「もちろん。それだけでは足らない。そこには「特別な何か」がなくてはならない。少なくとも、何かしら俺には読みきれないものが含まれていなくてはならない。俺はね、こと小説に関して言えば、自分に読み切れないものを何より評価するんだ。俺に読み切れるようなものには、とんと興味が持てない。当たり前だよな。極めて単純なことだ」
天五はしばらく黙っていた。それから口を開いた。「ふかえりの書いたものには、小松さんに読み切れないものは含まれていますか？」
「ああ。あるよ、もちろん。この子は何か大事なものを持っている。どんなものだか知らんがちゃんともち合わせている。そいつはよくわかるんだ。君にもわかるし、俺にもわかる。それは風のない午後の焚き火の煙みたいに、誰の目にも明らかに見て取れる。しかしね、天五くん、この子の抱えているものは、この子の手にはおそらく負いれないだろう」
「水に放り込んでも浮かぶ見込みはない」
「そのとおり」と小松は言った。
「だから最終選考には残さない？」
「そこだよ」と小松は言った。そして唇をゆがめ、テープルの上で両手を合わせた「そこで俺としては、言葉を慎重に選ばなくちゃならないことになる」
天五はコーヒーカップを手に取り、中に残っているものを眺めた。そしてカップを元に戻した。小松はまだ何も言わない。天五は口を開いた。「小松さんの言うちょっとした別のアイデアがそこに浮上してくるわけですね？」
小松は出来の良い生徒を前にした教師のように目を細めた。そしてゆっくりと浮くが肯いた。「そう（４１）いうことだ」

"Of course. That alone is not enough. There must be 'something special' there. At least, it must contain something I can't fully comprehend. You know, when it comes to novels, I value above all else things that I can't fully read. I have no interest in things that I can fully understand. It's obvious. It's a very simple matter."

天五はしばらく黙っていた。それから口を開いた。「ふかえりの書いたものには、小松さんに読み切れないものは含まれていますか？」
Tengo was silent for a while. Then he spoke, "Does what Fukaeri wrote contain something that Komatsu can't fully read?"

"Ah. Yes, of course. This kid has something important. I don't know what it is, but she definitely possesses it. It's quite clear. You can see it, and I can too. It's as obvious as the smoke from a fire on a windless afternoon. But, Tengo, what this child is carrying, she probably can't handle it."

"So you're not leaving it in the final selection?"

"That's right," Komatsu said. Then he twisted his lips and clasped his hands together on the table. "That's where I have to be careful in choosing my words."

Tengo picked up the coffee cup and looked at what was left inside. Then he put the cup back down. Komatsu hadn't said anything yet. Tengo spoke, "So, Komatsu, a slightly different idea you mentioned is emerging there, isn't it?"

小松は出来の良い生徒を前にした教師のように目を細めた。そしてゆっくりと浮くが肯いた。「そう（４１）いうことだ」
Komatsu narrowed his eyes like a teacher facing a well-performing student. Then he slowly nodded in agreement. "That's right."
