今日は火曜日の日だ。今日は火曜日、新商品の日だ。コンビニに店員にとって一週間で一番大切なことのひのとこを、どうして忘れていたのだろう。
私はチョコレートの新商品が、一番下の棚に一列しか並んでないのを見て、悲鳴をあげそうだった。半年前に大ヒットして売れ切れ続出で話題になったチョコレート菓子の期間限定のホワイトチョコ味がこんな場所に、地味に並べられているんなんて、あり得ないことだ。私は手早く売り場を直し、大して売れるものではにのに幅をとっている菓子を一列にして、新商品を一番上の段に三列にして並べ、他の菓子につけっぱなしになっていた、「新商品！」というPOPをつけた。
レジを打っている女のこが、怪訝な顔でこちらを見ている。私の動きに気が付いているが、行列ができているの動きが取れないようだ。私は胸のバッジを見せるような仕草をしながら、「おはようございます！」とお客様の邪魔にならない程度の声で呼びかけ、会釈をした。
ほっと安心したような表情になり、女の子は小さく会釈を返して、レジに集中し始めた。スーツ姿の私を、本社の社員だとでも思ったのだろう。こんなに簡単に騙されてしまうなんて、安全管理がなっていないと思う。私がもしも悪い人間で、バックルームの金庫を開けたりレジのお金を盗んだりしたらどうするつもりなのだろう。
Today is Tuesday, the day for new products. It's Tuesday, the day for new products at the convenience store! How could I forget the most important day of the week for a store employee?
When I saw that there was only one row of the new chocolate product on the bottom shelf, I felt like screaming. It was unimaginable that the limited-time White Chocolate flavor of the chocolate candies that had become a huge hit and sold out six months ago was placed so inconspicuously. I quickly rearranged the display, put the not-so-popular candies in a single row, and placed the new product on the top shelf in three rows. I also added a sign that said "New Product!" which had been left hanging.
The girl at the cash register was giving me a suspicious look. She noticed my actions but couldn't move since there was a line of customers. I made a gesture as if showing my badge on my chest and greeted with a voice that wouldn't disturb the customers too much, saying, "Good morning!" and nodding.
She seemed relieved and returned a slight nod, then focused on the register. She must have thought I was a corporate employee. It made me think that the security measures here weren't very effective if I could deceive her so easily. What if I were a dishonest person trying to open the backroom safe or steal money from the cash register?
