青豆は革の大振りなショルダーバッグを手に車を降りた。車を降りるときにもまだ、ラジオの拍手は鳴り止まず続いていた。彼女は10メータルばかり前方にある緊急避難用スペースに向けて、高速道路の端を注意深く歩いた。反対行きの車線を大型トラックが通り過ぎるたびに、高いビールのしたで路面がゆらゆらと揺れた。それ揺れというよりほうねりにに近い。荒波の上に浮かんだ航空母艦の甲板を歩いているようだ。

赤いスズキ・アルトに乗った小さな女の子が、助手席の窓から顔を突き出し、ぽかんと口を開けて青豆を眺めていた。それから振り向いて母親に「ねえねえあの女の人、何しているの？どこにいくの？」と尋ねた。「私も外に出て歩きたい。ねえ、お母さん、私も外に出たい。ねえ、お母さん」と大きな声で執拗に要求した。母親ただ黙って首を振った。それから攻めるような視線を青豆にちらりと送った。しかしそれがあたりで発せられた唯一の声であり、目についた唯一の反応だった。他のドライバーたちはただ煙草をふかせ、眉を軽くひそめ、彼女が側壁と車のあいだを迷いのない足取りで歩いていく姿を、眩しいものを見るような目で追っていた。彼らは一時的に判断を保留しているようだった。たとえ車が動いてないにせよ、首都高速道路の路上を人が歩くのは日常的な出来事とは言えない。それを現実の光景として知覚し受け入れるまでにいくらか時間がかかる。歩いているのがミニスカートにハイヒールという格好の若い女性であれば、それはなおされだ。

彼女は10メータルばかり前方にある緊急避難用スペースに向けて、高速道路の端を注意深く歩いた。 - "She walked carefully towards the emergency evacuation space about 10 meters ahead along the edge of the expressway."

反対行きの車線を大型トラックが通り過ぎるたびに、高いビールのしたで路面がゆらゆらと揺れた。 - "Each time a large truck passed by on the opposite lane, the road surface swayed under the high buildings."

それ揺れというよりほうねりにに近い。 - "It was more like a wobble than a shake."

荒波の上に浮かんだ航空母艦の甲板を歩いているようだ。 - "It was like walking on the deck of an aircraft carrier floating on rough seas."

母親ただ黙って首を振った。 - The mother just shook her head in silence.

それから攻めるような視線を青豆にちらりと送った。 - Then she shot a challenging glance at Aomame.

しかしそれがあたりで発せられた唯一の声であり、目についた唯一の反応だった。 - However, that was the only voice that was uttered there, and the only reaction that caught the eye.

他のドライバーたちはただ煙草をふかせ、眉を軽くひそめ、彼女が側壁と車のあいだを迷いのない足取りで歩いていく姿を、眩しいものを見るような目で追っていた。 - The other drivers just smoked their cigarettes, furrowed their brows slightly, and followed her with their eyes as she walked confidently between the side barrier and the cars, as if looking at something dazzling.

彼らは一時的に判断を保留しているようだった。 - They seemed to be temporarily withholding judgment.

たとえ車が動いてないにせよ、首都高速道路の路上を人が歩くのは日常的な出来事とは言えない。 - Even if the cars weren't moving, a person walking on the Metropolitan Expressway is not an everyday occurrence.

それを現実の光景として知覚し受け入れるまでにいくらか時間がかかる。 - It takes some time to perceive and accept it as a scene of reality.

歩いているのがミニスカートにハイヒールという格好の若い女性であれば、それはなおされだ。 - If the person walking is a young woman dressed in a miniskirt and high heels, it's even more of a sight.
