白羽さんは黙って、しわくちゃの皮膚の顔をしたまま、私の手首を引っ張り、面接の会場へと連れて行こうとした。

「狂ってる。そんな生き物を、世界は許しませんよ。ムラの掟に反している！皆から迫害されて孤独な人生を送るだけだ。そんなことより、僕の為に働いたほうがずっといい。皆、そのほうがほっとするし、納得する。全ての人が喜ぶ生き方なんですよ」

「一緒には行けません。私はコンビニ定員という動物なんです。その本能を表切ることはできません」

「そんなことは許されないんだ！」

私は背筋を伸ばして「誓いの言葉」というときのように、白羽さんに真っ直ぐ向き会った。

「いえ、誰に許されなくても、私はコンビニ店員なんです。人間の私には、ひょっとしたら白羽さんがいた方が都合がよくて、家族や友人も安心して、納得するかも（１６０）しれない。でもコンビニ店員という動物である私にとっては、あなたまったく必要ないんです！」

I straightened my back and faced Shiraha directly, like when I made the 'oath'.

"No, even if it's not accepted by anyone, I'm a convenience store clerk. As a human, maybe having you around would be convenient for me, and my family and friends would be reassured and satisfied. But for me, who is an animal known as a convenience store clerk, you are completely unnecessary!"
