「うん、元気に働いてるよ。あ、そうだ、この前、ミホたちに会いに地元に行ったよ」
「えーまた？いいなあ、甥っ子の顔も持った見にくてよ」
「妹が笑うが、私はミホの子供も甥っ子も、同じに見えるので、わざわざこっちの方も見に来なくてはいけないという理屈がよくわからない。でも、こっちの赤ん坊の方が、大事にしなくてはいけない赤ん坊なのだろう。私にとっては野良猫のようなもので、少しの違いはあっても、「赤ん坊」と言う種類の同じ動物にしか見えたいのだった。
「あ、そうだ、麻美、何かもっといい言い訳ってない？最近、身体が弱いっていうだけじゃ、怪訝な顔されるようになっちゃった」
「。。。うーん、考えてみるね。お姉ちゃんはリハビリ中なんだから、身体が弱いていうのも、全部言い訳や嘘っていうわけじゃないんだよ。堂々としてていいんだよ」
「でも、恋な人って思われると、愛じゃないって自分のことを思っている人から、根掘り葉掘り聞かれるでしょう？ その面倒を回避するには、言い訳があると便利だよ。」
「うん、元気に働いてるよ。あ、そうだ、この前、ミホたちに会いに地元に行ったよ」 "Yeah, I'm working energetically. Oh, by the way, I went back to my hometown to see Miho and the others the other day."
「えーまた？いいなあ、甥っ子の顔も持った見にくてよ」 "Huh? Again? That's nice. I want to see my nephew's face too."
「妹が笑うが、私はミホの子供も甥っ子も、同じに見えるので、わざわざこっちの方も見に来なくてはいけないという理屈がよくわからない。でも、こっちの赤ん坊の方が、大事にしなくてはいけない赤ん坊なのだろう。私にとっては野良猫のようなもので、少しの違いはあっても、「赤ん坊」と言う種類の同じ動物にしか見えたいのだった。 "My sister laughs, but I can't quite understand the logic that I should bother coming here just because Miho's child and my nephew look the same to me. But I suppose this baby here is the one I should really cherish. To me, it's like a stray cat; even with some differences, I want to see it as the same type of creature called a 'baby.'"
「あ、そうだ、麻美、何かもっといい言い訳ってない？最近、身体が弱いっていうだけじゃ、怪訝な顔されるようになっちゃった」 "Oh, right, Asami, isn't there some better excuse? Lately, just saying you have a weak body has started to make people look at you suspiciously."
「。。。うーん、考えてみるね。お姉ちゃんはリハビリ中なんだから、身体が弱いっていうのも、全部言い訳や嘘っていうわけじゃないんだよ。堂々としてていいんだよ」 "Hmm, I'll think about it. Sis, you're in the middle of rehabilitation, so saying you have a weak body isn't just an excuse or a lie. It's okay to be straightforward."
「でも、恋な人って思われると、愛じゃないって自分のことを思っている人から、根掘り葉掘り聞かれるでしょう？ その面倒を回避するには、言い訳があると便利だよ。」 "But when people think you have a lover, they'll start prying and asking questions about why you're not feeling well, right? To avoid that trouble, having an excuse is convenient."
