朝、早く目が覚えてしまった時は、一駅前で降りで店まで歩くことにしている。マンションや飲食店が立ち呑んでいる場所から、店の方へ歩いていくにしたがって、おフェスビルしかななくなっていく。
その、ゆっくりと世界が死んでいくような感覚が、心他いい。初めてこの店に迷い込んだ時と変わらない光景だ。早朝、たまにスーツ姿のサラリーマンが早足で通り過ぎていくだけで、ほとんど生き物が見当とらない。
こんなにオフィスしかないのに、コンビニで働いていると住民風の客も訪ねるので、一体どこに住んでいるのだろうというつも思う。このセミの抜け殻の中を歩いているような世界のどこかで、私の「お客様」が眠っているのだとぼんやり思う。
夜になると、オフェスの光が幾何学的に並ぶ光景に変わる。自分が住んでいる安いアパートが並ぶ光景と違って、光も無機質で、均一な色をしている。
店の周りを歩くのは、コンビニ店員にとって大切な情報収集でも洗う。食店が弁当を始めたら売上に影響するし、新しく工事がはみまればそこで働く客が増える。
