おおかたの人は青豆の顔立ちをうまく把握できなかった。一旦目を離すともう、彼女がどんな顔をしていたのか描写することができない。どちらかといえば個性的な声であるはずなのに、細部の特徴がどうしてか頭に残らない。そういう意味では彼女は、巧妙に擬態する昆虫に似ていた。色や方らを変えて背景の中に潜り込んでしまうこと、できるだけ目立たないこと、簡単に記憶されないこと、それこそが間さに青豆の求めいることだった。小さな子供の頃から彼女はそのようにして自分の身を護ってきたのだ。
ところが何かがあって顔を顰めると、青豆のそんなクールな顔立ちは、劇的なまでに一変した。顔の筋肉が思い思いの方向い力強くひきつり、造作の左右のいびつさが極端なまでに強調され、あちこちに深いしわが寄り、目が素早く奥にひっこみ、鼻と口が暴力的に歪み、顎がよじれ、唇がまくれ上がって白い大きな歯が剥き出したなった。そしてまるで止めていた紐が切れて仮面がはがれ落ちたみたいに、彼女はあっという間に全くの別人になった。それを目にした相手は、そのすさまじい変容ぶりに肝を潰した。それは大きなる無名性から息を呑む深淵への、驚くべき跳躍だった。だから彼女は知らない人の前では、決して顔をしか目ないように心がけていた。彼女が顔を歪めるのは、自分一人のときか、あるいはきに入らない男をおどず時に限られていた。
緊急用駐車スペースに着くと、青豆はたち止まってあたりを見まわし、非常階段を探した。それはすぐに見つかった。運転手は言ったように、階段の入り口には腰より少し上くらいの高さの鉄柵があり、扉には鍵がかかっていた。タイトなミニスカートを履いてその鉄柵を乗り越えるのはいささか面倒だが、人目さえ木にし投げれば特に難しいことでもない。彼女は迷わずハイビールを脱ぎ、ショルダーバッグの中に突っ込んだ。

* 「だから彼女は知らない人の前では、決して顔をしかめないように心がけていた。」 "That's why she made sure never to frown in front of strangers."
* 「彼女が顔を歪めるのは、自分一人のときか、あるいは気に入らない男を脅す時に限られていた。」 "She only distorted her face when she was alone or when she needed to intimidate a man she didn't like."
* 「緊急用駐車スペースに着くと、青豆はたち止まってあたりを見まわし、非常階段を探した。」 "Upon reaching the emergency parking space, Aomame stopped to look around and search for the emergency stairs."
* 「それはすぐに見つかった。運転手は言ったように、階段の入り口には腰より少し上くらいの高さの鉄柵があり、扉には鍵がかかっていた。」 "She found them immediately. As the driver had said, there was an iron fence about higher than waist-level at the entrance to the stairs, and the door was locked."
* 「タイトなミニスカートを履いてその鉄柵を乗り越えるのはいささか面倒だが、人目さえ気にしなければ特に難しいことでもない。」 "It was a bit troublesome to climb over the fence in a tight miniskirt, but it wasn't particularly difficult if one didn't mind being seen."
