ほんの少しだけより強く、より硬く、中かもぞもぞもぞと声が聞こえ、ドアが小さく開く。男が顔をのぞかせる。年齢は四十歳前後。マリン・ブラーのういシャツに、グレーのフロンのスラックスというかっこうだ。ビジネスマンとりあえずスーツの上着を脱ぎ、ネクタイはずしたという雰囲気が漂っている。いかにも不機嫌そうな赤い目をしている。おそらく寝不足なのだろう。ビジネス・スーツを着た青豆の姿を見て、いくらか意外な顔をした。多分室内の冷蔵庫の補充をするメイドでも予想いたのだろう。
「おくつろぎのところを失礼いたします。ホテルのマネージメントの伊藤とと申しますが、空調設備に問題がな生じまして、点検に参りました。五分ばかりお部屋にお邪魔してようろしいでしょうか」と青豆はにこやかに微笑みながら、できぱとした口調で言った。
男は目を不快そうにすぼめた。「大事な急ぎの仕事をしているところなんだ。一時聞くらいで部屋を出るから、その時まで持ってもらえないかな？今のところこの部屋の空調にはとくに問題もないみたいだし」
「申し訳ございませんが、漏電に関係する緊急の安全確認なので、できれば早急に終えてしまいたいのです。このようにお部屋を一つ一つ回っております。ご努力いただければ、五分もかからずに終わります」
「しょうがないな」と男は言って舌打ちをした。「邪魔されずに仕事をするために、わざわざ部屋を散りたのに」
彼は机の上の書類を指さした。コンピュタからプリントアウトされた細かい図表が積み上げられている。今夜の会議のために必要な資料を準備しているのだろう。計算機があり、メモ用紙（６８）にはたくさんの数字が並べられている。

He looked somewhat surprised at seeing a woman in a business suit, probably expecting a maid to come to replenish the mini-bar.

The man narrowed his eyes unpleasantly. "I'm in the middle of important urgent work. Can't you wait until I leave the room after just a quick check? There doesn't seem to be any problem with the air conditioning in this room at the moment."
「申し訳ございませんが、漏電に関係する緊急の安全確認なので、できれば早急に終えてしまいたいのです。このようにお部屋を一つ一つ回っております。ご努力いただければ、五分もかからずに終わります」
"I apologize, but this is an urgent safety check related to a possible electrical leakage, so I would like to finish it as soon as possible. We are going through each room like this. If you cooperate, it won't take more than five minutes."
「しょうがないな」と男は言って舌打ちをした。「邪魔されずに仕事をするために、わざわざ部屋を散りたのに」
"Well, I guess it can't be helped," the man said with a click of his tongue. "I came out to work without being disturbed, and now this."

He pointed to the documents on the desk. Detailed diagrams printed from the computer are stacked up. He must be preparing the materials needed for tonight's meeting. There is a calculator, and many numbers are written on memo pad (page 68).
