天吾は口を軽く開けたまま、しばらく小松の顔を見ていた。小松はコーヒースプーンをソーサーに戻した。不自然に大きな音がした。
「もし芥川賞を取れたとして、それからどうなるんですか？」と天吾は気を取り直して尋ねた。「芥川賞を取れば評判になる。世の中の大半の人間は、小説の値打ちなんて方んどわからん。しかし世の中の流れからとり残されたくないと持っている。だから賞を取って話題になった本があれば、買って読む。著者が現役の女子高校生ともなればなおさらだ。本が売れれば結構な金になる。儲けは３人で適当に分けよう。そのへんは俺がうまく按配する」
「金の分配みたいなことは、今のところどうでもいいです」と天吾は潤いを欠いた声で言った。「でもそんなことして、編集者としての職業倫理に抵触しないんですか。もしそんな仕掛けをしたおことが世間にばれちゃったら、ずいぶんな問題になりますよ。会社にもいられないでしょう」
「そんなに簡単にバレやしないよ。俺はそのきになればとても用心深くことを運ぶことができるそれにもしバレたことろで、会社なんて喜んでやめてやる。どうせ上の方には受けが悪くて、ずっと冷や飯を食わされてきたんだ。仕事くらいすぐに見つけられる。俺はね、何も金がほしくてこんなことをやろうとしてるんじゃない。俺が望んでいるのは、文壇をコケにすることだよ。うす暗い穴ぐらにうじゃうじゃ集まって、お世辞を言い合ったり、場口を舐めあったり、お互いの（５１）足を引き振り合ったりしながら、その一方で文字の使命がどうこうなんて違そうなことをほざいているしょうもない運中を、思い切り笑い飛ばしてやりたい。システムの裏を書いて、とことんおちゃくってやるんだ。愉快だと思わないか？」

* "If you were to win the Akutagawa Prize, what happens then?" Tengo asked, regaining his composure.

* "Winning the Akutagawa Prize makes you famous. Most people don't really understand the value of novels. But they don't want to be left out of the mainstream. So, if there's a book that's become a topic of conversation because it won a prize, they'll buy and read it. Especially if the author is a current female high school student. If the book sells well, it can bring in a decent amount of money. We'll split the profits three ways. I'll handle that part well."

* "I'm not concerned about the distribution of money for now," said Tengo in a dry voice. "But doesn't doing such a thing conflict with professional ethics as an editor? If such a scheme were to be exposed, it would cause quite a problem. You wouldn't be able to stay at the company, would you?"

* "It's not that easy to get caught. I can be very cautious when I need to be. And even if I do get caught, I'd gladly leave the company. I've always been unpopular with the higher-ups and have been been in a difficult situation for a for a long time. I can find a job easily. It's not that I want money for doing this. What I want is to make a mockery of the literary world. I want to laugh at the worthless people who gather in dark holes, exchanging flatteries, licking each other's wounds, pulling each other's legs, while talking nonsense about the mission of literature. I want to write about the underside of the system and mock it thoroughly. Don't you think it's amusing?"
