「いや、人はいいんだけどさ。年齢がねー。定年退職した人だったんだけど、腰が悪くて前の店を辞めたばっかりだっていうんだよ。それで、うちの店でも、腰が痛い時はできれば休みたいっていうからさ。前もってわかってるならともなく、直前に休めれるくらいなら、俺が夜勤入ったほうがいいやって思ってさ。」
「そうですか」
肉体労働は、身体を懐かしまうと「使えなく」なってしまう。いくら真面目でも、頑張っていても、身体が年を取ったら、私もこのコンビニではつっかえない部品になるのかもしれない。
「は、古倉さん、今度の日曜日、午後だけ入ることってできる？菅原さんがライブで出れなくてさー」
「はい、入れます」
「ほんと？いや、助かるわ」
今はまだ、私は「使える」道具だ。安緒と不安、両方を内臓に抱えながら、「いえ、稼ぎたいんでむしろうれしいですよっ！」と、私は菅原さんの喋り方で微笑みかけた。

"Well, he's a good person, but you see, it's his age. He's a retiree, but he just left his previous job because of his bad back. So, even in our store, when his back hurts, he wants to take a day off if possible. Rather than knowing in advance, if it's about taking a day off at the last minute, I thought it's better for me to work the night shift."
「そうですか」
"Is that so?"
肉体労働は、身体を懐かしまうと「使えなく」なってしまう。いくら真面目でも、頑張っていても、身体が年を取ったら、私もこのコンビニではつっかえない部品になるのかもしれない。
Physical labor, when you cherish your body, might become 'unusable.' No matter how diligent and hardworking you are, if your body ages, I might also become a part that can't function properly in this convenience store.
「は、古倉さん、今度の月曜日、午後だけ入ることってできる？菅原さんがライブで出れなくてさー」
"Hey, Furukura-san, could you work just for the afternoon next Monday? Kugahara-san can't make it due to a live performance."
「はい、入れます」
"Yes, I can do it."
「ほんと？いや、助かるわ」
"Really? Well, that's a relief."
今はまだ、私は「使える」道具だ。安堵と不安、両方を内臓に抱えながら、「いえ、稼ぎたいんでむしろうれしいですよっ！」と、私は菅原さんの喋り方で微笑みかけた。
For now, I'm still a "usable" tool. With both relief and anxiety in my heart, I smiled and said, "No, I actually want to earn, so I'm happy!" in Sugahara-san's manner of speaking.
