菅原さんの言葉に、泉さんが吹き出した。
「そうそう、あれ、ほんと気持ち悪い。何なんだろうねー、意味不明。あんなの採用しないでくださいよ、店長」
「いや、人手不足だったからさー」
「あの、年齢でコンビニをクビになるって、終わってますよね。あのままのたれ死んでくれればいいのに！」
皆が笑い声をあげ、私も「そうですね！」と頷きながら、私が異物になったときはこうして排除されるんだな、と思った。
「また新し人探さないとなー。募集かけるか」
こうして、また一つ、店の細胞が入れ替わっていく。
いつもより活気のある朝礼が終わり、レジに行こうとすると、常連のつえをついた女性客が下の段にある商品に手を伸ばして、転びそうになりながら腰をかがめていた。
「お客様、お取りしますよ。こちらでよろしいですか？」
素早くいちごジャムをとってお聞きすると、「ありがとう」と女性が微笑んだ。レジまでかごをお持ちすると、女性は財布を取り出しながら、今日も眩いた。

In response to Sugiwara-san's words, Izumi-san burst into laughter.
「そうそう、あれ、ほんと気持ち悪い。何なんだろうねー、意味不明。あんなの採用しないでくださいよ、店長」
"Yeah, yeah, that guy was really creepy. I wonder what was up with him. Completely incomprehensible. Please don't hire anyone like him, Manager."
「いや、人手不足だったからさー」
"Well, you know, we were short-staffed."
「あの、年齢でコンビニをクビになるって、終わってますよね。あのままのたれ死んでくれればいいのに！」
"I mean, getting fired from a convenience store at his age, he's finished, right? It would be better if he just dropped dead as he is!"
皆が笑い声をあげ、私も「そうですね！」と頷きながら、私が異物になったときはこうして排除されるんだな、と思った。
Everyone burst into laughter, and I nodded, thinking that this was how I would be excluded when I became an outsider.
「また新し人探さないとなー。募集かけるか」
"We'll have to look for a new person again. Should we put up a job posting?"
こうして、また一つ、店の細胞が入れ替わっていく。
And so, once again, the cells of the store were replaced.

After a livelier than usual morning meeting, as I was about to head to the cash register, a regular customer with a cane was reaching for a product on the lower shelf, nearly stumbling as she bent over.
「お客様、お取りしますよ。こちらでよろしいですか？」
"I'll get it for you, ma'am. Is this the one you want?"
素早くいちごジャムをとってお聞きすると、「ありがとう」と女性が微笑んだ。レジまでかごをお持ちすると、女性は財布を取り出しながら、今日も眩いた。
Swiftly taking the strawberry jam and asking, she smiled and said, "Thank you." When we reached the cash register, she took out her wallet, her eyes sparkling as always.
