「芥川賞。それくらい世間知らずの天五くんだって知ってるだろう。新聞にでかでかと出て、テレビのニューズにもなる」
「ねえ小松さん、よくわからないんだけど、今ひょっとして僕らは、不帰の話をしているんですか？」
「そうだよ。様々は不帰と「空気さなぎ」の話をしている。それ以外に話題にのぼった条件はないはずだ」
天五は唇を噛んで、その裏にあるはずの筋を読み取ろうとした。「でも、この作品は新人賞を取るのも無理だって、ずっとそういう話だったじゃないですか？このままじゃんともならないって」
「そうだよ、このままじゃなんともならない。そいつは明白い事実だ」
天五には考える時間が必要だった。「ということはつまり、応募してきた作品に手を入れるってことですか？」
「それ以外に方法はないさ。有望な応募作に編集者がアドバイスして書き直させる例はよくある。珍しいことじゃない。ただし今回は著者自身ではなく、他の誰かが書く直すことになる」
「他の誰か」そういったものの、その答えは質問を口にする前から天五にはわかっていた。ただの念ために尋ねただけだ。
「君が書くき直すんだよ」と小松は言った。
「天五は適当な言葉を探した。しかし適当な言葉は見当たらなかった。彼はため息をつき、言った。「てもね、小松さん、この作品は多少手値視するくらいじゃ間に会いません。頭から尻尾まで根本的に描き直さないことにはまとまりがつかないでしょう」

"The Akutagawa Prize. Even someone as naive as Tengo must know about it. It's prominently featured in newspapers and makes the news on TV."
「ねえ小松さん、よくわからないんだけど、今ひょっとして僕らは、ふかえりの話をしているんですか？」
"Hey, Komatsu-san, I don't quite understand, but are we by any chance talking about Fukieri now?"
「そうだよ。様々はふかえりと「空気さなぎ」の話をしている。それ以外に話題にのぼった条件はないはずだ」
"Yes, we are talking about various things regarding Fukieri and 'Air Chrysalis'. There shouldn't be any other topic under discussion."
天五は唇を噛んで、その裏にあるはずの筋を読み取ろうとした。「でも、この作品は新人賞を取るのも無理だって、ずっとそういう話だったじゃないですか？このままじゃんともならないって」
Tengo bit his lip, trying to discern the underlying story. "But you said that this work wouldn't even win a newcomer's award? That it was hopeless as it is?"
「そうだよ、このままじゃなんともならない。そいつは明白い事実だ」
"Yes, it's hopeless as it is. That's an obvious fact."
天五には考える時間が必要だった。「ということはつまり、応募してきた作品に手を入れるってことですか？」
Tengo needed time to think. "So, does that mean we'll have to make changes to the submitted work?"
「それ以外に方法はないさ。有望な応募作に編集者がアドバイスして書き直させる例はよくある。珍しいことじゃない。ただし今回は著者自身ではなく、他の誰かが書く直すことになる」
"There's no other way. It's common for editors to advise promising submissions and have them rewritten. It's not unusual. However, this time, it will not be the author himself, but someone else who will rewrite it."
「他の誰か」そういったものの、その答えは質問を口にする前から天五にはわかっていた。ただの念ために尋ねただけだ。
"Someone else," he said, but Tengo had known the answer even before asking the question. He had asked just to be sure.
「君が書くき直すんだよ」と小松は言った。
"You're going to rewrite it," Komatsu said.
天五は適当な言葉を探した。しかし適当な言葉は見当たらなかった。彼はため息をつき、言った。「てもね、小松さん、この作品は多少手値視するくらいじゃ間に会いません。頭から尻尾まで根本的に描き直さないことにはまとまりがつかないでしょう」
Tengo searched for the right words. But he couldn't find them. He sighed and said, "But, Komatsu-san, this work won't be fixed by just a little editing. It won't come together unless it's fundamentally rewritten from beginning to end."
