Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Specials 4 & Feb 11 S2-EP6 Trailer

Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Specials 4 & Feb 11 S2-EP6 Trailer Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: S2-EP6 Cassandra Do & Lien Pham Trailer Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations and I’m here to tell you about our next episode of Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast, coming this Sunday, February 11. On August 25, 2003, Cassandro Do, 32, was found in her bathtub sexually assaulted and murdered in her 60 Glouster Street apartment in Toronto by police who were responding to a call. An autopsy showed she was manually strangled. She had been scheduled to meet a client that day. Do, a preoperative transsexual who had once worked as a nurse, was saving money for her operation, and working as a prostitute in the Village. Do, who also went by the name Tula, solicited clients on her website and ads in the back of weekly Toronto newspapers. Do’s death occurred within days of two other women’s deaths, prompting concerns from citizens and the media. The body of Lien Pham, a prostitute, who's working names were May-ling and/or Kim, was found at her apartment at 24 Mabelle Ave., Apt. #1817, in Toronto, on Monday, October 13, 2003. Mayling was strangled. There are similiarities to the death of Cassandra Do. Both were Asian, both were strangled, both were incalls and both were found dead in their bathtubs. Also neither women's apartment building had video surveillance in the lobbies. After a description of Cassandra Do's killer had been reported on CFTO TV on October 6, 2003, four pro's contacted the station to report that they too, had been beaten and sexually attacked by a guy meeting the description of the suspect from the broadcast. As of today, neither murder has been solved despite DNA evidence. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Tracy Bruney At 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14th, 1975, a teenage boy walking through Marie Curtis Park found the body of 5-year-old Tracey Ann Bruney in 18 inches of water near a bridge in Etobicoke Creek, 15 km from the youngster’s home. She had died of drowning, but there were cuts and bruises all over her head and neck from a beating administered by her killer. An autopsy showed she had not been sexually assaulted. She was last seen alive by her mother at 9a.m., when she was dropped off at St. Clare Catholic School on Northcliffe Blvd. On the weekend, Tracey’s purse was found in a yard on Northcliffe Blvd., suggesting someone forcefully pulled her into a car near the school. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Simon Wilson Nine-year-old Simon Wilson of Willowridge Rd. in Rexdale, a northwestern section of Toronto, disappeared on Wednesday, January 29th, 1975 while walking to his school, Parkfield Elementary, which is on Redgrave Dr., less than 1 km from his home. Simon was described by his parents as very independent and adventurous, and in the initial days there were fears he had either fallen into shallow Mimico Creek, which runs behind his home, or was playing hide-and-seek with searchers in the area’s extensive sewer tunnel system. Searchers heard voices in the tunnels, but could not locate their origin. Despite weeks of exhaustive searching by police and volunteers, no trace of Simon Wilson was ever found. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Cheryl Hanson On Friday, May 31st, 1974, seven-year-old Cheryl Hanson vanished while walking east along Bloomington Sideroad near Yonge St. in the town of Aurora, about 35 km north of downtown Toronto. Her parents had permitted her to walk to her cousin’s house for a sleepover, and the little girl left her home at about 6:30 p.m. Her route from her home to her cousin’s would have taken her about one kilometre east along Bloomington Rd., at the time a dirt road dotted with the odd residence or farm. Despite massive searches, no trace of Cheryl was ever found, however the presumption is she was murdered. In 1976, a mental patient locked up for other crimes against young women confessed to murdering her, but his story was unable to be verified. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP5 Sandy LeBlanc

Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP5 Sandy LeBlanc He was stabbed more than 100 times. Was Sandy LeBlanc the victim of another Toronto Village serial killer? Seven unsolved murders connected to Toronto’s Village from 1975 to 1978 all have similarities: each showed extreme, up-close violence, in which the men were stabbed, strangled or beaten. Whoever killed nightclub manager, Alexander (Sandy) Romeo LeBlanc, clearly wanted to hurt him as deeply as possible. LeBlanc, 29, was stabbed more than 100 times and severely beaten before his body was found by friends on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 20, 1978, in his apartment at 16 St. Joseph Court (now Street). His home was near Studio II, a disco he ran in the Village. Please consider subscribing to Ontario Cold Cases – The Podcast on Patreon, Spotify, YouTube or Apple Podcasts. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Feb 4 Trailer & Specials 3

Specials 3 & Feb 4 Trailer S2-EP5 Sandy LeBlanc (Trailer) Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations and I’m here to tell you about our next episode of Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast, coming this Sunday, February 4. He was stabbed more than 100 times. His home was near Studio II, a disco he ran in the Village. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Judy Carter The mysterious after-school disappearance of 8-year-old Judy Carter on Feb. 25, 1955 would lead to a search dubbed the “greatest ever carried out in Toronto,’’ by police of the day. Little Judy had been missing for 10 days when a search party of 500 people — firefighters, off-duty and on duty police officers, Boy Scouts and members of the public, including the principal of Judy’s school — scoured a 38-square kilometre area of Toronto from Cherry Beach north to Leaside, and Broadview Ave. west to Yonge St. They found no trace of the young Cabbagetown resident. A month later, on April 9, 27 kilometres away, two boys looking for a fishing spot along the banks of the Rouge River in Unionville (now Markham) found a little girl’s body. Star police reporter Gwyn “Jocko’’ Thomas quoted the detectives’ theory that Judy had been strangled in her abductor’s car and her body “tossed over a culvert bridge’’ into the river, where it “floated a considerable distance downstream’’ before lodging on a creek bed. “She was dead before she was thrown in the water,” Chief Coroner Smirle Lawson said after an autopsy. Judy had been strangled with her own white woollen scarf. “The scarf cut cruelly into her flesh,” Lawson said. There were no other marks on her body. Was the little girls murder connected to the murders of other little girls around that time? Was there a serial killer operating in Toronto in the 1950’s? Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Smiths Falls Recent unexplained disappearances have left the eastern Ontario town of Smiths Falls, featuring a population of about 9,300, with more questions than answers. The mystery began in the fall of 2022 when Lawrence Bertrim, who was 42 at the time, disappeared. His acquaintance Robbie Thomson, 34, was reported missing a little over a year later — around mid-October. And earlier this month, the body of 34-year-old Steve Tate — believed to be an acquaintance of Bertrim and Thomson — was discovered in a ditch along Highway 15, just north of town. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have not linked the three cases. The force has said only that its investigations are ongoing. People who knew the three men said all three knew each other, and that each had a history of drug use. Police also pointed out the three men shared similar interests. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Philip Rimington Shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 10th, 1983, 42-year-old Philip Rimmington, Toronto’s deputy planning commissioner, was shot dead with a .22 handgun in the parking garage of the apartment building where he lived at 231 Balliol St., near Mt. Pleasant Rd. A nearby resident reported seeing a grey-haired man in his mid-50s fleeing the garage through a staircase at the northeast corner of the building shortly after the shooting. There were also reports that police had been called in weeks prior to the crime to investigate a stranger lurking around the parking area. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Specials 2 plus January 28 Trailer S2-EP4 Wendy Tedford & Donna Stearne (Trailer) Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations and I’m here to tell you about our next episode of Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast, coming this Sunday, January 28th. On Friday, April 27, 1973, at about 7:30 a.m., 18 year old Tony Iscaro, a student at Downsview Collegiate, was on his way to a basketball game at his school, and taking a short cut through a vacant lot in Toronto. The shells recovered indicated a .38 calibre weapon had been used. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast Upcoming Episode! Leah Sousa On Sept. 1, 1990 —Leah Sousa, 13, died from severe head injuries after being raped and beaten in her Cumberland Beach home, north of Orillia. Sousa's diminutive 80-pound mother, Lora, 36, suffered skull fractures and was left for dead, but survived the attack. The Sousas were asleep in their Beachview Avenue home when when intruders broke through the back door. The youngster was bludgeoned to death, her battered body then dragged into the backyard. Investigators have described the bloody scene as "gruesome" and the attack as "extremely vicious." A nine-month-old baby boy, Michael, was found unharmed in his crib. Hundreds of statements were gathered, but no murder weapon was found, no fingerprints were left at the scene and no charges have been laid. The only physical evidence was a size 9 1/2 or 10 Nike shoe print on the kitchen floor. Authorities suspect the attacker is a male who lived in the area and knew the Sousas were unprotected inside the home. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Cindy Halliday Cindy Halliday, 17, from Waverley - UNSOLVED MURDER-1992 • June 16, 1992 —A skull belonging to Cindy Halliday, 17, is found by a man walking his dog in a wooded area off Horseshoe Valley Road, north of Barrie. Dental records confirm it belongs to the Waverley teen, who was reported missing April 21, the day after she had hitch-hiked to Barrie. Insect experts said Halliday, who had been dismembered, may have lived up to a month after her disappearance. Clothing indicated she had been stabbed. There were also suggestions by investigators that her body may have been moved before it was discovered, but her remains had also been scattered by wild animals. Halliday — who often hitch-hiked to Midland, Elmvale and Barrie — was seen at Macmillan House, a halfway house on Barrie's Toronto Street, where she visited a friend. She was last seen alive that evening in Midhurst, hitch-hiking home to Waverley, and may have gotten into a light-coloured car, possibly a Chrysler LeBaron or Dodge Diplomat, although that has never been confirmed. Her remains were found a short distance away. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Jake Just Jake Just 18, from Midland - UNSOLVED DISAPPEARANCE-1998 • Oct. 30, 1998 — Jake Just, 18, attended a party at a residence in the north end of Midland. He was last seen walking home from the party with a friend, but decided to take a short cut through a wooded area. He was never seen again, even though an extensive and thorough search of that wooded area where he was last seen entering was conducted by police and volunteers. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Upcoming Episode! Sonia Varaschin 42, from Orangeville - UNSOLVED MURDER 2010 • August 30, 2010 – After Sonia Varaschin, a nurse, failed to show up for work, police were called to investigate. A few days later, OPP were contacted by a concerned Caledon citizen after finding human remains. They were later confirmed to be Varaschin's. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP2 Simone Sandler

Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP2 Simone Sandler On Saturday, July 23rd, 1994, 21-year-old university drama student Simone Sandler was canvassing the corner of Yonge St. and Gerrard Ave. in Toronto as part of her summer job recruiting passersby for positions as film extras, when she vanished. Her decomposing body, naked from the waist down, was found a week later floating in the Keating Channel, where the Don River meets Lake Ontario. She had been strangled. At the time, police received numerous tips from people who recall seeing and interacting with her that summer, but to this date, her killer still remains unidentified and at large. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast: Our Parole System is a joke

Palma granted full parole Tell us again how there’s no need for consecutive life sentences; of how a serial killer will never see the light of day. Actually, don’t bother. It’s just happened – with triple killer Marcello Palma just being granted full parole. Now 58, Palma been given a new lease on life just 27 years after he went hunting for people he dismissed as “scum” on a rain-soaked Victoria Day in 1996, shooting three Toronto workers in the head with a .357 Magnum in the space of an hour. “The board is granting full parole today,” chief board member Maureen Gauci told the nervous Palma following a 90-minute hearing Thursday. “Without downplaying the seriousness of your offending, we’ve spent a lot of time today discussing the positive progress you’ve made, progress that started while you were incarcerated and has continued through a gradual release into the community,” Gauci said. “You demonstrated that your risks are manageable.” Without downplaying the seriousness of your offending? Our justice system is a joke. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S1-EP12 Lizzie Tomlinson

On Saturday May 24th, 1980, polite, shy 6-year-old Lizzie Tomlinson was playing with friends in a parkette known by neighbourhood kids as “Stinky’s Park” on the southeast corner of Shuter and Sumach Sts in the east of Toronto’s downtown region. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a man lured her away from the park. An intensive search was immediately launched, but it wasn’t until Monday morning that Lizzie’s defiled body was found in a forlorn industrial area, in some bushes near railway tracks at Bayview Ave. (West Don Roadway) and Front St., roughly a kilometre from where she was taken. It is believed she and her killer walked the entire distance together. She had been beaten and strangled, and was partially covered by weeds and two long boards. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S1-EP 11 Benita Tarantino, Susan Siegel, Donna Oglive, Lori Pinkus, Lyle Ford

Over the years in Toronto there are many unsolved murders of trade workers. These are the stories of five, so they shall not be forgotten. All had been moved from where they were last seen and strangled. These date from the mid-1980’s to the late 1990’s. Could they all be connected to one man? 17-year-old Bonnie Tarantino, a prostitute since the age of 13, left her Ulster St. home to visit friends on September 27th, 1985 - one day after getting engaged to her boyfriend - and never returned. The unclothed body of 20 year old prostitute Susan Siegel was discovered at 7:30 in the morning December 17, 1984 alongside railroad tracks near the Ontario Public Stockyards in an industrial area of west Toronto. Donna Oglive was a resident of British Columbia. She has been in the Toronto area for the past five weeks. Donna had been known to travel between Vancouver and Toronto. She had been working as a prostitute in the Gerrard Street East and Church Street area of Toronto. . She was found murdered on March 8, 1998. The body of Lori Pinkus, was found outside Brockton High School at 90 Croatia Street in downtown Toronto on September 8, 1991. The young woman, a high school dropout who worked as a prostitute and was addicted to drugs, had been strangled and left partially clad behind the school. On September 9, 1990, a couple walking their dog found the body of Lyle Ford around 7:30 a.m. in Crombie Park at the Esplanade and Sherbourne St. Her clothes were dishevelled and the pants she was wearing were pulled down. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S1-EP10 Tracy Kundinger

It was on Aug. 20, 1975 at around 11 p.m. 18 year-old Tracy Kundinger was walking to her family home on Monsanto Court, in Thornhill, just north of Toronto, near John and Leslie streets when her killer approached. Tracy had worked until 10 p.m. as a lifeguard at the Ottawa Indoor Pool located at 650 Parliament Street, Toronto. She decided to take a route that she didn’t usually take, cutting through an open space between the area’s new developments in the area of German Mills Public School at 61 Simonston Blvd. in Thornhill, near Don Mills Rd. just north of Steeles Avenue. Tracy would end up being found murdered by strangulation with a piece of twine, possibly picked up from the immediate area due to the many tree plantings that were going on at the development site. At 9:04 a.m. on the morning of Monday May 12, 1997 a 911 call was received about a body being found in a laneway at 393 Front St. East in downtown Toronto. Upon examination it was confirmed the body was that of 21-year-old Lisa Anstey and she had been strangled. She had been working the streets since she was 11-years-old, the youngest many trade workers had seen. At the time police in and around the Greater Toronto Area had been searching for the killers of at least nine other women with links to prostitution. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S1-EP6 Melinda Sheppit and Sophie Fillion

The headline 11 years ago in 2012 said it all, “Ottawa police warn of pattern in prostitute murders.” Was a serial killer targeting prostitutes? Police Chief Vern White of Ottawa Police, in January 2012, told local workers that a serial killer may have been operating there since at least 1990. At the time there were six unsolved murders of trade workers in Ottawa since 1990. Since then, some have been solved. I believe two may very well be connected. Pregnant 19-year-old Valerie Karen Stevens vanished in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 9th, 1989 after leaving her 17-month-old daughter in the care of a teenage couple. Days later, the police were alerted of her disappearance by the teenage babysitters, who had been taking care of her daughter for four days straight. Stevens’s skeletal remains were found over 3 years later on October 22nd, 1992 in a wooded area near Burford, Ontario, 100 km southwest of Toronto. An autopsy failed to find the cause of death, but all signs led police to suspect murder. Was she the victim of a serial killer or something far more personal? Stay tuned and find out!
