マミコが戸惑った声を出す。
「うん。ええとね、私は身体が。。。」
「そうそう、恵子は身体が弱いいんだよね。だからバイトで働いてるんだよね」
私は庇うようにミホが言う。私は代わりに言い訳をしてくれたみほに感謝していると、ユカリの旦那さんが、
「え、でも立ち仕事でしょ？身体弱いのに？」と怪訝な声を出した。
彼とは初めて会うのに、そんなに身を乗り出して眉間に皺を寄せるほど、私の存在が疑問のだろうか？
「ええと、他の仕事は経験がないのにで、体力的にも精神的にも、コンビニは楽なんです」
私の説明に、ユカリの旦那さんは、まるで妖怪でも見るような顔で私をみた。
「え、ずっと。。。？いや、就職が難しくても、結婚くらいした方がいいよ。今はさ、ほら、ネット結婚とかいろいろあるでしょ？」
私はユカリの旦那さんが強く言葉を発した拍子に、唾液がバーベキューの肉の上に飛んで行ったのを眺めていた。食べ物の前にみをのり出して喋るのはやめたほう（８２）がいいのではないかな、と思っていると、ミホの旦那さんも大きく頷いた。

Mamiko let out a bewildered voice.
「うん。ええとね、私は身体が。。。」
"Yeah. Well, you see, my health..."
「そうそう、恵子は身体が弱いいんだよね。だからバイトで働いてるんだよね」
"Yeah, that's right. Keiko has weak health. That's why she's working part-time."
私は庇うようにミホが言う。私は代わりに言い訳をしてくれたみほに感謝していると、ユカリの旦那さんが、
Miho spoke up to defend me. I felt grateful to Miho for providing an excuse for me. Then, Yukari's husband said,
「え、でも立ち仕事でしょ？身体弱いのに？」と怪訝な声を出した。
"But, isn't it a job where you have to stand? Even though you have weak health?"
彼とは初めて会うのに、そんなに身を乗り出して眉間に皺を寄せるほど、私の存在が疑問のだろうか？
Even though it was the first time I had met him, was my existence causing him such doubt that he leaned forward and furrowed his brows like that?
「ええと、他の仕事は経験がないのにで、体力的にも精神的にも、コンビニは楽なんです」
"Um, well, I don't have experience in other jobs, and physically and mentally, working at a convenience store is easy."
私の説明に、ユカリの旦那さんは、まるで妖怪でも見るような顔で私をみた。
In response to my explanation, Yukari's husband looked at me with a face as if he were seeing a monster.
「え、ずっと。。。？いや、就職が難しくても、結婚くらいした方がいいよ。今はさ、ほら、ネット結婚とかいろいろあるでしょ？」
"You mean, you've been doing that for a long time...? Well, even if it's difficult to find a job, it's better to get married, you know? Nowadays, there are various things like online marriages, right?"
私はユカリの旦那さんが強く言葉を発した拍子に、唾液がバーベキューの肉の上に飛んで行ったのを眺めていた。食べ物の前にみをのり出して喋るのはやめたほう（８２）がいいのではないかな、と思っていると、ミホの旦那さんも大きく頷いた。
As Yukari's husband spoke firmly, I watched as saliva accidentally flew onto the barbecue meat. I thought it might be better not to lean forward and talk in front of food. Miho's husband also nodded vigorously.
