家にいるときは、朝早く起きてだいたい多分近くまで小説を書いた。モンブランの万年筆とブルーのインクと、四百字詰め原稿用紙。それさえあれば天五は満ち足りた気持ちになれた。週に一度、人妻のガールフレンドが彼のアパートの部屋にやってきて、午後を一緒に過ごした。十歳年上の人妻とのセックスは、どこにも生きようがあないぶん気楽であり、その内容は充実していた。夕方に長い散歩をし、日が暮れると音楽と聴きながら一人で本を読んだ。テレビは見ない。NHKの集金人が来ると、申し訳ないがテレビはありませんと丁寧に断った。本当にないんです。中に入って調べてもラッテもかまいません。しかし彼らは部屋には入ってこなかった。NHKの集金人にはいえに上がり込むことが許されていないのだ。
「俺は考えているのはね、もう少しでかいことなんだ」と小松はいった。
「でかいこと？」
「そう。新人賞なんて小さいことは言わず、どうせならもっとでかいのを狙う」
天五は黙っていた。小松の意図するところは不明だが、そこに何かしら不穏なものを感じ取ることはできた。
「芥川賞だよ」と小松はしばらく間を置いてから言った。
「芥川賞」と天五君は相手の言葉を、濡れた砂の上に棒切れで大きく漢字を書くみたいに繰り返した。

夕方に長い散歩をし、日が暮れると音楽と聴きながら一人で本を読んだ。In the evening, he would take a long walk, and as dusk fell, he read a book alone while listening to music.
テレビは見ない。NHKの集金人が来ると、申し訳ないがテレビはありませんと丁寧に断った。本当にないんです。中に入って調べてもラッテもかまいません。しかし彼らは部屋には入ってこなかった。NHKの集金人にはいえに上がり込むことが許されていないのだ。He didn't watch TV. When the NHK fee collector comes, he politely refuses, saying, "Sorry, but I don't have a TV." It's true. Even if they were to come in and check, it wouldn't matter. But they never entered the room. NHK fee collectors aren't allowed to enter homes.
「俺は考えているのはね、もう少しでかいことなんだ」と小松はいった。"What I'm thinking about is something bigger," said Komatsu.
「でかいこと？」"Something big?"
「そう。新人賞なんて小さいことは言わず、どうせならもっとでかいのを狙う」"Yes. Instead of talking about small things like newcomer awards, aim for something much bigger."
天五は黙っていた。小松の意図するところは不明だが、そこに何かしら不穏なものを感じ取ることはできた。Tengo remained silent. He was unclear about Komatsu's intentions, but he could sense something ominous.
「芥川賞だよ」と小松はしばらく間を置いてから言った。"The Akutagawa Prize," Komatsu said after a pause.
「芥川賞」と天五君は相手の言葉を、濡れた砂の上に棒切れで大きく漢字を書くみたいに繰り返した。"The Akutagawa Prize," Tengo repeated, as if writing large kanji characters with a stick on wet sand.
