天吾は小松の言ったことについて考えた。そして言葉を慎重に選んだ。「問題がふたつあります。もっとたくさん問題があるはずだけど、とりあえず二つだけにしておきます。ひとつは著者である不帰という女の子が、他人の手によう書き直しを了承するかどうかです。彼女がノート言えば、話はもちろん一歩も前に進まない。もうひとつ、彼女がそれを了承したとして、僕があの物語を実際にうまく書き直せるかどうかという問題があります。共同作業というのはすごく微妙なものだし、小松さんが考えているように簡単にはものごとは運ばないんじゃないですか」
「天吾くんにならできる」、小松はその意見を前もって予期していたように、間を置かずに言った。「問違いなくできる、最初に「空気さなぎ」を読んだときに、それがまず俺の頭にぽっと浮かんだことだった。こいうつは天吾くんが書き直すべき話んだって。更に言えば、これは天吾くんが書き直すに相応しい話なんだ。天吾くんに描き直されることを持っている話なんだ。そうは思わないか？』
天吾はただ首を振った。言葉が出てこない。
「何も急ぐことはない」と小松は静かな声で言った。「大事なことだ。二、三目十九り考えばいい。「空気さなぎ」をもう一度読み返してくれ、そして俺が提案したことについてよく考えてみてほしい。そうだ。こいつも君に渡しておこう」
小松は上着のポケットから茶色の封筒を出し、それを天吾に渡した。封筒の中には提携のカラー写真が２度入っていた。女の子の写真だった。一度は胸から上のポートレイト、もう一度は全身が（５３）映ったスナップ写真。

Then he chose his words carefully. "There are two problems. There should be many more, but for now, let's just stick to these two.
ひとつは著者である不帰という女の子が、他人の手によう書き直しを了承するかどうかです。
One is whether Fukaeri, the author, will agree to have her work rewritten by someone else.
彼女がノート言えば、話はもちろん一歩も前に進まない。
If she says no, of course, the discussion doesn't move forward at all.
もうひとつ、彼女がそれを了承したとして、僕があの物語を実際にうまく書き直せるかどうかという問題があります。
The other issue is, even if she agrees, whether I can successfully rewrite that story or not.

Collaboration is a very delicate matter, and things might not go as smoothly as Mr. Komatsu thinks.
「天吾くんにならできる」、小松はその意見を前もって予期していたように、間を置かずに言った。
"You can do it, Tengo," Komatsu said immediately, as if he had anticipated this opinion.
「問違いなくできる、最初に「空気さなぎ」を読んだときに、それがまず俺の頭にぽっと浮かんだことだった。
"No doubt about it, when I first read 'Air Chrysalis,' it immediately came to my mind.
天吾はただ首を振った。言葉が出てこない。
Tengo just shook his head. No words came out.
「何も急ぐことはない」と小松は静かな声で言った。「大事なことだ。二、三目十九り考えばいい。
"There's no need to rush," Komatsu said in a calm voice. "It's important. Take two or three days to think about it.
小松は上着のポケットから茶色の封筒を出し、それを天吾に渡した。
Komatsu took a brown envelope out of his coat pocket and handed it to Tengo.
