「ヤナーチェック」と青豆は半ば無意識に口にした。言ってしまってから、そんなことは言わなければよ買ったと思った。
「なんですか？」
「ヤナーチェック。この音楽を作曲した人」
「知りませんね」
「チェコの作曲家」と青豆は言った。
「ほう」と運転手は感心したように言った。

But why did I immediately know that the music was Janáček's 'Sinfonietta,' Aomame wondered. And why do I know it was composed in 1926?
彼女はとくにクラシック音楽のファンではない。ヤナーチェックについての個人的な思い入れがあるわけでもない。なのにその音楽の冒頭の一節を聴いた瞬間から、彼女の頭にいろんな知識が反射的に浮かんできたのだ。
She is not particularly a fan of classical music. Nor does she have a personal fondness for Janáček. Yet, the moment she heard the opening passage of the music, various pieces of knowledge reflexively came to her mind.
開いた窓から一群の鳥が部屋に飛び込んでくるみたいに。そしてまたその音楽は青豆に、ねじれに似た微妙な感覚をもたらした。
Like a flock of birds suddenly flying through an open window. And again, the music gave Aomame a subtle sensation, akin to a twist.
痛みや不快さはそこにはない。ただ身体の全ての組成がじわじわと物理的に絞り上げられているような感じがあるだけだ。
There was no pain or discomfort. It was just a feeling as if the entire composition of her body was being physically wrung out slowly.
青豆にはわけがわからなかった。「シンフォニエッタ」という音楽が私にこの不可解な感覚をもたらしているのだろうか。
Aomame was confused. Was it the 'Sinfonietta' that brought about this inexplicable sensation?
「ヤナーチェック」と青豆は半ば無意識に口にした。言ってしまってから、そんなことは言わなければよかったと思った。
"Janáček," Aomame said half unconsciously. After saying it, she thought she shouldn't have.
「なんですか？」
"What?"
「ヤナーチェック。この音楽を作曲した人」
"Janáček. The person who composed this music."
「知りませんね」
"I don't know him."
「チェコの作曲家」と青豆は言った。
"A Czech composer," Aomame said.
「ほう」と運転手は感心したように言った。
"Oh," the driver said, as if impressed.
