炊飯器はずっと保温に鳴っていて開けるとご飯があり、眼が覚めるそれを口の中のに押し込んで、また押入れに戻って眠るような生活だったのだ。
顔を合わせた流れで、なんとなく、一緒に食事をする運びとなった。白羽さんが冷凍したおかずは、シュウマイとチキンナゲットだった。皿に盛ったそれを無言で口に運ぶ。
自分が何のために栄養をとっているのかもわからなかった。咀嚼してドロドロになったご飯とシュウマイを私はいつまでも飲み込むことができなかった。
その日は、私の初めての面接だった。派遣とはいえ、36歳までアルバイトをしていた私が面接に漕ぎ着けることができたのは、奇跡のようなことだと白羽さんは得意に言った。コンビニを辞めてから、１ヶ月近く経っていた。
私は１０年上前にクリーニングに出したきりになっていたパンスーツを着て、髪のてを整えていた。
部屋の外に出ること自体、久しぶりだった。バイトをしながら僅かながらに貯めていたお金も、だいぶ減ってきていた。
「さあ古倉さん、行きますよ」

The rice cooker had been on "keep warm" mode for a while, and when I opened it, there was rice inside. I mechanically shoved it into my mouth after waking up, then returned to the closet to sleep.

As our faces coincidentally met, it became a sort of routine to eat together. Shiraha had frozen side dishes, which were shumai and chicken nuggets. I silently put them on a plate and brought them to my mouth.

I didn't even know why I was consuming nutrients. I couldn't bring myself to swallow the mushy rice and shumai for a long time.

That day was my first interview. Even though it was a temporary job, Shiraha-san proudly remarked that it was miraculous for someone like me, who had been working part-time until the age of 36, to secure an interview. It had been nearly a month since I quit the convenience store.

I wore a pantsuit that I hadn't worn since I sent it to the cleaners ten years ago and tidied up my hair.

Leaving the room itself was a rare occurrence. The little money I had managed to save while working part-time was dwindling.
「さあ古倉さん、行きますよ」
"Now, Furukura-san, let's go."
