Eleven years on, missing man's sister still pushing for answers Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP21 on the disappearance of Jon Riley 11 years ago, on April 26, 2013, Jon Riley, 46, left a note for his mother at their Meaford home, three hours north of London, saying he was heading to Toronto for a couple of days. He hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Jon worked with computers but would often travel to the city and pick up temporary painting and landscaping jobs. Police said there is no evidence Jon ever left Meaford. They further said Jon enjoyed hiking in the area of the Bruce Trail and typically would bring along a backpack. Police say there is no indication or reason to suspect foul play in the disappearance. Some reports tried to tie in Jon’s disappearance to convicted serial killer, Bruce McArthur, but it appears that another disturbing case, that of a teacher arrested over sexual assault charges, may have been completely ignored. He Went to a Bar 22 Years Ago and Was Never Seen Again Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP20 on the disappearance of David McDermott David MacDermott, 30, was last seen at his residence on Mill Street, Kitchener in the late evening of Saturday November 9, 2002. David MacDermott was to play in an organized ball hockey game the following Sunday morning but never showed up. Mr. MacDermott is described as 6'1", 186 lbs., with brown hair, and brown eyes and a tattoo of a small ladybug between his shoulder blades. He is known to have frequented bars in Kitchener and Waterloo. Waterloo Regional Police are looking into possible links with convicted serial killer Bruce McArthur. Local investigators are quick to say they have not established a known link, but they need to rule out any potential connection to McArthur, the 66-year-old landscaper convicted of killing a number of men in the Toronto area. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP19 on the disappearance of Amber Potts-Jaffary In November 1988, Amber Potts-Jaffary of Etobicoke, at the west end of Toronto, was just sixteen-years-old. And on November 25 of that year, she made a decision that many teens sometimes do: Amber opted to stay out all night to party with a group of friends. The evening went smoothly, and she stayed safely in a motel room that evening. Then, the following morning of November 26, Amber’s mother, Christine Jaffary, and her stepfather, Don Pressey, got tipped off about her whereabouts by one of their daughter’s friends. Don and Christine traveled to the motel where Amber had stayed– located in south Etobicoke– intending to have a difficult discussion with their daughter. Don Pressey’s last glimpse of his stepdaughter was of her disappearing figure as she climbed into the car of a stranger she’d flagged down on Lake Shore Boulevard West in south Etobicoke. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast coming S2-EP15 on the murder of Randy Rankin Was Randy Rankin the victim of a serial killer or was it a targeted hit? Randy Rankin was sitting at his computer desk in the basement of his home in the village of Morewood, southeast of Ottawa, in the early morning hours of Feb. 12, 2007, when someone snuck up to the window and fired a gun through the glass, hitting the 47-year-old in the back of the head. His wife and daughter, who were upstairs at the time, ran to the basement to find him dead. Randy Rankin was a well-known children's entertainer who went by the names of "Lunchbox Louie" and "Koo Koo the Clown." He was also passionate about horse racing, and regularly bought and trained horses. Randy Rankin was one of four defendants named in a $6.25-million lawsuit launched by the Ontario Harness Horse Association over comments on a public discussion board. It was later settled. But according to Gary Rankin, his brother had vowed to publicize more information in the days before his death. On Tuesday, May 15, 1973, with her 27th birthday in two weeks, she met a girlfriend for coffee. She was attractive and popular among staff and students. It felt safe on campus. One female student often slept overnight in her graduate office. Adele was at her desk on the fifth floor working on her thesis until about 11 p.m. Adele picked up her purse and umbrella. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP11 Nicole Morin Nicole Morin totally vanished nearly 40 years ago aged eight while walking to an elevator in her Toronto apartment block to meet a friend who was waiting for her in the downstairs lobby. She never arrived. Her unsolved disappearance marked a turning point for similar police investigations as it took a week before homicide were alerted. How much crucial forensic and witness evidence was lost in that time? On July 30th, 1985, Nicole had left her mothers penthouse apartment at 10:30am and went to the lobby of the 20 storey apartment building to pick up the mail; they lived on the top floor. She then returned to the apartment and got ready to go swimming with a playmate. Before leaving the apartment, Nicole had spoken to a friend through the building’s intercom and promised to be right down. The playmate waited about 15 minutes before buzzing the apartment again to find out why Nicole hadn’t arrived. The two girls had arranged to meet in the lobby and go to a supervised swimming pool at the rear of the building. About 11:00am had Nicole said goodbye to her mother and left the apartment. Police arrest man over string of brutal 1990s child assaults in Brampton, Oakville and Kitchener In the mid-1990s, police used DNA to link a trio of assaults in Kitchener, Brampton and Oakville parks to the same suspect — dubbed the “Woodland Rapist” in media coverage of the attacks and subsequent manhunt. Police have arrested and charged a man they believe is responsible for brutally attacking three children and who has eluded capture for more than 30 years, the Star has learned. In the mid-1990s, police used DNA to link a trio of assaults in Kitchener, Brampton and Oakville parks to the same suspect — a man who was dubbed the “Woodland Rapist” in media coverage of the attacks and subsequent manhunt. The arrest earlier this month follows decades of subsequent searching, including nightly neighbourhood canvases, a special police task force and re-examination years later by a cold case unit — all failing to net an arrest. It also comes as advances in technology have seen a number of prominent GTA cold cases solved through the use of new DNA technologies. Richard Neil, 64, was arrested on March 3 by Peel Police, according to public court records. He remains in custody ahead of a bail hearing. The police services involved in the cases did not immediately respond to requests for comment or confirm the tactics used to make this month’s arrest, but a source with knowledge of the investigation confirmed a public statement was being prepared regarding Neil’s arrest and the Project Woodlands police investigation. None of the allegations against Neil have been proven in court. Toronto criminal defence lawyer Kevin Gray, with Leo Adler Law, said they were contacted this week and are working to be retained to represent Neil. “He has no knowledge of these crimes and he’s innocent,” he said Neil told them. Police have long believed one man was responsible for three separate incidents between 1992 and 1995 in heavily wooded park areas of Kitchener, Brampton and Oakville. DNA evidence, police said then, linked the three assaults but turned up no matches in police databases investigators can use to try to match DNA with previous cases. That searching, however, has long been limited to arrested individuals who have been made to submit a sample to national databanks. In recent years, advancements in genetic genealogy have allowed investigators to compare samples obtained as evidence against DNA voluntarily submitted to databanks via popular websites like 23andMe to make other connections. The dates of the charges against Neil line up with the assaults detailed previously by police. in 1995, investigators made the rare move of releasing confidential, graphic details of the alleged crimes in order to help find the person responsible. In the first case, the Star reported police said a young boy was playing with friends in Kitchener’s Idlewood Park on Aug. 21, 1992, when a man asked if the kids wanted to look at some stolen bicycles. According to court documents on his recent arrest, Neil is alleged to have threatened a boy on that day with a knife and then sexually assaulted him. On Sept. 29, 1994, another boy was assaulted in Norton Place Park in Brampton. Almost a year later, on Aug. 31, 1995, a teen girl was forced into the wooded area of Wildwood Park in Oakville, allegedly at gunpoint. The court records show Neil was charged with using an imitation firearm in an assault on one victim. Police allegations filed in court against Neil also include one count of making child pornography, described as a “graphic computer file.” The unsolved cases left residents with the fear a serial rapist was living amongst them. In November 1995, dozens of auxiliary officers canvassed local neighbourhoods nightly looking for clues. Four years later, police reported they had received over 1,300 tips and interviewed some 1,000 subjects, hundreds of whom voluntarily provided DNA samples. Still, they found no promising leads. Investigators also used a Texas-based company to check via Russian satellite whether the licence plate of a suspected car belonging to the attacker — a reddish-brown Chevy Blazer or Ford Bronco, the Star reported at the time — could be seen from space. A multi-jurisdictional task force was launched to help catch the suspect, but was disbanded in 1996. In 2009, a new unit of Peel Police took on the cold case, speculating the suspect may have died, left the country or simply stopped. The DNA attached to the case was never matched any other unsolved sexual assaults in the nationwide databank. Her body was discovered at a construction site for one of the numerous housing developments springing up around the booming city — near McCowan and Ellesmere Rds. The next day, Thera’s neighbour Ken Rusnell called to see how she was doing. After getting no answer, Rusnell entered the home and found Thera dead on the floor. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP7 Geraldine Pickford On Sunday, September 19th, 1965, 40-year-old Geraldine Pickford, an employee of St. Andrews College at 15800 Yonge St. in Aurora, 40 km north of Toronto, was found murdered in Tannery Creek, which runs through the college grounds. She was last seen alive at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. Concerned staff members and students conducted a search of the premises the following day, which is when Pickford’s body was found. She was lying face up in the water and was fully clothed except for her panties. She had been beaten and strangled, but there was no evidence of a sexual assault. Her killer had forcibly dragged her from the school’s driveway down a hill to the creek. The victim’s purse was found late Sunday night on the driveway near Yonge St. The spot where her purse was deposited was where police believed she was first accosted. Julia Wolanski Sunday, August 12th, 1962: The defiled body of 16-year-old Julian (Julie) Wolanski is found in a ditch off Indian Line (at the time relatively remote farm country north of Toronto Airport near what is now the Claireville Reservoir), sparking one of the largest unsuccessful manhunts in the city’s history. The victim, a shy girl who lived on Wallace Ave. in the city’s west end and went to Givins St. public school, had been missing since Tuesday the 7th. She had been stripped of almost all her clothes, brutally raped, beaten about the face and head, shot through the heart with a .32 calibre bullet, and dumped out of a moving car into the ditch where she lay. She must have been held captive for several days, because an autopsy and other evidence determined she had been dead not much longer than 48 hours before she was found. Cameron March At 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7th, 1975, 4-year-old Cameron March, described as a happy, very smart boy, vanished while playing in front of or near his home at 5349 Blind Line Rd. near Colling Rd., in Lowville, Ont., a village 40 km southwest of Toronto. In the days following, hundreds of searchers, including police, search dogs, and volunteers, scoured the nearby countryside for any trace of the boy. Firefighters drained area ponds, without result. Tips investigated by police included the sighting of a white and green car parked near the boy’s home around the time he disappeared, a red sedan spied in the area, and the sighting of a bearded man walking up and down Blind Line Rd. at about the same time. Veronica Kaye Veronica Kaye was last seen on Nov. 7, 1980 leaving a friend's workplace on Hensall Circle in Mississauga after borrowing a pair of jeans. The 18-year-old Etobicoke woman was supposed to go to Square One, and later a party, but she never arrived. It wasn't until 11 months later, on Oct. 9, 1981, that her body was found, still wearing the same clothes, by two friends walking their dogs on a path near Duffy's Lane, south of Castleberg Sideroad, northwest of Bolton. In November, 2009 Caledon OPP offered a reward for information leading to an arrest in the case and released new information: a distinctive button found beneath Kaye's skeletal remains. The case was never closed, said OPP, but the reward and new information was released in hope of generating tips that might further the cold case. Ontario Cold Cases - The Podcast S2-EP6 Cassandra Do & Lien Pham On August 25, 2003, Cassandro Do, 32, was found in her bathtub sexually assaulted and murdered in her 60 Glouster Street apartment in Toronto by police who were responding to a call. An autopsy showed she was manually strangled. She had been scheduled to meet a client that day. Do, a preoperative transsexual who had once worked as a nurse, was saving money for her operation, and working as a prostitute in the Village. Do, who also went by the name Tula, solicited clients on her website and ads in the back of weekly Toronto newspapers. Do’s death occurred within days of two other women’s deaths, prompting concerns from citizens and the media. The body of Lien Pham, a prostitute, who's working names were May-ling and/or Kim, was found at her apartment at 24 Mabelle Ave., Apt. #1817, in Toronto, on Monday, October 13, 2003. Mayling was strangled. There are similiarities to the death of Cassandra Do. Both were Asian, both were strangled, both were incalls and both were found dead in their bathtubs. Also neither women's apartment building had video surveillance in the lobbies. After a description of Cassandra Do's killer had been reported on CFTO TV on October 6, 2003, four pro's contacted the station to report that they too, had been beaten and sexually attacked by a guy meeting the description of the suspect from the broadcast.
