「本当に、ここは変わらないわねえ」
今、ここから一人消えたんですよ。そう伝えることはせず、「ありがとうございます」と言って、私は商品をスキャン始めた。
目の前の客の姿が、１８年前、最初に私がレジを打った年配の女性の姿と重なる。
あの年配の女性も、つえをつきながら毎日通ってくださっていたが、いつの間にか来なくなった。身体がもっと悪くなってしまったのか、引っ越してしまったのか、知る手段は私たちにはない。
はれど、私は誰かにあの日と同じ光景を操り返している。あれから６６０７回私たちは同じ朝を迎えている。
ビニール袋の中に、そっと卵を入れる。昨日売ったのと同じ、けれど違う卵を入れる。「お客様」は、昨日入れたのと同じビニールに同じ箸を入れて同じ小銭を受け取って、同じ朝を微笑んでいる。
バーベキューをやろうとみほから連絡が入れ、次の月曜の朝からみほの家に集まることになった。午前中から買い出しを手伝う約束をしたことろで、携帯が鳴った。見ると、実家からの電話だった。
「本当に、ここは変わらないわねえ」
"Really, this place hasn't changed."
今、ここから一人消えたんですよ。そう伝えることはせず、「ありがとうございます」と言って、私は商品をスキャン始めた。
Right now, one person has disappeared from here. Without conveying that, I said, "Thank you," and began scanning the products.
目の前の客の姿が、１８年前、最初に私がレジを打った年配の女性の姿と重なる。
The figure of the customer in front of me overlapped with that of an elderly woman I first rang up 18 years ago.
あの年配の女性も、つえをつきながら毎日通ってくださっていたが、いつの間にか来なくなった。身体がもっと悪くなってしまったのか、引っ越してしまったのか、知る手段は私たちにはない。
That elderly woman also used to come here every day with a cane, but she stopped coming at some point. We have no way of knowing whether her health deteriorated further, she moved away, or something else happened.
はれど、私は誰かにあの日と同じ光景を操り返している。あれから６６０７回私たちは同じ朝を迎えている。
Nevertheless, I find myself recreating the same scene from that day for someone else. Since then, we have welcomed the same morning 6,607 times.

Gently placing eggs into a plastic bag, the same but different from the ones I sold yesterday. The "customer" places the same chopsticks into the same plastic bag as yesterday, takes the same coins, and smiles at the same morning.

I received a call from Miho, who suggested having a barbecue, and we decided to gather at her house starting next Monday morning. Just when we had agreed to help with the shopping in the morning, my phone rang. Looking at it, it was a call from my parents' house.
