天五はコーヒーカップをてに取り、その中にあるものを一口飲んだ。何の味もしない。ただなま湯かい液体が喉を取りすぎていくだけだ。
「新しい水をもらおうか？」と小松が尋ねた。
天五は首を振った。「いえ、大丈夫です。もう落ち着きました」
小松は上着のポケットからマルボロの箱を取り出し、口に煙草をくわえ、店のマッチで火をつけた。それから腕時計にちらりと目をやった。
「それで、何の話をしていたんでしたっけ？」と天五は尋ねた。早く平常に戻らなくてはならない。
「ええと。俺たち何を話してたんだっけな」と小松は言って目を宙に向け、少し考えた。あるいは考えるふりをした。どちらかは天五にもわからない。小松の動作やしゃべり方には少なからず演技的な部分がある。「うん、そうだ。ふかえりって女の子の話をしかけてたんだ。それと「空気さなぎ」について」
天五は肯いた。ふかえりと「空気さなぎ」の話だ。それについて小松に説明しかけたところで「発作」がやってきって、はんしが中断した。天五は鞄の中から原稿のコピーの東を取り出し、テープルの上に置いた.
原稿の上に手を載せ、その感触を今一度たしかめた。
「電話でも簡単に話ましたけど、この「空気さなぎ」の一番の実点は誰の真似もしていない、というところです。新人の作品にしては珍しく、何かみたいになりたいという部分がありません」、天五は慎重に言葉を選んで言った「確かに文章は荒削りだし、言葉の選び方も稚拙です。大体題名からして、蛹とまゆを混同しています。その気になれば、欠陥は他にもいくらでも並べ立てられるでしょう。

Tengo picked up the coffee cup and took a sip of its contents.
何の味もしない。
It had no taste.
ただなま湯かい液体が喉を取りすぎていくだけだ。
It was just a lukewarm liquid flowing down his throat.
「新しい水をもらおうか？」と小松が尋ねた。
"Shall we get some fresh water?" Komatsu asked.
天五は首を振った。「いえ、大丈夫です。もう落ち着きました」
Tengo shook his head. "No, it's fine. I've calmed down now."

Komatsu took out a box of Marlboros from his coat pocket, put a cigarette in his mouth, and lit it with a match from the store.
それから腕時計にちらりと目をやった。
Then he glanced at his wristwatch.
「それで、何の話をしていたんでしたっけ？」と天五は尋ねた。早く平常に戻らなくてはならない。
"So, what were we talking about?" Tengo asked. He needed to get back to normal quickly.
「ええと。俺たち何を話してたんだっけな」と小松は言って目を宙に向け、少し考えた。
"Uh, what were we talking about?" Komatsu said, looking up into the air, thinking for a moment.
あるいは考えるふりをした。
Or pretended to think.
どちらかは天五にもわからない。
Tengo couldn't tell which it was.
小松の動作やしゃべり方には少なからず演技的な部分がある。
There was a somewhat theatrical aspect to Komatsu's actions and way of speaking.
「うん、そうだ。ふかえりって女の子の話をしかけてたんだ。それと「空気さなぎ」について」
"Yeah, that's right. We were talking about a girl named Fukaeri. And about 'Air Chrysalis.'"
天五は肯いた。ふかえりと「空気さなぎ」の話だ。それについて小松に説明しかけたところで「発作」がやってきって、はんしが中断した。
Tengo nodded. It was about Fukaeri and "Air Chrysalis." He had just started to explain this to Komatsu when a 'seizure' occurred, and the conversation was interrupted.
天五は鞄の中から原稿のコピーの東を取り出し、テープルの上に置いた.
Tengo took a copy of the manuscript out of his bag and placed it on the table.

He placed his hand on the manuscript, feeling its texture once more.
「電話でも簡単に話ましたけど、この「空気さなぎ」の一番の実点は誰の真似もしていない、というところです。
"I mentioned it briefly on the phone, but the most remarkable thing about this 'Air Chrysalis' is that it doesn't imitate anyone."
新人の作品にしては珍しく、何かみたいになりたいという部分がありません」、天五は慎重に言葉を選んで言った
"It's unusual for a newcomer's work, as it doesn't have any part that seems to want to be like something else," Tengo said, choosing his words carefully.
「確かに文章は荒削りだし、言葉の選び方も稚拙です。大体題名からして、蛹とまゆを混同しています。その気になれば、欠陥は他にもいくらでも並べ立てられるでしょう。
"Certainly, the writing is rough, and the choice of words is immature. Generally, starting from the title, it confuses chrysalis with cocoon. If one is so inclined, numerous other flaws could also be listed."
