デートに出かけるわけではない。鏡に向かってうっすらと口紅をひいた。眉も整えてた。スーツの上着を脱ぎで、ブラシャーのワイヤの位置を調整し、白いブラウスのしわを伸ばし、脇の下の汗の匂いを嗅いだ。匂いはない。そのあとで目を閉じて、いつものようにお祈りの文句を唱えた。その文句自体には何の意味もない。意味なんでどうでもいい。お祈りを唱えるということが大事なのだ。
お祈りが終わると、目を開けて鏡の中の自分の姿を見た。大丈夫。どこから見ても隙のない、いかにも湯能そうなビジネス・ウ・ウーママンだ。背筋はまっすぐ伸び、口元も引き締まっている。大きなずんぐりとしたショルダーバッグだけがいさか場違いだ。多分薄手のアタシェケースでも持つべきなのだろう。しかしその文化えった実務的に見える。念には念を入れて、ショルダーバッグの中の品物をもう一度点検した。問題はない。全てあるべき場所に収まっている。なんでも手深りで取り出せるようになっている。
あとはただ決められたことを実行するだけだ。揺らぎのない信念と無慈悲さを持ち、まっすぐことにあたらなくてはならない。青豆はそれから、ブラウスの一番上のボタンをはずし、身をかがめたときに胸の谷間が見えやすいようにする。もう少し胸が大きいと効果的なのにな、と彼女は残念に思う。
誰に見とが目られることもなくエレベーターで４回に上がり、廊下を歩いてすぐに四二六号室のドアを見つける。ショルダーバッグの中から用意して置いた紙ばさみをとり出し、それを胸に抱え、部屋のドアをノークする。軽く関節にノークする。しばらく持つ。それからもう一度ノークする。（６７）

She’s not going out on a date. She applied a faint lipstick in front of the mirror. She also tidied her eyebrows. Taking off her suit jacket, She adjusted the wires of her bra, smoothed out the wrinkles on my white blouse, and smelled the sweat under her arms. There was no smell. After that, she closed my eyes and recited the usual prayer phrases. Those phrases themselves have no meaning. It doesn't matter what they mean. What's important is reciting the prayer.
