同じ時に振られたものらしい。彼女はどこかの階段の前に立っている。広い石の階段だ。古典的な美しい顔立ち、長いまっすぐな髪。白いブラウス。小柄で、やせている。唇は笑おうと努力しているが、目はそれに抵抗している。生真面目な目だ。何かを求める目だ。天吾はその二枚の写真をしばらく交互に眺めた。なぜかはわからないが、その写真を見ているうちに、その年代の頃の自分のことを思い出した。そして胸がわずかに通んだ。それは長いあいだ味わったことのない特別な種類の痛みだった。彼女の姿にはそういう痛みを喚起するものがあるようだった。
小松が言った。「それがふかえりだ。なかなかの美人だおる。それも清楚なタイプだ。十七歳。申しぶんない。本名は深田絵理子。しかし本名は出さない。あくまで「ふかえり」で通す。芥川賞でもっとたら、ちょっとした話題になる思和ないか。マスコミは夕暮れどきのコウモリの群れみたに頭上を呼び回るだろう。本は作る端から売れる」
小松はどこでその写真を手に入れたのだろう。天吾は不思議に思った。応募原稿に写真が添えられてくるわけはない。しかし天吾はそれについては質問しないことにした。回答をーどんな回答か予測もつかないが、知りたくなかったということもある。
「そいつは君が持っていればいい。何かの彼に立つだろう」と小松は言った。天吾は写真を封筒に戻し、「空気さなき」の原稿コビーの上に置いた。
「小松さん、僕は業界の事情みたいなものはほとんど何も知りません。でも一般常識に照らし合わせて考えればこれはすごく危なっかしい計画です。いったん世間に向けて嘘をついたら、永遠に嘘をつき通さなくちゃなりません。つじつまを合わせ続けなくちゃならない。心理的にも（５４）技術的にも、それは簡単なことじゃないはずです。誰かがどこかでひとつでもしくじれば、全員の命取りになりかねない。そう思いませんか？」

Her lips are trying to smile, but the eyes seem to be resisting it.

Serious eyes.
何かを求める目だ。
Eyes that are seeking something.
天吾はその二枚の写真をしばらく交互に眺めた。
Tengo looked back and forth at the two photos for a while.
なぜかはわからないが、その写真を見ているうちに、その年代の頃の自分のことを思い出した。
For some reason, while looking at those photos, he remembered himself from that era.
そして胸がわずかに通んだ。
And then his heart felt a slight pain.
それは長いあいだ味わったことのない特別な種類の痛みだった。
It was a special kind of pain he had not felt for a long time.
彼女の姿にはそういう痛みを喚起するものがあるようだった。
There seemed to be something about her figure that evoked such pain.

Komatsu said, "That's Fukaeri. Quite a beauty. And she's the pure type. Seventeen years old. Unbelievable. Her real name is Eriko Fukada. But she doesn't use her real name. She goes strictly by 'Fukaeri'. If she wins the Akutagawa Prize, it might cause a bit of a stir. The media would swarm over her like a flock of bats at dusk. The book would sell as soon as it's published."
小松はどこでその写真を手に入れたのだろう。
I wonder where Komatsu got those photos.
天吾は不思議に思った。
Tengo thought it strange.
応募原稿に写真が添えられてくるわけはない。
There's no way photos would come attached to a manuscript submission.
しかし天吾はそれについては質問しないことにした。
However, Tengo decided not to ask about it.
回答をーどんな回答か予測もつかないが、知りたくなかったということもある。
He didn't want to know the answer – whatever it might be.
「そいつは君が持っていればいい。何かの彼に立つだろう」と小松は言った。
"You should keep it. It might come in handy," Komatsu said.
天吾は写真を封筒に戻し、「空気さなき」の原稿コビーの上に置いた。
Tengo put the photos back into the envelope and placed it on top of the manuscript copy of "Air Chrysalis."

"Komatsu, I know almost nothing about the industry. But using common sense, this seems like a very risky plan. Once we lie to the public, we have to keep lying forever. We have to keep the story straight. It's not easy, either psychologically or technically. If someone makes even one mistake somewhere, it could be disastrous for everyone. Don't you think so?"
