Paris DJs Soundsystem - Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.4
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.4 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-10-16 Following a successful crowdfunding campaign where we raised nearly 4000€ to press a new vinyl LP, it was kinda obvious to balance our karma and offer a new mix in our series of eclectic selections of free tunes found on the web. So, what's the best way to start a mix or a compilation? A Brownout tune, of course! We've found a rare Rock-Funk-Latin-Psych cover of The Beatles by our friends from the Paris-Austin Connection, this just perfect. What else? Well there's plenty more… starting with onljoe, a dub/reggae act from the UK we discovered thanks to the Ghostwriterz guest mix last november, and a dub from their latest (free) single by pioneering UK dub producer/selector Nick Manasseh. More dub vibes are next with melodica specialist Art-X from Tours, France, soon followed by an extract from the latest Grant Phabao free EP, featuring Jamaican deejay Reggie Stepper - marvelous and with great dynamics! We then head towards South America, with the addictive Brazilian hip hop/folk from Lucas Santtana, trippy psychedelic cumbia from Bareto in Lima, Peru, and a cool remix of Seu Jorge by Captain Planet… before going geographically nuts in a La Sono Mondiale manner, with some afrobeat recorded in one day in Cologne, Germany by Shareholder Tom, with Los Angeles-based rapper Malkovich voicing the famous 'Make It Fast Make It Slow' from late 70s Ghanean artist Rob, with mashups of Orgone with Jay-Z or Rjd2 with Common!! Pfffeeeww what a trip. Third and final part of the mix is more roots, with some organ funk from Soule Monde, American soul from Monophonics, UK folk jazz from Sara Mitra and, to close this selection on a light note, some loveable pop/folk from Nashville combo Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors. Every one of those tunes is available separately on the web (check the links in the tracklisting), because some of the best things in life are free, right? Tracklisting : 01. Brownout feat. Djouls - Sweet Little Paris DJs Boy
Djouls - Sweet Little Paris DJs Boy (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-12-24 Christmas without a funky Paris DJs mix isn't the same. For this selection we've picked a few friends, of course: the eternal Shawn Lee, the unstoppable Laura Vane and the amazingly unique Super Hi-Fi, who all put out a groovy xmas album or single those last years. Then there's the annual Daptone Records holiday single, from Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings this year. We added two gems from The Blind Boys Of Alabama, one featuring the great Mavis Staples on guest vocals and the much-adored keybards king John Medeski on Hammond B3 organ, and another lifted from their recent xmas album with Taj Mahal. James Brown is here too. The man left us on a christmas day a few years back so we can't pass on having Papa James featured with a soulful xmas song. A surprising P-Funk soul/blues thang appears too, from Southern Soul artists Tyree Neal, Adrian Bagher and Pokey, under the Louisiana Soul Brothas guise, and we close the mix on a reggae tip… Happy holidays everyone!! Tracklisting : 01. Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings - Just Another Christmas Song (from 'Just Another Christmas Song' 7 inch, 2014 / Daptone) 02. The Blind Boys Of Alabama - Born In Bethlehem feat. Lost Midas - Elysium Mix
Lost Midas - Elysium Mix (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-12-06 'This mix consists of songs and bands I've been listening to while working on my next record, in addition to a few originals. The selections here emote a kind of melancholy nostalgia. I named it "Elysium" after a mural painting in my recording studio by LA artist Norman Zammitt. It's a beautiful gradient color spectrum that looks like an endless sunset and to me reflects the vibe of this mix.' - Jason Trikakis (aka Lost Midas) This is the second volume of Paris DJs' celebration of Tru Thoughts' 15th anniversary in four parts - after Ghost Writerz 'Sharp And Ready Selection' and before exclusive new mixes from Nostalgia 77 and Rob Luis… Don't forget to check Lost Midas' brand new single 'Dream Of Me' here... Ghost Writerz - Sharp And Ready Selection
Ghost Writerz - Sharp And Ready Selection (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-30 While a majority of labels shift their focus on reissues (with no production costs) and live bands (with a simple old school business model: touring and selling merch), there still are a few out there who do the real job: digging "in the now", finding, signing new artists and releasing new productions. Brighton's finest Tru Thoughts is one of those and it's already been going on for 15 years now… Reason enough for Paris DJs to celebrate the label's 15th anniversary, by inviting four of their artists to do an exclusive mix, starting with UK Sound System Culture sensation Ghost Writerz. The duo is the first signing of Tru Thoughts brand new sub-label Sharp and Ready, designed to spotlight the "new wave" of artists on the UK sound system scene... "Sharp And Ready is the Sound System Culture arm of Tru Thoughts recordings. A platform for the New Wave of UK Sound System Culture, a coalescing of influences and heritage - from Reggae through Hip Hop and Jungle - and the distinct sonic and societal markers of our time, into something wholly new, carried forward by a growing contingent of passionate, talented artists and brought to you by one of the UK's most respected independent labels." (sharpandready.com) Besides Quantic and DJ Vadim, this mix was for us a source of a lot of new discoveries. Paris DJs is, obviously, based in Paris, and we don't have any (other) media about groovy music over here in France so it's hard to find out about new bands. The reggae/dub/soundsystem scene has always been big in the UK, but it has been years if not decades since it started getting THAT interesting again. This mix sets things right. We've added many links (see below) for all the artists featured here, don't hesitate to go check their streams and social pages if you like what your hear… and be sure to be back next week for the second part of this quadrilogy of mixes celebrating Tru Thoughts' 15th anniversary! Tracklisting : 01. Quantic - Spark It feat. Shinehead (from 'Magnetica' album, 2014 / Tru Thoughts) 02. onlyjoe feat. Ghost Writerz - Forever More (Revolution Riddim) (from 'Forever More' free download single, 2014 / Unit 137) 03. G.Corp - Money Friends (Dub) (unreleased dubplate / 2014 / Unit 137) 04. DJ Vadim feat. YT, RTKAL, Jago, Kosher and G.O.L.D. - Nah Join (Ghost Writerz Remix) (forthcoming on BBE Music) 05. Simian Frenzy - Ill Not Sick feat. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1964 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.5
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1964 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.5 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-03 This idea of doing a loooong series of mixes covering half a century of music came to us more nearly two years ago. After so many 'Molesting Laura mixes and a blast of a dozen new mixes of covers at then end of 2012, we couldn't just stop there. Mixes of cover songs are cool by essence, since they're mostly made of familar tunes, but we thought of a twist: let's sort them out by year. Let's do a mix of cover songs for each year, starting in… ok let's say 1960. Now let's fast-forward to mid-november 2014 and we're already at the fifth volume in this Paris DJs series of selections of covers from the same year - this one from songs which happened in 1964. As promised last week, we haven't forgotten to go dig into Jamaican releases this time, hence the appearance of Lee Perry, Prince Buster or Roland Alphonso backed by The Skatalites, and Carlos Malcolm with His Afro Jamaican Rhythms… tackling some classics into ska! You'll also get a heavy dose of soul with Alvin Robinson, Roosevelt Grier, Dusty Springfield, Quincy Jones, Shirley Ellis or Don Gardner (who's just made the news with a Tramp Records compilation!). Plus a bit of Serge Gainsbourg, who was borrowing from Nigerian percussion player Olatunji Babatunde at the time, with new lyrics… Of course this not the ultimate mix of cover songs from 1964, just a quick draw we made from the records in our vaults - which might explain the mostly soul & ska flavors in here! Tracklisting : 01. Alvin Robinson - Fever (from 'Fever' 7 inch, 1964 / Red Bird) EDDIE COOLEY/JOHN DAVENPORT cover, more info on wikipedia 02. Roosevelt Grier - I (Who Have Nothing) (from 'Soul City' album, 1964 / Recording Industries Corp.) BEN E. KING cover, more info on wikipedia 03. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1963 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.4
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1963 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.4 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-11-03 Fourth volume in our series of selections of covers from the same period, this mix focuses on the year 1963, gathering Jazz, Soul, Folk, Latin, French Chanson, and Rhythm and Blues interpretations of hits from the past of that time. Of course after 1960, 1961 and 1962, it's not a big big surprise to our listeners, and some cool versions of standards will give a feeling of a swim in charted waters: 'Hallelujah I Love Her So', 'Take Five', 'Comin Home Baby', 'Fever'… We tried our best to go diggin' further (without replaying tunes already aired on the Paris DJs podcast), and if this for sure is NOT a definitive statement of what a cover was then, this mix is at least a cool snapshot of some of that concept for the year 1963. The selection could have included one or two reggae/ska thingies though… we'll try not to forget the Jamaican island next time! Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem - Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.3
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Some Of The Best Things In Life Are Free Vol.3 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-10-16 Already the third volume in our series of eclectic selections of free tunes found on the web, this mix is as eclectic as ever. Things start on a rather relaxed mood, with an electro-pop Serge Gainsbourg cover produced by Professor Oz for his wife Nelo, before some surprising deep funk dressing of Australian pop band Animaux by our regular collaborators The Cactus Channel, and an inspired Ethio-Jazz song recorded and produced in a day by Shareholder Tom. We then head into a more groovy/hip hop part, with a new DJ Vadim rework, a very cool and funky tune from Slimkid3 and DJ Nu-Mark's just released album (the former is from The Pharcyde and the latter from Jurassic 5 so get your ears on that LP asap!), a splendid rework/mashup of Jimmy Smith and Lou Reed by the one and only J-Rocc, and a new California-cool song from People Under The Stairs. The second half of this mix goes into rather unknown territories, starting with a song made famous by French singer Charles Aznavour, interpreted by Congolese band Orchestre Franco, and remixed by Greek producer Palov… The killer edit of The Emotions which follows (spotted by Oliver Wang on his Soul-Sides blog - thanks!) is quite a treat too, and we've also found a way to pick a second tune from the Golden Dawn Arkestra afro-psych-rock project from Austin, Texas - one you have to grab if you haven't already. 'Produced by Adrian Quesada' should be enough of an argument… The last quarter of this mix is rather on the afro-side, with a tune extracted from the just-released Orlando Julius and The Heliocentrics album. This amazing combination of artists resulted in a killer live show last year, I'm wondering how the album's sounding. Someone please tell Strut Records to send us a promo copy! UK Afrobeat band The Fontanelles are next. Their album released last year on First Word Records is a neo-classic of the genre and even if the song we found is not available for free anymore, we couldn't pass on playing it to remind you how cool that project is. The mix closes with two end-of-program selections: a soundtrack-ish surf tune by an Israeli band, and an astounding rework of Danny Elfman's 'Simpsons Theme' by German hip hop producer Dexter. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1960 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.1
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents 1960 - Standards Versions and Revamps Vol.1 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-09-25 The 'Molesting Laura' series of mixes ranks amongst Paris DJs' most popular ones. With this new series in the same vein, we've decided to keep on exploring the concept of artists covering other artists' songs, but this time through the years! It'll be mixes of covers (the kind you're used to) but each one focusing on a full year of releases, starting in 1960, then 1961, then 1962, etc., up 'til today. The concept of the cover is not the same in the early 1960s, after the Beatles and the pop explosion in the mid/late 60s, during the psychedelic revolution of the late 60s/earl 70s, in the 80s when many went for the cheap synths sounds (yes, some years in those 80s are gonna hard to fill), when grunge was so big in the 90s and so on… Of course this series is not definitive at all, just a viewpoint from Paris DJs' vaults of music. We're now working on the year 1965 and after and we might need help, especially for the 80s, so if you have suggestions don't hesitate to leave a comment or send us an email. This selection from records released or recorded in 1960 digs into Blues, Exotica, Jazz, Gospel, and Rhythm & Blues. Expect a few surprises and stay connected 'cos this is gonna be a loooooong ride! Tracklisting : 01. Felix Slatkin Fantastic Percussion - I Love Paris (from 'Felix Slatkin Conducts Fantastic Percussion' album, 1960 / Liberty) COLE PORTER cover, more info on wikipedia 02. Analog Africa Selection Vol.5 by Déni Shain & Samy Ben Redjeb
Analog Africa Selection Vol.5 By Déni Shain and Samy Ben Redjeb (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-08-28 A bit more then a year ago I received a message from Déni Shain, a french music producer based in Lisbon. In that mail he asked me if I would be interested in releasing music from Cabo Verde since he was close to Chico and Wilson, the 2 DJs behind Celeste Mariposa (an excellent portuguese/angolan soundsystem specialised in lusophone music). 'I can convince them to make their record collection available to you' he added. I asked him if he could send me a selection, not knowing the amount of work my request would represent. I only later found out that the three-men-team had spent a whole week to pick and choose what they thought was adequate and another few days to wash the record and digitise the music. I received that selection in March 2013 and I haven't stopped listening to it since. I clearly remember having that wonderful feeling when songs keep growing on you the more you listen. 'Very good sign' I thought! The collection of songs I had received became the base for a whole concept and we all started criss crossing Europe and Cabo Verde looking for more music and looking for the Cap-Verdien artists we loved. Déni Shain became an important asset for the Analog Africa label, supporting us with remixes and mixes but more importantly with an addictive positive energy. After his first mix for us, the amazing 'Ghana Soundtrack' made out of unreleased and rare tracks from the small west african musical powerhouse, here is his second instalment made of handpicked dancefloor filler. A huge shout goes to legendary african music connoisseur John Beatle and to my close friend Keith Salter for offering us some of the fantastic music included here. Paris DJs Soundsystem presents MRR-ADM Dirty Drums
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents MRR-ADM Dirty Drums (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-01-25 San Diego duo MHE are now known as MRR-ADM. MHE was for 'Machines Have Emotions', while MRR-ADM are the initials of their real names, Michael Raymond Russell and Adam Douglas Manella. All of their releases, between 2003 and 2006, have been on Sound In Color Records' now hard to find CDs, DVD, LPs, 12s or 7s - with only numbers for track names! In 2005 they worked with Heliocentrics drummer Malcolm Catto at Mike Burnham's Tardis Studio in Australia. In 2008 they put out a mysterious red 10 inch vinyl, 'featuring Malcolm Catto', sold out in 3 days, which put them in the spotlight. They've also collaborated with The Gaslamp Killer or Gonjasufi, and are preparing a first full-length recording to be released on Now-Again Records. The sound of MRR-ADM can be summarized as modern library music with dope beats, sample-based hip-hop psych instrumentals: raw, psychedelic funk and jazz with a focus on dusty drums and bass, and some melodic touches from heavily processed guitars and synths. Dark, experimental and deeply funky, this is just AMAZING music which many rappers should trip on, again and again… Read their interview here for more info while listening to this 30mn selection of their work! Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble presents Wax & Gold - Ethiopian Classic Selections curated by Sonny Abegaze
Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble presents Wax and Gold Ethiopian Classic Selections curated by Sonny Abegaze (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2014-01-18 Wax and Gold (aka Semena Werq) is a form of traditional Ethiopian poetry that has one surface meaning, known as wax, and multiple hidden meanings, known as gold. Musicians in Ethiopia have used Wax and Gold to explore topics such as spirituality, politics, and matters of the heart throughout the ages. On November 17, 2013, the Ethio-Cali Ensemble performed a special set of music at the Blue Whale (the best place in Los Angeles to go see live Jazz) inspired by the concept of Wax and Gold. Ethio-Cali's 'Minister of Information', Sonny Abegaze, curated compositions from the catalogues of Hailu Mergia and Walias, Alemayehu Eshete, The Police Orchestra, and other Ethio-Jazz luminaries to be performed on this special night. The mix below features these songs in their original form. Enjoy… Track-by-track info : 01. Emahoy Tsegue-Mariam Guebru - Mother's Love Emahoy Tsegue-Mariam Guebru is a classical pianist and composer who was born in Addis Abeba in 1923. She was ordained as a nun at the age of 21 and now lives in an Orthodox monastary in Jerusalem. Emahoy's music is intimate, delicate, joyful, and melancholy all at the same time. We draw a lot of inspiration from her music and personal journey. At 90, Emahoy is finally starting to get some of the recognition she deserves. 02. Lieut. Mesfin Haile, Hirut Beqele and The Police Orchestra - (track title unknown) This song comes from a Voice of America reel that was recorded in 1961. It features Lieutenant Mesfin Haile and Hirut Beqele accompanied by the Police Orchestra, along with an amazing violin player. They sing, 'Life is Tough. This world is an unforgiving and bitter place, and now you are leaving me'. Sublime. 03. Getatchew Mekurya - Ambassel (Slow) This waltz-like tune is by the most popular saxophonist in Ethiopia, Getatchew Mekurya. It was recorded in 1972 and was originally released on the Philips record label during the heyday of Ethio Jazz. It was later released on 'Ethiopiques Vol. 14: Negus of Ethiopian Sax'. Getatchew draws much of his inspiration from Shellela, a traditional vocal style sung by warriors before going into battle. You can hear this sentiment in his melismatic style of playing. Getatchew still performs regularly in Ethiopia, Europe, and Canada. 04. Alem Girma Band ft. Alemayehu Eshete - Ambassel (Fast) Referred to as the Ethiopian James Brown, Alemayehu Eshete is a talented and spirited vocalist who first got his break with Addis Ababa's famous Police Orchestra. Ambassel is an area found in the Amhara region of Ethiopia with the root word ‘amb' meaning fortress. It is also the name of one of the major musical scales in the country. There are various versions of Ambassel that have been recorded by different musicians over the years. The lyrics to this version speak of a man who is out of luck in his pursuit of love. Alemayehu Eshete also has a slow version of Ambassel that has a completely definitely feel... definitely worth checking out! 05. Mulatu Astatke - Yefikir Tezeta This slow burner by Mulatu Astatke is a favorite amongst the members of Ethio Cali. So much so that one of our drummers/percussionists, Te'Amir Yohannes Sweeney, produced a tune that sampled this track. This song was originally released on Philips International as a 45. It was later reissued on the compilation 'New York - Addis - London: The Story of Ethio Jazz 1965-1975'. Eternal gratitude to master Mulatu! 06. Alemayehu Eshete and Hirut Beqele - Temeles This is a love duet that features Alemayehu Eshete and Hirut Beqele. The lyrics speak of a man who has left his lover for work. His lover misses him dearly and is pleading for his return. This is a classic example of an unrequited love ballad, a theme commonly found in Ethiopian music. Our interpretation of this tune has energy and intensity, and we substitute horns for the vocal lines. 07. Mahmoud Ahmed - Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh Mahmoud Ahmed is a beloved vocalist from the Gurage region of Ethiopia. He shined shoes as a boy before getting his break as a singer with Emperor Haile Selassie I's Imperial Body Guard Band. He later recorded with groups such as The Venus Band, Ibex Band, and Walias. Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh finds Mahmoud Ahmed singing poetically about the beauty of an Abyssinian woman. He goes into great detail describing her lovely features. He wonders what her name is and finally calls her Fitsum Dink Lidj Nesh, which translates to 'you are an absolute miracle”. (Thanks to Semere Ab-Etmet Yohannes for lyrics translations and for his enthusiastic support of Ethio Cali over the years!) Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Ticklah
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents Ticklah (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2013-08-27 Victor Axelrod aka Ticklah is a keyboard player and producer from Brooklyn. He's a founding member of Antibalas, of Sharon Jones' Dap-Kings/Soul Providers (under the name 'Earl Maxton') and of the Easy Star All-Stars. Victor really started producing reggae music 12 years ago, with his second album, released in 2001 on Guidance Recordings under the alias Roots Combination. His third album from 2007 'Ticklah vs. Axelrod', heavily played in Paris DJs mixes, still ranks as one of the greatest roots reggae recordings of the 21st century. He's been sharing his time between session work (Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Lilly Allen, Nickodemus, Sugarman 3, Nas...), engineering/production work (Rob Symeonn, Jahdan Blakamoore, DJ Spinna, Courtney John, The Frightnrs, Maddie Ruthless, Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars...), remixes (Sharon Jones, Alice Russell, Femi Kuti, Lady, Erykh Badu, M.I.A., Curumin, Bob and Gene...), featurings, new productions on the Liondub45 label, deejaying as Ticklah, and of course recording and touring with Antibalas or The Dap-Kings. Victor visited us last year when Antibalas was playing in Paris, and he's been hitting us with his new productions regularly ever since, including a few selections yet to be released, such as his recent remixes for American indie rock band Wild Belle or Truth and Soul's R'n'B/funk/soul project Lady, his upcoming latest Rob Symeonn production to be released by Jah Youth, or the Brukky project to appear soon on Names You Can Trust… The man hears reggae exactly the way we do and we're deeply into his music. This mix is an opportunity for us to share this love. A HUGE 'Thank You' goes to Victor Axelrod for his help in building this mix, and of course also to Ben Hito for his killer series of artworks for our summer mixes!! Tracklisting : 01. Our monthly playlist will still happen every 30 days (so don't hesitate to keep on sending us quality records and music), and you'll have to switch to our podcast of 'Virtual Releases' to keep on following the music we publish for free… We'll be doing a few DJ sets here and there, and maybe start some Paris DJs parties soon… So happy new year everyone and enjoy this last dish of reggae covers and remixes, including a yet unreleased track from the upcoming Silvertones album produced by Grant Phabao (out soon on Paris DJs Records), and the famous roots reggae of Lee Fields that's available in our first compilation 'Dis Is Good For You - Tropical Grooves and Afrofunk International'. Analog Africa Selection Vol.3 - Los Diablos Del Rimo Mix by DJ PepeSol
Analog Africa Selection Vol.3 - Los Diablos Del Rimo Mix by DJ PepeSol (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-12-10 Samy Ben Rejdeb and his Analog Africa label upped the Paris DJs podcast level of excellence quite hard way back in march 2008, when he sent us his 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.1' mix, featuring a few extracts from his superb compilation of raw and psychedelic afro sounds from 1970s Benin and Togo, 'African Scream Contest'. It was by far the best mix we had ever posted at the time. Then at the end of the same year he came back with a second volume, 'Analog Africa Selection Vol.2'celebrating his first Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou release, 'The Vodoun Effect' from 1972-75. Many have been following the story from that point on… 'Legends of Benin 1969-81', 'Echos Hypnotiques' from Orchestre Poly-Rytmo 1969-1979, both released in 2009, the same year we organized the first Ebo Taylor show in Europe, thanks to Samy who had booked him for the 'Africa Delay' party in Frankfurt! 2010 saw the release of an Anibal Velasquez anthology from 1962-1978, 'Mambo Loco', the 'Afro-beat Airways' compilation from Ghana and Togo 1972-79, and an 'Angola Soundtrack ' covering the 1968-76 era from Luanda. In 2011 Analog Africa kept the flow of releases steady with essential reissues from Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou-Dahomey ('The 1st Album' from 1973), Ghanean afrofunkster Rob ('Funky Rob Way'), and a compilation of mid to late 70s African Soul from Burkina-Faso, 'Bambara Mystic Soul'). Which brings us to 2012 and another masterful must-listen for all the ears looking out for some tropical-but-different kind of sounds, 'The Bariba Sound' from Le Super Borgou de Parakou in north-east Benin… Now comes a new compilation of obscure tropical Colombian music jewels from the 1960s to the 1980s, 'Diabos Del Ritmo', for which we went to Frankfurt to meet Samy for an upcoming portrait to be published on Paris DJs soon. The double CD, quadruple vinyl set was just released, and we should be receiving our records anytime now so stay connected for the review… A few weeks ago we had the excellent surprise of receiving from Samy a message saying 'look at this artcover for a mix we prepared for Paris DJs and my new record's release this week, music will be coming your way soon'. The mix followed a few days later, sent by DJ PepeSol from the Sabrosa Sound Sistema in Brisbane, Australia, who describes it like this: 'A conclusive mix by Sabrosa Son Sistema's, PepeSol, hailing from the Sub Tropical continent of Australia focused on the Afro leanings of the sounds from Colombia's northern Coastline and in celebration of the anticipated Analog Africa release 'Los Diablos Del Ritmo'. From the rich harmonics of Andres Landero's Hohner accordion followed by deep Afro bass lines signature to 'La Costa', this is a mix that ducks and weaves the back streets of a Colombian soundscape, an ode to the bubbling Colombian melting pot.' - DJ Pepesol Fully mastered by Grant Phabao in Paris, this mix is definitively an international collaborative work and number 397 in our podcast of mixes. We're trying to prep a few surprises for our 3 last mixes, since - as you might have heard about if you follow us on Facebook - mix #400 will be our last one… Tracklisting : sorry no info… Credits : Artwork, selection and mix by DJ PepeSol (sabrosa.com.au) Audio mastering by Grant Phabao (grantphabao.com) Links : Analog Africa : official | blogspot | discogs | facebook | juno | parisdjs | soundcloud | youtube DJ PepeSol : official | facebook | soundcloud Paris DJs : parisdjs.com | bandcamp | facebook | juno | pinterest | soundcloud | twitter | youtube

Paris DJs Soundsystem presents the melody-driven sound of Marco Benevento
Paris DJs Soundsystem presents the melody-driven sound of Marco Benvento (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-11-15 A new generation of keyboard players rose in the 90s starting with, of course, John Medeski (from Medeski, Martin and Wood), the undisputed king, the Jimi Hendrix of keyboards, but also Robert Walter (from The Greyboy Allstars), Brian Haas (from Jacob Fred Jazz Oddyssey), Page McConnell (from Phish), or Kyle Hollingsworth (from The String Cheese Incident)… Then came the 2000s with Marco Benevento, one half of the Benevento/Russo Duo, co-founder of <>The Royal Potato Family label, and heir to Medeski's throne. Marco is beyond talented, he played with so many different bands doing so many different styles, from straight forward jazz, to tripped-out jamband crazyness. Even funk, rock, reggae… nothing can resists his themes and melody-driven lines, tugging at your heartstrings like none other, with or without distorsion! Marco's been a regular on the New York City contemporary, experimental jazz scene for years. He's performed with countless musicians including Matt Chamberlain, Charlie Hunter, John Medeski, Mike Gordon, Trey Anastasio, Eric Krasno, Wayne Krantz, John Ellis, Dave Dreiwitz, Marc Friedman, Reed Mathis, Bobby Previte, Ari Hoening, Terreon Gully, Brian Haas, DJ Olive, DJ Logic, Steven Bernsetin, Briggin Kraus, Lyrics Born, Mike Dillon, Les Claypool, Phil Lesh, Skerik, Johnny Vidacovich, Stanton Moore and others… We gathered his complete discography, from the Jazz Farmers beginnings in 2002 and the Benevento-Russo Duo years until 2006, the featurings on albums from Brian Mitchell, Trey Anastasio, Matt Trowbridge, Everyone Orchestra or A.C. Newman (among others), to the supergroups GRAB (Gordon, Russo, Anastasio, Benevento), Bustle In Your Hedgerow, Garage A Trois, Surprise Me Mr. Davis, and of course his amazing solo career ("Live At Tonic" in 2007, "Invisible Baby" in 2008, "Me Not Me" and "Live In NYC: The Sulivan Hall Residency" in 2009, "Between The Needles and Nightfall" in 2010 and "TigerFace" in 2012). After re-listening to that complete output, chronologically, the evolution in Marco Benevento's sound, the road he's taken with its twists and turns, always going forward, became more obvious, setting forth a vision for music that connects the dots between Medeski Martin and Wood, Arcade Fire, Tortoise, Brian Eno and Brad Mehldau. Yep, that unique! Here's our 45mn mixed introduction to Marco Benevento's music. We've also prepared a nice interview for you to read while listening to the mix - in english or en français!Get on the bus and enjoy the ride. Tracklisting : 01. Todd Simon's United States of Dub
Todd Simon - The United States of Dub (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-11-01 Todd Simon is a trumpeter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and performer living and working in sunny Los Angeles, CA. Todd has found a niche providing soulful horn and string sounds for countless projects, many of which have been featured on Paris DJs: The Echocentrics, Connie Price & the Keystones, the Quantic Soul Orchestra, Antibalas, Clutchy Hopkins, Madlib's Sound Directions, El Michels Affair, The Lions, Ocote Soul Sounds, Spanky Wilson, Breakestra, Flying Lotus, Mochilla Timeless with Mulatu Astatke and Arthur Verocai, Sugarman 3, Orgone, Nickodemus, Ohmega Watts, Amayo's Fu-Arkist-Ra, N.A.S.A., Mayer Hawthorne... His current projects include Adrian Younge's Venice Dawn, The Decoders, Todd Simon's Ethio-Cali Ensemble, and upcoming albums of The Delfonics, Ghostface Killah, CSS, Rhye and Quadron. Following-up on our open invitation in the Clutchy Hopkins interview that never happened, Todd contacted us saying "I'd love to compile a specially-themed dj mix for you (as mentioned in the Clutchy interview, figure out a theme and I'll hook you all up!!!". We asked him if he was into the current American Dub and Reggae scene… Well Todd did a real investigative work, adding some information on each track he picked, and we had the full thing illustrated by our man Ben Hito, for your aural and visual pleasure. I've been following posts and releases from Paris DJs for quite some time. Their eclectic tastes in World Music, DJ culture and new music have been a great resource for me over the years. Although I'm not that proud of the country I reside in, the US does supply some great Dub sounds. 'The United States of Dub' is a collection that features rarities only found on vinyl, brand new recordings that are finally being leaked, versions that might have been looked over and tracks that I've dug up from my vaults. Some of America's best Dub producers are showcased on this mix representing a sound that pays respect to Jamaica and the UK. One might not look to the US for Dub, but hopefully after listening to this mix you might want to dig deeper. (Todd Simon) Tracklisting : 01. Paris DJs Soundsystem & Ping Pong Promotion present Blues Ain't Nothin' But A Low-Down Shakin' Chill
Paris DJs Soundsystem - Blues Ain't Nothin' But A Low-Down Shakin' Chill (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-10-14 This mix started as a monthly Bag of Goodies, checking the stack of new records and the playlist of digital downloads we received during the past month. Then a trend emerged, some overall bluesy feeling that permeated many of those new albums and singles. We gradually got deep into a 21st century blues kind of vibe, through many music styles. One can wonder if the global economic crisis might be affecting today's music producers… or if it's just the rise of another cycle in music trends? There was a huge rock copycats period, new wave hit electro music quite hard before it went nu disco on many, and hip hop has gone mainstream. That was the late 70s and the whole 80s all over again. So what's next? A comeback of mid-1990s trip-hop? Well at Paris DJs we just call it the Blues. Nothin' but a low-down shakin' chill. Kid Koala just released a full album of scratching blues trickery on Ninja Tune. Meshell Ndegeocello's going back to her roots with an album of Nina Simone covers. Menahan Street Band gem of a second album is music to an unreleased Sergio Leone western starring the Wu Tang set in 1992 as their leader Thomas Brenneck puts it. Former Metronomy-member Gabriel Stebbing returns to the scene as Night Works with a plaintive and soulful R&B ballad. Grant Phabao filters the southern-fried, psychedelic funk of Adrian Quesada's The Echocentrics through Jamaican gospel. Hidden Orchestra reinvents chill-out with their textural groove and head-nodding experiences. Doctor L notes that We Got Lost along the way and goes back to folk/blues songs with his unique trippy style. Lukid amazes with his soulful/ambient electronic pop. Ghana-based singer/songwriter Andrew Ashong enlists the help of Detroit techno/Chicago sound sculptor Theo Parrish for some romantic beats and soulful ballads. Singer/songwriter Jesse Boykins III and producer/emcee Melo-X join forces as Zulu Guru, bringing together a new electronic sound rooted in soul and blues. Studio One veteran Carlton Livingston starts putting on his soulful reggae songs some soul jazz dressings thanks to Parisian sound master Grant Phabao. And jazz drummer Karriem Riggins pays tribute to James 'J Dilla' Yancey's percussive blend of cosmic soul… Do you feel it? Tracklisting : 01. Quantic - Cumbia 78 RPM MIx
Quantic - Cumbia 78 RPM (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-28 To conclude Soundway Records' 10th anniversary celebration on Paris DJs all summer long, special guest Will Holland a.k.a. Quantic has prepared a unique and stylish mix of 78 RPM Colombian Cumbia! The famous producer/musician & DJ based out of his Cali, Colombia studio, Sonido del Valle, never stops working and touring. Hot on the heels of his impressive Original Sound of Cumbia compilation of colombian Cumbia & Porro 1948-1979 (Soundway), he put out earlier this year a marvelous collaboration album with Alice Russell Look Around The Corner (Tru Thoughts), and launched this summer the new all-star Colombian band Ondatrópica, with Mario Galeano of Frente Cumbiero. Their debut album was released this summer on Soundway Records. Thanks to Joss Yerbury at Kartel Creative for helping us build this series of 4 mixes. Happy 10 years to Soundway Records, let's hope for more decades like this first ones! You can still enjoy Chris Menist' Leftfield Sunshine mix, Batida's Tirei O Chapéu mixtape, or Miles Cleret's Nigerian Rock selection. Thanks again to all for participating. Paris DJs Soundsystem - 21st Century Hammond Vol.1 (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-21 Forget about Jimmy Smith, Reuben Wilson, Jimmy McGriff or Dr. Lonnie Smith for a while and meet the new masters of the Hammond B3 in this often violent, mean and sick mix. Chris Menist - Leftfield Sunshine
Chris Menist - Leftfield Sunshine (MP3 Podcast on www.ParisDJs.com) 2012-08-18 Chris Menist is already a legend in our books with his mind-blowing Thai compilations on Soundway Records and Finders Keepers. We had the chance to invite him in April 2011 to celebrate his Sound of Siam and Thai? Dai comps and he gladly accepted our invitation to celebrate Soundway Records 10th anniversary with a new exclusive mix. "It's a kind of left field-tropical selection, featuring quite a few artists Soundway have had on their records over the years, but with different tracks by them, not the ones that were compiled necessarily. Hope it's a fitting nod to the label's 10th year." says Chris. Enjoy this dish of rare world grooves! Tracklisting : 01.
