小松という男にはどこかはかり知れないないところがあった。何を考えているのか、何を感じているのか、表情や声音から簡単に読みとることができない。そして本人も、そうやって相手を煙に巻くことを少なからず楽しんでいるらしかった。頭の回転は確かに速い。他人の思など関係なく、自分の論理に従ってものを考え、判断を下すタイプだ。また不必要にひけらかくことはしないが、大量の本を読んでおり、多幅にわたって綿密な知識を有していた。知識ばかりではなく、直感的に人を見抜き、作品を見抜く目も持っていた。そこには偏見が多分に含まれていたが、彼に撮っては偏見も真実の重要な要素のひとつだった。
もともと多く話る男ではなく、何につけ説明を加えることを嫌ったが、必要とあれば怜悧に倫理的に自説を述べることができた。そうなろうと思えばことん幸Xになることもできた。相手の一番弱い部分を狙い澄まし、１瞬のうちに短い言葉で刺し貫くことができた。人についても作品についても個人的な好みが強く、許容できる相手よりは許容できない人間や作品の方がはるかに多かった。そして当然のことながら相手の方も、彼に対して好意を抱くよりは、抱かないことの方がはるかに多かった。しかしそれは彼自身の求めるところでもあった。天五のみることろ、彼はむしろ孤立することを好んだ、他人に敬遠されることをーあるいははっきりと嫌われることをー結構楽しんでもいた。精神の鋭利さが心地よい環境から生まれることはない、というのが彼の心情だった。
小松は天五より16歳年上で、45歳になる。文芸誌の編集一筋でやってきて、業界ではやり（４２）手としてそれなりに名を知られているが、その私生活について知る人はいない。
