世界はゆるい粥のようにどろどろとして骨格を持たず、捉えどころがない。それは脳内に記憶を形成することなく、窓の外を過ぎ去っていく。
父親でない男が母親の乳首をを吸っているという状況の意味あいが、もちろん一歳半の幼児に判断できるはずはない。それは明らかだ。だからもし天五のその記憶が真正なものであるとすれば、おそらく彼は何も判断せず、めにした情景をあるがまま網膜に焼き付けたのだろう。カメラの物体をただの光と影の混合物として、機械的にフィルムに記録するのと同じように。そして意識が成長するにつれて、その保留され固定された映像が少しずつ解析され、そこに意味性が付与されていったのだろう。でもそんなことが果たして現実に起こり得るのだろうか？乳幼児の脳にそんな映像を保存しておくことが可能なのだろうか？
あるいはそれはただのファイルの記憶なのだろうか？すべては彼の意識が後日、なんらかの目的なり企みを持って、勝手に拵え上げたものなのだろうか？記憶の捏造ーその可能性についても天五は十分に考慮した。そしておそらくそうではあるまいという結論に達した。拵えものであるにしては記憶はあまりにも鮮明であり、深い説得力を持っている。そこにある光や、匂いや、鼓動。それらの実在感は圧倒的で、まがいものとは思えない。そしてまた、その情景が実際に存在したと仮定する方が、いろんなものごとの説明がうまくついた。論理的にも、そして感情的にも。
時間にして１０秒ほどのその鮮明な映像は、前触れもなしにやってくる。予兆もなければ、猶予もない。ノックの音もない。電車に乗っているとき、黒板に数式を描いてるとき、食事をして（３２）いろとき、誰かと向かい合って話をしている時（例えば今回のように）、それは唐突に天五を訪れる。

The world is like loose porridge, thick and skeletal, elusive. It goes out the window without forming a memory in your brain.

Of course, there is no way for a one-and-a-half-year-old child to be able to judge the significance of a situation where a man who is not his father is sucking his mother's nipples. That for sure is clear.
だからもし天五のその記憶が真正なものであるとすれば、おそらく彼は何も判断せず、めにした情景をあるがまま網膜に焼き付けたのだろう。カメラの物体をただの光と影の混合物として、機械的にフィルムに記録するのと同じように。
So, if Tengo's memories are genuine, he probably didn't have any judgments at the time and the scene was simply burned into his retinas. In the same way that a camera mechanically records an object on film as just a mixture of light and shadow.
そして意識が成長するにつれて、その保留され固定された映像が少しずつ解析され、そこに意味性が付与されていったのだろう。でもそんなことが果たして現実に起こり得るのだろうか？乳幼児の脳にそんな映像を保存しておくことが可能なのだろうか？
As his consciousness grew, the suspended and fixed images were analyzed little by little, and meaning was given to them. But could such a thing actually happen? Is it possible for infants to store such images in their brains?

Or could it just be a fabricated memory? Could it all be something he concocted later on, for some purpose or scheme? Tengo gave due consideration to the possibility of that he was fabricating memories.

And he reached the conclusion that this was not the case. For a fabrication, the memory is too vivid, too persuasive. The light, the smell, the heartbeat present in it. The sense of their reality is overwhelming, making them hard to dismiss as fakes. Moreover, the assumption that this scene actually existed provides a more fitting explanation for many things, both logically and emotionally.

This vivid memory, lasting about 10 seconds, comes without any warning. There's no premonition, no time to prepare, not even a knock. Whether he's on a train, writing equations on a blackboard, eating, or talking face-to-face with someone (like now, for instance), it suddenly visits Tengo.
