LSU has fired their defensive coordinator and Bo asks Dave about what a good play caller could mean for the team. Dave talks about how LSU had the second best offense in the country but their defense needed to be at least top 20 in order for them to be a playoff team. 1-4-24 Larry Bowa (Full): Pete Rose Not Being in HOF, Cut three times from HS team, Learned to Switch-hit in AAA
MLB legend and five-time Allstar Larry Bowa who won a world series both as a player and then as a coach joins the show on the Farm Bureau guest line. Bo asks Larry about his start in baseball, and the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Famer says he was cut three times from his high school team because of his size. He got signed to JUCO through summer ball and from there worked his way to the minors then the majors. Never thought about quitting because of his dad who was a minor league player with over 2,000 hits and never got drafted. Bo asked him when he realized he could have a career, and Larry said it was in the minor leagues. He was told he could be a major league utility player, but if he could learn to switch-hit, he would be an everyday player in AAA, so that is what he did and hit around .270-.280 as a switch-hitter. Bo asks Larry when he was with the Phillies when did they realize they were going to be good. Larry says that in the mid 70s they started to play really good but were still missing something. The missing piece was Pete Rose. At that point Dallas Green took over and that is what led them to where they were in the 1980s. After a tough series with Houston, Bowa felt there was really no pressure on them going in the World Series at that point. Bo asks if he still talks to Pete Rose. Larry says he sees him a good bit and that he believes Rose is at peace with not being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Bo wants to know what Mike Schmidt was like as a player and a personality.
