青豆はまた立ち止まり、また首を振る。深いため息をつき、握った階段のパイプをもう一度しっかり握り直す。こんなことを考えるのはやめなくてはいけない。階段を降りることに意識を集中しなくては。もう半分以上は降りたはずだ、と青豆は思う。それにしてもどうしてこんなに騒音が酷いのだろう。どうしてこんなに風が強いのだろう。それらは私を咎め、罰しているみたいにも感じられる。
それはともかく、この階段を地上まで降りたとき、もしそこに誰かがいて、声をかけられ事情をきかれたり、素性を尋ねられたりしたら、いったい何と答えらばいいのだろう。「高速道路が渋滞していたので、非常階段を使って振りてきたんです。急ぎの用事があったものですから」と言って、それで済むものだろうか？ひょっとしたら面倒なことになるかも知れない。青豆はいかなる種類の面倒にも巻き込まれたくなかった。少なくとも今日は。
ありがたいことに地上には、降りてくる彼女を見とがめるものはいなかった。地上に降りると青豆はまずバッグから靴を出して履いた。階段の下は二四六号線の上り線と下り線には様れた高架下の空き地で、資材置き場になっていた。周りを金属の板塀で取り囲まれ、むき出しの地面に鉄柱が何本か転がっている。何かの工事の後に余ったものなのだろう、錆びるままにうち捨てられいた。プラスチくの屋根が設置された一角があり、その下に布袋が三つ積み上げられていた。何が入っているのかはわからないが、雨に濡れないようにビニールのカバーがかけられている。それも何かの工事の最後に余ったものらしい。いちいち運び出すのが面倒なので、そ（６２）のまま放ってあるようだ。屋根の下には、潰れた大きな段ポール箱もいくつかあった。数本のペットポトルと、漫画雑誌が何冊か地面に捨てられている。そのほかには何もない。ビニールの買い物袋があてもなく風に舞っているだけだ。

She sighed deeply and gripped the railing of the stairs she was holding more firmly.

I must stop thinking about such things.
4. 階段を降りることに意識を集中しなくては。
I must concentrate on going down the stairs.
5. もう半分以上は降りたはずだ、と青豆は思う。
I must have already descended more than half, Aomame thought.
6. それにしてもどうしてこんなに騒音が酷いのだろう。
Still, why is the noise so awful?
7. どうしてこんなに風が強いのだろう。
Why is the wind so strong?
8. それらは私を咎め、罰しているみたいにも感じられる。
It feels like they are blaming and punishing me.
9. それはともかく、この階段を地上まで降りたとき、もしそこに誰かがいて、声をかけられ事情をきかれたり、素性を尋ねられたりしたら、いったい何と答えらばいいのだろう。
Anyway, when I get down these stairs to the ground, if someone is there and asks me questions or inquires about my background, what should I answer?
10. 「高速道路が渋滞していたので、非常階段を使って振りてきたんです。急ぎの用事があったものですから」と言って、それで済むものだろうか？
"I used the emergency stairs because the highway was congested. I had urgent business," would that suffice?

Aomame did not want to get involved in any kind of trouble, at least not today.

Fortunately, there was no one on the ground to blame her as she descended.

Once she reached the ground, Aomame first took out shoes from her bag and put them on.

Under the stairs was a vacant lot under the elevated structure, separating the up and down lanes of Route 246, which had become a storage area for materials.
16. 周りを金属の板塀で取り囲まれ、むき出しの地面に鉄柱が何本か転がっている。
Surrounded by metal panel fences, several steel columns lay scattered on the bare ground.
17. 何かの工事の後に余ったものなのだろう、錆びるままにうち捨てられいた。
They must have been left over from some construction work, abandoned to rust.
18. プラスチくの屋根が設置された一角があり、その下に布袋が三つ積み上げられていた。
There was a corner with a plastic roof, and under it, three bags were stacked.
19. 何が入っているのかはわからないが、雨に濡れないようにビニールのカバーがかkられている。
I don't know what's inside, but they are covered in plastic to protect them from the rain.
20. それも何かの工事の最後に余ったものらしい。
That too seems to be something left over from some construction.
21. いちいち運び出すのが面倒なので、そ（６２）のまま放ってあるようだ。
It seems they have been left there because it's too much trouble to move each one out.
22. 屋根の下には、潰れた大きな段ポール箱もいくつかあった。
Under the roof, there were also several large, crushed cardboard boxes.
23. 数本のペットポトルと、漫画雑誌が何冊か地面に捨てられている。
A few PET bottles and several comic magazines were discarded on the ground.

There was nothing else.
25. ビニールの買い物袋があてもなく風に舞っているだけだ。
Only a plastic shopping bag was aimlessly dancing in the wind.
