He’s been on an amazing, transformational journey in that time: he’s lost over 85 pounds in weight, and recently completed a self supported Ironman in memory of his Mum, who sadly passed away from cancer 25 years earlier. 379 Richard Murray - From Cardiac Care to Podium
Richard Murray has had one of the most decorated triathlon careers - double World Junior duathlon champion, double African Triathlon champion, multiple ITU World Series event winner, Commonwealth Games Bronze medalist, and 4th place at the Olympic games in 2016. However, 8 weeks before the 2020 Olympics (in summer 2021), things changed in an instant for Richard during a swim session where he could feel things were not right, with his heart racing and beating erratically during his warm up. He was taken immediately to hospital and subsequently diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation, a condition where the heart loses it’s ability to regulate how fast it beats. He underwent heart surgery in an attempt to cure the condition and be ready in time for the Olympics. This is Richard’s story, in his own words for the first time, of recovering from cardiac care and his return to health and racing. Pip Paxman took up triathlon as a way to get her sporting fix after leaving university and missing netball and hockey. 363 Sara Svensk - from Covid hospital bed to Ironman Champion!
Sara Svensk won Ironman Cozumel 2021 in a new Ironman-branded World Record of 8.22.:40. This would be incredible enough, but, as we’ll hear in the interview, she did this on less than four months of training! After contracting Covid in May, Sara had ongoing health problems, including heart problems that ECG indicated could have been related to a heart attack. Following 6 week of no training at all, and numerous medical investigations, she was given the all clear to return to gentle training, and, 4 months later, was able to produce that incredible performance in Mexico. I hope this interview gives hope to anyone struggling with a health condition that it is possible to return to full health and fitness! 362 Age Group Story: James Hall
James Hall completed his first triathlon in his late 40’s, after one of his clients challenged him to enter an Etape sportif, and in his own words, he loved it. Inspired to take up swimming with a Master’s group rather than sit and watch his children train in the pool, he combined his love of swimming and cycling, added running, and set himself the goal of completing an Olympic distance race in 2019. Completing that in just under 3 hours, he was inspired to see what he was capable of with a structured training plan and coaching support. That’s where he met Team Oxygenaddict :) Despite a very busy life working in financial services in the City of London that means he’s at his desk at 6.30 every day after a 5am get-up, we learn how he fits training, and most importantly, recovery and sleep into his life, and how this has taken him to qualifying for the World Triathlon sprint championships, and completing his first middle distance races at Outlaw X and Outlaw Half Holkham.
