店がオープンして４年目、近くにあるライバル店が潰れた時は大変だった。その分の客が殺到して、昼ピークが終わらずに残業をした。弁当の数が足りなくて、店長が本社の人にリサーチ不足だと叱られていた。そんなことが起きないように、私はこの街を、店員として、しっかりと見つめながら歩くことにしている。
今日は特に大きな変化はなかったが、近くに新しいビルができるようなので、完成したらまた客が増えるかもしれない。そんなことをころに刻みながら店まで辿りつき、サンドイッチとお茶を勝手バックルームに入ると、今日も夜勤に入っていた店長が、汗ばんだ身体を丸めて、お客のストアコンピューターに数字を入力しているところだった。
「おはようございます」
「あ、おはよう古倉さん、今日も早いねー！」
店長は３０歳の男性で、常にキビキビとしている。口は悪いが働き者の、この店で、８人めの店長だ。
二人目の店長はサポり癖があり、４人目の店長は真面目で掃除好きで、６人目の店長は癖のある人で嫌われ、夕勤が全員一気には辞めると言うトラブルになった。８人目の店長は比較的アルバイトからも好かれ、自分が体を体を動かして働くタイプな（４６）のでみていて気持ちがいい。
