小松は新し煙草を取り出して火をつけた。「そのとおりだ」。君の言い分は健全で正しい。たしかにリスキーな計画だ。今の時点ではいささか不確定要素が多すぎる。何が起こるか予測がっかない。失敗して、それぞれに面白くない思いをすることになるかもしれない。そいつはよくわかっている。しかしな、天吾くん、全てを考慮した上で、俺の本能は「前に進め」と告げている。なぜならこんなチャンスはまずお目にかかることのできないものだからだ、これまでだって一度もなかった。この先だってた分ないだろう。賭け後にたとえるのは不適当かもしれんが、札も揃っている。チップもたっぷりある。いろんな条件がぴったりと合っている。この機会を逃したら、あとあと後悔することになる」
天吾は黙って、相手の顔に予感大かにも不吉な微笑みを眺めていた。
「そしてなによりも大事なのは、俺たちが「空気さなぎ」を、より優れた作品につくり直そうとしているという点にある。あれはもっと上手く書かれていいはずの話なんだ。あそこには何かとても大事なものがある。誰かがうまく取り出してやらなくちゃならん何かだ。天吾くんだって内心ではそう思ってりうはずだ。違うか？そのために我々は力を合わせる。プロジェクトを立ち上げ、それぞれの能力を持ち寄る。動機としてはどこに出しても恥ずかしくないものだよ」
「しかし小松さん、どんな理屈を持ち出そうと、大義名分を掲げようと、これはどう見ても詐欺行為ですよ。動機はどこに出しても恥ずかしくないものかもしれないけれど、実際にはどこに出すこともできない。裏でこそこそ動き回らなくちゃなりません。詐欺という言葉が不適当なら、（５５）背信行為です。

Because such an opportunity is almost impossible to come by; it's never happened before and probably won't in the future.

It may be inappropriate to compare it to gambling, but the cards are in place. There are plenty of chips. Various conditions are perfectly aligned.

Tengo silently gazed at the other person's face, which bore a smile that was foreboding yet ominous.

"And most importantly, we are trying to remake 'Air Chrysalis' into a superior work. That story deserves to be written better. There is something very important there. Something that someone needs to skillfully extract. You surely must feel the same way deep down, don't you? Isn't it so? For that reason, we must join forces. Launch a project, and bring together our abilities. Our motivation is something to be proud of, no matter where it's presented."

"But Komatsu, no matter the rationale or the just cause we claim, this is unmistakably fraudulent. The motive might be something not to be ashamed of, but in reality, it cannot be disclosed anywhere. We must move stealthily in the background. If 'fraud' is not the right word, then it's an act of betrayal."
