S4 Ep 11Now live: Watches and Wonders 2023, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, TAG Heuer and more

In a move surprising absolutely no one, this week's episode is all about Watches & Wonders 2023. Felix is on the ground, wheeling, dealing - and serving up the fresh news and hottest takes from the fair! Recorded earlier this week, Felix and Andy discuss the blue chip releases from the big brands. Andy gives us the view from afar on the bold moves from Rolex, and the less dramatic Patek novelties. Felix gives his very early impressions on Tudor's new Black Bay's and the very impressive suite of new Carreras coming out of TAG Heuer. Finally, before Felix's voice gave out on him entirely, there was some brief chat about Cartier and other highlights. This week's episode is brought to you by TAG Heuer, who are celebrating 60 years of the iconic Carrara. Find out more about this legendary chronograph here. S4 Ep 10Rebecca Struthers (Struthers Watchmakers) on the hand-made watches and her book, Hands of Time

We've spoken to our share of UK-based watchmakers over the years, and one name that kept popping up was Struthers Watchmaking. So it was somewhat inevitable that we would speak to them at some point. We chatted to Dr Rebecca Struthers, one half of Struthers Watchmaking, about how she ended up as a watchmaker, and more importantly, where she's taking it — specifically the gorgeous and exclusive Project 248. But it's not just watches that Rebecca crafts, she's also on the eve of publishing Hands of Time, A Watchmakers History of Time, which takes us through 40,000-odd years of timekeeping with precision and style. S4 Ep 9Giles Ellis (Schofield Watches) on design, identity and brand building

Today we chat with Giles Ellis, the infectiously passionate founder of Schofield Watches. Ellis has been making his distinctively-cased watches since 2010. Ellis started making watches for the best possible reason — he was looking for a watch he wanted to wear, and nothing on the market at the time was *quite* right, so he made his own. The brand came about organically after that, and Ellis has stuck to his design principles since then. We also chat to Ellis about why UK watchmaking has the appeal and cachet that it does, and what a watch inspired by Japan looks like. Before that, Felix and Andy chat about why the latest MoonSwatch is an object lesson in hype management and why Mr Porter's list of the best watch podcasts is on the money. S4 Ep 8Stijn Busschaert (Méraud Watches) on NOS movements and classic designs

Recently Andy has been raving about a well-sized, vintage-inspired chronograph that's had a firm place on his wrist for the last few weeks: The Antigua from Méraud Watches. So it only made sense to get the founder of this boutique Belgian brand — Stijn Busschaert — on for a chat. Stijn tells us how passion led him to start his own brand, and how a burgeoning new wave of online independents has supercharged the space. Of course, we also dig into the details of the Antigua, in particular the vintage Landeron 248 movements Stijn sourced, to ensure a pure spirit and slim profile. Plus, an unlikely Unimatic collab and possible big corporate moves. Interested in spicy takes with zero fakes? Join our Discord . S4 Ep 7Battlebots, Majeteks, Panerai and the latest news in watches

It's not just the Australian weather that's heating up — things in watchland are getting buzzier than Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie. Andy and Felix have been partying down with Panerai, and Felix finally caught up with the charming and erudite founder of Fears Watches, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, as well as get the low down on a new kind of dive watch. Beyond that, Louis Vuitton calls on the power of celebrity for its latest Creative Director, and Hodinkee gets sexy, but not just with Ben Clymer and Kevin Hart. S4 Ep 6Anders (@everydaycollector) on the mighty Rolex Midas and collecting with style

After years of low-key stalking, a royal stack of Rolex Midas models was all it took for Felix to invite Anders, AKA @everydaycollector onto the pod. Anders, hailing from sunny Norway has a stunning collection of watches, including the aforementioned Rolex. On top of that, there's vintage Cartier, Royal Oaks, Vacheron Constantin 222s and more. All these watches are incredibly hot right now, but Anders has been ahead of the curve. We talk about approaches to collecting, design watches and what it's like to be the world's first Aeropress world champion. Like your watches with a dash of community inclusion? Try our Discord . S4 Ep 5Brand new Audemars Piguet, Omega gets technical and bioceramic Bond

We're officially one-twelfth of the way through the year, and the watch releases are coming thick and fast — just like Andy's love of the new 37mm Royal Oak in yellow gold with a turquoise dial. Honestly, he hasn't been so excited about a watch since Rolex released a watch with a turquoise dial. Maybe it's just turquoise. Aside from AP, there's also the new chonky Speedy hiding impressive innovation inside. Then there are the Daniel Craig Conspiracy theories. What more do you need? S4 Ep 4Phil Toledano (Mister Enthusiast) on sculptural cases, collecting and cars

It's been a long time since UK-born, NYC-residing visual artist and all-around geezer Phil Toledano, AKA Mister Enthusiast, graced OT: — too long, honestly. We started our interview with a clear direction and purpose, to grill him about weird cars, oddball watches and the latest trends in jumpsuits, but our conversation quickly veered very left of centre. Sure, we spoke to Phil about many of these topics, as well as his upcoming watch venture, the fabled four-way collab and his love of all things Italian. S4 Ep 3Nick Federowicz (Ad Patina) on the art of watch advertising

As if watches weren't niche enough. Today we dive into the vintage watch ad rabbit hole with Nick Federowicz, better known by his online persona of Ad Patina. Nick makes a living scouring the world for old copies of obscure magazines and finding the nostalgic treasures encased within. Not only do these ads offer a period-correct glimpse of our favourite watches, they shine a light on the world in which they were created, and show us just how much it has changed. Nick explains to us that while these ads show us the watches, what they really offer is a glimpse into the past. On top of all that, Felix and Andy talk through some of their favourite new releases, including the standouts of LVMH Watch Week, and the re-launched Cartier Tank Française, but more on that next week. S4 Ep 2Kim Frank on exploring, elephants and wearing Rolex in the field

Kim Frank wears many hats. She's a writer, editor and explorer. In fact, she's a fellow at the Explorers Club and was recently the recipient of the Explorers Club Rolex Award. Kim tells us exactly what this is, what it entails and what it's really like to wear a Rolex while working on stories about how Asian elephants co-exist with humans in the Eastern Himalayas. We also learn about her love of other old watches, old cars and some lessons from a life well travelled. But before that meaningful content, Andy and Felix discuss wrestlers turned actors, glass onions and the dream of the four-way watch collab. Like your watches with a dash of community inclusion? S4 Ep 1Victoria Gomelsky on what to expect in 2023 from watches

Happy New Year, everyone! We're kicking off 2023 in fine form with none other than veteran watch and jewellery writer Victoria Gomelsky. It seems like every other week, one of us is referencing one of Victoria's excellent articles for The New York Times, Robb Report or one of the other excellent titles Victoria writes for. So we pretty much had to get her on, and we are so glad we did. From what trade publications can teach you about the business of watches and how watches and jewellery intersect. Throughout all of it, we get Victoria's take on macro trends, through to what's hot (or not) in watches, from sustainability and lab-grown stones, and what a slowing global economy might mean for the business of watches. S3 Ep 49Sleeper hits and the near misses of 2022

It's December, which means it's time for us to look back on the year that was (and think about the year that will be). So we thought we'd take, as inspiration, a year old Robb Report wrap of industry predictions from the likes of Kelly Yoch, William Massena and more and grade them for how well they turned out. Don't worry; pretty much everyone passed. Not content with that, Felix looks to the future and wonders what we'll be talking about next year, including interesting indies and, yes, Franck Muller. S3 Ep 48Mark Cho (The Armoury) on selling his watch collection

So much of the discussion in the watch space is around the acquisition of new watches. Yet the other untold side of the story is that for every watch bought, another is sold. Mark Cho (The Armoury) is balancing the scales. He's selling off the bulk of his collection to fund the expansion of his business, The Armoury, and he's doing it through Phillips. Rather than anonymously consign his watches, Mark has made a custom site – called The Beauty in Everything – showcasing the watches and some of the stories behind them. Even if you're not in the market for a new watch, it's well worth having a look at Mark's significant and very tasteful collection. None of Mark Cho's watches came on Artem straps. S3 Ep 46John Buckley on Rolex dials, watch deals and cracking TikTok

Today's guest, John Buckley, casts a long shadow over the world of vintage Rolex. He's a veteran of the New York watch scene who has seen trends come and hype go, which makes the fact that he's TikTok famous somewhat surprising. Buckley's TikTok's follow him on his visits to the dealers of 47th street and gives you a glimpse into the behind-the-scenes wheeling and dealing of watches far removed from the white glove service of the boutique environment. Gem-set Daytonas sit in plastic pouches, waiting to be plucked out by John, who will inevitably ask, "how much is this $60,000 watch." S3 Ep 42October News – New Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, plus Apple Ultra v Google Pixel

What does it say about the state of the luxury watch business when two of the world's pre-eminent Australian-based podcast-hosting watch experts are more into releases from Apple and Google than Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet? We're not sure, but that doesn't stop us from diving into it. Yes, we talk about the new Patek releases, AKA the Stern family edging well-heeled watch nerds with overpriced steel sports watches (as well as some genuinely cool stuff), and Audemars Piguet's 800-stone monochromatic gem-coated flex set. Really though, we had a lot more fun with the smartwatches. Andy has been rocking the Apple Watch Ultra for a while, and it's changed his relationship with smartwatches. S3 Ep 41Stan Barrett, Hollywood stunt legend on being the fastest man alive and his friend Paul Newman

This week, our episode lasts about an hour, and to be honest, we only scratch the surface of the stories our guest, Stan Barrett, has to tell. Not only has Stan lived a remarkable life — a stuntman with over 50 years of experience. He's also a race car driver who, in 1979, strapped into the Budweiser rocket car and broke the speed of sound — becoming the fastest man on the land. But naturally, our conversation drifted to his friend and colleague Paul Newman. Stan worked as Paul's stunt double in many movies, and they became fast friends. S3 Ep 40Reuben Schoots, the Australian watchmaker building a watch in his garage

Australia is about as far away from the watchmaking centres of the world as it's possible to get. That hasn't stopped Reuben Schoots, hailing from our nations capital, from learning the art, and building his own watch, from scratch. Several years ago, while Schoots was recovering from chronic illnesses he picked up while travelling, he was introduced to the world of mechanical watches and dived in head-first. Like many people newly enamoured with the topic, he picked up a copy of George Daniels' Watchmaking. Unlike many people he understood it. More than that, he undertook his own Daniels-inspired watchmaking project. This led to an interest in tool-making and, later, CNC technology. Next thing you know, Schoots has pre-sold six pieces from his first series, and watchmaking in Australia might very well be about to enter a new era. S3 Ep 38Carson Chan on the future of the watch industry and GPHG

In the middle of our chat with Carson Chan, Chief Advisor to the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie, he makes a bold claim — that no other type of object has changed from the category of 'need' to the category of 'want' as profoundly as the wristwatch. Since recording the call, Andy and Felix have been wracking their brains for a better answer – but still haven't come up with one. This insight is one of Carson's many pearls of wisdom. We also speak about his role at the FHH, the state of collecting, the future of the industry and how to improve the GPHG. This week Andy and Felix catch up with Neha Bajpai, a veteran of the watch journalism biz who's currently looking after Wristcheck's editorial. Neha shares her experience in watches — including her deep and abiding love for the recently released Moser Streamliner Vantablack Tourbillon in Red Gold. More than that, we find out the sort of stories that Neha loves to write and why commerce-based sites are writing (arguably) better watch stories than watch news sites. We also get a crash course on the Indian watch scene and find out why Breguet is such a big deal in India. Looking for less loops? Find them at Artem Straps — here. S4 Ep 36Nicolas Bos, CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels on storytelling in time — plus, are watches boring?

This week we talk about two extremes in watchmaking. First, Andy and Felix ponder the theory that 2022 might actually be one of the most unexciting years on record when it comes to watch releases. Secondly, Felix speaks to a man who directly contradicts this claim — CEO and Creative Director of Van Cleef & Arpels, Mr Nicolas Bos. Van Cleef & Arpel's watchmaking is less concerned with the passing of minutes and seconds and more about creating emotion. This is why, in the world of VC&A's poetic storytelling, you're likely to find the time being told with a flower or the wing of a fairy. We chat to Mr Bos about the importance of this approach and the brand's Extraordinary Objects, one-off creations that combine high jewellery skills, timekeeping and automata that definitely live up to the name. Artem Straps , they're for daddies. Find them here. Want to debate the merits of boring watches? Join our Discord and do it. S3 Ep 35Jacek Kozubek (Tropical Watch) on vintage watches, life lessons and the cheesiest Rolex out there

Our conversation with veteran vintage watch dealer Jacek Kozubek starts off strong as we dive into the finer point of the perfect Hawaiian shirt. From that point on, we get a little more on-topic and find out what it takes to become a vintage watch dealer and, more importantly, what it takes to sustain it for 14 years. From market highs and occasional lows, it's clear Jacek is in it for the long haul, talking to us about the realities of dealing and imparting some hard-earned watch-collecting wisdom. Plus, he tells us about some of the weirdest areas of Rolex collecting, like fast-food Airkings and the Ttridor watches — for when three tones are better than two. This episode is sponsored by TAG Heuer. Listen in to find out Andy's thoughts on the TAG Heuer Connected x Porsche Edition, and find out how it pairs with the Porsche Taycan. S3 Ep 34Christian-Louis Col from Ikepod on Kanye West and reviving an icon

One of the late 20th century's most distinctive watch designs comes from the design-led brand Ikepod, founded by Marc Newson. Today we speak with the current owner and custodian of this cult brand, Christian-Louis Col. Col, who talks about Ikepod's history and significance as a concept watch and how it became of the first 'it' watches of the silicon valley set. We also chatted about his future plans for the brand and how Kanye West wearing a gold Ikepod on the cover of GQ wasn't a viral marketing dream come true. Artem Straps , perfect for your next trip. S3 Ep 33Gordon Dundas (Glengoyne) on whisky, watches and what links the two

Time for a taste of something a little different. No watches this week, only whisky. We speak to Gordon Dundas, a whisky industry veteran who is International Brand Ambassador for Ian Macleod Distillers, responsible for well-known (and well-aged) Glengoyne. We find out from Gordon why time and place make whisky such a special drink, and learn a little about the business of whisky. And it's a business with (perhaps) surprising parallels to watches in terms of the importance of heritage and tradition, but also when it comes to the challenges facing the business in 2022. Certainly, both industries are increasingly global, and growing interest has led to vexing issues of supply and demand. So, settle in for a fascinating chat about the wonderful world of whisky. It's not a role you step into without living, breathing (and most likely dreaming), Carreras, Autavias and all the rest. S3 Ep 27What if ... Elon Musk bought Patek, Subs went out of style and other hypotheticals

This week we dusted off the (sapphire) crystal ball and gazed into the multiverse of madness, and played out some hypothetical watch scenarios. What if Rolex doubled production in a few years? Could Apple make a mechanical watch? Will sports watches ever go out of style, and what would it take for Andy to buy a Seahawk. In this light-hearted rundown of (mostly) unlikely situations, we play out the scenarios, to mixed success. You can't venture too deep into the waters of vintage Tudor without coming across Ross Povey. His love for the brand that was once seen as Rolex's 'little brother' stemmed from seeing quirky, colourful dials of vintage Tudor chronographs and from there, things escalated quickly. Povey talks to us about the rapid renaissance of the once-forgotten brand, and what they got right at Watches & Wonders 2022. In this week's episode, Andy chats to R.T. Custer, the man behind one of the most interesting American watch brands, Vortic. We find out how a college project into American-made turned into a viable business which almost didn't make it because of a prolonged legal battle with one of the Swiss industry giants. In 2020, Vortic walked away from the five-year legal battle as the victor, and has wasted no time getting down to business, upcycling old pocketwatches into new wrist-friendly watches. Andy finds out about the realities of preserving the great era of American watchmaking and some of the lessons RT Custer has learned along the way. S3 Ep 15Zoe Abelson (@watchgirloffduty) on life as a watch dealer, and always being on duty

Zoe Abelson, AKA @watchgirloffduty, is one of the internet's best-known watch dealers. With a feed comprising of colourful, quirky watches in often exotic locales, it's easy to assume that being an international watch dealer is a non-stop glamour fest. And while Zoe doesn't exactly disprove the notion, she tells us about the decade of non-stop work in some of the world's most well-respected watch businesses that led her to step out on her own and start Graal Limited. We also find out about the finer points of sourcing a specific watch, as well as what sort of requests she can't stand. All that, plus a dash of F1 and a spritz of Spice Girls, make this an unmissable episode. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. Head into your local boutique to check out the new Navitimer, or head to breitling.com and buy it online. S3 Ep 14Our take on Watches and Wonders 2022

The proverbial dust has settled on Watches and Wonders, which, by all accounts was a successful return to form for the watch fair. This week, Andy and Felix talk through the highlights (and some of the more controversial releases) from the comfort of their own homes. Breitling's 70th anniversary relaunch of the Navitimer in the skies of Switzerland kicked affairs off, followed by a flurry of eyebrow-raising releases from Rolex, Patek Philippe and others. Tudor and TAG Heuer did well and Cartier crushed it as per usual. Finally Felix and Andy pick their early faves from the fair, with Andy keeping it humble in platinum and Felix fell in love with the elegance of solar power. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. Head into your local boutique to check out the new Navitimer, or head to breitling.com and buy it online. Oh, and Felix is also (still) in love with his Artem Strap — check them out here. S3 Ep 13Breitling's CEO Georges Kern on the new Navitimer and the need to keep adapting

Earlier this week, Breitling took to the skies (literally) to relaunch the iconic Navitimer, a watch that, 70 years ago, defined the pilot's watch with its functionality and purpose. Today though, we chat to the man who masterminded the relaunch, Breitling CEO Georges Kern. Kern has, throughout his long career in the watch business, been a dynamic leader with a strong vision of what a successful watch brand looks like. Felix finds out how in a few short years, he's steered the brand into its most authentic expression yet, and how the Navitimer has maintained its relevance in an era of ubiquitous technology. On top of that, we get Mr Kern's take on the state of supply, demand and the watch market. Before that though, Andy and Felix chat about MoonSwatch drama, Tiffany's questionable NFTs and what it's like on the ground in Geneva. This episode is sponsored by Breitling. Head into your local boutique to check out the new Navitimer, or head to breitling.com and buy it online. Oh, and Felix is also (still) in love with his Artem Strap — check them out here. S3 Ep 12Michelle Ciesielski (Knight Frank) on investments of passion, plus bad vegans and Hodinkee's new CEO

Today we chat with Michelle Ciesielski, Head of Residential Research at Knight Frank Australia, about their annual wealth report, which gives us a detailed overview of what Australia's 20k or so ultra-high net worth individuals spend their coin on. Turns out they're spending it on watches, whiskey and other investments of passion more than ever before, and Michelle tells us the investment is paying off. On top of that, there's change at the top of watch media's 10,000-pound gorilla, as Hodinkee announces a new CEO and OT's very own good vegan Andy give us straight sauce on some bad vegans. This episode is sponsored by Edifice Watches. This week Andy and Felix chat about the versatile EFV140D-3A. Check it out here. Want to be part of the OT: The Podcast community? Join our Discord!
