paris) for some musical tips for an upcoming 21st Century Afro mix last week, he pointed us right away towards DJ Zhao's Punk In Africa mixtape, demonstrating the connectedness between Rock and Roll and its African roots, between power chords and dance beats, between decades past and today, between defiant youth in London and defiant youth in Zimbabwe - and that the same rhythmic blood and spirit of revolt runs in all of our veins. This mix includes exclusive mashups and re-edits, and goes from Punk to heavily Africanized Rebel Rock to Post-Punk, Dance-Punk, Political Dub, Punk Step, 60s Afro-Garage Techno, Bass Music and beyond, features remixes of Congotronics and a couple of tunes not from the motherland, but surely in keeping with the Afro-Punk spirit. We couldn't thank Erik enough for letting us discover this amazing mix and contacted right away Keith Jones, one of the two directors of the upcoming Punk In Africa movie highlighting the parallels between punk rebellion and the liberation struggle in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and further afield. As a matter of fact, Keith is a big fan of Paris DJs and has been for some time, he frequently plays a couple of Grant Phabao dubs in his own sets, and told us DJ Zhao and himself would be more than pleased to have the mix featured as a guest spot on the site! Well we ain't discussing and waiting any longer, here's the mix as we got it, you'll find plethora of links about the Punk In Africa movie and DJ Zhao in the rest of the entry. Get ready for a big slap in your ears! Tracklisting : 01. (South Africa) National Wake - Black Punk Rockers 02. (South Africa) National Wake - Mercenaries 03. (South Africa) KOOS - Is Jy N Moegoe 04. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag of Goodies Vol.5

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Bag Of Goodies Vol.5 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-02-28 There's a particularity to our Bag of Goodies mixes this year. The selection is only made up of records and music either sent to us by labels and artists, or which we actually bought in record stores in the recent weeks. It'll be hard for us to be more supportive and current than that. We usually gather for a listening session with a few of our favorite new tracks in the bag, and try to hit the decks instantly in order for the mix to be spontaneous. This past month was full of great new music and reissues - as always - and we can't thank enough labels such as BBE Music, Kat Records, Tru-Thoughts Recordings, !K7, Double Phantom, Truth and Soul, HopeSteet Recordings, Underdog, Record Kicks or Tramp Records for sending us tasty goodies. Keep up the good work people, we are listening and sharing back the love! And see you all same time next month for a brand new Bag Of Goodies! Tracklisting : 01. Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik

Lexus Blondin Y Sus Afrocubanos present Afro Cubik A mix of 1950's Cuban-influenced Jazz - Expect Horn Stabs and Spicy Congas Grooves! (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-02-21 For his first appearance on the website, London-based French producer and compiler Lexus Blondin has put together an eclectic, yet very selected mix of Afro cuban jazz. This mix will have you travel back and forth from a pre-revolutionary Havana to a post war New York, a time when record producers were not afraid to think large. Their recipe for a different shade of Bebop? Reptilian brass sections, subtle arrangements written by monuments like Lalo Schiffrin or Chico O' Farril, coupled with the musicianship of talented soloists such as James Moody, Art Blakey, Machito or Cal Tjader. The result was a percussion heavy form of music with which jazz chords and improvisation found a new structure to play around. Four to the floor double bass, swirling trumpet solos, Hard Bop piano chords makes it a delight for Jazz dancers and sample seekers. Beware, this mix is highly explosive, handle with care! Tracklisting : 01. Cal Tjader - Lucero (from 'Cal Tjader's Latin Concert' album, 1959 / Fantasy) 02. Lalo Schifrin - Capricho Espanol (from 'Piano Espanol' album, 1960 / Tico) 03. James Moody And His Bop Men - Tin Tin Deo (from 'James Moody And His Modernists' album, 1948 / Blue Note) 04. The Art Blakey Percussion Ensemble - Cubano Chant (from 'Drum Suite' album, 1957 / Columbia) 05. David Amram – Andes Breeze from 'Latin-Jazz Celebration' album, 1983 / Elektra Musician) 06. Dizzy Gillespie And The Big Band - The Legend Of The Atlantis (from 'The New Continent' album, 1965 / Limelight) 07. Machito Y Su Orchestra feat. Charlie Parker, Flip Phillips And Buddy Rich - Cancion Antigua (from 'Soul Source' album, 1950 / VSP) 08. Art Farmer and His Orchestra - Alone Together (from 'The Aztec Suite' album, 1959 / United Artists) Total time : 30:00 All the original cover artworks are available on the Paris DJs blog Credits : Selected, mixed and designed by Lexus Blondin Audio mastering by Grant Phabao (grantphabao.com) Links : Lexus Blondin : facebook | soundcloud | tumblr | youtube Paris DJs : official | facebook | myspace | parisdjs | soundcloud | twitter | youtube

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Pomp & Circumstance

Paris DJs Soundsystem - Pomp and Circumstance (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2011-12-18 This one is mainly a warm-up mix in black and white (hence the title and artwork), presenting contemporary and international mento, ska, reggae and dub with young blood and legends. Lee Scratch Perry's got the final and mystic word with his under-exposed last release Rise Again (superbly crafted by Bill Laswell, with Steven Bernstein on trumpet and Bernie Worrell on keys), a title which sounds like a symbol of his great renaissance. But it could also fit The Jolly Boys Great Expectation comeback, a band christened by hellraiser Errol Flynn himself while he was living in Jamaica. Both music and hair dressing connoisseurs will understand easily the play on words hidden in the title's mix. For the others well, they can write to Paris DJs and we'll answer… Tracklisting : 01. 00:00 Lotek - International Rudeboy (From 'International Rudeboy' album, 2011 / First Word) 02. 04:07 Hollie Cook - Shadow Kissing (From 'Hollie Cook' album, 2011 / Mr Bongo) 03. 07:27 Joe Gibbs, Rudy Thomas and Trinity - Windy Day / What a Windy Day (From 'Joe Gibbs 12 inch Reggae Discomix Showcase Vol. 3', 2010 / VP) 04. 14:19 The Yoots - A, E, I, O, U (From 'Sing Along With The Yoots' album, 2011 / Economy Records) 05. 19:48 Tim Armstrong - Inner City Violence (From 'A Poet's Life' album, 2006 / Hellcat) 06. 23:29 Dub Pistols feat. Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa'l Mundo

Bio Ritmo - Salsa Pa’l Mundo (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) Electric Cowbell, 2011-12-15 Did you pass on La Verdad, the latest Bio Ritmo album released at the end of the summer on Electric Cowbell Records? If that's the case, then you've missed the Salsa album of the year, no less. The only letdown of this fantastic and frantic record is its length - under 40 minutes - definitively too short, but explainable by the fact that it's also available on a (heavily recommended) vinyl. Rei Alvarez, one of the main forces of the group, prepared for Paris DJs a mix of his old vinyls, the only kind of records he's got... and a he's got a lot of it!. It's a selection of music that has influenced Bio Ritmo, which doesn't include many tracks from the awesome Fania Records catalog, but rather focuses on its shadows, smaller and independent Salsa music that was released during the 70's and 80's. The one-hour long resulting mix is as killer as the album, with lots of very rare stuff, And we're as honored to have Bio Ritmo onboard of the Paris DJs podcast, as they were to be featured in the latest, Latin issue of Wax Poetics! I think I've already said that, but get the album, you don't hear amazing Salsa with psychedelic hints of ethio jazz, afrobeat or dub that often!! Tracklisting : 01. Dick Hyman - The Topless Dancers of Corfu (excerpt) (from 'Moog - The Electric Eclectics Of Dick Hyman' album, 1969 / Command Records) 02.
