異世界に紛れ込んでしまったような域覚に襲われ、私は早足で地下鉄の駅を探して歩いた。やっと地下鉄の標識を見つけてほっと走り寄った先で、真っ白なオフィスビルの一階が透明の水槽のようになっているのを発見した。
「スマイルマート日色町駅前店OPEN!オープニングスタッフ募集！」というポスターが透明のガラスに貼られている他は、看板も何もなかった。ガラスの中をそっと覗くと、人も誰もおらず、工事の途中なのか、壁、のアラこちにはビニールが貼りつけられていて、何も載っていない白い棚だけが並んでいた。そのがらんどうの場所がコンビニエンスストアになるとは私には到底言じられなかった。
家からの仕送りは十分にあったが、アルバイトには興味があった。私はポスターの電話番号をメモして帰り、翌日に電話をかけた。簡単な面接が行きわれ、すぐに探用となった。
来週から研修だと言われ、皆底された時間に店へ向かうと、そこは前に見た時よりも少しコンビニらしくなっていた。雑貨の棚だけが出来上がっており、文房具屋ハンカチな度が整然と並んでいた。
店の中には、私と同じように採用されたアルバイト立ちが集まっていた。自分と同じ大学生くらいの女の子や、フリーター風の男の子に少し年上の主婦と思われる女性、年齢も服装もバラバラの１５人ほどのアルバイトが、ぎこちなく店内をうろついていた。
