青豆は顎を引いてまっすぐ前方を見据え、、背筋を伸ばし、人々の視線を肌に感じながら、誰かな足取りで歩いていった。シャルル・ジョルダンの栗色のヒールが路上に乾いた音を立て、風がコートの裾を揺ららせた。既に４月に入っていたが、風はまだ冷たく、荒々しの予感を含んでいた。彼女はジュンコ・シマダのグリーンの薄いウールのスーツの上に、ベージュのスプリング・コートを着て、黒い革のショルダーバックをかけていた。肩までの髪はきれいにカットされ、よく手入れている。 装身具に類するものは一切つけていない。身長は一六八サンチ、贅肉はほとんど人かけらもなく、全ての筋肉は蓮入りに鍛え上げられているが、それはコートの上からはわからない。
正面から仔細に顔を観察すれば、左右で耳の方らと大きさが空に異なっていることがわかるはずだ。左の耳のお方が右の耳よりずっと大きくて、形が歪なのだ。しかしそんなことにはまず誰も気が付かない。耳は大体いつもかみのしたに隠されていたからだ。唇はまっすぐ一文字に閉じられ、何によらず簡単には馴染まない性格を示唆している。細い小さな鼻と、いくぶん突き出した骨と、広い頭と、長い直線的な眉も、その傾向にそれぞれ一票を投じている。しかしおむね整った卵形の顔立ちである。好みはあるにせよ、いちおう美人といってかまわないだろう。問題は、顔の表性が極端に乏しいところにあった。硬く閉じられた唇は、よほどの必要がなければ微笑めみひとつ浮かべなかった。その両目は優勝な甲板監視員のように、怠りな冷やや蚊だった。おかげで、彼女の顔が人々に鮮やかな印象を与えることはまずなかった。多くの場合人々の注意や関心を惹きつけるのは、静止した顔立ちの善し悪しよりは、むしろ表情の動きほうの自然さや優雅さなのだ。
