Today on the 5: I randomly checked on how the Frasier reboot was going, and apparently the answer is not that well. There are lots of opinions on why, but in my opinion the most prominent theories have it backward and point to my biggest issue with reboots and revivals.

Today on the 5: After my 5 on Google's pointless "Apple copied us!" ad, I started wondering what would make a person change what phone OS they use right now. After seeing the image used on this 9to5MAC article, I feel like product design might be the last thing that could work.

Today on the 5: As part of an upcoming episode of Len Kabasinski's Forgotten Movie Den series, I watched a film from 1988 titled Nightmare At Noon . Apart from an ending that fumbles the energy of the movie just slightly, this one is an absolute blast of a good time!

Today on the 5: On top of increasing game prices and moving games towards digital downloads, Nintendo has recently announced they will have the capability to brick consoles violating their EULA policies. Right now those policies seem aimed at preventing piracy, which is at least defensible. The problem is, this also requires you to trust the company not to change those policies in the future to include far less defensible violations.

Today on the 5: The book selection for the next TWiT book club event is The Word For World Is Forest by a giant of science fiction, Ursula K. Le Guin. I recrently finished reading the book in prep for that event, and it was pretty good!

Today on the 5: Over the weekend I watched a movie that looked like it couldn't possibly be any good. It's titled Desperate Teenage Lovedolls, and it was every bit as awful as I expected. Outside of pure comedy value, it does have one potentially redeeming aspect.

Today on the 5: 9to5Mac ran a piece aimed at a recent Google Pixel ad. The main criticism was about the lack of humor and bluntness of the ad. While those complaints are definitely true that's not the biggest issue with the spot.

Today on the 5: I've talked more than a few times about my reluctance to use all-on-one devices, and I've also done a few 5s about leaving Roku behind years ago. Nothing has changed in respect to those decisions, but a recent story about Roku TVs breaking after a bad update requires a repeat warning for listeners!

Today on the 5: I haven't watched the 1984 film Streets Of Fire since the early days of the show before we really did movie reviews. Lando had never seen it, so we watch it as our movie selection for the Friday show. Streets Of Fire is a fun film, but it has one major flaw that holds it back from being as good as it could have been.

Today on the 5: After reading about another stupid thing Nintendo is doing to pre-emptively punish their fanbase and the moronic announcement from language app Duolingo, something occurred to me. I should really be thanking these companies, because they're forcing me to save my money!

Today on the 5: I recently came across a game that sounds like it may be stunningly up my alley. It's a TTRPG titled VOID 1680 AM, and it appears to combine my love of live radio and weird fiction in a package that I am very curious to try out.

Today on the 5: Last week I was part of a Club Twit event and the topic of the environmental cost of generative tools came up towards the end. Host Anthony Nielsen made a reasonable point that the cost of thesee tools has little difference to running a high end computer at home. After thinking about it for a bit, I feel there is a difference, albeit an indirect one.

Today on the 5: If you watch baseball via the MLB.tv streaming service, you may have noticed something that has become worse over the last few years. In the desperate bid to dump as much advertising into every square inch of what you see, the league is spreading visual garbage all over.

Today on the 5: For a while now, the only movies that seemed to make any money tended to be bloated budget IP rehashes or reboots. Blockbuster and sequel fatigue finally appear to be working on those too, so the success of an original film that cost under $100 million to make is good news to me!

Today on the 5: I saw news that a years long project to present a more polished version of Alien ³ had released their cut of the divisive film. Lando and I checked it out, and it's absolutely the best version of the movie either of us have seen.

Today on the 5: Aftermath recently ran a great article talking about why the work put into animation deserves more recognition. As someone who has often said this art form is criminally overlooked, I couldn't agree more.

Today on the 5: I saw a list of books that were recommended for fans of the AppleTV series Severance. and thought I'd have a look for something new to read. One of them, also titled Severance, has next to nothing to do with the show but sounded interesting anyway. I've read it, and it has definitely stuck with me.

Today on the 5: Late last year a fantastic art book was released titled WipEout Futurism: The Graphic Archives. It's one of the best art books I've ever seen, and it details just about as much as you could reasonably hope for in covering one of the lovingly designed video game series around.

Today on the 5: I've always loved the title of the manga / anime series Silent Möbius, but I actually checked any of it out because the subject matter just didn't seem like my thing. Someone posted a clip of the first movie in one of the many Discords I hang around, and that finally got me to watch the 2 movies. Yet again, I slept on something really good!

Today on the 5: You may have heard that there is a bit of a trade war happening with the US right now. One potential benefit of this game of tariff chicken might be that people examine how they buy things. Not something I feel was intentiional, but that's how unintended consequences work sometimes.

Today on the 5: Rebellion recently released their first non Sniper Elite game in quite a few years, a survival action game titled Atomfall. While comparisons to Fallout are somewyat ninevitable, this game stands out by having a setting and atmosphere I don't get see very often.

Today on the 5: After years of terrible releases missing the proper music, you can now watch Northern Exposure as it should be seen. Despite what reviews will try to tell you, it still holds up beginning to end.

Today on the 5: You may have noticed that a lot of people thank their chatbots or talk to them in a way that makes it clear they're appreciative of their results. There are some who do this thinking it might protect them from a possible future AI uprising, and I'm honestly baffled they think that would work.

Today on the 5: A few months back I talked about my hope that the open sourcing of the PebbleOS might lead to a return of that magnificent watch. Amazingly, it's happening and I can't wait!

Today on the 5: There are reportedly some big shakeups happening inside of Apple after some of their Apple Intelligence projects failed to meet expectations. To me, the most interesting part of these stories is how they show the company allowing itself to deviate from its usual path.

Today on the 5: In a scenario that Philip K. Dick would surely appreciate, I misremembered having read the novel Ubik before. I just finished what I thought was a second reading of the well known book and by the time I finished I realized I had mixed it up with another book. Fitting!

Today on the 5: After comments made by Sean Baker at the Oscars, I've been hearing a lot of movie folks saying that studio films must have a theatrical run before they hit streaming services. Some even suggest that there should be a 3 or 4 week theater exclusivity window. I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is one of the more asinine opinions out there.

Today on the 5: One of the extras I really looked forward to in the Quartet Of Torment boxset from Arrow was a new workprint of Hellraiser: Bloodline. While I wish it was in better quality, it's undoubtedly a better version of the film compared to what was released theatrically. Best part? You can watch it for free!

Today on rhe 5: Thanks to a listener suggestiuon, Lando and I watched a movie that we had both somehow missed from 2021 titled Zone 414. If you only went by the first 15 minutes and a lot of user revfiews, you'd likely write it off as a low budget Blade Runner clone. Stick with it, because it becomes it's own thing pretty quickly.

Today on the 5: You may remember there was a kerfuffle a little while back over the use of AI tools in correcting the language deficiencies in the film The Brutalist. There were even calls for the film should be disqualified from Oscars consideration. Honestly, I feel like the negative reactions in this case are misguided.
